Grettings, i have shot split finger for 50yrs. ,i had to undergo 2 surgeries to repair my right arm n hand, i never picked up a bow in 4 yrs., truthful, i was kinda scared to try archery again, but ,i couldn't quit i hadta try it, so now i have 2 longbows ,50#'s each, i have been shooting my bows almost everyday , depending on the weather, but was stuck in a rut, till i watched this video, now you would never believe the accuracy that developed, plus i now shoot 3 fingers under for the first time in 50yrs. and it friggin works, thx so much for the info, shakyjake out.
As a older 77 yr old here trying to shoot barebow and having to switch to left hand because I lost sight in my right dominate eye. I really appreciate your help on here . I think your approach on this is pretty much right on. Even though I have shot many years recurve and compound and going back to recurve in my final days you have a really good approach and show us all things we may not be thinking about to improve our groups. Thanks again for what you do.
It definitely helps at short to mid ranges. At longer ranges the arrow will cover the target for me. I have changed my anchor point to my cheekbone after seeing your video that mentioned letting your draw determine your anchor point not your anchor point determine your draw. You mentioned Arne Moe also teaches this method. I have found this to be very helpful. It lengthened my draw and made my back mussels become more involved which has given me a better release and lessened misses to the right or left. Thanks for the info.
As previously mentioned in your previous video it's about finding the proper anchor "for oneself" that leads to correct back tension. And the way you showed it in this video (3under and middle finger to the corner of the mouth) is exactly the form I'm curently using since the last two mounths. So far it's working good for me. I have developed a better consistency in my shots doing this and for the moment I am really happy with the results.
This is game changing! By putting the arrow closer to my eyes (in my case, I anchored my draw with my ring finger to the corner of my mouth), I have been shooting gold in 10 meters and ramped up accuracy for about 80% (6 shots/round for 17 rounds, hitting 82 arrows by the gold out of 102 shots). Fantastic! Thanks Greg!
I actually started trying this about 2 weeks ago, because I’ve been curious about your high anchor. It’s a little strange at first, but man does it work! Now with a cheek bone anchor I’m forced to move my head more in line with my bow arm too. Lines me up perfectly and I can tell a difference already with my groups!
Thanks Greg another great vid there mate.........have recently changed to 3 under with index finger at the corner of the mouth and the first knuckle of the thumb at the jaw line just below the ear.........this gives me a full feel of my back tension. All the best mate, best wishes from DownUnder.
As I mentioned, yesterday, I did try this, seemed to work some, but really maybe my release is already pretty good, and tension in hand is minor, but I'll continue to try it. Thanks for the video
Just subscribed. I've only seen 3 fingers under the arrow used for beginners to reduce the odds of missing the target. I started off as a target archer in 1988, always used split fingers anchored under the chin as a sight was used in the early years..... we were taught this was the ONLY way !!! When competition and ever increasing spending on 'aids' became an issue I moved over to English longbow and hunter recurve which I found an enjoyable challenge to master without help as I was the only non sight user in a club with no instruction, hunter recurves and compounds were even frowned upon. I had to learn from books and practice...all the time sticking with split fingers. After an 8 year break from archery I caught the bug again a few weeks ago, came across your videos and realised I've been missing out. I'm going to try 3 fingers under the arrow with a cheek anchor to see if it makes a difference. We may think we know all there is to know and it's easy to trash other's ideas out of hand. I've never done this, always believing there's someone somewhere with more wisdom. You make a comment about your tab getting in the way.....what do you think to the silicone rollers that fit on the string instead of using a tab ? Having measured and marked the centre of the string on my Border Archery hunter recurve, split fingers are approximately 2 inches above the mark whereas 3 fingers under the arrow places the drawing area dead on, thus placing an even weight on each limb. Please excuse the weird spelling of certain words, I'm English :-)
One of the biggest things for me was this; for a long time I emphasized a loose grip on the bow hand. Everyone: "don't squeeze the grip, don't squeeze the grip". I struggled for a long time with inconsistency, horrible in fact. Finally, I ignore all of it, put a firm grip on the bow and boom, I am shooting great. So my "expert" advice is to squeeze the grip!
Great tip! I shoot horse bow drawing back closer to my ear, but I can't wait to try this! When speed shooting is the thing, and from a horse, bringing everything to the shot is very difficult.
Thanks Greg! Excellent suggestion...I will try it asap. My buddy in 1964 always anchored at his 'ear' which I thought was strange. But, he could shoot remarkably well. We both shot trad only. bill b.
Trying your higher anchor ⚓️ up on the cheek, boy it’s tough to get used to but l’m determined to make it work 🤓 I use the elastic band you advocate (with my eyes closed) at work and when l can’t draw my bow to feel my back and to eliminate inputs from my eyes.
Interesting. I moved my anchor from the corner of my mouth to under my chin; basically cupping the chin between the thumb and index finger. My shooting improved tremendously. Your method makes sense, especially with the laser analogy. WTH, I'll give it a try and see how it goes.
Thanks again for another great vid. You talked about not having good archery coaches in your area. I have former high level archery people in mine-they are very reticent. I’m a member of a very small club (36 member) that has a pretty good 3D course. I don’t do any 3D shooting yet-not much anyway. I’m on the target range shooting Jeff Kavanagh’s vertical line and working on my form (l wanna get that down so that my release and second anchor point are in my muscle memory). You and Jeff (you mentioned him in a previous vid) are my coaches. And l thank you heartily Greg from the bottom of my heart 💙
Agree completely, but, I wear glasses. So I draw 3 under with my index finger in the corner of my mouth. That’s about as close as I can get without crashing into my specs. I used to shoot compound with fingers and I was able to use my middle finger because of the more acute string angle, but with my longbow this doesn’t work. As a gap shooter this doesn’t cause me a lot of problems, as long as my release is clean. Cheers! Love your work!
Great ideas. My problem is I wear glasses and they often bump the string and when that happens my vision will shift a bit and as such my arrow goes off my instinctual aim point as much as 8". Still haven't come up with a way to deal with it.
I need them too. I just won't wear them. At indoor shoots, the X is not there. There is a bluish blur, but I cannot see it. Was wondering if the "athletic" frames that wrap around you head might work. I'm also thinking of contacts just for indoor shooting.
@@TradArchery101 good idea on sport glasses, I believe they make archery glasses -- think I’ll talk to my optometrist. I wore contacts for most of my life, but as I got older I started needing bifocals and bifocal contacts are terrible! That and as we get older our eyes get dryer, another problem for contacts. I recently spent the last 3 weeks trying to split finger and that made glasses even worse, literally grabbing the corner of my glasses now and then and flinging them off.... back to 3 under today.

I havent been shooting long but i went from shooting split finger and anchor by mouth to 3 under anchoring on my cheek bone and seem to shoot better. I am using a cheap pvc bow i made so who knows how mucj better it would be with a real bow.
Thanks Greg, enjoy your many videos. My situation. I shoot three under and where eye glasses. I pretty much have my Gaps figured out, but frequently shoot left of center. I contribute this to not getting my arrow directly under my eye. Is there a "term" for a horizontal Gap. I contribute this to a horizontal parallax effect while aiming my arrow.
Hello again Greg. Another question you might be able to help me with. In 1981 I got my first recurve , a Ben Pearson Take down with aluminium raiser. I`ve been serching online for old Ben Pearson catalogs from 1980-1984 but can`t find any past 1976 or so ?? Have you got some link`s I might try ? P.s. I just bought my first Trad. bow and I find you videos very helpful. Thank you so much for all the time and effort.
I'm having a hard time to shoot with my glasses on. This problem increases when I choose anchor points that raise the back of the bow towards my eye. Canting the bow helps somewhat but it's difficult to relax the bow are when canting. Trying out different stuff, but no solution really works well... :/

Im shooting onepiece trad. recurve LH GaP now, was shooting Longbow before, but after i changed to recurve my GaP have changed a lot my GaP at 18 Meters is almost 28 in. any idea on how to get the GaP less?
basically getting the arrow closer to your eye will reduce the gap for smaller distances. so like Greg said, either switching to 3-under or raising your anchor point (or both) will reduce your gap distance.
To me, shooting instinctive 3 under, its all fun and rainbows until the distance is over 30 or 40 meters... Its impossible to me with an arrow high up near the eye
I understand that you may not be use to that. For me, my extensive background in shooting iron sights on rifles, and using "Kentucky Windage" really helped me.
