Rewatching the series often makes you see new things you didn't notice before. Being aware of this discrimination makes you read things differently. Interesting thing to me... Mina did super well in the sports festival. Got to the third round, won a fight and wasn't embarrassed in her loss. And yet she got ZERO offers. It's interesting to wonder if discrimination played a hand there. I know tokoyami and tsu got offers, but only some similar heteromorphs (toki from hawks with a bird quirk, and tsu from the seal hero). It's interesting.
Honestly, I can imagine Shoji and Spinner seeing eye to eye on this matter under better circumstances. Ultimately they want the same thing here, but because of All for One using Spinner and making him unable to speak, and that Paranormal Liberation Army general who’s yelling, they’re now at odds with each other. Shoji and Spinner are both victims who, if I’m being honest, I just want to hug now.
There's a big difference between loving and playing the wonderful pastime of video games....and LoL. I miss spoke, but that was the reason for my comment.
I can't imagine the horror that Studio Bones had when the manga chapters for Spinner vs Shoji dropped after cutting the mutant stuff from MVA "We threw out his arc!"
"It's about beating, like defeating them, and then figuring out how to fix society so those villains aren't created in the first place." That is an almost perfect summary of this arc.
People were so excited to see Deku get revenge by beating up Shiggy that they totally forgot the true reason why were here. So switching to this, plus health breaks and short chapters, killed the weekly momentum for some readers. But I've reread this arc as a whole and knew that the anime would do it justice and I'm so glad that it has. 👏🏿
Wearing a mask to avoid scaring people is an unfortunate reality. Truth be told, I think both ways of rising up against oppression and prejudice have their merits. But I guess that’s the hardest choice for a lot of people. Truth be told, I feel really bad for Spinner. While he may not have wanted to be the face of this cause, he definitely cared on some level. But that care he had was physically warped into whatever he is now by All for One. On one hand, I would want to support a movement like this, because truth be told, a lot of people, whether intentionally or not, *have* hurt heteromorphs (mutants), and society *has* enabled that kind of behavior. But on the other hand, I can’t say that attacking a hospital is really a great way to prove the point that heteromorphs deserve equal treatment. It’s sad to say, but if All for One loses, then many of these people would be thrown in prison and seen as nothing more than criminals to the public. Obviously, I don’t blame them for acting the way they are though. It’s not fair that they have to make the choice to be strong against unwarranted discrimination that was thrown against them. Nothing about any of this is fair. But I guess that’s my main point. How should we choose to rise up against an oppressive world? Time is one of the main things that will tell.
The "they look creepy" sentiment is so incredible to me because it is so commonplace for people watching this show to think those very same thoughts when they see someone like Shoji and Centipeder. Horikoshi clearly knows he drew these characters to look "creepy" to his audience, and then uses that same very human tendency to connect his superhuman society to ours in a realistic and uncomfortable way. Of course people would treat heteromorphs badly. We understand it implicitly because so many of us had the impulse to dislike their appearances as well. He forces us to acknowledge that tendency and therefore validates it, but also shows us through his writing exactly where those impulses can lead if we act on them. It's an incredibly bold thing for a writer to do, and he pulled it off beautifully.
This episode went in an ENTIRELY different direction than last and I’m just remembering MVA’s cuts of Spinner’s role in watching after Shigaraki and stoking the fires of their ambition, while there’s literally a KKK in a forest manor. We never thought we would see the scene until these manga chapters came out and what would happen but the scene was inserted in the 1st War in Season 6 when it became clear the racism subject was going to take front and center at some point. It’s like the studios tried to skip it until Horikoshi forced their hand. And if this is how Horikoshi decided to force their hand good on him. If you’ve ever watched ANY news over the years you’ve likely seen these kinds of riots. Now they aren’t as crazy as actively attacking an actual hospital to jailbreak a villain entirely for the service of AFO’s goal. But the reasoning of the riots are the same. You look different, you’re pushed away, and then you want to push back. It’s a cycle. And in this fictional world of someone can look like ANYTHING, BE anything, well there you have your big visual driver. I hate this because there’s NO winners. Not in fiction not in real life. It’s just horrific to watch. It’s just endless amounts of angry people. Justifiably or not, it’s just SO much damage. Ok. And I do love how all this just made an absolute hero out of Shoji. He’s been one of my favorite students just by virtue of his endless imagination for using his body in so many ways. And seeing him FINALLY get the spotlight I’ve wanted for him for SO long brought a giant smile to my face. He’s a juggernaut in EVERYTHING he does and now seeing him just swirl around his arms to make more compacted arms for turbo punches and seeing him stretch all around under the biggest pressure of his life AND get to be the big driving force to get the people to question why they’re even there. Saving a girl AND getting torn up FOR doing so but still actually getting ANY comfort for himself and others. There’s nothing more I can ask for. And Koda being there as more than anything being there to stop bullying. Upgrading his quirk from talking to animals to now controlling/coordinating them is great! His mom is AMAZING taking her son and trying to just teach him to stand up to bullies as I’m going to assume her husband did for her. I WANT to be more positive of his quirk upgrade itself but in the world they live in this quirk is still pretty unwieldy with its competition. But seeing ANYONE preach hate getting swarmed by birds and taken off their perch in the process is 1000% worth it. Spinner is NOT managing his new quirks HALF as well as Lady Nagant did with air walk and self destruct quirk. And it’s a great tie in to how important AFO and the Doctor are as a team to make their soldiers. The Doctor can moderate the body to handle many other quirks but it takes MONTHS to get the new quirks in the body. Meanwhile AFO can instantly insert a quirk but the mind may just straight up break in the process of doing so. And Spinner is DEFINITELY the latter with his new scale armor and super sized body. And there’s still just endless references to TMNT here. Of course there’s another massive downside even if his brain was fully intact from AFO doing this. And that is he’s meant to be a worshipped figure and a call to follow him…and he himself says he has no real goal. He’s just a follower. And uhhhh that’s…a pretty hard goal to follow even with his matching pain to the mob below him. And I love every moment he confuses the mob with his messaging and the MLA leader from I THINK he was the Brown regiment under Spinner and Compress. The heroes not students really take a backseat here but I’m just always happy to see them be proud of the kids from the bottom of their hearts. And next time it just keeps on rolling over here.
@@Kaempfdog its still insane to me that koda can use birds to catch people. Like they literally move and fly present mic out of danger catch Shoji mid air. The average raven at most can lift 2.5 lbs. There weren't nearly enough of them to lift the average human, let alone shoji. So its either birds and animals are just naturally stronger and smarter (which there is evidence of in team up missions) or Koda is literally willing them to with his quirk. With a psychic link to animals, he could basically have enhanced senses and now with the bird feat, the ability to fly.
I think the anime established heteromorph racism earlier then the manga due to Heroes rising having Chimera and him kind of talking with Shoji and going “Lol, you look ugly bet everyone bullied you for it”. Not to mention Chimera’s whole thing basically having others treat him like a monster. The manga only mentions it by MVA.
Shigaraki isn't just any gamer; in the manga, he explicitly tells Spinner he used to play League of Legends. They changed it in this episode to LooL to avoid copyright issues down the road.
Fun fact, the doctors in the hospital there actually did a breach in protocol when they defended the place. To my knowledge, a lot of hospitals actually encourage their employees to save themselves in cases of emergency like this, but here, they’re putting the patients first. It’s cool to see honestly. It’s easy to forget that Shoji was actually one of the first members of Class 1A introduced to us in the show. After Deku & Bakugo, we first met Uraraka, Iida, Aoyama, and Shoji at the UA Entrance Exam. It’s no wonder all 4 of those eventual classmates would have big moments in the story later
tbh, while i really like how MHA turned out, i do think horikoshi just completely underutilized shoji and a lot of students who seemed like they were ALWAYS going to be important, but ended up really only having a lot of screen time early on. i just wish they were about as prominent as ochako....they didn't have to be as important as bakugo or todoroki, but still
While it wasn’t at the forefront exactly, there have been a lot of instances of mutant prejudice that we’ve seen before this. Sometimes not even intentionally. Shoto Todoroki called the chief of police a “mutt,” and a member of Class 1-B saying that octopuses creeped her out to Shoji’s face. And then of course there’s the Creature Rejection Cult from last season. It’s a genuine problem that some people, heroes included, can gloss over at times. That leads us to here. Two different perspectives. Should heteromorphs tear down the corrupt system that enabled this kind of prejudice? Or should they prove the prejudice people wrong by becoming a part of that system? Either way, it’s hard to say whether or not that grudge will ever truly disappear. Biggest regret here though? Accepting those quirks from All for One. By manipulating the emotions of those who were wronged by society, he’s using their cause to further his own agenda. And now, the only person who could possibly understand what was going on, can barely speak properly. Ultimately, this cause was part of a bigger picture that speaks to the corruption of hero society, and changing the world for the better… Anyways, “BE GODZILLA” they said! “IT WOULD BE COOL” they said!
The funny thing is I was just listing all the background characters who've had their backstory told, only to realize there are a lot who haven't. Shoji was one of the first to come to mind. So turn around the next day and get this episode was kind of cool. I fear there will be no more exposition for other characters in the little time we have before the series is over. But then again how deep of a character could Sero, Sato, Kaminari, Jiro, Hagakure, Tsu, Mineta, or Yaoyarozu be in the grand scheme of the story lol
i just realized horokoshi totally should have included Jack in this arc since he ABSOLUTELY looks like the kinda guy that racists would fuck with. I'm surprised he wasn't here at all lol
"Do you guys get the reference Kota makes with Hitchcock's Birds? Let me give you a hint: Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds." You might want to be a little less subtle, Rhett. It's basically impossible to pick up on a hint like that
I want to be known horikoshi has confirmed all for one made shigi play single player games or LoL on single player mode because he kept destroying the monitor when playing online.
Subtle heteromorphobia in my hero includes shoto outright calling the dog police chief a mutt. There were jokes about the todorokis being secretly racist
This episode was great. When I first watched it, I saw people complaining saying things like "Oh this episode is filler" or "Skip this episode". That honestly ticks me off because My hero is such a good series, and it even does certain things better than some of the higher regarded anime's for example focusing on the entire cast instead of just the main character and his rival (~ cough~ Naruto Shippuden ~cough~). Like do people seriously not understand that the show isn't just called Midoriya vs Shigaraki it's My hero academia
Spinner losing his mind is not due to possessing multiple quirks, but probably a drawback to his Bulk Body quirk, similar to how Doctor Garaki's quirk makes him live longer in exchange for physical power. But yes, Spinner's position is the saddest since itd be very interesting to see a debate between him and Shoji, and itd probably rile up the crowd more. Its sad to see that not only was Spinner made to believe he was ugly because of his quirk, but also that he was also weak, leading him to seek out this power. He failed to understand that this issue cannot be resolved by pure strength, but by talking.
Thry did start to show it more last season with the tall woman Deku savws from some racist people, we then learn she was rejected from most shelters for being a heteromorph too
I think why we didn't see this in previous season. Because if you look at mha it was initially all bright and happyish like a child's world view but then as deku is maturing and seeing the nasty world and then we see the darkness of the world.
Ah yes, Kraken vs Dragon, the ancient battle continues. Notes: Koda's quirk is no longer limited to sound. And yes, the Manga referenced LoL directly. Warpgate is an artificial quirk created by fusing multiple quirks, would that make the replication process more difficult? Would you need a replica of all those quirks that went into one body and if you don't have them all you can't? Or Ujiko tried taking from Kurogiri factor directly not met with success?
Im not watching the entire discussion so I don't know if you caught it or not cause you were talking completely over it in the reaction but near the end the girl said "If I hadn't been drowning back then maybe your face wouldn't have gotten so scary". She didn't consider him scary or terrible up until he got those scars from his actions of saving her. That was a nice cherry on the top and I think a lot of people will miss that simple little detail.
By the way, I watched it on crunchyroll and the name of the game was LoL not "LooL" (Just like it was in the Manga) your subtitles are weird there but I watched it after you guys had already posted it on Patreon so maybe they fixed it?
Wtf are you talking about. We saw the discrimination that tall lady got last season. Is that not enough for you? Do you want more discrimination? We've heard small remarks all throughout the series about heteromorphs. Y'all just didn't catch it at the time and probably laughed
every other plot line for the final war was explicitly pointed out and developed during the whole series except for this one. it does well, but it could've been better. bones cutting so much content from mva isn't helping either. ofc we don't need people throwing rocks at heteromorphs every two chapters but more insight or conversations between characters would've built this a lot better
@@willfanofmanyii3751right, but the students could've been exposed to the discrimination at some point, like a mission to the country side or practical classes
@@willfanofmanyii3751 This would remain true if Shouji didn't explain his backstory at some point prior to PLW, meaning the students of 1A were all aware of it. 14:00 they didn't take away spinner's scene, it was reordered and was showed in season 6 ep 13 during his moment there
The funny thing is I was just listing all the background characters who've had their backstory told, only to realize there are a lot who haven't.
Joe confusing The Birds with Birdemic is the hardest I've ever laughed watching a reaction video.
Shiggy playing Solo League of Legends is so him 😅
Fun fact Jack Mantis' hometown was next to Shoji's, so he would probably understand Shoji the most since they both grew in the countryside
i just realized horokoshi totally should have included Jack in this arc since he ABSOLUTELY looks like the kinda guy that racists would fuck with. I'm surprised he wasn't here at all lol
@zzeroara9511 I was too, but that's the curse of being in 1-B (but don't worry he does do something this arc)
Shoji and Koda stocks going crazy in this episode. I love to see it
Honestly may be my favorite episode of the season LOL
@Blackout1077 it's amazing how many characters not named Sato get focus and interesting/hype character moments.
"Do you guys get the reference Kota makes with Hitchcock's Birds? Let me give you a hint: Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds."
You might want to be a little less subtle, Rhett. It's basically impossible to pick up on a hint like that
Birdemic be ka-kaw ka-kaw and a random gasoline station explodes
I think in the manga Shigaraki straight up says "League of Legends? I played that one" or something like that
I want to be known horikoshi has confirmed all for one made shigi play single player games or LoL on single player mode because he kept destroying the monitor when playing online.
Subtle heteromorphobia in my hero includes shoto outright calling the dog police chief a mutt. There were jokes about the todorokis being secretly racist
In the manga. Ordinary Woman (Tall Woman) varies from 2.6 to 3 meters (8ft 6in to 9ft 10in).
I remember you asked a long time ago what's the most toxic game Shigaraki has played. And little did you know you'd actually get an answer to that
0:04 Thank you for reminding me that the movie Shin Godzilla exists, I don’t want to ever forget it.
Sooo proud of Koda and Shoji in this episode
False
shoji got that SAKUGA
cried my eyes out
You guys are funny, turning your backs on the intro 🤣 Will you guys watch it when this season ends?
Yup the name League of Villains comes from League of Legends lol
Makes perfect sense xD
Once again I say: Spinner's got rabies lol
Thry did start to show it more last season with the tall woman Deku savws from some racist people, we then learn she was rejected from most shelters for being a heteromorph too
I agree Rhett, show me what you're saying is happening in the world
I think why we didn't see this in previous season. Because if you look at mha it was initially all bright and happyish like a child's world view but then as deku is maturing and seeing the nasty world and then we see the darkness of the world.
SHOJI SWEEEEEP
No way shoji ends racism
Did anyone tell the guys that spokesperson crab guy was there with the guy that killed Midnight?
Shoji is my boi!
Maybe you guys can react to godzilla movies lol since the music bio wars and shin godzilla
The anime makes spinner look even more yucky...thank you mha sesson 7.
Just hear the Japanese dub for that and he obviously says LoL, not LOoL.
why did you put the Mha logo there bro it interupted it💀💀
Wtf are you talking about.
@@gowon_supremacy That's the point the rioters made, the students and heroes are city kids, they don't know about the discrimination.
Instead of having a flashback to Shouji explaining his backstory, why not have it naturally occur at any point after Kamino, allowing an actual discussion on the plot point prior to the climax? It all just feels extremely last minute to give Spinner a foil.
@@theboibubba The flashback takes place after Midoriya returned to UA, so a few days earlier.
