Michael Angelo has always inspired people, myself included, to practise more and more importantly, practise slowly to give your brain enough time to process licks at a slow speed just so the player can speed up afterwards. Now watching this video has reminded me how lucky we are to have access to such great material from a legendary guitarist. Thank you so much for everything MAB !
Fucking hell !! The real MAB replied to my message ! I'm gonna celebrate by playing a 1000 Maj arpeggios and all the major modes on all my guitars :) Thank you so much, Michael Angelo and God bless you :)
This guy is a good teacher...he is (intentionally or unintentionally) using the "sandwich method". You star with a slice of bread (compliment the student on something he is doing good), the meat is the criticism (i.e. telling the student what he is doing incorrectly) and finish with a slice of bread (reaffirm the compliment). If I had a teacher, this is the guy I would want to teach me.
We are blessed to see a guy so good with so little ego. Michael understands how much of the shred pose is just for the show and only displays the rockstar personality when it matters. The rest of the time he seems to be just an approachable person with tremendous passion for the guitar and what makes it a kick ass instrument. Long live to you MAB!
It's great to watch somebody that plays quickly so naturally help those of us that have been working on speed for years. Thank you, Mr. Batio, for taking the time to share your knowledge. MK
My buddy and I hung out with Mike after a Nitro show in South Florida in the late 90s. He was gracious enough to hang out and talk about his gear etc with us after blowing our minds with the band
I am not a guitar player. I am a drummer of 40 years. My name is also Michael Angelo..I have to say that he is an amazing teacher. Pointing out what each player needs to be better but also pointing out what they are doing good. I have to give these players much respect for playing in front of a master and accepting the criticism. They must have been nervous too.....If I had to play drums in front of Neil Peart , or Portnoy, or Steve Smith or any of my heroes, I probably would drop the sticks....Great bunch of guys here and Michael is a great teacher and amazing player
Thank you, I do take note that the students are nervous and try to take that into account. I want everyone to walk away feeling like they learnt something from the lesson. That is my main goal.
You're a really humble teacher the way you approach and remind students that you mean well with your criticism. That's a really good quality to have as an instructor if not the most important.
Michael is one of the greatest players to ever walk the face of the planet and zero ego. I've got to hang out with him and open for him several times. Some of the greatest times of my life.
i was always intimidated by players like MAB back in the 80s/90s but never saw him in a class format. He's so ingratiating with the students, helping and instructing without being negative in any way. MAN i could sit in front of him for hours and learn. I started w Paul Gilbert a few years back and he's the same way. if Michael was ever around here, i'd be there in a second! SUBSCRIBED
Great lesson, Mike. The phrygian fella has a nice sense of melody. It's a great teacher that can take something and show some results to a student in an instant, especially a technique that takes years of practice and dedication. I'm sure this inspired them to go home and practice this. Kudos, Mike.
Mr. Batio, I just have to say that your patience and humility demonstrated in this video is a true inspiration for us students! What a gift you have, sir. Thank you and God bless you!
This was so kind. I remember watching your two-handed guitar video years ago and being completely blown away. I even made a makeshift bracket to hold my old righty and my brother's lefty at the same time! To hear you speak with such kindness and patience, and share your knowledge, is truly inspiring. You have my like, subscribe, and true admiration. Thank you.
Apart from your musical talent, one thing is to have the knowledge or be an expert in something and another different beast is to be good at transmitting or teaching what you know. You're very good at teaching and that's something not every pro can make.
Mike is such an awesome teacher! He first compliments each student on what they do correctly and then he tells them their difficulties very tactfully and not in a condensending way. He knows how to bring out the potential of each student without beating them down because they haven't gotten there yet!
Michael, you're a great person with extraordinary skill in playing guitar. You're always complimenting everyone and focus on the positive aspect of each person. I, an amateur guitarist, sometimes just try to find weakness in another guitarist. It's a bad habit and you just teach me how to stop it. Thank you.
A great teacher finds what the student is doing right and builds on it. Michael Angelo Batio is not only an absolutely incredible guitarist, but a natural teacher. I could listen to him play, and teach, all day.
I will never forget watching Michael on one of his star licks video's back in 1986....one of his secrets was telling his mum he was too sick to go school so he could get more time to practise! That was hilarious Michael !
That was brilliant to watch. Been following you since my first days of playing guitar (2009) and I have to say that you're still my favorite shred/virtuoso guitar player. Took me years to at least nail the A minor sweep arpeggio at 12 fret so hopefully I'm still doing something right yet there's a lot of room to improve. Thanks for inspiration Michael, hope to finally see you someday in Russia (and I know you've visited my country multiple times).
Some fun fact from the past: Many years ago when I was watching some of Michael's video for the first time I was absolutely sure that it was sped up, it looked just impossible to play so fast and clear at the same time :D Now, from many years' perspective I see how wrong I was then. It's heartwarming that one of the best guitar player on this planet is so kind and humble guy, cheers! :)
- Hand synch is life. - Fretboard knowledge: play exercises up and down the neck. (I'm assuming this is the equivalent to what Joe Pass once said, "Play the same lick in all positions.") - Play fast, no matter if it sounds sloppy. Feel the need for speed... \m/ Thank you so much, Michael Angelo.
When he said "let me show you what you did right" I gained so much respect for him. Literally could've ended the guys entire playing career with a couple discouraging words.
I don't even remember the name of the video, but it was maybe 20 years ago or more that I learned a wonderful picking technique from you. It was a 3 string arpeggio (coincidentally using the same diminished arpeggio the last guy played through the phrygian dominant mode here). It included the sweep from the G string up to the high E string, but then hitting that high E string again on the sweep back down. Only using a triad though, just the one single note on the high E string, but hitting that same note twice. Perhaps it sounds simple when put that way, but it gives a super cool sound that doesn't sound simple at all, because it doubles the highest note, something that is somewhat common among virtuoso violin players. It also helped me figure out how to play some of the Paganinni violins caprices I had been struggling with before then. At first my head more than fingers didn't want to do it, but it soon became very natural, and now it's in a few of the pieces I've written over the years using the diminished still sometimes, but also Major and minor, or even 7ths and 9ths etc in various combinations. I even employ a very similar technique now using string skipping as well. Sometimes I will also double the lower note as well and that creates another cool effect. Those are all staple riffs for me now and I never have to think about them anymore. Not only that, but the idea led me to discovering some great things using three note per string pentatonic scales and alternate picking to also double up certain notes with far more ease than I would be able to achieve otherwise. So you can see that that one little lesson sparked quite a lot more ideas for me since. It's been years now and I'm really happy to get the chance to say thanks finally. I wish I had this same chance to thank others who helped me in my musical journey as well. Even if you don't read this, I want people to know how much that one lesson did for me in the long run. So Thanks again. ^-^ Edit: and subscribed of course.
For myself, It's not the fact that MAB is fast, a ton of players on insta are fast. It's the fact he can play both left and right handed equally as fast.
Great insights. I got to meet Michael two days in a row years ago, once at a clinic he was hosting at a neighboring town and the next day at a solo set he did at a bar close to where I live. At the end of the show he let people pose with his dual guitar onstage, and he said that it looked natural in my hands as I was "playing" it, which is to date the best compliment I've gotten from a famous musician. Point of that story was to echo everyone's sentiment of how genuine Michael is. Hell I'm mainly a keys player now but watching this makes me want to put hours into guitar like my teenage years. haha
Thanks for stopping by to check out the video! I have more lesson content on my RUclips Channel, so be sure to like & subscribe for more lessons!

You star with a slice of bread (compliment the student on something he is doing good), the meat is the criticism (i.e. telling the student what he is doing incorrectly) and finish with a slice of bread (reaffirm the compliment). If I had a teacher, this is the guy I would want to teach me.
I think that is really good advice on speed..."You've got to force yourself to play as fast as you can, even if it's sloppy as heck."
Michael is a great teacher and player. He does not flaunt his skills he tries to bring everyone to his level.
It's great to watch somebody that plays quickly so naturally help those of us that have been working on speed for years.
Thank you, Mr. Batio, for taking the time to share your knowledge.
MK
I am here to help!
I love how he's consistently teaching and encouraging at the same time. I'm definitely gonna spend much more time on my PPS 🙂
Nicest person you’ll ever meet met him at a guitar seminar in the 90s!!!...🤙😎🤘
Thanks! Hope to see you again soon!
Michael Angelo Batio
You should do a G3 with Paul Gilbert and Brandon Ellis!!!...That would be AWESOME!!!...
My buddy and I hung out with Mike after a Nitro show in South Florida in the late 90s. He was gracious enough to hang out and talk about his gear etc with us after blowing our minds with the band
Listen_good
He did seminars after his REH video Speed Kills was released that’s when we saw him!!!...🤙😎🤘
Lots of patience. I wonder how he keeps from cringing or being pissed of.
Dude! I love the fact Michael tells a story about his life, too. It's really nice to hear his happy memories. :)
I try to be as beneficial for the student as I can be, thanks!
This exzellent player could be arrogant. Not being arrogant with that bunch of skills is true masterhood.
Michael is one of the greatest players to ever walk the face of the planet and zero ego. I've got to hang out with him and open for him several times. Some of the greatest times of my life.
Metalbass79 yeh maybe... but he has to give Joan Jett that wig back😆
I’m not even a musician and even I found this really cool. What a great teacher and awesome kind personality. 👍🏼👍🏼
MAB is not only a guitar god but an exceptionally friendly and down to earth person too. I love how cool and encouraging he is as a teacher.
i was always intimidated by players like MAB back in the 80s/90s but never saw him in a class format.
Thanks man, I'm the phrygian fella 🤘
Great teacher on display here. Awesome advice and awesome techniques to practice.
Glad you find the information helpful, Gabriel!
He really is such a class act. He is so nice and insightful. MAB Rules!!!
Means a lot to me John, thanks!
Thank you.
Your smile and soft voice just warms my heart. And you explain it so calmy it feels like it's not that difficult.
Wow, thank you!
Apart from your musical talent, one thing is to have the knowledge or be an expert in something and another different beast is to be good at transmitting or teaching what you know. You're very good at teaching and that's something not every pro can make.
Thank you, I try to help the student best I can!
The world needs more people like Michael.
Respect. He loves teaching. He loves when his students improve. He's a gift.
That is the only goal of mine, to help them improve 🤘
Mike is such an awesome teacher! He first compliments each student on what they do correctly and then he tells them their difficulties very tactfully and not in a condensending way. He knows how to bring out the potential of each student without beating them down because they haven't gotten there yet!
Michael, you're a great person with extraordinary skill in playing guitar. You're always complimenting everyone and focus on the positive aspect of each person. I, an amateur guitarist, sometimes just try to find weakness in another guitarist. It's a bad habit and you just teach me how to stop it. Thank you.
When he mentioned "Feel the Need for Speed" i immediately felt identified with how ive learned how to shred and i can garante it definitely works
It works, just takes practice!
I respect him for this. Passing down the knowledge to the next generation.
A great teacher finds what the student is doing right and builds on it. Michael Angelo Batio is not only an absolutely incredible guitarist, but a natural teacher. I could listen to him play, and teach, all day.
Great teacher. His ability to be vulnerable and connect with his students is a true gift. Much respect.
I really love this guy he is very humble. So professional really good at his thing.
Thanks for watching Mark!
I will never forget watching Michael on one of his star licks video's back in 1986....one of his secrets was telling his mum he was too sick to go school so he could get more time to practise! That was hilarious Michael !
Star Licks is the first time that type of lesson was ever given. I've been thinking about uploading some segments from it.
What a huge HONOR to have the Best Guitarist and Master of all times. Doctor Michael Angelo Batio
You're a great teacher, Michael!
Thank you Charles!
- Hand synch is life.
- Fretboard knowledge: play exercises up and down the neck. (I'm assuming this is the equivalent to what Joe Pass once said, "Play the same lick in all positions.")
- Play fast, no matter if it sounds sloppy. Feel the need for speed... \m/
Thank you so much, Michael Angelo.
Wouldn't you want to play slower to make sure you have it down, rather than play fast and not be as clear?
I never knew he was such a nice guy - really patient and positive instructor.
Thanks Sean!
Michael Batio and Jeff Waters are not only amazing guitar players, music writers, but also 0 ego people. Amazing dudes, both.
What an inspiring guy. You can tell he truly wants to help people learn, it’s about the students. Class act!
MAB, you're such a class act, wonderful teacher
Thank you!
Never thought how humble he is in front of these people.
Such an encouraging and utterly likeable guy.
I'm a drummer. I have always been extremely impressed and fascinated by Mike's playing and attitude. Such an amazing person and player.
I'm so happy he has his own youtube channel and uploads regularly. These learning vids are such a nice thing to do.
he is actually pretty chill tho ngl
Thank you!
08:35 guy plays open strings and MAB says are you tuned down a little bit.. I want that kind of ear training.. wow
Thanks for noticing!
Haha I mean that was super low
I hope you're joking, it sounds quite obvious compared to E standard
Hell...I'm a bass player and find this video fascinating. Love Mike and his teaching is very informative.
Trance 9 Same for me. I play bass and always find something in Michael’s videos I can use to improve myself.
Thanks again Michael for sharing!
Thanks! I am glad to be able help my students grow into stronger musicians.
Hi Roger! Thanks!
Michael is a great teacher and a humble person. He encourages and does not show off
When he said "let me show you what you did right" I gained so much respect for him. Literally could've ended the guys entire playing career with a couple discouraging words.
So true what he says about watching your picking hand.
Yes! Thanks.
Edit: and subscribed of course.
What a nice fella MAB is - he clearly understands what it means to educate giving good advice but not forgetting to say what people are doing right.
Really laid back, man...nice change of pace. Bravo, brother. Props to the fellow guitarists putting themselves out there.
It's like a grandpa telling stories to the grandchidren, that's so so cool to watch!
7:08 ...and that pick was never found again.
Into the abyss.
@@MichaelAngeloBatioOfficial .... hahahahaha
Rip pick!!!!
For myself, It's not the fact that MAB is fast, a ton of players on insta are fast. It's the fact he can play both left and right handed equally as fast.
Thank you Steve!
Hell I'm mainly a keys player now but watching this makes me want to put hours into guitar like my teenage years. haha
Such humble guy, excellent lesson. I'm not a shredder but really like MAB talk. U learn so much.
Now im sitting here like an idiot tremolo picking for 20 min 😂
Yes! Work on that PPS!
@@MichaelAngeloBatioOfficial omg no way! I definitely will work on it!!
