Sony TC-580 Bi-Lateral Six Head Stereo Tapecorder (1971-74). This is an excellent deck both in sound and build quality. When I got it it lit up but nothing moved. After throughly cleaning off all the old grease and re-lubing it is back in service. The pinch roller is perfectly useable. After cleaning and demagnetizing the tape path, this deck sounds excellent. In my research I found multiple posts of the non-functional auto reverse function and even a review from 1972 with the reviewer have problems with it. The auto-reverse can be switch defeated from the front panel. Just use it as a normal stereo deck. Cheers.

Just acquired one of these on trade. Was in original box, with Sony dust cover. Looks new, but capstan won't actuate. Guess I'll be taking the cover off and getting busy.

Patience. Don't force things. Clean and manually move all mechanisms until they loosen up. You can do it.

Hi, thanks for watching. The sound works fine. I was not connected to a sound system - this video was for functions only.

I hate to ask a dopey question - this video got mine up and running - so thanks !!! BUT....is there a "pause" function on this machine that I am missing? I've never had a deck without a "pause" button - thanks!!!

Hi, thanks for watching - no pause. The manual is here: mikesgig.com/manuals-and-literature

Unfortunate that you couldn't get the bi-directional play working properly. It does look like a really nice R2R. Would have love to see an actual repair video but good video nonetheless.

Hey thanks for watching. Wish I could have done the full repair - maybe later. Comparing it to my Technics 1500 and Tascam 34B I'd say it sits between the two in quality.

Any solution for the reels not moving

Could simply need a thorough clean and relube. When I got this deck it powered up but nothing moved except for the capstan. Take the front panel off and manually move and clean all mechanisms.

How do you change the brakes? I got it open but what do I remove or get to the brakes?

Hi Tony, thanks for watching. Stop at 8:11 and you will see my finger pointing at the brake pad assembly - the white plastic under the reel platter. There is a spring clip to remove from the shaft and the plastic part lifts off. Watch this vid - ruclips.net/video/zvTS_3kVTQc/видео.html

I watched that video but it doesn’t go into detail on how to take the brakes out to replace the pads. I’m new to this.

@@TonyJenkynx Hi again. Once you get that plastic piece off you need to carefully scrape off the old pad with with utility or exacto knife. Then glue on the new pads with contact cement or the like.
