    That’s a cool pattern ! As a newbie I appreciate how you explain that you can use different materials in place of others . At first I was getting caught up in I had to have exactly what someone said and it’s darn near impossible to have all the materials on hand . Thanks for sharing bud

      Yes indeed! It can be really hard to find all the materials, particularly with some of the older patterns. Thanks for the note my friend. :-)

    Good morning Matt.The little brook trout,what a great fly.I have tied 100s of these,along with little brown and little rainbow trout.I tie the little brook with squirrel tails for the top wing.I think it looks better than badger.No telling how many trout I have caught on this pattern.The select seven Weber sold are all great streamers.Great fly for Sat. Morning,one of my go to streamers.Have a great weekend Matt and everyone. Ken and Linda.

      That's so cool that you remember Weber's "Select Seven." That was a little before my time but I saw that picture from Mike Valla's book. They do look like a great set of streamers. I'm glad to hear that you use squirrel. I've got a lot more squirrel than badger. :-)

    Good morning Matt. Enjoyed the history of this streamer. I like the looks of streamer patterns and watching you tie them is always enjoyable. Thanks for keeping it real to remind me that not every fly a person ties should be shadow box material. I found some jungle cock but price was out of what I was willing to shell out. I picked up some synthetic ones to try ( somewhere a fly tying purist probably groaned) 😀. Take care Matt and have a great weekend. ☕️.

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  2 года назад +1

      Thanks John! I've never found any synthetic JC that I thought looked real enough. I did try an experiment with some white and yellow Tester's model paint, and painted the tips of some gray starling feathers. They were about the right size, but the paint just soaked in like crazy and spread all around. It wasn't a very successful experiment. Maybe it I hardened them up with some varnish first it could make it work. But now we're getting into a lot of work for something that we could probably just skip and they fly would work just as well. :-)

    This little trout pattern is one of my favorite types of streamers. They are very effective in many different waterways. I especially like them in Unstocked streams and small brooks. In streams that have brown trout moving in they are especially deadly in size 10-6. I found them to work especially in stained waters after rain. Thanks Matt for providing a different brook trot pattern.

    That Slaymaker Brook Trout Streamer is a great tie. Takes a bit of time to make so you sure as heck would hate losing it. A bit much for most Maryland streams but it would sure work on some larger, freestone rivers such as the Potomac or Jersey's Musconetcong or Paulinskill. My best trout was a 4lb. brown on the Paulinskill on Good Friday,1995 on a Gray Fox nymph.
    An old timer I used to fish with caught a 9Lb rainbow on the Paulinskill using a Golden Witch,( something I wish you would tie) back in 1993.
    Keep tying those great flies. I like watching, and sometimes tying along, your videos.

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  2 года назад +1

      Wow, a 4-pound brown is a monster! And I agree Ed, this fly usually takes me about 12-15 minutes and I hate losing something that takes so long! But I've found in a size 8 or 10, it's definitely not too big for the streams I fish, even the tiny blue lines when I'm out stalking brook trout.

    Ha, thanks Matt, I always wondered if Slaymaker was associated with the lock company. I like the little trout series. Those Weber flies were really dressed heavy, I like hairwings more on the sparse side, sort of like how you tied this one. Just can't pull real hard at first because it will act like Chinese finger cuff and pull tight... Just ease it out and it will come... Great pattern & the whole series is great too. I noticed several folks saying they couldn’t find affordable jungle cock. You can use stick-on eye which look pretty good when coated with lacquer or uv resin or by coloring a slip of Guinea fowl or speckled starling. If you have a real need/desire, there is a fly shop in Maine that is reliable. The last time I bought a neck, it cost about $120 (for a #1). He used to raise jungle cock & still sells them in 10 packs of eyes. I didn’t get a catalog this year, so I need to check that he is still open. I will let Matt know. I will call Alvin Monday.

      I think groundhog would be perfect Richard. It's got the brown, and light, and black bars as well.

    I love all that color Matt. Finally a reason to use all the goofy bucktail colors I have. The best hook I have for it is a 4X long #12. What do ya think? Lots of luck getting jungle cock eyes. What do you suggest as an alternative?

      Thanks Don! And I know what you mean. I've got all kinds of goofy colors of bucktail. :-) I think a 4x long #12 will be fine for this. I typically wouldn't go smaller than a #10 but you can make it work. As for the JC substitute, check out FlyTyer1948's comment on here. He mentions some good options.

      Yes, I know it does! It's actually a fluorescent orange, but with my lighting it looks more yellow. Here's the actual bucktail I used: drive.google.com/drive/folders/1GUs8wttvVMYNxOeNWq7SuXHrr5PwXtTe
