How DMs see Artificers - DnD 5e

- My current campaign started with two artificers. And to be fair, I actually think artificers are super cool but everyone knows once they were released for 5e... Dungeons and Dragons was never the same.

Free bag of holding anyone
Better yet, two bags of holding (One per artificer, to save a little in Infusion Slots) and you can have one Arrowhead of total Destruction daily.
Congratulations, you can cheese the hardest enemy of every combat XD.
Honestly... When I play an Artificer the next time, I will team up with a Warlock or Bard and sell in every town a bag of holding which strangely doesn't work anymore, as soon as I leave town.
As a dm, my answer to this is a monster called the bagman. Use bags of holding with caution
@@jackwriter1908 bet the DM gonna send an angry mob after you for your charlatan shenanigans😅
My dm banned me from getting one 😂
Artificers, where the only limit is the DM's patience
That is actually an amazing tagline.
I genuinely banned the Artificer at my table,
Now I use 3 Homebrew classes that were initially rejected because Artificer sounded more fun.
So my sincere congratulations to the DMs that did manage to keep the Artificer as an option,
I do not envy you, cuz these other classes are even cooler.
@@BramLastnameHey, would you mind sharing the name of those classes? I'm a new DM playing with new players and we're only using the basic classes for now, so I haven't had an artificer at my table yet, but I'm willing to give 'em a chance when one of my players eventually decides to play as one. But in case I change my mind after 1 campaign with them, I'd probably be interested in those homebrew classes lol
@@Kutomi1 sure thing,
It should all be publicly available,
But if you struggle to find them don't hesitate to ask.
First is the Alchemist by Mage Hand Press,
This one is mostly about making bombs and in general is not as much focused on tech and guns as the other two, which is what gives it its unique roll at our table.
The other two are the Machinist and Gunbreaker from Silent Soren's FFXIV 5e supplement,
The Machinist is more about building gadgets and using special gunslinger techniques.
While the Gunbreaker is flavoured around making and using weapons that are also a gun.
All of these classes are martials, as that's generally how people imagine inventor type characters to be,
So if you want more intelligence based casters you might want to look elsewhere.
@@BramLastname if you think banning a class at your table is the best option because it got out of hand somehow, then you are doing something wrong as a DM. you forget that you are the DM, the literal GOD at the table. you have the power to reward or punish players. a player gets too powerful? well there are several things you can do. Make the other players more powerful by giving them more stuff to balance the levels of power in the party. players doing unexpected wonky stuff? come up with creative, but interesting consequences to their actions.
seriously, i could list so many tips. A good DM knows how to integrate their players into their world, embrace their character ideas and balance everything accordingly. banning a class not only takes away fun, but just shows u are a very restrictive and not creative DM.
Ah the DM will punch me in the face? Good luck with my Armor full plate armor that allows me to fly, breath underwater, be super strong, store anything I want in a pocket dimension, Have Iron Man guntlets, and make me coffee in the morning.
Honestly, fair.
Dont forget about inventions

Our party’s tinkerer artificer and I (a monster slayer ranger) have made it our mission to create the closest approximation to a bow and arrow Barrett.50cal in dnd. I can’t wait to see the expression on the DM’s face when we start sniping tool bags from 600ft away.
Can confirm. Whenever I roll a warforged artificer, the DM shoots me with a 4 gauge.
A Warforged Artificer is just Iron Man or Ultron at that point lmao
@@Buzzkilljoy1248
I oft play Trazyn from 40k, lmao.

*_"I GOT 57 MORE GODDAMN ROUNDS IN THIS 4-ROUND MAGAZINE🗿🚬"_*
I fell in love with Artificers the moment i took my eyes on it. I know what class i am going to play.
I had the exact opposite reaction,
I liked the flavour, but hated how it was designed,
So now there's 4 different scientist-related homebrew classes l allow at my table in the hopes the DMs in my circles also give them a try.
@@BramLastnameAgreed, the DnD artificer screams "DnD game designers are now weebs who wanna make a perfect class that does everything." You can usually expect any game in its end years to have some class like this eventually get implemented. They should've just made a crafting system that does this stuff instead of making it a class. Artificer seems more like an NPC profession, like an armor vendor or potion salesman then an actual hero warrior
@@swickens930Yeah, the infusion system is arguably too powerful for a game that expects magic items to be rare, and while the class as a whole is surprisingly balanced and fun, the infusions do present problems here due to Replicate Magic Item being so good.
It's not a horrible class, that would go to Wizard or Bard, but man does the infusion system break the assumptions of the game.
Once on a d&d session I was playing artificer, and my cannon just crited a attack roll against a bandid, and it dealt double the max health of the bandid... the dm said that the bandid was desintegrated
I am an artificer main
I have a full on armorer, am plannin’ for a armorer-fiend warlock and in another campaign I am a homebrew that gives me a mech
A MECH!?
@@BibbiCodex yeah, it’s the mothorist subclass
It gives you a customizable vehicle so you could flavor it to be a mech
@@Hk-ox4bb Oh wow, that sounds super cool
I'm currently using a homebrew artificer subclass called autoist

Engineers playing artificer: So I made schematics for this thing I wanna build, if it works like I think it should be able to destroy city in one shot
With a bit of creativity and following the RAW you can make a world destroying bomb pretty easily. Turns out magic is a very very big hammer.
Look up the arrow with portable hold and bag of holding. Enough said.
@@spartanonxy how
@@googloocraft1217 Well RAW adamantine cannot be destroyed by none magic means once forged. So adamantine ball constantly filling with water from create destroy water. As one thing DND does not do is it does not define open container. So since the ball would be what would get enchanted from its perspective it should be a open container. In pretty short order you will start getting fusion even if you can only do so once per day. So you now have a fusion ball thing is it CANNOT by RAW be destroyed by the process. And since it is doing so purely from pressure it will not stop till it exhausts its fuel as the process of fusion is releasing energy that then increases pressure via heating the water causing more fusion which in turn more pressure over and over again. You now have a runaway with the right design continuous fusion detonation.
Nothing in that breaks RAW but NO DM would ever allow it. As the ball itself is the source of the spell it should from its perspective be a open container. And once the ball exhausts its fuel just send a warforged or a golem to pick it up once it is cooled down enough and start at next location.
If you can think of anything I missed in RAW that would prevent this I would love to hear it so I can refine the work.
@@spartanonxy what would you do with a ball of pressure? You cant use it as a weapon since its not define by dnd. At mots it would be considered a improvised that do 1d4 damage.
So close to playing an Artificer deep in the Ninth Layer of Ba’ator where my party and I have to escape and we’re all max level starting out BUT we lose levels as we ascend because Asmodeus was our patron.
“We’re fucked, what are we gonna do?”
*Ominous thud behind them*
“I am heavy weapons guy, and this…is my weapon”
“Hey, ya stupid, walking steam shovel! Get a load o’ this!”

TF2 Medic
Torbjorn
Jimmy Neutron and Goddard
AND LITERAL MASTER CHIEF
Don’t forget iron man
Can't help but think that the alchemist archetype is out of place, but that could be from all the time I've played pathfinder alchemist.
Also Nova from starcraft stealth suit
I always thought of Dr. House as an artificer, the cane and the pills resemble a prosthetic and potions respectively
Dexter and Mandark
Honestly, there’s an Artificer player in the D&D campaign I run who is gradually upgrading her steel defender into an Iron Man suit. I’m not kidding. And as a frequent Artificer player myself, I’m so proud.
How is he doing this ? I tough the only way to get a suit was armorer
“I am become death, destroyer of worlds” - An Artificer
When I first clicked on this my screen started glitching. The sheer gigachad of artificers made my video freak out
Seeing this reminded me of the time I played as an artificer and the dm hated so much the fact that I could use infusions on anything I wanted that he banned me from using it on guns claiming that "I didn't know how to make them myself so I couldn't infuse them" so I made my own freaking guns only for the campaign to end sortly afterwards
Joined a group using pre-mades a few years ago. The DM gave me this class, and it was glorious. I made him into a chaotic good arms dealer. Made a medieval version of the Mark L Iron Man Armor, because of obvious reasons.
Video: Your DM will punch you in the face
Me, where artificers in my campaigns have made quantum explosive rounds and multiplanar train systems: ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED, MY PLAYERS?!
This might be the best dnd video I've seen on this side of the internet.
I think we can all agree, making stuff the DM later realises is busted, because he thought we'd use it for something diffrent, is an amazing feeling.
Hello, my Artificer that used Bloodborn style weaponry and adaptive armor, with a close range boom stick and a steel defender.
You're one of those who actually gets punched in the face lol.
@@impishlyit9780 enjoy the reaction cast mage armor, the disadvantage from the defender itself, hybrid chain and plate armor, and the following turn around 70 points of damage to you face.
Yeah, i don't think i'm getting hit...at all.
As a DM and a Artificer Player people tend to forget the power in the class isn't actually the cool abilities you get. It's messing around with the base abilities that are druid craft equivalent. You can tell when player has zero imagination when they have NO IDEA how to use these... because you can really mess around with them and make characters interesting with them. (Personal favourite is an Artificer who walks around with their own heroic theme song as a distraction... but you can get more creative than that with a free ablity)
Let's be real, as an Artificer, you're not giving any of your infused items to your party. You're keeping them for yourself, you greedy little boy.
nah, give the wizard mind sharpener so he wont drop forcecage come hell or high water. give the barbarian or paladin flight. give the rogue a cloak of elvenkin to make him so stealthy they barely even exist in the material plane.
That protection cannon tho is better then any healer.
Artificers are like honey badgers they just don't care
Party fight the BBEG and the artificer rolls up in a freaking Gundam
artificers are my favorite class for the chaos they can create alone and i dm :) my campaigns are strait wacky nonsense and its epic
Heh. I wish. I know two artificer players and they have no idea how to play them lol
They have good concepts for their players, but both forgot about the fact that infusions are a thing, so I had to remind them because they were going to battle without any plans or preparations
Not cool.
The biggest mistake someone ever had the misfortune of doing while dming for me was allowing me to make a simple machine on a repeating crossbow I made that amplified the recoil a bit. I used that and showed the dm the basic schematics for a bump stock and how i could build it with my materials. That artificer became a god, metaphorically and literally
Artificers, where the Geneva convention is a checklist
My dm is letting me build warforged and f******** flying battleships
I love playing as a Artificer.
Good thing I'm an armorer, they can easily take a punch to the face
I mean, they got an iron man helmet...
Dispenser goin’ up!
Sentry goin’ up!
(Also, Artificers can make endless alchemy jugs, which is a prospect I know would terrify some seasoned DMs)
Im imagining twin BBEGs, one an eccentric artificer and the other a divination wizard. One makes and modifies lackies to ruin your parties plans while the other is a constant thorn, tugging on strings of fate and surveying the party's every step using some macguffin or high level divination magic. Together, they want to conquer the world as they are both just psychopaths feeding off of each others psychopathy.
Imagine an artificer teamed up with a rouge. Magic and metal, mischief and mayhem. The perfect duo to get the DM to start sending death threats if you go too far.
Great seeing this literally the day after my first session with my new artificer character.
As a GM, I like when someone plays an Artificer because it means they're going into a heavy support role. Any thoughts of grandeur or of being a perfectly designed hunk of armor or damage are quickly humbled after a few combat encounters with me.
Also it's fun to observe the strange phenomena of every Artificer forgetting they have Flash of Genius.
Jokes on the DM, I'll just throw grenades at any enemy
my favourite thing to do is rather than magic gun I have a literal 4 gauge shotgun
Can confirm the face tanking. Had an encounter where I was entangled nearly the whole time. Started with 47 HP and after multiple Thunderwaves, I ended with 45 HP.
Bears, lots of dire bears. The only way!
- by me, a DM
Then Rune Knight sits in the corner solemnly
The DM after I make one self replicating nanite knowing.
LOL i played a goblin tailor themed battle smith. my Steal defender was an animate set of clothes shaped like an owl bear, so i could ride it
As a DM and somebody who makes strong builds when I get bored, Artificer is a really good support... that's about it
It can only make so many items, most of which are basic, and as much as people get bags of holding to make bombs, they can only make one at a time RAW (possibly RAI too for the stated reason prior)
However, they are dam good at their support, usually being considered a good defense or healing class, even working as an okay buff class (not so much a debuff, that's still really a think that bards and warlocks are good with among others)
Over all for player VS DM levels of who gets hit harder, 6/10, it's never gonna outpace unless you play a game without magic items entirely, and usually requires a balance of the rate in which players get them so it's not so fast that the ability is outmoded, but not too slow that the class can make anything it wants that's far better then the level of what they are getting
Surprisingly not as broken as one might imagine. Utility wise fun as hell but combat wise pretty normal. D8 hp makes you as tank as a rouge or a Claric
I played an artificier that had a mechanical spider , by the end of the campaign, it could make fire slashes, shoot poison arrows , and had a sprinkler function on to of its body that created a healing rain
And for emergencies, it could shoot 2 rockets of its mouth
All that while I hide under it because I was a weakling 😂😂
I’m playing Artificer in a setting with Fallout level tech on top of the typical high fantasy stuff
My inner little engineer looks forward to this game every week, and I spend my off time thinking outside the box on how to solve problems the DM throws at us
Sorcerer keeps him on his toes in combat
I keep him on his toes for the puzzles
The best part is if your dm allows things and forgets he forgot he told me i could revive the dead after i created a revival potion but i had it well documented i perseded to raise an army of 10k and take over the world by arming them with guns i became the bbeg and fought god and won
I once used my iron defender to grapple a poor soul and then cast heat metal on the defender. Healed them up after with a bunch of mends
Nothing like 21ac at level 5 mounted combatant and battlesmith.
My DM sees mine as a the reason why the Geneva Conventions were created.
I'm a new DM. Like brand new. My first session of my first campaign is next week. One of the players is a Black Dragonborn Artificier Artillerist.
I'm in danger. 🙃
Lol just ban artificers, remember, your job as a D.M is to have fun and make sure everyone else can have fun. if you are worried a class will make the other party members useless just ask nicely if they can use another, if they say no ban the class anyway.
My advice for new D.Ms is what I call "old school rules" the only classes you can pick are warrior, ranger, thief, mage etc. It makes things so much simpler and makes the players try more and think more since they cant rely on metagame bullshit.
@@gentlyvillainous u don't need to ban the artificer to keep things balanced just limit theyr resources and make em roll intelligent checks to make sure the thing theyr building works, being artificer also doesnt automatically mean u know everything there might be plenty of things your artificer might have to study in order for em to build something they dont have experience in, truth be told, the artificer is no were near game breaking as allot of RUclipsrs make it seem and are pretty easy to deal with. (As for my sources, im an artificer player, also the rules.)
As a DM with a player character in our campaign to keep the plot healthy, I have now decided to be an Artificer.
Dang even the late great Albert Einstein know their might.
Wizard: I cast similacrum on the artificer.
DM: What have you done.
Dr. Victor Von Doom🗿 approve that Aspect of magic 💯✅
An artificer just means I don't have to be the one worrying about giving the party cool magic items.
Multi class artificer with a warlock bound weapon so not even heat metal can disarm
Then the Armorer Artificer asshole that hogs all of the infusions to himself. Totally me.
I have an Artificer player in my game and she's just the party's repairman
Gonna play an Autognome Armorer Artificer, that way I can upgrade my body over time, my DM will be so happy 😎
Also: Get ready for a lot of DMs will insists that Artifices are Sci-Fi and don't belong in the game for some reason, despite the fact they use magic. Because apparently anything autonomous is a robot and magical constructs aren't real. Ignore that iron golem you fought two sessions ago, that didn't count because it was the DMs idea.
I literally figured out how to build a omniversal device whilst also knowing i can easily create a nuke by surpressing a fireball and adding energy to it to become a nuke when it climax's
I once managed to create an artificer so powerful my DM had to give the bbeg over 4k HP just to survive. The entire group now monitors my character creation from now on to avoid a repeat.
Time to play a little game I like to call Megazord formation against the Tarasque
I know a duscord server that has banned artificer since it was released.
Even today in their "continents", homebrew world they have rules like: "In my country there is no magic, so we enslave artificers".
Does anyone else see Rex Salazar from Generator Rex when looking at the 1st image? Or is it just me because this has given me a great idea for a character and a gimmick to make his abilities actually fair for the campaign
ayy my favorite class.
or as WotC likes to think of it:
"what do you mean we made a second int caster class? when?" whilst hiding 5 new wizard subclasses behind their back
As a DM, I love artificers
One of my artificers went to avernus with a practical nuclear warhead. Asmodeus didnt like this very much, so he stole the nuke and doomed my artificer to go to hell when he died. And so to remedy the situation, my artificer transferred his soul into an adamantine automaton, and over the course of 50 years has amassed an army of automatons of which he has complete control over to raid hell and kill Asmodeus.
My dm actually encouraged artificer use because he made a creation system for magic items. 1 floating city powered by a nuclear reactor later, he was singing a different tune.
One bag of holding? How about a hundred bags of holding? A ring of Protection? How about one for each finger ontop of a Cloak of Protection? A Belt of Hill Giant's Strength? Barrier Tattoo. Ring of Regeneration. Spell Gem.
Our squad who started with me as an artificer and a friend as a bard buffing our barbarian up to limitless. Our DM was so frustrated
Sometime within the next year, a friend plans to run a campaign with 2 parties that have separate sessions but in the same world and story, one team the “good guys” and one team the “bad guys”. If I end up on the side of evil, and with my DM’s help finding how, I plan to go an armorer or battle smith artificer that uses magically powered automatons as puppets they can control from a distance, so even if the puppet is destroyed, they’ll be fine.
I made a tank onces that bbeg didnt see it coming
Did she just... but... how did... bazooka... WHAT?!
So, i am currently dming and one of the players is an artificer. She is played by my grandma and the character is based on Inspector Gadget. Since i have to reexplain what she can and cant do each time, I still control the magic item distribution. 😊 Unfortunately though, the other players are trying to help her to their benfit. We'll see how it works out.😅
Ah yes my blood and iron build is 10 levels armorer arty and 10 levels mutagen blood hunter, I now have a 24 intelligence and can use sharpshooter and still get a +12 to hit on every attack and get a +7 to all my physical stat saves and can boost that higher with flash of genius if need be and of course crimson rite is just great bonus damage.
Please no
@@BibbiCodex don’t worry I would only pull this out on lvl 20 oneshots. Playing this monster in a campaign would be ridiculous for other players power scaling and wouldn’t be fair to them.
I literally made Ironman with an artificer. Armorer.
Then there's me, giving the artificer the most random shit to see what they'll do with it. I have yet to be disappointed. 😂😂
I’m chillin cause my dnd is honestly built like a skeleton
I never get to actually play DnD, but have started games before and always wanted to make a warforged artificer and modify my own body with additional weaponry. think dual cross bows on each arm, maybe top and bottom just to start
I’m playing artificer and I have bullied my dm into giving me a gauntlet of aroenautical knowledge, and bullied him further into making airship dungeons, he has adapted to play with the artificer not the artificer to play with him.
Personally I enjoy when DMs can make it work,
But I don't like to play or DM for Artificers generally.
In case of my artificer he literally became daddy at level 2(couriosity about drow paladin lead to this fade to Black)
The main take away i got from this video is that I should start watching anime as apparently things like pulling a canon out of ones clevage is par for the course
Didn't even mention 23 AC at level 1, backup healing abilities, and most of the Wizard's greatest hits for utility. Truly a versatile class.
My artificer is half gnome half tiefling
her name is Navia Lockwood.. who has a habit of causing chaos. She also got a toad familiar named Spud
Accurate.
Personaly I keep thé stun on first turn but consider most Can bé countered, and if player do guy get its turn back, sleep or dazzled? Have an allie punch you back into your skull. Paralised? Counter the source! Etc... After first turn I usually allow Saving Roll if character is concious. Or i ask to burn a ressource, usually a rest dice or take exhaustion.
Giving choice is important but those debilitating effects are supposéd to exist, to scare player or make them feel in control. Because any rule I apply apply to all player and Monster, do if I remove stun from Monster player cant do it either
There’s nothing funnier than a dude with a bow and arrow getting pulled up on by a guy with a gun. Perfectly balanced 👌
"From the moment I understood the weakness of my flesh, it disgusted me. I craved the strength and certainty of steel. I aspired to the purity of the Blessed Machine. Your kind cling to your flesh, as though it will not decay and fail you. One day the crude biomass you call a temple will wither, and you will beg my kind to save you. But I am already saved, for the Machine is immortal."
Yes
I like to play artificer when the DM says "this is an authentic medieval setting so no guns" and yet is completely fine with all the magical bullshit. What they usually means is "stereotypical fantasy setting"
Close to the ending of my past campaign, our dm asked us to submit a second character to roleplay a split in the party that needed yo happen, sending some of us in the original party to another dimension. For this lv14 side character I choose an artificer Battle smith with 27 ac [legal] with the option to shield. Enemies could only hit me with a nat 20
audio is in the basement
As a dm, I’m gonna start a dnd club at my school soon and if I get a player who’s played a lot of dnd and knows how to abuse a artificer, I might quit dming.
Oh don't do that. Embrace it. What you need to remember as a DM is that if the players can do it, your villains can too, but better.
