Phil you really know how to interview and share other folks rigs. You listen, don’t interrupt and add your two cents at the right moments. Good job buddy😊 Thanks for sharing this amazing rig and Mac’s story. Have a great week❤️👍🏻
My name is misspelled, it is Mac not Mak. Great vid otherwise Phil, well done. It was nice meeting you and Julie as well as the other DIY campers. I wish I could have stayed at that location longer it was so beautiful overlooking Sedona!
I met Matt in San Felipe, Baja this winter at one of the beach side campgrounds. Super nice guy! We had coffee and chatted about travel, campers and life 🤘
@The, San Felipe! Fish tacos on the malacon! . Tragically, the 24/7 bar and restaurant 'The Bearded Clam' burned down. . Did you go for a soak at the hotsprings?
Always enjoy looking at other people’s build. As someone over 50, I’m looking at all options for a retirement build. Vans are in the forefront, but rigs like this are great examples of alternatives as vans have risen in price astronomically. Not saying this is cheap to build, but a Tacoma/Tundra build has greater availability and with builders like Scout and Kimbo, you can realistically put something together in a reasonable amount of time for less than a MB Van that is built out. Those guys building on MB act like they are doing you a favor getting you in for $200k. Enjoyed the video. Keep up the good work!
Sounds like uh huh you were about to fall asleep as was I listening to the explanation of everything. Cool build done get me wrong. Maybe I expect more exciting content while I sit on my porcelain throne
Hey dude! Awesome videos! I had a real hard time hearing your guest on this one though. Can I suggest investing in a LAV mic? DJI just made a new one that I've tried and it's actually really great. There are plenty of other options like the Sennheisier G series or the Rode Lavs. Syncing audio isn't hard anymore, most professional NLE's (editing software) have the feature. Otherwise keep up the great work!
His rig is pretty completely thought out as a “get out there” system! Very nice, as are yours and Julie’s rigs! Great interview/walkthrough! Prolly one of my all time favs so far on your channel!
Low center of gravity is so you don't roll over. Low polar moment of inertia is so you can recover from spinning sideways easier. Nice truck his and yours
I really like this rig, thanks for sharing. One question that I'm not sure about is why it's better to have the tire, tank, compressor in front of the camper. I know it's said to be for weight but is the camper so light that it wouldn't make more sense to move it forward instead? Especially when you look at all the weight of the stuff stored inside the camper and that the weight of water tanks and kitchen are at the rear of the camper. I understand the polar moment idea well enough but it just seems better to move the camper shell forward but I also don't know how much everything weighs.
Yeah I wonder how much difference it would make to the center of mass. Given the camper's weight is distributed over a large area, but the central items have much greater mass density, it kinda makes sense. From an offroading standpoint I would want as little as possible hanging off the back of the camper. if you look closely, it appears a portion of the camper is up against the cab of the truck w/ the cutout being for the spare.
@@taylorhickman84 but you’re moving 1000 pounds rearward to put 150 pounds in the middle, that doesn’t make sense to me especially when the heavy kitchen is at the rear of the 1000 pounds - I’m guessing at weights. I’m be no means an expert which is why I was hoping someone from Aterra would respond.
@@redracerproductions I think the math is more complicated than 150 vs 1000, but not knowing how the weight is distributed(especially given the cab over portion) through the camper I can't begin to make a solid assessment. At the end of the day I think it's 6 of one, half dozen of another. As for Aterra responding, I believe the owner said it was build by a friend who is no longer making campers, but the website looks current. Perhaps the title is wrong and this wasn't built by Aterra, because I can't imagine they would abandon a a project on such a popular platform, in a market that has a 2 year waiting list for most builders.
Great stuff, so did Atoverland build this rig or did the guy sell off to Atoverland? I see the AT ATERRA X online at Atoverland, looks just like this rig, just longer.

I am stuck in limbo needing a new vehicle, had a 2022 trd pro 4runner on order for last six months, nothing yet. Kinda thinking the 4th gen tacoma with 2.4L Turbo may be the way to go with better mpg overall, yet can still tow decent.
Amazing well thought out setup! I worry about the future of being able to setup a cross country Offroad vehicle like this with impending "all electric vehicle" laws coming our way. Not to get political but I hope our next president scraps that plan of forcing us into them. I just don't see it being possible for this lifestyle with current technology.

I swear it sounded like he said he had LED and HIV lights! I'm sure he said HID, but I'm thinking those are some nasty lights. He also needs to learn his rig! Yes its a Waterport. Yes its a Truma. Phil you knew it better than he did...
The Lightforce lights (AU) ARE both HID and LED and are awesome. Mucho light that I can control independently and can be set up so they both or singly go out at the same time as I dim or brighten my headlights.

Who is your builder you refer to?
@@ryanjaramillo8152 A friend. Sorry to be so vague, but he is not building any more campers.

Your audio is always great quality.

really well thought out camper!
That thing is awesome, I should do that to my '21 Tacoma, damn!

Wow what a well thought out overland vehicle. I can bet his years serving the citizens of the US came into play designing and coordinating the build.

No sink bowl. Curious to know a bit more about that.
We have a plastic folding sink, very compact, it pushes down to less than an inch high.
Awesome
Toilet is a must have. other than that it is perfect .
We have a bucket w/liners, WAG bags and a shovel. Enough 🙂 for us and we keep it all compact, a requirement.
Any idea the weight of the whole camper?
Less than 600#.

there’s die hard “taco fans” who’d do anything to overland in a tacoma. You’d be surprised how many people would buy this off him as is.
