Rusty AIWA AD-6500 Restoration

The AIWA AD-6500 is nice deck from the 70ties. In good condition a true gem, with VU meters, lights and thick solid aluminium front. The one I got has spent some time outside. Its quite rusty, got oxidised buttons and overall looks more like a piece of junk.

Akai GXC-65D Delayed & look at the project stack

I ran into a blocker with the GXC-65D restoration. There are only two ICs in this oldie and one is broken. The ICs are in the pre-amp stage for the left and the right channel. Will left is fine, right remains silent. One of the infamous SANYO LD3141 has failed. Time to go shopping for one!

    I appreciate that this is an old video, but the pinch roller could be 'roughed up' via careful 'sanding' while the roller is in PLAY mode. Clean periodically with IPA or even acetone, although careful with the latter dripping on to some plastics. I used folded grit paper held with forceps, holding it evenly across the roller. It works unless the roller's rubber is 'shot'. Good photography here, very clear.

    It is even more effective if you own a high end turntable with an acrylic platter. I have an older Rega with an English made acrylic platter (heavy by acrylic types). The more the record is pressed against the acrylic (weight), the more effect you receive. The back ground is darker, the bass is more pronounced, and the highs are clearer. You're talking about a $1000 turntable with $125 English made acrylic platter for the Rega. I have taken it off and returned the original platter, but the music is noticeably less detailed. With the platter, the records and platter meld into one, with no ringing.

    It’s the MC cartridge that needs the extra boost for the signal before going into phono stage. The MM just goes into normal phono stage. SL-7 and SL-10 are a technical marvel but hard to fix. The J series are little better/easier to fix but does not have the record clamp.

    Sorry I think this is a self explanatory question but I just wanted to make sure before I buy replacement hinges for the dust cover, I have everything except the clips that hold them on. If I buy replacement hinges do they just slide into the black metal piece on the back of the turntable? Thank you for your help.

    The fit on the spindle will vary from table to table as all are not machined to exactly the same size, but the minute amount of play makes absolutely zero difference in how it performs, its a non-issue. The main benefits of these is to reduce surface resonance of the record and to a lesser degree help with minor warping - I have a few different weights and I decided not to use the heavier ones on my belt drive Harmon Kardon as its a bit harder on the belt, I also have settle mainly on the weight youre using here and for warped records I have a record clamp from record doctor, works like a dream to flatten and dampen the record

    Radio waves also affect the area around the sound head.Since the sound head terminals are visible, you can reduce noise by making and installing a shield cover.

    You can adjust the azimuth with the transport in postition. The bottom strip of the door is removable by pushing tabs inside the door on each side with your finger. There's a diagram showing this in the CT S430S service manual which has the same faceplate

    I have this turntable and it admits a lukewarm feeling on the turntable mat. Once played a Vinyl Record it feels very slightly warm. Is this normal? I have used this player for 5+ years and replayed many of the same vinyl records and it hasn't warped them. Just something I have noticed with this turntable.

    the hiss when not using dolby it only appears when the heads need to be demagnatised for that i have a looking like a cassette from tdk that you play it and as two distinct beeps that changes when the heads are demagnatised, dolby normally decreases the original deck specifications as you can record with louder sound not using dolby ,this in good decks and never had hiss, but if recorded with dolby and played without dolby it increases a lot the hiss level, some car cassette players didn´t had and hiss apeared ,also i discover that some friends that had cheaper decks recorded always with dolby to play without dolby to increase the high´s on the recording but inbetween tracks a high level of hiss was heard but not a problem for them they had their precious high´s increased in their average decks without bias

  • @RUfromthe40s
    @RUfromthe40s 7 месяцев назад

    i had a better deck than this when this model apeared but trade it with a BMW 2002 from 75 ,restored in the 80´s and later bought this model and a md player that was the model under the only ES md deck cost me the same as the one i trade for the car, only notice a plus ,the FLEX function ,i had and have lot´s of well recorded cassettes and with this i put the flex on and the old recordings seemed to recover all their quality almost like nakamichi azimuth correction, that i have all top end decks since 1974 till mid 90´s ,the last is the cassette deck1 that it seems better than all that came before but it´s simple design and size didn´t caught buyers interest, also have some pioneers top end models from late 80´s to early 90´s and in this deck one could notice a decrease in the frequency response but all cassettes sounded like i had just recorded them but with 10 years or a bit less or even some good cassettes from the 70´s.Yamaha as the play trim but is nothing related with flex but pioneer says it´s a similar efect it brings up the high´s that seemed lost on old recordings due to excessive use in difrent cassette players as portable ones, car cassette players and walkman´s, so i ended up buying later on ebay a CT-S630S very cheap but the only with flex ,the ones with upper reference don´t have flex but it´s a very interesting function,when trying it for the first time i couldn´t believe it´s quality in playing cassettes

      OH, and i never use dolby ,since ever ,so having dolby S or not doesn´t make it better,my first tape recorder was a X-165D from Akai 1970 catalog (reel deck)and records perfect today using only ferric tapes ,and not any deck can record with it´s quality ,don´t even known which to refer and i own 47 cassette decks,between mine and my father´s that came to me when he died already a year ago or almost, the reason why i have so many nakamichi´s ,mine and the one´s from my father between other great decks as the B215 from revox and a Teac that is incredible good. also this deck if cassettes aren´t well built or bad calibrated from factory ,this regarding the tape and the casing if demanding extra power from the engine that rolls the tape inside the casing ,in the BLE automatic function it detects the extra strenght made by the engine and to do not put it out of tune it stops and gives the message error ,in the first one i owned it even said, do not use BASF cassettes and they were right i´ve found a lot of problems on basf cassettes bought since last monthes of 1985 and in the 90´s they had good tapes but the cassette itself were badly built and could destroy any new deck,i´ve done that with some 7 basf super II and maxima I, II, IV that had very good sound but after using them i couldn´t calibrate any TDK cassette on a CT-959, this new after being bought, but it last years working only with good basf tapes ,like the ones i refer or UR and MX from maxell or HF from sony or even tdk D , AD, AD-X and AR, the SA and SA-X were impossible to use there without being destroyd as some sony UX-PRO or Metal master, the TDK MA-XG is the standart cassette for this last deck i refer so no need to calibrate only if some like a lot of high´s they could increase the bias knob for the left(this comes in the deck manual)

    I worked as a Panasonic service center in my town for 20 years until Panasonic closed it in the early 2000's. I worked on many of the Technics linear tracking turntables, both belt and direct drive. Two other techs and myself went through factory training on them with a Matsushita tech from Japan in 1981. He was great and showed us the "tricks of the trade." They are not difficult to repair if you have access to service manuals. I still have my SL-DL1 and performed restoration work on it two years ago. When we got a service note from Matsushita in 1992 that they were discontinuing replacement phono cartridges and styli, I purchased two spare cartridges and four spare styli with my employee discount.

    Got one of these machines RS 615 (EU) and immediately upon inspection I noticed the massive capstan wobble... I've never seen a capstan bearing so worn out in any other decks that I've put my hands on. But apart from that the machine still plays nicely when the bearing is tensioned by the pinch roller pushing against it. Just by lubricating the bearing it has become smooth, it was rattling inside the housing before. I can't really stand the sons of a dog that use these machines without even lubricating the capstan bearing. It wasn't supposed to be re-lubed for 1000 hours after it was made, and a service life of 5 years regardless of hours. It's 50 years later you have to LUBE the goddam bearings!
