This is an interesting conversation. I've had this exact conversation many times with folks. Basically this debate is about whether or not Tylert Perry is crossing the line and exploiting Black artists and crew members, or is Tyler doing them "a solid?" I side with Duane.
If you Google how much Tyler Perry is worth, you'll get anywhere between $500mil to $1bil. [DISCLAIMER- Just because it says a number on Google doesn't mean it's true]
But it is well-known that Tyler Perry is very wealthy from show business. And his success definitely demonstrates that the revenue is generated within his business model to make a lot of millions, he just doesn't make it a priority to pay industry rates... and take it one step further he left Hollywood and set up camp in ATL specifically to avoid Union rates in a "right to work" state so that he could pay whatever he wants practically.
As a filmmaker he is in very elite company financially on par with people like Byron Allen, Oprah Winfrey. If I was in Tyler's Perry's tax bracket, I wouldn't want the reputation of being cheap with talent and screwing crew even harder. I would take pride in my ability to afford a raised level of excellence for my people... Tyler is not just at the top as a "Black" filmmaker, he has been recognized by Forbes magazine as the highest earning actor/filmmaker in the past, probably more than once. He is one of the top filmmakers period... without question! And he sells his products to Black audiences... I think his business tactics cheapen his brand overall, and it is not a good look for a Billionaire.
I would rather see Tyler Perry raise the bar for all than just accumulate financial success for himself. His pie is big enough to share more of it. I don't do business with Walmart, because I don't like how the Walton's have the American public subsidize their payroll... while several of them are the in the top 10 richest people in the country...and it is more than ironic that Tyler got his first major distribution deal with Walmart to sell videos of his plays. And he seems to be, of the same mind as Walmart Exec's.
While I think Tyler is a business genius, I think he has taken it overboard, and I don't go to 99% of his movies. I also do not shop at Walmart. I would rather pay more money, for what is good for the people.
With all Tyler's success you cannot tell me that he cannot earn top dollar from brands trying to target Black audiences i.e. Pepsi, or Coke, or McDonald's, Nike, Cadillac etc. All these brands that target the Black Audience can advertise in Tyler's TV shows, and he can make the sponsorship revenue to pay his artists and crews much better money than he does. I cannot turn a blind eye to that. I'm surprised Cedric was defending Tyler so. Because we don't have to have our "hand in Tyler's pocket" to know how successful heTyler is.
The mere fact that this is a discussion around Tyler Perry should be embarrassing to him. And he should aim to change the narrative. If anyone has that kind of money, he does.
