  • Subpostmasters are still not protected by a Trades Union and yet the same Horizon problems are continuing, with subpostmasters personally liable for deficits, in spite of the judgements against Post Office Ltd. The National Federation of Subpostmasters, is the only organisation Post Office Ltd recognises as acting on behalf of subpostmasters but it is not a Trades Union and cannot legally undertake collective bargaining. The NFSP is a company limited by guarantee ,which receives over £2M a year from the Post Office, but not only has never correctly signed up subpostmasters as company members but obviously is not independent of the Post Office Ltd given the controlling conditions the Post Office places over them in return for the grant.
Mark Baker worked for the Post Office for many years and was a national representative on the NFSP. He exposed their connection with Post Office Ltd to the Bates litigation. Disillusioned, he is now branch secretary of the CWU Postmasters Branch.
Mark gives fascinating details about how Post Office Ltd operated.

I always thought the burden of proof was on the prosecution.

The £2.5 million per annum that the Post Office pays the NFSP is not its own money. Because of the liabilities of the compensation it owes to the subpostmasters which effectively makes it insolvent and it requires a government bailout, the money belongs to the taxpayer.

If nothing else, this horrific episode is another compelling proof (there are many) of the inevitable consequence of attempting to organize the affairs of humanity without first acknowledging and adhering to a lethally accurate, finely tuned moral compass. The fact that no one was aware enough to spot an unusual trend in prosecutions or more to the point, their brains were not conditioned to allow such suspicions to be aroused, should be a great concern to everybody. All of evil and corruption (which this was), also includes the degradation of the mind which itself is rooted in the fact that the West more than most, deified money. So when Dick Gregory announced in 1979 concerning America he said "If I were to tell you that the number one problem today in this country is racism or sexism or the number one problem was hunger or the gap between rich and poor, so if those were the problems, we could fix them? No, the number one problem in America today is that it is morally and spiritually bankrupt!"
