Great stuff man, You're as good a teacher as you are a guitarist.
I wish I could attend your masterclass sir.
Just a class act , it's great to see you interact on such a personal level.
You seem like a really modest guy. Awsome!!!!
Thats was very cool Michael, totally understandable and makes sense, thanks for sharing!
Props to these guys for having the courage to play in front of him
I have a lot questions about my techniques for him, but I probably barely to touch my guitar in front of this legend.
@@rizqibayumantari6769 exactly how I would prolly feel
Hell I'd be pissed off I didn't
@@rizqibayumantari6769 Wrong approach, don't shy out, every player no matter the level has a special skill that many might appreciate without you even knowing it.. in today's standards (if i would care) i¡m a mediocre guitar player, but when jamming with those technical machines (over talented players) they envy one talent i naturally had since a kid, its called improvising and that is hard to learn..... And remember the majority of the rock/pop hits are songs with very basic structures, few notes and simple melodies enhanced with vocals etc... Thats something youngsters and technical minded players tend to forget, the basic music listener cannot tolerate too technical stuff... so its up to you if you want to play& create music for musicians or for audiences.....
It wasn't bad really. He's a very nice guy, and he gives honest feedback on your playing without being an egotistical jerk. I took this class a few weeks ago and it was awesome.
To me, Michael is basically Yngwie without the ego.
Thank you, Yngwie is a great player!
@@MichaelAngeloBatioOfficial You're welcome Michael. I don't think I have ever seen Yngwie play a double necked guitar though. Maybe it's not quite his style.
Yngwie not ego.
That mouth should smell like glans.
LOL....I thought the same thing here ...
What a gentleman. Not only a gifted artist but a gifted teacher.
yea. i wish he added "spasm" for speed.. he explained it well with anger tho gnnnn mean it!.. for me its become crisp stiff and spasmy, for tremolo and high speed in general, but it lack emotion and preicsion
And u can tell he is really humble .
He taught for years when he was younger, his technique for teaching is great
He is a true gentleman, humble and polite, thats what truly makes me feel respect
And down to earth humble simple person
Tom Morello said in an interview that he spent 10 mins with this guy and it changed his guitar playing forever.
I heard that on Howard Stern!
Tom morello is the worst professional guitar player. Any lesson is helping his playing
made my day@@klauskarlkraus
Both idiots.⬆️
Refreshing to see a "guitar god" sit with normal people and interact with them without ego. Awesome player and awesome dude by the looks of it.
I hope I can help them grow into better players, that is my only goal!
@@MichaelAngeloBatioOfficial Thats awesome sir
@@MichaelAngeloBatioOfficial How much is it?
Met Michael over 10 years ago at a clinic, sat and talked to my buddy and I for almost 40 minutes, super nice guy! I still have almost all of his dvds old and new.
I had the pleasure of meeting him in Dubuque, Iowa in 2019. He was so engaging with the audience and did a meet and greet for pics and autographs after the show. Michael is so personable and genuinely friendly. I will be a fan for life!!
For a master guitar player, he seems surprisingly genuine.
awesome person!!!!
Yeah, I used to not like him because I thought he was just another shredder, but this video changed my mind about him.
@@saintrhoads3375 Same here
He seems really cool and down to earth. Wish I made it to the yearly Dean DOA party a few years back when he was there. :/
And why wouldn't he be?
He’s so genuine and kind I told him ever since my son was a year old he would crawl and walk over to our guitars and pluck the strings and he shook my hand for that. I was there at jjs for this show and I was in tears at the end of the show I was moved by the music
Thank you for commenting. Great post!
So much kindness and patience. What a great teacher!
Thank you, I appreciate that!
06:48 MAB clarifying he knows those dudes were nervous by playing in front of him is one best things I've seen in my entire life. I mean, they're playing at a 65-80% of their capacities and MAB knows that. What a cool guy.
It definitely can be intimidating performing in a setting like this where every aspect of your playing is being analyzed by everyone in the room, but its always probably the best way to grow into a better musician. You can hear feedback from lots of other great players.
@@MichaelAngeloBatioOfficial
Hi Mike , i really like the Speed Kills Course, the 3 and 4 string groupings for scale sequences are really great, how you skip a note at the bottom and top to keep the momentum is the best thing i have seen in years.
I have several of your CDs "Double Planet" is one of my favorites.
You used to have backing tracks for sale, are they on Metal Method, or available somewhere else now?
@@MichaelAngeloBatioOfficial hey Michael what's your thoughts on economy picking? All the best :)
@@MichaelAngeloBatioOfficial We all rock 8)
@@MichaelAngeloBatioOfficial It's a wonderful way to grow if you're receiving constructive feedback focusing on what you're doing well and how you can positively improve. That shows a lot of maturity and respect. Many younger people lack that.
I feel patience and empathy whilst teaching tells you a lot about a person, and this is off the scale! Great work. You'd walk away from something like this inspired, where I've walked away from teachers thinking "I'm awful, I know nothing".
I really appreciate how you're keeping the community aspect of music alive. One of these days, I hope I have the opportunity to learn from you like this.
When touring comes back, I will be giving master classes exactly like this before my shows, so the opportunity will be there!
Hey, please share more of such lessons. Its great.
Glad you find this video helpful!
@@MichaelAngeloBatioOfficial I totally still dig your instructionals. Learned sweep picking, maybe 5 yrs ago or so, from some of your videos. I still go straight to the Am an octave up to do warm ups and I pretty much picture you breaking it down each time. I had already been playing guitar for over 25 years at that point and wanted to finally learn how to do it, so I obviously went looking for MAB videos online. Never too old to learn.🤘
BTW, just checked out Sawtooth and the Americana series looks super, and super affordable. Kudos to everyone! Seems like a move in the right direction.
Subscribed!! Well thought out answers and direction in this Masterclass! Thank you Michael Angelo Batio! \M/
It's impossible not to like Michael, he can have make people laugh while teaching something serious and not lose the teachings.
I wish more people were like that.
Rock on everyone!!🎸💥💥🎸💥
Thanks for the kind words! I am glad you are able to find value in my teachings!
I love the guy ... his speaking voice is better than any Pixar character. He's a great teacher.
@@MichaelAngeloBatioOfficial great teaching. one good example for teaching hand sync is visualize an alternate picked triplet as a single movement for the sake of speed and then sync it with a three note run. also , my favorite which i think devin townsend taught me in high school was to watch especially fretting hand movement and minimize it.
@@MichaelAngeloBatioOfficial where can I buy your programs.
Brilliant Michael! So helpful !
I'm not a MAB fan, but it's completely obvious what a lovely, talented man he is. And a patient, positive teacher is invaluable to any community.

There is no universe in existence where you could not be a fan of MAB.

I hope so! I want to help as many players as I can, whether its my online lessons, Metal Method or classes like this!
You’re a great teacher Micheal love watching your videos man
Hi Randy! I appreciate you watching.
Randy gang
Yes sir, I can tell how easy going this class is one minute in. Great job.
Hello,Michael I saw and have a burned copy of speed killls also a few of the dvds GUITAR PLAYER magazine put out.Im a left handed player and need to learn to confidently navigate the fretboard.being a left handed player in a right handed dominant world makes it difficult to adavance quickly. Which of your dvds would help me to achieve this?
I didn't know that Michael put so much time into mechanics, theory of pick motion and didactics. It was a wise thing to dial such a tone into the amp that he could hear all the flaws and sloppyness in them playing.
You are a treasure Mike, these folks are receiving priceless information, the years required to gather, hone and then pass on that expertise is so commendable.
Hi Klaus! I hope everyone finds the information here valuable!
This is like watching Socrates sharing knowledge and wisdom at the entrance of Temple of Apollo, all gathered together around the grand master.
Michael is incredibly kind to EVERYONE in the room. He listens to what each has to say... Always acknowledging. Wow. What a great human.
I’m learned how to be a better guitarist & human being after watching this. He does a great job explaining complex concepts.
I am glad you find value in my content! 🤘
How can you not love Michael?
Amazing guitarist and a HUMBLE down to earth guy ! Thanks for the video
Sean G my thoughts exactly
Sean, you rock. Thanks for watching!
The way this man humbled himself greatly to teach others. Truly a great guitarist, with patience and humility
Thank you for the very kind words!
This is really a master class. MAB is an old school guitarist, so he really teaches in the most didactic way possible and is concerned with learning. Impressive his friendliness in this video as well as interest in teaching. You are the man, and im your brazilian fan !
The best thing about this legend is he takes out time for everyone and even reply on RUclips comments too. He is not only an excellent gifted guitarists but also a gentle discipline human being who knows to manage time and play guitar and responses his fan.
Thanks! 😁🎸🎸
Nicest person you’ll ever meet met him at a guitar seminar in the 90s!!!...🤙😎🤘
Thanks! Hope to see you again soon!
Michael Angelo Batio
You should do a G3 with Paul Gilbert and Brandon Ellis!!!...That would be AWESOME!!!...
My buddy and I hung out with Mike after a Nitro show in South Florida in the late 90s. He was gracious enough to hang out and talk about his gear etc with us after blowing our minds with the band
Listen_good
He did seminars after his REH video Speed Kills was released that’s when we saw him!!!...🤙😎🤘
Lots of patience. I wonder how he keeps from cringing or being pissed of.
Michael is even more decent, genuine & curious than I would've guessed him to be, & I heard of him first back during Nitro in 88-89.
I'd be honored to sit in a class with this amazing player!
Music is so much fun. ❤️
Thank you!
Probably the most down to earth guitarist I have ever seen. I would feel privileged to meet him let alone be in his class or play in front of him🤘
When you're Michael angelo batio, you're allowed to say "I'm a great guitar player"
I think that is really good advice on speed..."You've got to force yourself to play as fast as you can, even if it's sloppy as heck."
I've been following you for nearly 20 years, but I've never seen you in this kind of intimate setting. It's beautiful seeing your interest and patience as you help people improve. For as long as I've been playing, I've always felt that my picking style has severely limited my ability to play fast, cleanly. But after listening to you and knowing that there's almost no wrong way to play gives me peace of mind. Thanks.
Thank you for following me over the years Bret, I am glad you like the new style of content I am putting out! There will be lots more lessons like this coming via my RUclips channel!
As a classroom music teacher I really appreciate watching MAB's willingness to connect with his audience. He's making it all about helping the other people in the room. This is fantastic!
he is actually pretty chill tho ngl
Thank you!
Started my guitar journey 15 years ago. I've always thought of you as one of the names at the very top of the pyramid. You're an absolute pleasure to watch and listen to- you've really grown into teaching in a great way, something which I know has always been apart of you and it's been a pleasure watching it come out in so many various ways- from the Speed Kills VHS tapes in the 80's to RUclips today, totally awesome!
Thank you Shamino! I am glad I can help you be a stronger player 🤘
MAB. Very humble at teaching and not a show off or bragging about his skills.
Love this dude.
Appreciate that, thank you.
So true what he says about watching your picking hand.
Yes! Thanks.
my band width Rusty Cooley in the early 90s was called Revolution and we opened for you guys (Nitro) at a place called livewire and you were really cool. I love the way you teach.
Thats awesome, Robert! The good old days!
@@MichaelAngeloBatioOfficial I go by Bobby and I was the bass player. Rusty and I are still great friends and teaching music in the Houston area. I remember that was a hell of a show. I might have some of it on a VHS somewhere.
@@MichaelAngeloBatioOfficial I remember you telling me something about some of my licks reminded you of Billy Sheehan and that made my day!
This guy is a good teacher...he is (intentionally or unintentionally) using the "sandwich method". You star with a slice of bread (compliment the student on something he is doing good), the meat is the criticism (i.e. telling the student what he is doing incorrectly) and finish with a slice of bread (reaffirm the compliment). If I had a teacher, this is the guy I would want to teach me.
Absolutely love how supportive he is to everyone. That type of encouragement is so important. Seems like a really good guy.
The man is a living legend, a fountain of knowledge and he is giving it out to us so kindly and humbly, that I can't do anything less than wholeheartedly thank him! Good bless and take care Mr. Batio!!
Thanks for enjoying the lesson Greg!
@@MichaelAngeloBatioOfficial It is one of the beautiful things in life to see someone so happy doing what he loves, actually living and breathing it!
And when that someone shares all this love and knowledge so openly, makes our lives better, especially in the times we're living. We're in lock down at the time, due to coronavirus measures so it goes I'll be riffing all day and practicing like crazy!!
Michael Angelo has always inspired people, myself included, to practise more and more importantly, practise slowly to give your brain enough time to process licks at a slow speed just so the player can speed up afterwards. Now watching this video has reminded me how lucky we are to have access to such great material from a legendary guitarist. Thank you so much for everything MAB !
I am glad to be able to inspire as many of you as I can!
Fucking hell !! The real MAB replied to my message ! I'm gonna celebrate by playing a 1000 Maj arpeggios and all the major modes on all my guitars :) Thank you so much, Michael Angelo and God bless you :)
Just amazing to watch one of the greatest modern players just interacting with fans with absolutely no ego , sharing his phenomenal skills and knowledge .I have always thought he was a great player , but this vid shows that he is just a fucking awesome person . Total respect..
Michael is a great teacher and player. He does not flaunt his skills he tries to bring everyone to his level.
I respect him for this. Passing down the knowledge to the next generation.
It's great to watch somebody that plays quickly so naturally help those of us that have been working on speed for years.
Thank you, Mr. Batio, for taking the time to share your knowledge.

I am here to help!
When he mentioned "Feel the Need for Speed" i immediately felt identified with how ive learned how to shred and i can garante it definitely works
It works, just takes practice!
We are blessed to see a guy so good with so little ego. Michael understands how much of the shred pose is just for the show and only displays the rockstar personality when it matters. The rest of the time he seems to be just an approachable person with tremendous passion for the guitar and what makes it a kick ass instrument. Long live to you MAB!
You're a legend mate. Thankyou so much for sharing your ideas.
08:35 guy plays open strings and MAB says are you tuned down a little bit.. I want that kind of ear training.. wow
Thanks for noticing!
Haha I mean that was super low
I hope you're joking, it sounds quite obvious compared to E standard
Michael is one of the greatest players to ever walk the face of the planet and zero ego. I've got to hang out with him and open for him several times. Some of the greatest times of my life.
Metalbass79 yeh maybe... but he has to give Joan Jett that wig back😆
Really laid back, man...nice change of pace. Bravo, brother. Props to the fellow guitarists putting themselves out there.
I love how he's consistently teaching and encouraging at the same time. I'm definitely gonna spend much more time on my PPS 🙂
You're a really humble teacher the way you approach and remind students that you mean well with your criticism. That's a really good quality to have as an instructor if not the most important.
I try to be as beneficial for the student as I can be, thanks!
This exzellent player could be arrogant. Not being arrogant with that bunch of skills is true masterhood.
I've never thought the picking hand was so important. I've always undervalued it.
I've also never thought to slow down my playing in order to play fast. Thank you so much for posting this, you are the best guitarist ever, and your lessons are great! \m/
I'm so happy he has his own youtube channel and uploads regularly. These learning vids are such a nice thing to do.
Michael, you make the world a better place. Thanks for everything.
I’m not even a musician and even I found this really cool. What a great teacher and awesome kind personality. 👍🏼👍🏼
I really love this guy he is very humble. So professional really good at his thing.
Thanks for watching Mark!
Michael, you are absolutely awesome dude, I’ve used a few of your tips for a well, I appreciate you man 110%
I am not a guitar player. I am a drummer of 40 years. My name is also Michael Angelo..I have to say that he is an amazing teacher. Pointing out what each player needs to be better but also pointing out what they are doing good. I have to give these players much respect for playing in front of a master and accepting the criticism. They must have been nervous too.....If I had to play drums in front of Neil Peart , or Portnoy, or Steve Smith or any of my heroes, I probably would drop the sticks....Great bunch of guys here and Michael is a great teacher and amazing player
Thank you, I do take note that the students are nervous and try to take that into account. I want everyone to walk away feeling like they learnt something from the lesson. That is my main goal.
Great lesson, Mike. The phrygian fella has a nice sense of melody. It's a great teacher that can take something and show some results to a student in an instant, especially a technique that takes years of practice and dedication. I'm sure this inspired them to go home and practice this. Kudos, Mike.
Thanks man, I'm the phrygian fella 🤘
The world needs more people like Michael.
I love your teaching style. So humble and patient.
Incredible approach and demeanour. Thanks for taking the time end effort putting these on YT. Kudos to the front row too. A+ would watch again.
Great teacher on display here. Awesome advice and awesome techniques to practice.
Glad you find the information helpful, Gabriel!
That was brilliant to watch. Been following you since my first days of playing guitar (2009) and I have to say that you're still my favorite shred/virtuoso guitar player. Took me years to at least nail the A minor sweep arpeggio at 12 fret so hopefully I'm still doing something right yet there's a lot of room to improve. Thanks for inspiration Michael, hope to finally see you someday in Russia (and I know you've visited my country multiple times).
Thank you Michael for teaching all of us. I started watching your videos when I was 10, just starting out, and I aspired to play as well as you. You rock !
Incredible amount of insight on a ten minute clip from an absolute legend. Thanks for sharing your immense knowledge with the masses!
Such an encouraging and utterly likeable guy.
MAB, you're such a class act, wonderful teacher
Thank you!
i was always intimidated by players like MAB back in the 80s/90s but never saw him in a class format. He's so ingratiating with the students, helping and instructing without being negative in any way. MAN i could sit in front of him for hours and learn. I started w Paul Gilbert a few years back and he's the same way. if Michael was ever around here, i'd be there in a second! SUBSCRIBED
My guitar skills have improved drastically and I owe it to you Michael! Thanks.
He really is such a class act. He is so nice and insightful. MAB Rules!!!
Means a lot to me John, thanks!
Michael, you're a great person with extraordinary skill in playing guitar. You're always complimenting everyone and focus on the positive aspect of each person. I, an amateur guitarist, sometimes just try to find weakness in another guitarist. It's a bad habit and you just teach me how to stop it. Thank you.
I have no words... this man pulls out your best of your self!
Such humble guy, excellent lesson. I'm not a shredder but really like MAB talk. U learn so much.
- Hand synch is life.
- Fretboard knowledge: play exercises up and down the neck. (I'm assuming this is the equivalent to what Joe Pass once said, "Play the same lick in all positions.")
- Play fast, no matter if it sounds sloppy. Feel the need for speed... \m/
Thank you so much, Michael Angelo.
Wouldn't you want to play slower to make sure you have it down, rather than play fast and not be as clear?
Your smile and soft voice just warms my heart. And you explain it so calmy it feels like it's not that difficult.
Wow, thank you!
Great teacher. His ability to be vulnerable and connect with his students is a true gift. Much respect.
It's so nice of you to put these lessons here so everybody can watch them for free, thank you very much!
Apart from your musical talent, one thing is to have the knowledge or be an expert in something and another different beast is to be good at transmitting or teaching what you know. You're very good at teaching and that's something not every pro can make.
Thank you, I try to help the student best I can!
It's like a grandpa telling stories to the grandchidren, that's so so cool to watch!
I love how Mike tells you you're doing it wrong by saying you're doing great and have your own technique.
He's the nicest guy ever. I'm learning jazz with him atm.
Dude! I love the fact Michael tells a story about his life, too. It's really nice to hear his happy memories. :)
I never knew he was such a nice guy - really patient and positive instructor.

I will never forget watching Michael on one of his star licks video's back in 1986....one of his secrets was telling his mum he was too sick to go school so he could get more time to practise! That was hilarious Michael !
Star Licks is the first time that type of lesson was ever given. I've been thinking about uploading some segments from it.
