  • In this episode of The Debrief, former 22 SAS Trooper Big Phil Campion speaks to Georgie Smith.
Following a destiny in dance until the last moment, Georgie Smith joined the RAF in a HR role. Having joined to see the world, Georgie did just that, deploying on a Falklands tour & a role change in Afghanistan as a Detention Handler. Upon return from Afghanistan, Georgie noticed small changes with her health, which was eventually diagnosed as Multiple Sclerosis (M.S) in 2015. Having passed Med-boards and classed fit to serve, Georgie returned to work and has continued to fight for the employment rights for other armed forces personnel, and has gone on to bring home 6 x medals at the warrior games.

Brilliant interview and what a brilliant attitude. I can relate to how you felt when you was diagnosed I served for 16 years in the Army and I knew there was something wrong but was not diagnosed with ms until many years later. Everyone says your so strong I am not strong it's the squaddie F£$%^ it attitude that gets me through it.

Georgie some 20+ years ago my Wife and I Ran a Holiday Resort in Queensland, Australia and one day a Lady Guest arrived and I noticed she was having trouble walking so I immediately thought she had a Back problem...but it turned out she had M.S. which at that time I knew nothing about...she started to explain and stopped me when I was about to say I was Sorry to hear about her condition....BUT she looked at me and Said Please Do Not start feeling sorry for me...I stood dumb struck... She then said she knew when diagnosed the stages she would pass though so she for the first time Planned her life around doing the thinks she had never had the courage to do... starting with the thing she feared the most.... Parachuting, then Abseiling, White water rafting, Mountain climbing, Scuba Diving, Aerobatics, Horse riding etc etc. She explained that as her mobility decreased she gradually started the less strenuous activities and while she was with us she wanted to go on a Four wheel Drive to Fraser Island, and all the local attractions.... We were able to organise her trips and not one of the tour operators would let her pay because she gave then so much pleasure with her Positive and Happy attitude.
During another conversation she blew me away when she said when she was diagnosed was the best thing that had happened to her, as she had never been married and lived on her own, had a very well paid job had no social friends and was very selfish....So when she had gathered her thoughts she said I have SINCE done all the activities that I was always afraid of and she had had the best time of her life doing all these things that she never thought possible. Nothing was too much to conquer.for her.
