THE WEIRDEST PLANE in the world? PIAGGIO P180 with PROPELLERS at the REAR END

- The Piaggio P180 Avanti is one of the weirdest planes I have ever seen and I love it. It kinda looks like a small dolphin. As far as I know it` s the only plane which carries its propellers at the back of the plane. The Piaggio arrived at Essen/Mülheim from the United Kingdom to operate a charter flight to Sylt. Also check out the registration which starts with a "2" which stands for Isle of Man. Mainly VIP planes und business airplanes are registered on the Isle of man which is usually caused by lower taxes on the island.
I also included a few other planes I filmed at Essen in 2020 including a Dornier DO228 of Arcus Air and a Dornier DO328 of Rhein Neckar Air / Private wings. The Blimp which is visible in this video is based at Essen Mülheim. The owner is WDL which is a traditional aviation company in western germany. I always enjoy watching the blimp.
Thanks for watching, I hope you enjoyed watching these airplanes which don` t show up very often on my channel.
I was a demonstration pilot for the Piaggio P180 here in the USA. It is a joy to fly and rivals the speed of smaller corporate jet aircraft. The cabin is large and very comfortable with low noise levels!
It needs that cabin because it makes a lot of noise. One of this was making landink,take-off training in my city for a few days...it was driving me crazy by the noise of overspeeded propellers.Yes it had almost the speed of a jet but the noise was twicer or bigger. After all Piaggio is a brand for scooters.
How fast does the Piaggio 180 aircraft cruise at?
@@F50Aircraft
The Piaggio 180 (Avanti) cruises at 370 Knots (425 MPH) at 37,000 feet (FL370) ! The fuel burn at this altitude is about 120 gallons per hour (GPH)
which is less than a small corporate jet uses!
@@piaggio780 im sure i read somewhere that the aircraft could do 400 knots (true air speed).
@@F50Aircraft
You are correct… The Avanti II was replaced by the Piaggio EVO, the EVO maximum speed is 400 Knots TAS with updated P&W PT6 engines and five blade scimitar propellers.
Unfortunately only a handful of the Evo‘s were delivered to customers before Paggio Aero went into receivership.
I had the privilege to fly on a Piaggio a few years back and found it to be very quiet as the engines were aft of the main fuselage towards the back of the plane.
Takeoff felt to me to be very, very short and my most lingering memory was that of a surprisingly large (very wide, high ceiling for a business type aircraft) comfortable aircraft.
Flight time was similar to that of a jet for the trip I was on.
I saw one of those on the ramp at the airport I used to fly out of. Got to chatting with the pilots. It's a really cool design. Putting the props at the rear lets you move the thrust centerlines closer together, reducing the asymmetric thrust problem with an engine failure. It also makes the cabin quieter since the noise is behind you. The front wing provides some lift, letting you move the main wing even further back, so the wing spar doesn't go through the cabin. It's really an amazing airplane.
One of the most beautiful planes in the world.... great video. It looks like it belongs under water. I hope a developer creates this for MSFS.
Near turbofan speeds, fraction of the fuel burn.
It's nice to see such an active airport, especially with the crises were going through.
Kkkkkklltrlpppt
This is an extremely clever design of aircraft, amongst its many benefits is that of giving jet performance and range without jet costs!
This is the fixed wing aircraft which I would like to fly and own over all others!
I had a toy model of this plane when I was 8, I actually thought it was a sci-fi spaceship or something... I had no idea that it was a model of a real plane!
LOL
Cool. I’ll have to look for one if those.
Wrong plane that’s a beechraft this is an Italian plane
There are many "pusher" type aircraft. Google search for results. With the canards along the front, this Piaggio looks like a flying catfish. Interesting posting. Thanks.
I was JUST getting ready to post the exact same thing! I saw it and t
Immediately thought catfish! 🤣🤣🤣 it looks just like one!
Wow some amazing propeller catches. The ATR all black color rocks....big change from the usual white liveries...👍✅
The Piaggio is the most aerodynamically efficient aircraft in its class.
Very low fuel consumption.
Was at there manufacturing plant many times, Piaggio said it was the only machine certified for T.O. landing while sitting on the commode, had a seat belt to keep you in place.
Fastest turboprop. Most cabin space in class. Efficient to operate. The Avanti is a genius design. That is not the weirdest design; the Avanti is beautiful.
Never forget s this the plane we get in xplane 9 memories 😍
Very comfortable, excellent to fly and very fast. Not weird at all.
I really think that it is a beauty.
Another plane similar to this configuration is the Beechcraft Starship. I think the Piaggio Avanti looks much better and the Italians sure knows how to design beautiful looking planes!
Actually, Americans had a lot to do with the design of the Piaggio. Professor Jan Roskam from the University of Kansas along with Professor Gerald Gregorek at Ohio State University and Gates Learjet we’re very involved, but the patent was by an Italian so they certainly get the credit.
Ive seen a few P180s out of the local airport (Philadelphia) but still a rare sight. While these have a unique design theyre absolute rockets. Its always fun watching something that looks like it shouldnt be able to fly go zooming over your head! Thanks for sharing, I miss seeing these!
Smart design - probably has more cabin room than any other in its class
You have the point
yep
Nothing to do with cabin space but fuel efficiency and noise levels.
#¢
@@camman301 Actually it is the fuel efficiency, the speed and the comfort. When a designer can achieve ALL of these in one design, this is genius. Especially since fuel efficiency is normally the inverse of speed and comfort, so this design is super genius!
I live under one of the appoach paths to Paris Le Bourget airport (the most important airport in Europe for business planes), and I have often seen such Piaggio Avanti planes, they are easy to spot due to their unusual shape and particular noise (rather loud).
The Convair B-36 "Peacemaker", which first flew in 1946 and of which 384 were built also had rear propeller wing mounted engines.
The Avanti was one of those rare aircraft that had the PT6 the right way 'round - sucking at the front and blowing at the back. The Beechcraft Starship was another. I got to look over an Avanti one day at the P&WC service centre at YHU back many years.
That first plane is very unusual. A matter of fact there is more than one plane in this video that is unusual to me. Great plane spotting Cargospotter.
I LOVE it! What a beautiful design and an amazing piece of engineering!
The Beechcraft 2000 "Starship" also uses two PT-6 turboprops in a pusher configuration. However the Starship was a failure, compared to the Avanti. Most Starships were scrapped, when Beechraft rain into financial difficulties, and couldn't perform service on the aircraft. We have an Avanti service base in Denton, just north of Dallas, and I see them flying all the time out of Addison airport. You can tell by the sound, when one is coming over. Way different from a King Air, even though they have the same engines.
Cargospotter, hello, some years ago I was fortunate to get a ride from KTEB. ( Teterboro NJ ) to KFLE ( Fort Lauderdale EXEC ), on a PIAGIO, ITS QUIET INSIDE & near jet speed but $ less to operate, the engines are mounted BEHIND THE CABIN , & the props do NOT need driving, as the exhaust gasses go through the props, which is. The noise externally of the aircraft 5 hrs later returned to NJ , cheers 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
It's wierd AND awesome!
Design so nice
Nog nooit gezien deze vliegtuigen prachtig .mooi om te zien
I see these flying pretty regularly where I live, definitely an interesting plane!
Where are you living...?
@@HabibKhan-dc5qv there are about 5 of these at the St.Pete-Clearwater airport in Florida.
Thanks.
Reminds me of a catfish hehe!
I thought exactly the same thing :)
Flying Catfish!
@Plane guy 787 Yep looks like lil catfish whiskers. The shape of the body of the plane makes me think of fish too haha
Was just thinking that
True
Kinda looks like a chubby Seal with whiskers ;) But the weirdest looking plane has to be the Super Guppy
😂😂😂😂
I agree BIG TIME, at least with the super guppy :D btw, piaggio has something to do with Ferrari Automotive but idk what it is. all I see are Piaggio’s plane ads with a Ferrari in front of the plane.
if you look at the front of the Super Guppy it looks like an Alien. lol
But it looks kinda cute
@@kenshumba6454 l I mOo hg. Great aerop lNe
Der Sound und das aussehen der avanti is so geil.
The registration 😂👌🏼
But yeah it does look weird. I seen one before
The registration is simply “too easy”
I see what u did there
I wouldn´t be surprised if that Piaggio flies in reverse too.
Funny registration on the piaggio , it’s saying that flying is too easy😂
Great to see some smaller and more uncommon aircraft from you! :)
it may look weird ....but it is one fast turbo prop. Caribbean Greetings and Happy New Year :) !!!!
Sister airline to Air Alsie, Alsie Express is owned by Sandma Holding A/S. It operates non-stop flights between Sønderborg and Copenhagen Airport (CPH)
The world needs more blimp travel.
The Japanese Army had nominated this aircraft as a candidate.
But they chose Beechcraft 1900.
Because they know they can get spareparts for the Beechcraft and not for the Piaggio...
@@jesper1406
And Beechcraft got the Mitsubishi Diamond-2 before that.
Very nice and lovely airplane
Very nice 👍
It's also the only aircraft with 3 lifting surfaces 😍
Please what do you mean by 3lifting surfaces?
@@davidokpon4834 The tail is also a lifting surface. In most aircraft the tail pushes downward to balance the tendency for the nose to dive downwards. But since the Piaggio has a small wing at the front which is also lifting, the tail can be used to lift as well. Also the shape of the fuselage generates about 15-20% of the lift, so when you add the lift of the main wing, I think this should be called 4 lifting surfaces, although only the 3 wings are controllable lifting surfaces. It is also virtually impossible to stall since the front wing stalls first causing it to drop and prevent the main wing from stalling.
I like it! :) I wonder how it would look like in military livery.
Wau apik lan keren pesawate, pabrik vespa jebule nggawe motor mabur ugo, mantap wis, josss !!!
That blimp took off at a steep incline!
Better than nothing!!!
It doesn’t need to join huge aircrafts. It’s kinda of cool birds!!!
This plane. Every time I see it on my Plane Finder app flying over my house it's always bloody cloudy.
Wow I love the Piaggio plane
Piaggio is indeed the cutest
These little are super cool planes, I've caught a couple and they're outrageous to see in real life! Great footage man, I like the registration at 0:45 :)
Two-EASY, LOL, I've seen a lot of funny/interesting registrations, but that one got me laughing!
@@himmelssturmermcfly463 Have you seen the German registered one D-IPPY? According to some (not me!) there should be an American registered one also: N-0ISY!
Been around a few of these P180 before always wondered about the fact that the propeller is located right behind the exhaust pipes
Keeps the props from icing without any additional system. Very smart. And the heat is not a problem as the blades are cooling themselves by moving through the air any time the turbines are at a temperature that could cause damage.
Nice video!
I *LOVE* this plane. So much brio!!!
It's a pusher aircraft. Historically not as fast as forward facing prop plane. But with canards I bet she handles pretty well. Looks cool. If I had that kind of change to just blow I'd get one in all black.
One of the fastest turboprop aircraft in the world
There has been a very nice recently repainted all flat black one for sale in Horseshoe Bay, TX. Great interior, too! Asking $2.35 million. Look for it at controller dot com or google Piaggio Avanti for sale. By the way, this aircraft holds the production twin turboprop record for a transcontinental trip by a large margin. Nothing else even close. And the previous record had been set by Chuck Yeager in a Cheyenne, so yeah, the Piaggio Avanti is fast by design. 402 kts max from the factory, though the one setting the record averaged 475 kts! That’s 546 mph, San Diego, CA to Charleston, SC in under 3:52 hrs. Probably had it stripped and loaded with extra gas tanks, engines highly tuned of course, and waited for the right jet stream conditions, but Yeager would’ve done the same.
Airborne Catfish. It's a beautiful design.
The last time I saw a shape like that it was dripping off the end of a kid's nose... 🤣
I love the fact that blimps or dirigibles don't stall!
Aviation art. Entire video. 😀
Cool, I really love the P180 as you can see my logo is a P180
Sieht schon komisch aus, ist mal was anderes. Das Luftschiff war aber auch klasse! Daumen hoch! Gruss inselvideo!
@Hector Cayson Will you stop spamming your bot accounts everywhere?
And how stupid do you think people are that they'll believe this?
Get a job.
As others have said, there are other pusher-type small prop aircraft. The P180 isn't even the only pusher business prop: the Beechcraft Starship, while massively less common, is probably the most famous example.
Звук особенный у этого Пьяджио. Ни с чем не перепутаешь раз услышав.
lets paint our planes white to absorve less heat
alsie express: no
🤣🤣
And go mach 3 cause we are so important
Yes, flat black seems like a burden on the air conditioning system unless you fly to places where it is always cold.
One of the RCMP top brass was an Italian, had to have one as his private transport. Leather interior.
A little bit weird, but definitely not the weirdest. Check out the Rutan Boomerang for a weird aircraft!
Never heard of the Rutan Boomerang before, just searched it on the internet. But I kinda like planes with two fuselages.
Also, check out the Rutan Voyager or the Gytoflug SC01 Speed-Canard.
For some reason, RUclips doesn't want me to write that in the previous reply, but when I saw the HB-21 and the HB-23 for the first time, that looked pretty crazy too.
Cape Air originally had looked at this aircraft to replace their aging Cessna 410's but decided to go with Tecnam P-2012's
So the choice was between two planes designed and built in Italy. Tecnam, over 5500 aircraft built and sold worldwide.
Like someone said, it’s not weird as the 3rd plane, looks like an albatross bird, the plane is awesome…just perfect, that’s a real sweet grab free plane.
Looks like something designed by Burt Rutan.
The 1st airplane looks like a catfish design.. 😂😂😂 lmao
A so cute plane, it likes a catfish!
Our airport is the home base of a P180. I can always tell when it passes, just by the loud noise it makes.
Much more noise than other twins. I don't know why that is though.
Its beautiful! I love it
The Piaggio P180 is a fantastic plane, really fuel-efficient and very fast. Caught one of those in Madeira in 2019, amazing aircraft!
Having worked as a flight ramp technician for many years I serviced plenty of these aircraft I can say it does have a sound all its own and it gives jet speed at a turboprop cost and the interior is actually quite roomy the only drawback for the Piaggio was it refueled quite slowly even with the single point refueling . I loved watching them takeoff and land for many years it truly is a unique aircraft like the Beechcraft Starship which also had the props behind the wings .
This is a Piaggio P180, not P160...
What do u expect...and with google to help.
@aggelosfr49
Certainly a typo 🙂✌️
typo, I changed it. I was just testing if you guys would find the mistake ;)))
@@Cargospotter You forgot to change it in the description also.
@@Cargospotter lmaaaao
That registration tho!
2:03 Bad Boys For Life =))))
Nice video mate
2-EASY...BRILLIANT!!!
sound engine of Piaggio P180 Avianti is so awesome...
canard design with pusher propellers.
Fun fact - the very first aircraft, wright flyer was a canard too (with pusher propellers). So nothing abnormal.
Apparently it is not actually a canard because it lacks control surfaces (it’s flaps don’t count) like the Wright Flyer had. But still a great point! Those Wright Bros. were really smart guys. And they made 2 wheeled vehicles (bikes) just as Piaggio does (Vespa scooters). Great minds must think alike, just like me and anyone who claims to have said that first!
I think the props behind the wing makes sense.
The design is weird very weird but i kinda like it
The first one was really weird and I'd love to travel in it 😅
beautiful !
People at the drive-thru have to listen to that during a movie?? lol!
Piaggio has several previous push prop twins, so not that new.
Awesome aircraft with a unique sound BUT incredibly noisy. 😅 Even when it's around 30km away while being in flight level during cruise you can hear it quite good 😁
Bellissimo aereo concentra tutto il bello che l'Italia rappresenta.
It kinda looks like Derek's creation from ptfs lmao
Nice VDO
I've spot some of them lately. Those are great to see and hear 😎Nice footage 👍
I’m all for unique aircraft. It has a really cool profile, looks kinda like a catfish haha 🐟
Where I live in the City of Tulsa at the RL Jones airport you can see lots of tuxedo air P180s. These planes are very common in Tulsa.
Still can’t believe all black painting makes the plane heavier.🤔
I used to see P-180 flying from Dhaka airport every morning. But the owner company named Arirang Ceased their operations here because of the economic crisis resulted from the pandemic.
Gostei magnífico
An interesting variety of aircraft here. The airport itself is also interesting as it has a blimp hanger and not far away a drive-in movie theater.
Yes, the drive-in was the best thing in this video other than the Piaggio. I wish we still had a drive-in where I live. Sigh.
@@HQBergeron Hopefully someone in your part of the country will bring that drive-in back!
Hey, I just read that the new LoCo Drive-in in Loudon, TN is the first drive-in to use a screen with LED lights. They can start the movie before sundown.
@@danstevenson6612 Thank you! Too bad Oregon is so far from Tennessee. But that sounds very cool indeed!
