If they would have mastered this tape at 7.5 ips, this would have sounded even better. The instruments by themselves sound great, but combined, you can hear the limitation with all that information squeezed in that space. Don't get me wrong, it sounds really good, and I am surprised that it sounds that good at 3.75 ips. The master recording, I believe was a tape recorded at 15 ips and dubbed down to this test tape. To me, reel to reel tape truly by far surpasses any other audio format. You have a really nice machine. Thank you for posting.

7.5ips is the start of decent quality reels for the most part, even as good for pro.

I believe the audio source for the 3 3/4 ips tape recording was a 33 1/3 rpm test LP on the "Project 3" label. During the cartridge tracking test portion, the stylus can be heard mis-tracking on the 3rd and 4th parts (loudest) of the high frequency tracking test. Also note the part 10 test for "rumble and noise" which would pertain to turntables not tape machines. Enoch Light (whose name appears on the tape's hand written notes) was involved with project 3 recordings, and had produced the earlier "Command" label records and tapes.

Ironically, it seems that your left and right audio channels are reversed in the video...at least they are according to the test recording, which is exactly opposite to what I'm hearing from my own speakers (which, I know for certain are wired correctly).

    Hi,
You did a good job of shooting this, not a lot of bouncing around like many such videos. I am a former radio broadcaster, I played test tapes like that in the 1960s. I am in the process of copying a number of very old radio airchecks to video. As part of that, process, along with other graphics, would you mind if I show a shot from this tape of your Sony recorder running. As the old archival audio of deejays roll, I would like to show a vintage tape recoder....and you did a nice job with it. Please let me know. Thanks.

Do you need an external speaker for this recorder or does it already have one

Even if it did have a built-in speaker, it would be 60 years old. The speakers will not sound good.
