- I spent the day with green woodworker Lee Stoffer and he kindly took the time to record this video with me demonstrating his process for carving a spoon
Lee's Instagram - / stoffercraft
Apologise for the 'strobe' effect on the video but this was due to us recording indoors under fluorescent lighting as there was bad weather outside to record there
As always I appreciate you watching
Peace
Zed
15min in and Lee has a basic spoon shape, 15 min in i'm still hoping the bleeding stops and i don't need to go to the hospital.
Beautiful work and awesome set of tools!!
+Adam Craig Indeed Lee makes it look very easy :) ~Peace~
Love you videos Zed. Really enjoy watching them.
Cheers from Canada
I return to this video often to refresh myself on the fundamentals of spoon carving. Great job Lee!
Thats awesome to hear Mark, all testament to Lee's wonderful teaching and ironically this video was the start for a lot of carvers who are around today ~Peace~
I do as well! I used to have the hardest time axing out blanks until this video and some practice
This guy is a master spoon carving! Congrats.
Gracias Rogerio ~Peace~
The speed and precision Lee exhibits in this video is remarkable! These green wood carving videos you're doing with Lee, Martin and Adam are among your best. Thanks for doing them.
You are very kind thank you, i'm grateful these great craftsmen take the time out to allow me to document their processes they have taken many years to refine ~Peace~
What type of wood was he using?
Very kind words, thank you, the wood is Rowan and really quite nice to carve. Cheers
Thank you, Zed and Lee. You are doing great work. Always entertaining and informative.
Sincerely appreciate the kind words and for watching Jeff thank you ~Peace~

Great Video! I used to carve and other 18 other art forms in 60s to 1990, had Spinal Meningitis, lost memories, over 28 years!!! Carved very first Totem Pole in our Yukon, next to Alaska. When watch Lee Stoffer and others, truly believe that I will be trying this in very near future!!! Thank you, for you are encouraging to me!!! Stan Peters.
Thank you for your kind words Stan and am sorry to hear of your health challenges, sincerely wishing you the best with your carving moving forward my friend ~Peace~
Really enjoyed that. Amazing hand with the ax as well as the knife in his process. Thanks the you and Lee for this one.
Jeff H A pleasure Jeff and I couldnt agree more about the amazing control Lee had with the axe ~Peace~
Great tutorial! I am interested in carving a spoon and really didn't know where to begin, now I do, just need to find a few more tools to do the job right.
Hi Ken I sincerely appreciate your kind words and it's worth mentioning that I have all my tutorials listed on my blog for easier access - zedoutdoors.com/video-tutorials

This was great to watch! Thanks for sharing Lee and Zed!
You are very kind my friend thank you! ~Peace~
Thanks very much for all the kind words folks.
Awesome work Lee Stoffer 👍👍
Lee Stoffer hey Lee, I know you've probably been asked a million times but what kind of wood is best to use for this ?
always try to use green wood, i.e. fairly freshly cut so it still has plenty of moisture content, species is less important but Birch and Cherry are favourites of mine, the wood featured in this video is Rowan, Cheers.
Lee Stoffer excellent thank you. That's great to know because I was letting the damn wood sit in the sun to dry out. Thanks for responding, your crafting skills are inspiring!
Hi Lee, excellent tutorial, my thanks - what hatchet are you using in this video?
This is the clearest explanation of this process that I’ve seen. It’s excellent! Great video as usual!
Once again appreciate your kind words and for watching dude ~Peace~
Really appreciate the kind comment, glad you enjoyed it.
Great video. Makes it look easy but also gave clear tips to give it a go. Cheers.
evoermine Its the years of experience behind him, hopefully it inspires the rest of us to get practising, many thanks for watching my friend ~Peace~
Amazing looking hatchet, great haft ergonomics and just outstanding head profile, beautiful.
Indeed yes it's made by toolmaker Nic Westermann ~Peace~
Thanks for the compliments about the axe, i designed it specifically for spoon carving and then went to Nic's workshop so he could guide me through the process of making it for myself.
@@Zedoutdoors well, under his guidance anyway!
Practice makes perfect and Lee obviously has had a lot of practice. Very interesting to see the processes Zed. Thanks for filming this.
Sandy
Wiltshire Man A pleasure Sandy and yes Lee is an extremely competent craftsman and humble like yourself ~Peace~

Super video! Lee's commentary through the process was amazing! Many thanks :)
Appreciate your kind words and for watching thank you ~Peace~
Another winner Zed! I really appreciate that you added another carver's tutorial to go along with Jill's so we get a well rounded and versatile look at different ways of going about carving the same thing.
no name Appreciate you watching and for your kind words, moving forward im planning to record carving tutorials with a lot of well respected & talented crafts people so do keep a look out for them on my channel ~Peace~
Awesome video again Zed. I love watching craftsmen/women work, it's nice to see things being made by hand. And thanks Lee, I picked up some good woodworking tips from this vid. Thanks again guys!
Crackin Bit Of Kit A pleasure and like yourself I luv watching craftspeople at work too ~Peace~
Zed this was some good stuff. I find myself watching more and more of your videos. Thank you for doing the leg work for the rest of us.
You are very kind my friend and you are producing some beautiful videos yourself on your channel! ~Peace~
Thank you for sharing this! Had a chunk of tree come down on my front steps in a ice storm last winter and decided to save the bigger pieces. Been working on getting a spoon out of one of the chunks with an ax and a bush knife. This video is both inspiring and informative. Thank you Lee & Zed!
Sincerely appreciate your kind words Jon and wishing you the best of luck on your carving journey my friend ~Peace~
awesome vid, thank you Zed Outdoors for sharing.
Joshua Pugh A pleasure Josh and thank you for watching ~Peace~
Nice axe mate!
It's got some brilliant chops..lol.
Also, good to see the camera man out practicing.
World famous sniper, Chris Kyle alledgedly said, "aim small, miss small."
In all some wonderful accomplishment Lee.
Appreciate your kind words and for watching Jim thank you ~Peace~
Great work, one can tell you have experience. It’s always a pleasure to watch a craftsman at work.

+Ben Kaufman Appreciate your kind words and for watching Ben, Lee is amazing at what he does and even I watch this video over and over to see his technique ~Peace~
great tutorial Zed, Lee's axe work at the start just brilliant, saved so much knife time. Great to watch a master at work. atb Richie.
ramdor72 Thats where I wanna get to myself eventually, doing 90% with the axe and then the rest with the knives. Many thanks for watching Rich ~Peace~
i fell into the rabbit hole of spooncarving a few days back & i've not really surfaced yet. I'm just waiting for robin wood to get back from spoonfest so i can order up some new gear. excited!
The rabbit hole goes deep ...bring sandwiches and a flashlight ;) ~Peace~
I have watched this video so many times!!!!
Thats awesome to hear Ira thank you! ~Peace~
Awesome video yet again Zed! Thanks to you and Lee for taking the time and for being so enlightening. A great watch, and some fantastic advice.
eny68 Thank you sincerely for your kind words and yes its hypnotic watching Lee work ~Peace~
Hi Lee, I found your channel via Zed and must admit your spoon making is quality, very informative and in general brilliant to watch. I have often wondered how a proper spoon is crafted and you didn't disappoint. Thanks to both of you for sharing. I subscribed for the future.
Del.
OutdoorDel A pleasure to connect Del and you're not gonna go wrong at all learning skills from Lee, he's a very humble yet extremely talented individual ~Peace~
OutdoorDel Thanks very much Del, pleased that you enjoyed the process.
That was amazing, the fact he can do most of the work with an axe shows great fine minipulative skills. Cheers Bro and thanks for sharing..
Fell Wanderer A pleasure Damien and yes my reaction was the same to how close he got with the axe, i'd end with a spoon cut in half if I did the same ;) ~Peace~
He sure makes that look easy
Amen to that, to this day i'm amazed how proficient and fast he is with the axe ~Peace~
I didn't know that the bulk of the wasting off of the excess wood was accomplished with the axe. A true indicator of the skill he has!
I'd love to see a video on how Lee keeps his tools sharp. Including his axe. It's always interesting to see talented artists techniques on maintaining their tools.
Have a done a video on my channel with Lee covering that very topic :) ~Peace~
This is why I say I'm a wooddoodler not a carver, the man has got skills
I'm going have to rewatch the axes section a few times to pick up that technique
gumms1978 Amen my friend, this video is something i'll be watching over and over to refine my own technique ~Peace~
Thank you for sharing I just love the sound of wood being carved peace brother
Bridgette Brown Me and you both, thank you for watching Bridgette :) ~Peace~

Zed this was a great vid. Thanks to you two for taking the time. Added it to my lists.
Looking forward to your next adventure. John.
OKBushcraft An absolute pleasure John and hope you've been keeping well ~Peace~
Lovely video, that is one sharp hatchet.
Isn't it just, very effective too when someone as skilled as Lee is using it ~Peace~
That was very satisfying to watch. I often find myself thinking: I hope the carver gets that bit, then why did he miss that bit? On this video every time I started to think like that Lee went right for it as if I was doing it myself. I have watched quite a few carvings and never had that experience before. I appreciated it, Zed.
TR Ellis Thank you for your kind words, yes without doubt Lee is a fantastic teacher and such a talented individual ~Peace~
+TR Ellis thanks for that very useful feedback, glad you enjoyed the video and that I covered the topic well enough for you to comment about it, Cheers, Lee
Technique is unique.
Indeed he is very proficient with the axe ~Peace~
great video Zed Outdoors , thanks for doing this! I'm ready to start the next spoon now.
Primal Edge Will be cool to see how your technique changes having watched this video bro ~Peace~
Love it. Thanks for concentrating on spoon carving. I like the concept of working on one skill at a time. Too often, there are so many things to learn that we get overwhelmed. Perhaps sharpening carving tools could be another series? It's obvious that carving requires some wickedly sharp tools.
***** Many thanks for watching and for your kind words, I have actually already done two videos on sharpening a knife and spoon knife respectively on my channel :) ~Peace~
Very well done and thanks for sharing.
Harry Rogers An absolute pleasure Harry and many thanks for watching ~Peace~
I've been wanting to learn how to carve spoons. Great video. Great ax skills.

raymond bailey A pleasure Raymond and thank you for your kind words ~Peace~
Great Video, well made and fantastic presentation. Thanks.
David Stovell Thank you for your kind words David and for watching, wishing you a blessed week ahead my man ~Peace~
Like the simplicity of how to add the crank into the billet. He does make it look easy which I’m sure it isn’t lol. I use templates as much as possible as it’s really easy to get lost when carving with a knife to get the basic shape
Indeed i'm like you when ti comes to using templates or another physical spoon in front of me, helps keep the focus and end goal. Many thanks for watching dude! ~Peace~
I really enjoy seeing different green wood/spoon carvers techniques, the vids are awesome Zed keep it up mate
Superb video Zed, Thank you Lee for sharing your skills and technique, the spoon looks great. Keep up the good work guy's PEACE :-)
🙌
seen him on instagram he is awsome! Very informative I caught a coupls of trics for my carving thank you Zed outdoor!
Lee is a very talented fellow, appreciate you watching and for your kind words my man ~Peace~
Great video Zed, once again, it would be great to see some slingshot videos in the upcoming future, thanks for sharing your experiences in bushcraft, can't wait to see some more of your upcoming videos,
Alex
Mysterious Bushcrafter Thank you for your kind words Alex, funny you mention Slingshots as im planning to make videos on that later in the year. I was kindly gifted a slingshot by a friend who's really into it so cant wait to learn how to use it ~Peace~
Zed Outdoors great to here that you are going to make some slingshot videos later on this year Zed, I can not wait, as I actually use a slingshot myself and find it a very useful tool out in the woods,
Alex.
The ax head he's using is like the one I just bought and mounted on a hickory handle is very sharp. I didn't get the type of wood he's cutting. I also just got my first kit and spoon blank to carve.
Oh nice, hope your first spoon carving goes well and best of luck! ~Peace~
Very good upload again. 😊
You are very kind thank you ~Peace~
Awesome video Zed. I can't wait to see some of your creations. :)
Sam Clare Thank you Sam, i'll only show the spoons that came out nice ;)) ~Peace~
Fraking Fantastic !!! That Artist has Mad Skillz...cheers ;-)
Kanzee Amen, Lee is very talented and very humble too ~Peace~
Great video. I would like to carve a spoon sometime.
rasmusroriroror Give it a try on your next outing, as long as you have a standard bushcraft knife you can pick up a more spoon knife for very cheap, with both those two you can get carving straight away ~Peace~
Those tooth shaped knife handles are pretty neat
+VicariousReality7 Yes Lee makes all those tools himself and adds real character to them as well as functionality ~Peace~
+Zed Outdoors does he sell the curved / round knife/scrapers ? as a left hander i find it impossible to use right bevel bias knives....seems his are ambidextrous ? Awesome video by the way....bless
Max Wragg Most definitely they are ambidextrous and he does sell them also. I have put a link to his youtube channel in the description box below the video so may I suggest messaging him through there to get more details. I own one myself and is without doubt my go to tool
wow, thats precision right there!
Lee is very talented and skilled, appreciate you watching Mike ~Peace~
Awesome tutorial Zed , very nice work ,beautiful spoon !
atb john
the mi woodsman Thank you very much John ~Peace~
That was excellent-I subscribed.
+Ted Miller Thank you Ted and a pleasure to be connected ~Peace~
great demo! Many thanks!
+Ronin survivor Thank you for your kind words and for watching ~Peace~
That is a nice hatchet, I would not mind having one, I use a hewing hatchet to chop out my spoons. It takes a little bit different technique to use it left handed but it works extremely efficiently in either hand as I use both hands. This is an excellent tutorial.
muddog1561 Thank you for your kind words and thanks goes to Lee for taking the time to record this video with me ~Peace~
Good educational video Zed, Lee makes it look easy, hours of practice will always produce good results, good luck on your new venture, atb, Paul.
Neanderthal 62 Many thanks Paul and too true about putting in hours of practise ~Peace~
btw... that is the sharpest axe i have ever seen! A masterpiece!
OSSU.Entertainment Wasnt it just, im trying to convince Lee to shave with it ;)) ~Peace~
Zed Outdoors won't catch me shaving with anything mate!
This my friend is a very very good tutorial! Now I just need these two spoon scorps :-)
lol the list for his scorps grows longer by the day, appreciate you watching and for your kind words my friend ~Peace~

nilo drallub An absolute pleasure Nilo ~Peace~
Great video! Still learning something more!
We're all life long students, appreciate you watching and for your kind words my friend ~Peace~
helpful video to all, interesting stuff.
Francis Barnett Many thanks Francis, I learnt lots making this video ~Peace~
Awesome to see something of such beauty created from a simple piece of wood.
Nice video, man.
Pondguru I couldnt agree more, to think that in 15-20 mins guys like Lee can turn a disused piece of wood into a beautiful and functional item ~Peace~
Zed Outdoors It reminds me of a line from Rambo III when Col. Trautman says "There was a sculptor. He found this stone, a special stone. He dragged it home and he worked on it for months until he finally finished it. When he was ready he showed it to his friends. They said he had created a great masterpiece, but the sculptor said he hadn't created anything. The statue was always there, he just chipped away the rough edges."
Great Video...so skilled ...loved this
🙌
zed, just recently subscribed to your channel. very impressed with your passion to learn all these bushcrafting skills while having a great sense of humour at the same time. really enjoy watching the british aspect of bushcraft(thanks to ray mears) Keep up the good work and keep the vids coming. clar
