6:15 another 2 logs, essentially making a burnable fire ring, would’ve been my choice. Also all wooden matches today are a very poor facsimiles of the timber they used in pre-Depression America. The closest substitute would be a heavy duty fireplace match, cut down to 2.5-3 inches with a strike anywhere tip. The matches back when I got started backpacking (early 1980’s) were substantially heftier than the cheap crap sold at Walmart today. Heck I’d be tempted to sneak a farb move and use an UCO match. It’s a personal peccadillo but when purchasing matches today a fellow has 3 choices: Diamond Greens (terrible) Ohio Blue (better but they no longer make strike anywheres) or UCO (the best but expensive and completely period incorrect.) Even Zippo’s manufactured today are junk. At some point in the past 30 years they changed from the little gasoline bombs we finger popped in 1990 to a cheap feeling pot metal that kinda looks like the WW2 originals but the fluid evaporates every other day. Hands down the two best, most reliable fire starting methods with which we are blessed in 2023 are a good ol Bic and a 1/2” by 6” ferro rod. I loved this video. New sub.
I'd like you to add a bit of 'persona' to your reenactment of this period. It was fine to see your 'period' kit but I would have liked to see how the blankets came together to make a period bed. After you used the equipment, it is significant for you to tell us some specifics of how it worked for you and how you would modify your setup next time.🤔😊😊
Awesome video , hopefully you will do more but please show the cooking!
Great stuff, I focus on 1860’s but I love this era as well. Way to stick to it in spite of the cold wind forecast.
