Rescuing Nalanda's famous library

- Scholars from Tibet, China, Cambodia, Mongolia, and other places regularly visited Nalanda University to translate the books in its library. This is a precious collection of India's original knowledge that was highly sought after by everyone in the world. Later on, Muslim invaders burned down the entire library of Nalanda. When the Dalai Lama came from Tibet to India in the 1950s, he brought back several hundred Tibetan translations of these works. Infinity Foundation gave a grant to Columbia University 20 years ago to translate into English some of the most important books in Nalanda University that were burned by Muslim invaders centuries ago. That project has continued since then as a result of our foundation's historic role in the revival of Indian knowledge.

@@sureshashank9051 Yes,Bakhtiyar Khilji destroyed Nalanda University and put on fire it's library. But the figure 90 lakhs seems to be bit exaggerated. But the sad thing is that there is a nearby railway station namedas Bakhtiyar Khilji Junction. It's a meanest example of appeasement of Muslims. Aurangzeb road, Akbar road,Mughal garden in New Delhi are all examples of Muslim appeasement.😪

It is not easy to do and I can imagine the hours spent perusing the original and understanding it and then finding the right words & rhythm in English to best represent it. I just wish that I had enough money to buy all the books in multiple copies in order to preserve it and also fund this project further. Congratulations and thank you for your relentless effort towards Sanatana Dharma. I bow down to your lotus feet in reverence to your work for all humanity. 🙏🙏🙏

Yes, you are not only a trailblazer in directing your philanthropy towards reviving Indian traditions and lost knowledge but also setting the standards for other philanthropist’s to support causes that really matter to humanity. Why not translate backo Sanskrit? and then we can have an English, Telugu, other languages translation. Because there are Sanskrit non-translatables here, quoting RajivJi's own words

They are being translated back in Sanskrit and Hindi at Central University of Tibetan Studies at Sarnath, Varanasi.
There are 330+ volumes so it will take time. in 9AD Indian and Tibetan scholars produced the first Sanskrit Tibetan dictionary in 9AD primarily to translate Buddhist text from Sanskrit to Tibetan.

Recently i had a trip to Cambodia, Thailand and Indonesia - i must call it was a heritage trip. I was stunned to see the spread of Sanatan culture to those lands. I hv come to conclusion that any Hindu who is feeling low in India due to his religion he or she should visit these countries to feel confident about his faith.
Btw, can we have concept of Char Dham out of Bharat. Our forefathers have done their job of seeding Sanatan dharma in SE, its now our turn to spread message.

Thank you Dr.Rajiv Malhotra for undertaking a project for resurrecting our lost knowledge. Nalanda apart, there were world famous universities like Takshila, Vikramshila etc. They two were destroyed by invaders who were enemies of knowledge and for whom there scriptures were supreme, who could not think out of the box. I salute to our Tibbetan brothers whose hunger for knowledge were so high that propelled them to translate our books in Tibbetan. My heartfelt thanks to those Tibbetans and also to all those who are trying to bring back our forgotten knowledge to us.

Germany had been keeping palm leaf manuscript took from age-old Sanskrit library from South India And Well known Universities where nobody undertaken of Sanskrit studies not patronised by the Centre and States.
Tibetans even after brutally prosecuted by China are very generous and loyal, well they are Buddhists, what more we want. All good to Tibetans.

No need to cry 😭 about Nalanda or 🛕 Takahashi, in India still we have many hidden manuscripts roting away still not deciphered or preserved 40,000 of such manuscripts at Bhubaneswar's State Museum,palm-leaf manuscripts 📜 stacked in the museum. Most of them are written in the Oriya script, though the language is Sanskrit text was copied from one leaf to another. The oldest manuscript here belongs to the 14th century but the text can be dated to the 2nd century.
Many more in Rishikesh's(devpaayag) Varanavasi's haridwar's temples & National archive of India.
We need cutting edge tech like high-resolution X-ray detector that creates 3d map separating inc from material its used on, called HEXITEC Smithsonian museums are using. & can digitally archive our past.
India will be ever grateful to Tibet for preserving our ancient texts.

The original prayers always begin with the verse:
“in Bharat language…...etc., and the name of the Tibetan translator except those written by Tibetan scholars.
The main concern is to prove the authenticity of the text rooted in Bharat. The Tibetan translator is also mentioned by name.

What kind of philosophy says it is OK to burn libraries and destroy monuments? And this philosophy is still alive and well. The Bamiyaan Buddhas were blown up just a few decades ago, and the attempt on Salman Rushdie's life was just last year.
Islam and Christianity propagates that ideology because according to them their one book is enough and they don't need any more knowledge

I have to disagree with RM. Please produce links to text books of Nalanda University translated to English? All he says is, "That project has continued since .." which means no translations have succeeded? RM is know for making outlandish claims on modest success he has achieved! Translation from Prakrit. Not from Sanskrit. You are mixing Buddhism with Sanskrit which is actually in diametrical opposition. The Islamic invaders didn't burn Nalanda. They had no reason to burn. It was Buddhism and it's vast literature that was annihilated by the barbaric uncivilized people who are resigning the four pillars of democracy today.

The knowledge of the Ancient brahmins and their research saved by the Tibetan buddhist, thats something to be celebrated and to be grateful for, and the way they write that Indians usually identify with Hindu scripts, is funny given the fact that the whole knowledge system of Nalanda university was Vedic hindu system of knowledge, every knowledge and research basis was Vedic, as Vedas were the primary subject that was taught there from astronomy to mathematics, to Grammer, to Medicine(ayurveda), to logic, to alchemy, including the language and script, the basis of Buddhism is Vedic, the aspect of Dhyan, yoga and nirvana(moksha) , the distinction is nothing more than a matter of identification, or the fact that Buddhism, there is no social structure, where as social structure exists as the positions asigned as per aptitudes, given in Vedas explained beautifully in Gita, known as the Varana structure, because practically, it has Vedic origin, it explores some of the many different aspects of the Vedic Philosophy. And the Tibetan sages acknowledge it whole heartedly, everyone who studied the philosophies and literary work knows it. Still I don't understand why people treat them as different, even though History shows that, Buddhism and Jainism are two of many sects of Hinduism that is the Sanatan dharma, the Vedic culture and knowledge system, which is the native culture of the Indian subcontinent
British archeologists were mostly against Muslims and everywhere responsibility of destructions of ancient libraries, was put by them on Muslim invaders. Responsibility of destruction of famous library of Alexandria was also put by them on Muslim invaders. Hence, it is question of debate how those ancient libraries, if they were really existing, was destroyed and by whom.
Dear sir pl correct yourself .That time there was no Sanskrit and no hinduism.there were pali prakrit and Buddhism.Sanskrit has come after 1000 AD.

It is not true. Indian People chose Hinduism over Buddhism.
All translations from Tibetan should b done first in Sanskrit, then to other languages. Thus is because Tibetan is very near to Sabskrit and Devnagari, therefore, devils of translation would be minimum 😊
One request. Please do transalte and publish them in Hindi language also. Or at least translate them back to Sanskrit language.

The very fact that small bands of invaders could destroy your so-called knowledge centers like Nalanda especially when you outnumbered those invaders by tends of thousands to one only show that you did not have any common sense let alone "knowledge".

If somebody is coming to invade you, YOU have to defend against that, especially when you outnumber the invaders by tens of thousands to one. If the invaders outnumbered you then you can can use what you said as an excuse, but your case was the complete opposite. So no excused can be given.

All Nalanda masters , Nagarjuna to Dipankar Atisa , penned their work in high level Sanskrit. Today , if it's considered to translate it back again in Sanskrit from Tibetan , the stander of language would be maintained as same like Nalanda masters ?

Right now, tens of lakhs of ancient and mediaeval manuscripts and old books are rotting and getting destroyed due to aging in various libraries and homes. This is as great a tragedy as the burning of libraries at Nalanda. Currently, we have the technology to scan, digitise, study and preserve this knowledge. We should quickly attend to these digitisation and preservation efforts, instead of shedding crocodile tears and paying empty lip service to the preservation of Dharma.
