Thanks a lot Zed and Will. Zed, your amazing videos inspired me to get in to Spoon carving. I watched pretty much all the videos you did on spoon carving over the past few weeks. But this one is the one I find best to follow step by step. Today I carved my first spoon today and started the second one. I followed Wills carving step by step and paused after every step to do my own carving. It was great fun and enormously helpful. Thanks guys!! Greetings from Germany
Hi Tillmann, thank you for your kind words and congratulations on carving your first spoon! I am happy to hear you found the videos useful, especially this one. Wishing you all the best in your spoon carving journey and I have more video tutorials coming out very soon that I hope you'll enjoy ~Peace~
I thought "Nearly two hours? this is going to be too slow". It's **marvellous**. All the explanations I needed. It's like sitting with a really good teacher. The single most important video I've ever seen on spoon carving. Thank you Zed, thank you Will. I've spent an entire day making firewood, but now I understand how addictive it is working with the axe. Maybe tomorrow I'll actually manage to make something that won't go in the woodburning stove :-)
Zed, you have made a lot of great spoon carving instructional videos and I am sure that many carvers owe you a lot for inspiration and teaching! For years the spoon carving vid with Adam Hawker was my absolute favorite. Also Aaron Garrett and you did an amazing job, but since I first time watched this one with Will it has become my new favourite and the one I suggest new carvers to watch and learn from. Thanks a lot for all you brilliant videos Zed. I believe we are many gratefull carvers out there. THANKS!!
Hi Jens, I sincerely appreciate your kind words and for sharing the videos to others. Will would be super proud hearing his video has made such an impact. Take care and happy carving my friend ~Peace~
Blessings to Will and Zed, thank you for sharing this information, your knowledge, your time, and your craft. Will, you make beautiful work, Zed, you make beautiful videos. Zed, I know you've slowed down a bit, as of late, but I hope you pick up the ol' axe (camera) again! I left the bushcraft space for a year or two, hoping to store up a fat back catalog of work from my favorite bushcraft vid makers. I just devour all y'alls vids, but Zed, your vids, in particular, are always are humorous, informative, really informative in fact, they're SUPER informative, I don't mind the length at all, in fact, that is their strength, that is what I find so useful about your vids. The craftspeople that you feature really have the opportunity to share their techniques due to your long format, and that is superduper awesome! Really wish I could get my hands on a Westerman spoon knife, or whatever you call it. I know it'd be too dear for an old, decrepit geezer like me, but watching Will glide through that wood like it was butter is entrancing, really wish I could know that pleasure! As always, I've rambled on, my apologies! But blessings to Zed and his crew, you guys are great, great people, great craftspeople, greatly hilarious, greatly informative, and embody such a blast of posivibes, I can't express my gratitude enough. Zed, stay productive! Damn the imaginary bugs, and don't get that wax, don't trade your future health, future soul, for the immediate ability to travel, work, and pursuit of your ambitions. You must find alternate means of pursuing your ends, as they will predicate that ability upon the taking off the wax. Most of the bushcraft community has been preparing for what we are heading into now, they've all been honing their primitive skills for a reason. We are experiencing that reason now. Please give a thought to what exactly, or who, exactly, called you out of the general population (who are slated for total control, sterilization, and at worst, slaughter). Resist at all costs, even at the cost of your lives! It is foolishness to hold on to this terrible life (even as great as it can be, at times, aka finding a beautiful mate, creating a family, having and raising children) at the expense of your eternal life, which is so much more than this vapid, ephemeral, supposedly material world. What is the value of the ratio of 6 to infinity? The 6 approaches 0, nothingness, valuelessness, and infinity, well, it approaches the infinite, the greatest value. So, value the infinite as the most precious, and let the minuscule pass away, or at least let the minuscule, this life, retain its appropriate value, as a place and time where we can come to a knowledge of the truth, know the source of that truth, and behave in an appropriate, loving way, even unto our death, or conclusion of this temporary, limited, pause in our greater existence. And on and on, I go. Apologies, this stuff is for real, and with eternal consequences!
I sicnerely appreciate you watching and for checking in. Hope you and the family have been keeping well and that these Spring & Summer months treat you well. Stay well my friend ~Peace~
Outstanding spoon carving instructional video; Will’s explanation of the whys and hows of his method is invaluable. Of the dozens upon dozens of spoon videos I’ve watched, none has come close to this level of detail. Thank you for this Zed Outdoors!
A sincere thank you for your kind words Patricia and worth mentioning that I have all of my tutorials listed in subject order on my blog for easier naviagtion - zedoutdoors.com/video-tutorials
Hi. I am an amateur carver. Every single explanation that Will gave us was great. I appreciate Will’s sincere way of “talk” to a piece of wood. When he sees a challenge in the wood grain, I also feels it while watching. At the moment, naturally my eyes get absorbed to his hands. Craftsmanship!
I completely agree. Every step, every technique, every tip explained and demonstrated is invaluable to novice spoon carvers like me. Novices, but enthusiastic novices. These videos are so important. Thanks Zed for all the work you in producing them, and for not assuming the viewers already know it all. 👍
Great informative video. Thanks for the great variety of carvers, I learn something from each. I also appreciate you working with each person to post a template of their project. One thing I noticed, and it would be more helpful, is that not everyone puts a side profile. So far I’ve only seen one from Andreea Grad. Since I’m just learning and am not very creative yet, the side profile is extremely helpful. Thank you and keep up the great videos. Im looking forward to seeing your future video on chopping blocks
I sincerely appreciate your kind words and to hear these videos are helping you on your carving journey. Regarding the side profiles, you are totally right and it's something i've been aware off for some time. I have plans in the works to revamp the free templates I provide so stay tuned for an announcement on that :) ~Peace~
Wow! Loved meeting Will. Both of you are so talented and come across as real gentleman. Thanks for this great in depth focus on how Will creates a spoon. I learned a lot. Such a generous and kind spirit you have Will. Looking forward to applying your teaching!
Really good stuff. I checked out his site and Will is not only a gifted carver but seems like a really nice guy. Thanks Zed for introducing us to people like Will. Have a ver Merry Christmas both of you guys. And your Families!
Thanks Zed and will for this amazing tutorials with plenty of solving problems for amateurs like us! Really well explained Will, thank you for opening your knowledge and experience to us. Thanks Zed for your amazing spoon videos. Hope to go back one day to Bristol, amazing city, and visit your shop, that is sure.
This was such a relaxing and informative video, I'm yet to carve my 1st spoon but excited to get my tools soon and give it a go. Will makes it look so effortless, I'm sure it takes years of practice to make it look that simple, I'm definitely going to book in for one of wills classes once I've practiced with the tools a little as I drive up the m32 daily. Thank you Zed ✌
Sincerely appreciate your kind words and for watching Martin. Worth mentioning that I have all of my tutorials listed on this page on my blog for easier navigation - zedoutdoors.com/video-tutorials
Great video, as many have already said- one of the best i've seen telling me what I need to know with thorough explanations and reasonings. From wood block through to the carved piece, brill. The only other thing i'd have liked to see you talk about at the end is how to finish it.. how long and what environment it should be left to dry in before oiling and what oils/waxes to/not to use as not many seem to talk about this. Thanks for a great video guys *save*
Sincerely appreciate the kind words and for watching. Regarding drying you simply leave it in a cool spot away from direct heat or sunlight, should dry out within 2-3 days without issues. Regarding oiling / waxing i'll be doing a more detailed video on that in the future as there's lots of options to choose from. Hope that helps my friend ~Peace~
There is one benefit to a blunter knife... less likelihood of cutting yourself! Great video! Watched many other spoon-carving videos, but this one is much more educational. Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge with us!
This is wonderful! I would love to try my hand at carving a spoon but I'm terrified of using the axe in that way for the initial part. These spoons were so nice and loved seeing the painted handles. Have not seen that before. Thanks!
Sincerely appreciate the kind words and regarding the axe, yes as long as you are careful, work slowly and use the right technique you will be perfectly fine! ~Peace~
I have a different tehnic and i don't have this problem to cut myself, i'm a lefthanded and i cut by pushing with the palm using a right hand tool. Very usefull, a lot of force if needed.
Great video! Goes into a lot of detail. Quite educational. Q: Can anyone tell me the diameter (roughly) of the piece of wood he starts with? Since the wood is closer to the camera, it appears huge in many spoon tutorials.
I've watched a lot of videos and carved a lot of spoons but I learned more techniques here. Good axes work especially considering the Gransfor Bruks is a little heavy for spoon work. With regards to having a "wonky" spoon, I don't worry about that. If we wanted a perfect spoon we'd make them on machines. Our carved spoons are individual works of art. Thanks guys and thumbs up.
Hi Andy thank you for your kind words, because I filmed this a while ago i've forgotten what axe Will was using. I've linked to his website / Instagram so worth messaging him through there as he's very helpful through messaging. Sorry I couldn't remember the make off hand ~Peace~
I was losing my mind earlier today on the neck. Kept digging in each way and I think the spoon might be "firewood" as Will put it. Thanks for the tips!
Thank you kindly Wesley, that Cherry from what I remember wasn't freshly harvested but was still green enough to work with, bare in mind it's inherently a hard wood anyway ~Peace~
Another question if I may: I looked at the templates Will so kindly gave the link to. How do I find scale with these templates? There is nothing that indicates 100% as I've seen on another Zed Outdoors spoon carving vid. EDIT: Right clicking gives option for actual size.
I live in Southern California, where can I buy blanks of wood to carve? I have looked on the internet and can really only find pre-cut Basswood. Really want to start carving but don't know where to find good wood. Please help! Thanks!
The best people to connect with are tree surgeons and forestry workers, also woodworking groups on Facebook are a great place to connect with people who can source timber ~Peace~
When I spoke to him last year he said he's taking some time out from his carving business, you can still contact him on Instagram if you need to get in touch with him ~Peace~
@@Zedoutdoors thank you zed, the last days i discover your channel and im watching your videos in full length one after another, espacially the ones with nic and the forging of his turning knife. The full length is relaxing, there is no music so its like i am there and can watch the entire process :)

Thank you, so much, guys. This was great! Merry Christmas!

Q: Can anyone tell me the diameter (roughly) of the piece of wood he starts with?
Since the wood is closer to the camera, it appears huge in many spoon tutorials.

You'll get there soon no doubt as it can be frustrating in the beginning ~Peace~
Great video. Very informative. One question though, how green was that cherry wood? Thanks!
Thank you kindly Wesley, that Cherry from what I remember wasn't freshly harvested but was still green enough to work with, bare in mind it's inherently a hard wood anyway ~Peace~
The tree was felled last spring and stored in the round so still had lots of moisture and carved very nicely.
Keanu Reeves of spoon carving
To think he took time out of filming John Wick to be with me is a testament to his commitment of spoon carving ~Peace~
Another question if I may: I looked at the templates Will so kindly gave the link to. How do I find scale with these templates? There is nothing that indicates 100% as I've seen on another Zed Outdoors spoon carving vid. EDIT: Right clicking gives option for actual size.
When you go to print the template you select it as A4 / 100% ~Peace~
@@Zedoutdoors Thanks.
@@Zedoutdoors Thanks!
@@wildkev1010 Try Emmett Van Driesche, he sells blanks. Just google his name and you'll find his website
What do you do to seal the wood? Thank you.
Raw linseed oil or walnut oil are the most popular options ~Peace~
What is the best wood to carve for a complete beginner?
Hi Paul the best woods for a beginner are soft woods such as Birch, Willow, etc ~Peace~
Zed Outdoors cheers Zed
Zed is right, those woods are easy for beginners but I would also say to try anything and everything you get your hands on!
whats the company who makes the scorp knifes?
covert-craft.myshopify.com/
Where can I get a spoon knife like that one?
Hi Jason you can get that particular one from here - nicwestermann.co.uk
Does everyone know if will is still working and selling spoons ? His channel is not active
I enjoyed every minute. RJM
Thank you kindly Robert ~Peace~
