Thanks for posting this video. I've got a book called Underground Manchester by Keith Warrender which has a section about the canal in it....this video has made the book so much clearer.
Fascinating! I grew up in Sale in the 50s/60s and used to spend a lot of my time in Manchester, but I never knew about the underground canal and tunnel......very interesting to learn about the history of Manchester, thank you for posting it! :)
Its a grate pitty these canals cant be restored to expose the victorian underworld of Manchester, Would make fantastic guided walks, The history of Manchester is so facinating, Lets hope we have more of these discoverys.
Only one tunnel was completed. Various things have been suggested for the tunnel from nightclub to 'an underground experience'. The tramway route is already established on the surface and unfortunately the canal tunnel goes in the wrong direction. The biggest problem is that the tunnel in its lower levels floods. KH
Great vid! The underground dock is amazing. I got a bit lost with the maps. Which is the new canal tunnel as there are two? Can this be used as tram tunnel in any way, as it runs under the GMex. Taking trams under the centre on manchester must a bonus.
Hello Ken, Did you say the Irwell was an artery between Manchester & Liverpool? I remember being a kid going to Buile hill & we walked the Itwell up to Colne (I think?) Am I wrong on this ha ha? Love the video! Very interesting indeed !
@balenogs1 My dad took me into the Nuclear Shelters under manchester when he worked fro the then GMC. Theres 3 entrences the one we went down is under the old GMC office on portland st
