It is the best vanilla! One tip I have, after making jars of this for years, is to cut the beans down lengthwise and then chop into one inch pieces. Not as pretty but when you start using the extract you don’t want the beans to stick out of the vodka or it will mold. Then when it’s halfway used you top it off with vodka and wait a few months again before resuming use. You can top off three times before the beans are worn out, in my opinion!

Would be cool to see a video of you making a recipe using only items that you have canned. Homemade canned ingredients from the pantry. No substitutions 😊

This makes the best vanilla. I've been doing this for 5 years. I've tried both types of alcohol, I don't drink but friends I've given some to say vodka is the best. I've made vanilla sugar by putting cut beans (about 4) in 4 lbs of sugar and let it sit for about 3 months. Love doing stuff like this. Thanks for sharing.

I love making real vanilla extract and vanilla sugar as well. There is no comparison to homemade vanilla and also vanilla sugar for coffee cakes baking cookies etc… when I buy 1-2 gallons of vodka every year people think I’m drinking. I use alcohol for other things to making perfume.

Hi neighbor and friend! It’s usable in 6 mos but the longer it goes it’s much better. In addition to Vodka I also use Rum or even Spiced Rum for a unique flavor. As an FYI, the beans can be used over so never throw them away. I’ve got some vanilla that I made in 2017 and it’s calling my name. Thanks for reminding me to purchase more beans. ❤

Regarding the vanilla beans in the bottle- cut them up so the part sticking out of the vodka can continue to extract. You probably don't have to worry about any of it going bad, but get all of the flavor. After extracting you can decant and use them for another round, then scrape out the seeds if they weren't cut to use as vanilla paste, then lay the beans out to dry and put them in sugar for a bit to make vanilla sugar. One bean flavors quite a bit of sugar, a couple of cups. Thanks for sharing your way to make it! Editing to add- after making the sugar, you can dehydrate the bean until super dry, spin it up in a coffee grinder and you'll have vanilla powder. The bean that I left whole took much longer to make than the ones I cut open like you did

Hi Leilani, use the cheap inexpensive vodka and let sit for a minimum of 6mths. I've used vodka to make mine for years and then I tried spiced rum and never looked back! 😂 you can also make a non alcohol version with glycerin. Hugs from Cork Ireland 🇮🇪

I got tears rolling out my eyes taking a couple shots in between pouring vodka in the bottles you're giggling and laughing. No wonder you and your husband has said many years of great relationships. Gosh I love your laughing. So funny! Good to see you feeling good😂

I made this a few years ago and did a deep dive into making your own, its not as simple as you would expect. You have to make sure the proof of the alcohol is correct and what to do to make it correct. And most of all it take a year or more to be ready. I started using mine after a year and it was amazing. I did some with rum and some with vodka. Both are amazing, but the rum is my favorite 😊

A friend suggested spiced rum, like captain Morgan's. I haven't tried that yet but it sounds really good. Also, when you've used the vanilla, top it off again with vodka. You can get 2 or 3 more uses out of good beans.

Great job, it looks great! I found that the cheap vodka and Grade B beans work best for me. My last batch was about 9 years ago and I still have plenty. Another great thing is that alcohol doesn't spoil.

I have been making my vanilla for years. You really don’t need top shelf alcohol. I’ve made it with bourbon and spiced rum as well as vodka. I also wait at least a month. I have some that I waited almost a year. The longer it sits the better it is. I always make multiple jars so I don’t run out or if I want to gift it. I’ve also used the beans in the vanilla that are losing their punch to put in sugar. Regular granulated and sanding sugar. Been thinking about seeing if I could make vanilla bean paste

I made 12 small bottles using vodka. They have been sitting for 4 months. They do get dark. Perfect for gift giving. So very easy. Make almond extract the same way but by using raw almonds. Very good also.

We have tried a few kinds of alcohol and even a spice rum, and they all came out pretty good. We also made our lemon extract, which after a year sitting(shaking ever so often) is delicious!!

I like making my own vanilla, I prefer a good clear Rum not spiced. I've done vodka and other clear alcohol, but the xxv Rum has the best flavor profile after at least 6 months. I leave mine for a year. PURE PERFECTION 🥰🥰🐝🐝

I usually wait 6 months. I have used Madagascar and Tahitian vanilla beans to make my extract. I really like both these beans. I still have 6 more varieties to try to see which vanilla bean I like the absolutely the most out the 8 vanilla beans types. Everyone is familiar with Madagascar vanilla beans. I also give them as gifts.
    Have a Blessed Day ✌️

I'm making my own vanilla for the first time ever, and so far it looks promising. Since I didn't know which flavor I'd prefer, I have made a jar of each: vodka, amber rum, and spiced rum. 1 oz vanilla beans in 8 oz liquor. But I have months to wait yet... exciting though.

As it's January, this month I always replenish the vanilla after the holidays and my crazy baking as I'm down to about 300ml of a 750ml vodka bottle worth of vanilla. So i add five beans spilt top it off with more vodka and it sits until November when I need it again. I use just fresh vanilla beans scrapped throughout the year and add the bean to the vodka as I go. And yes, use good vodka!

I made some with vodka and golden grain. The vanilla was darker using the golden grain. The purer the alcohol the more vanilla it is able to draw out. However, both are very good and i do this instead of buying vanilla now.
