I shall always regard this record as the greatest rock/pop album ever made. Arguable for sure, but not for this teen of the 60's.

Tomorrow Never Knows is one chord, but certainly not one note. As usual, just to be contrary, John dismissed And Your Bird Can Sing, which for me is perhaps the most timeless song on the album. An indie group could release it today, 53 years later, and it'd still be fresh and awe inspiring.

This is the album that I most resent how Capitol chopped up the American version.I grew up with no "I'm Only Sleeping", "And Your Bird Can Sing", and "Dr. Robert" on REVOLVER.That was like taking a dump on the "Mona Lisa".

I was blown away when I first heard Tomorrow Never Knows.A dreamy psychedelic tune that must have baffled quite a few people and critics at the time...Paul s five songs on the album are truly impressive besides his basslines are more melodic and interesting...it s a shame they didn t play any of the songs on Revolver live...

Nice review John (I'm playing catch-up). I found it illuminating going back to this album after reading the Emerick book (which was astonishing btw). You can really suddenly hear how utterly crafted the sound is, engineering-wise. I'm going to depart with you on two minor points; firstly I don't think Good Day Sunshine is 'up there' with the other 4 Paul songs on the album. And also, I've always thought She She Said She Said and And Your Bird Can Sing are fantastic songs as well as great studio productions/performances. I love the story in the Barry Miles book about Paul playing Eleanor Rigby to his piano teacher in St John's Wood, during the brief period where he decided to try proper lessons again. She dismissed it completely and showed no interest, so Paul promptly cancelled his lessons and never went back. Cheers, James

Interesting that "Yellow Submarine" was on 2 albums (obviously) and was also a single A side. And this was at a time when the Beatles didn't want their fans to pay for a track more than once. Hence "Penny Lane" and "Strawberry Fields" didn't get on Sgt Pepper in the UK. Same with "Walrus" which in the UK was on an EP and a single B side..

the title was random they were thinking of calling it Abracadabra . Good Day Sunshine was loosely based on Daydream by the Lovin Spoonful. I,m only sleeping was probably autobiographical as Maureen Cleave described John as the laziest man in Britain , in the mid 60s he spent a lot of time lying on a couch reading and watching TV. I thought it strange there was only 2 tracks on the 62-66 album but six from Rubber Soul ( more than any other) but which of those six could you leave off? Here There and everywhere is another Jane Asher inspired song . There was also one track which Paul didn't play on as he and John had a row before recording and he stormed off , cant recall which one.

Hello, John! Nice to see you reviewing one of the Beatles lesser known works! :) I can't really add anything to what you have already said but it's a masterpiece and what great Rock/Pop music should be about, creative, experimental, ground- breaking, melodic, challenging and joyful, it's all there on Revolver! The first song I ever heard played live by anybody was Got To Get You Into My Life by Wings on their 1979 tour so I have a soft spot for it in my heart. My parents met Alan Civil who played the French Horn on For No One quite a few years back and he was a little miffed that he was only well known for that and not for any of his work on classical music.

This album has always been my favorite. Proof of that is that it's the one Beatles' album I brought back with me from London while visiting there in 1970. I wanted an original Parlophone copy which I could not find back in the States at the time. It now hangs on my den wall.

I think Capitol got it right the second time around when they decided to release the The Parlophone albums in 1987.I remember my local radio station 98 Rock in Baltimore,Maryland giving away copies of those albums if they could answer Beatles Trivia Questions and they had a Beatles A to Z Weekend (Where they played the Beatles songs A to Z for the who weekend).

Was about to comment on that. I totally agree about it being more relevant as time goes on. Instrumentally and lyrically, to me, it is equally as good, if not better, than Tomorrow Never Knows, and I do not understand why it seems to be overlooked all the time and is usually among fan's least favorite tracks. Absolutely groundbreaking song. I have a hard time choosing between Love You To, Within You Without You, The Inner Light, and It's All Too Much as George's best.

  • @kevanbrown7620

For me, i would say Revolver is the best album ever made. It is as perfect an album as you can get. Lennon was getting into his acid phase, with Rain, while they were recording Revolver. I'm Only Sleeping, She Said She Said (one of my favourite songs) the awesome, breathtaking Tomorrow Never Knows. I also like And your Bird Can Sing and Doctor Robert. McCartney was writing amazing melodic songs. Eleanor Rigby is just brilliant, Here, There and Everywhere is beautiful. Good Day Sunshine, For No One is also a beautiful track, Got To Get you into my Life. He also wrote Yellow Submarine. George was starting to become a good songwriter himself. It opens with his Taxman, Love You To brought Indian music into the mainstream, and I Want To Tell You is a great Harrison track. I still listen to Revolver at least once a week. Just to remind me how incredible they were.

Thanks John. Really good review. I really can't think of any album by any artist, that is so amazingly diverse in it's song-writing, musicianship, vocals, creativity & production - than Revolver. Sure, even The Beatles surpassed these elements on many of their future albums, but not in such a complete package. Even though Abbey Road has long been my favourite album, Revolver still remains the album that all musicians/artists should be measured against, in my opinion. Thanks for the shout-out. Keep up the great work.GAZZA

Hi John. My favorite time and era of the Beatles. This is the album to play to the Martians, Plutonian and any intergalactic travelers. I could write forever about this album + Paperback/Rain, it contains every type of music (minus country, odd?). Pop, rock, classical, ballads, Indian flavor, Motown, Kiddie singalong and psychedelic. Timeless for the ears. IMO Hindsight shows that if they had really wanted to; Taxman, And your bird can sing, She said she said, Dr. Robert, I want to tell you & Rain could have been rehearsed and played with 2 guitars, bass and drums on that 1966 tour, but why bother spending time rehearsing if no one wanted to listen? Cheers!

Brillant guitar & singing on 'And your bird can sing'. Then straight into another classic, 'For no one'. '

They repeated this mistake with Sgt. Pepper, when they were pressured to release strawberry fields forever and penny lane as singles instead of including it on the album. Sgt. Pepper would be significantly better with those two replacing when I'm 64 and lovely rita in my opinion.

    • @vladdrakul7851
      @vladdrakul7851 4 года назад

@@DropTehBazz Rubbish. When I m 64' is wonderful and a classic and Lovely Rita is great fun rocker that fits perfectly where it is. Both those songs you mentioned are magic; Sgt Peppers works as A WHOLE! However Revolver WOULD be improved if they replaced Revolver's 'Yellow Submarine' and 'I want to tell you' with 'Rain' and 'Paperback Writer' then 'Revolver' might be as great as others say it is. Revolver is a great LP unlike the very overrated Abbey Road but it is still overrated.'Sgt Peppers', 'Rubber Soul', 'With the Beatles', 'Magical Mystery Tour' and 'The White Album' are better LP's in my opinion. I listen to and enjoy them more and have for 50 years!

"Got To Get You Into My Life" is quite well known in the U.S.A. - it was released as a 45 in 76' to promote the "Rock n' Roll Music" compilation, although many people at the time assumed that it was a Paul McCartney & Wings single ! ...I have actually never listened to that "Collection Of Oldies" LP, it just isn't part of the American Beatles experience I guess.. Which I find hilarious and hats off to John & Yoko if they saw the funny side. Paul was pissed as all the press was asking him about The Rutles when he was trying to promote London Town.
