    Saw another urbex video of the old bridge inside the optimus culvert. I'm not an expert but I believe it to be probably one of the oldest structures in Manchester. As you say now invisible under the modern city. Just found your videos and thoroughly enjoying them. Your potted histories bring the locations to life far more than most similar videos.

    Cut metamorphic stone was often laid first because it held up better to currents carrying sand and other abrasive debris . It could also support more wieght .Then brick was used to build above water line because of lower costs. Stone was also used before they started using bricks from a kiln . Alot of historical layers of inovation , engineering and economics to peel back . Thanks again for the very nice videos ! Fantastic manhole !

    Never stop the "off topic" stories Martin, they are a great addition to what you are filming.. I remember "banker" locos on the Lickey incline south of Birmingham, I was on a train (about 1980) that was in trouble and stopped, could see the banker coming up to help but we got moving before it got to us, side stories bring back other memories and are great to hear...

      The concrete pipes from which you accessed the shaft would have been lowered down the large shaft and pushed with large hydraulic rams towards the large culvert. A man would be digging at the front of the new pipe and disposing of the spoil into a small skip on a trolley, this would be wheeled back and forth in the pipe and be lifted out by means of a crane sitting above the large vertical shaft. The overly large shaft is needed to accommodate the equipment needed for this modern type of pipe installation. The basins created inside at the bottom of the large shaft are to act as baffles to tame the water flow before it goes out into the main river.

    Amazing video as usual Martin. I don't think the stone base of the railway arches were just built on as the railway engineers would not know how strong the foundations were. Maybe the stone is better load bearing or more resistant to water damage. They were used for tunnels, shafts etc. as well, it was just a very common technique at the time to reinforce any kind of large circular hole in the ground against ground pressure in a watertight (against ground water ingress) fashion. The same technique is sometimes still used today (however using reinforced concrete instead of cast iron or steel segments is more common today), but the segments are much larger as they are lifted into place by machines. Back then, while there were machines that helped with the actual digging of the tunnels (drilling machines etc.), building the tunnel liner still often involved much manual labour, so the segments had to be small enough to be able to lift them into place by hand with two or three people.

    Have you been on a boy scout knot tying course? Gopro a little more expensive than a magnet.Happy to see your knot tying has improved. Enjoyed the video, thanks.

      Thanks very Much. I knotted it then clamped it into the bracket (It was on a bike mount) 👍

    great stuff. although the last knot you tied on a vid was the magnet when dragging for your drone and that didnt end well, so i was concerned for your gopro. all good in the end. top job as always.

      Hi Nik, Yes with my Knot tying failures I clamped it into the little bracket as well. Losing the Go Pro would have broke me

    the reason the tunnel changes from stone to brick is deliberate, stone would stand up to the constant dampness were brick wouldnt even engineering bricks, in a watercourse stone is allways best.

    great video mate. You certainly get in amongst the manky places of manchester. I didn't think young lewis was scared of spiders! ha ha. Suggestion: Have you been to see Torrs Hydro in New Mills yet? keep the vids a-coming mate.

    • @MartinZero
      @MartinZero  6 лет назад

      Lewis fell apart when he saw the spiders 😆I think I have heard of it, is it like a bridge on the side of a ravine ?

    • @jaycee7594
      @jaycee7594 6 лет назад

      Thats correct. a gorge that runs through the town where they harness a bit of hydro electricity. Interesting to say the least.

    Fascinating video Martin, can you tell me, are the culverts usually as shallow as the one you walked across or do they go deeper?

    • @MartinZero
      @MartinZero  6 лет назад +1

      Hi Tony well I would have thought some are much deeper. I walked across that one like an old woman cos I really could't be arsed slipping and getting wet, plus the bottom was very uneven and treacherous 👍😃

    Any idea if the Irk wire leading into the Victoria station culvert was to feed a nearby mill or is was built as part of the culvert?

    • @n0rmanski
      @n0rmanski 2 года назад

      Found the answer, it looks like it fed a corn mill called Town's Mill in 1850
