By the way my 8 year old granddaughter informed me the other day that they quite often sing Here comes the sun in the school assembly to start the day, which I thought was fantastic and a great way to keep the legacy of our greatest ever musical phenomenon alive for generations to come.
John--Are you in love with Paul McCartney? Everything he does is "brilliant, "perfect." "sublime" etc. Well, It's not! He's done some good things and a whole lot of crap. As a bass player, he can't compare to Jack Bruce, John Entwhistle, Leo Lyons and many more. Do you really believe that "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" is a mature Rock song for mature audiences? It's a children's song best sung in a sandbox. The only two good songs on here are George's: "Something" and "Here Comes the Sun." Both brilliant and wonderful. The rest is throwaway crap. Grow up and admit that you are a die-hard Beatles fan who can not legitimately review their music because everything is "brilliant" etc. Give it up if you can't distinguish between good music and crap!
I'm convinced that from about the middle of Oh Darling on Paul sings 'Oh Johnny' not 'Oh Darling', thereby transforming it from a rather detached love song into a direct plea for the continuance of their friendship and creative partnership. Please have a fresh listen to confirm (I hope) that I'm not crazy.
I agree about the beautiful vocals on because. In my opinion they used three part harmonies on the song If I needed someone, from rubber soul (when they sing ahh in the chorus). I believe that because was paul and George's favourite track on the album.
John I like it how composed you are trying to be objective and all when it’s just a frigging incredible album that you can only listen to on your blended knees. Almost every song, every moment, every note is something to make us cry or laugh because it is so much above anything musically.
I play this album these days and I invariably have tears in my eyes by the time it finishes. The greatest band ever saying goodbye with such a magnificent performance and eliciting so many memories at the same time is absolutely mind blowing! So thankful I was a teenager when it all took place.
John Heaton I wonder if the younger members of the VC community can fully appreciate what a profound affect this band had on the music world with each successive album release of theirs. It was literally a worldwide event with every radio station wanting to be the first to get the record on the air. They set the standard for all the other bands to follow. The Beatles just dominated the 60's the likes of which will never be repeated again. Again, I'm glad I was able to witness it all.
It was never the same without them. Even though there were some great solo songs without them albums were never the same. With the Beatles every album song was great. Paul solo or John and Yoko was not the Beatles. Not the same quality or feel. Why? Only the person listening can say.
I'm too young to remember the Beatles while they were still together hell Paul put out that press release on my 4th birthday! To me the Beatles breaking up was absolutely heartbreaking I still get emotional at the end of Abbey Road they gave me so much joy they were always my favorite. Many of my best memories of my father were intertwined with the Beatles. They were way more to me than just the music they felt like friends or family that I never actually got to meet. Abbey Road was the perfect end for the Beatles even if they didn't really intend on breaking up quite just yet. My current top 5 in no particular order Revolver, The Beatles (eponymous title), Sgt.Pepper's..., A Hard Day's Night & Abbey Road. Peace
The best Beatles record ever. I love this. Every single track fits in, and especially George shines on this. They all do btw. This is John Paul George and Ringo at their very best. Each contributed great songs to this album. 10 out of 10!! Probably the best album ever made!
This is the Beatles album i play to people who say they don`t like the Beatles. Tracks like "Come together" and "Here comes the sun" usually wins them over. I`ve played this album to death over the years and i still love every single little bit of it. They delivered a masterpiece when nobody expected anything from them. That`s amazing.
Great album. I also agree with you on the "White album" It contains some of the best Beatles songs ever recorded, and Georges first real great song "While my guitar gently weeps" "Taxman" was almost there, but not as good as "While my guitar gently weeps" "Back in the USSR" "Julia" "Dear Prudence" "Happiness is a warm gun" "Blackbird" are among the best tracks the Beatles ever recorded. The album is full of gems. But i still prefer "Abbey road" to "The white album" But that`s me.. Both great albums. The Beatles only made one mediocre album and that is "Yellow Submarine" The rest is great!
How many artists can say their last might have been there best? Going out on top. Look at their sales and chart positions. As they say, always leave them wanting more, so true.
John Heaton mentions that harmony on "Because" wasn't used as much since "This Boy". If you check the Sgt Pepper title track, you will find a three part harmony from Paul, John and George. It is just a little more subdued but it is there.
Agree here come the sun is a great track which since George's passing I always find very moving , all the musicianship and song writing is in my opinion unsurpassable , parting shot from the World Champions of popular music end of.
Abbey Road is a desert island album for me. Beatles output from '67-'69 matches or surpasses any other band in history. Stones had a pretty good streak in late 60's too. Thanks for posting this review.
"You never give me your money" is my favorite track on "Abbey Road" too. But this is one of the few albums in the world where i like each single track. They`re all great songs. I just love this album to death.
Sinatra, as I’m sure you know, said Something was the best love song he’d heard. As for the back album cover, what makes it work is the short skirt and leg out of focus.
Can’t disagree with a word of your excellent review. Why do I get the same reaction from most when I say that I think Abbey Rd is their best album. I get a confused look then the inevitable trio get trotted out .....Revolver/Sgt Pepper/White Album. Eventually dawned on me. Hardly anyone has actually heard it from beginning to end (let alone on a decent HiFi) That’s why it’s never given the respect it deserves. I have a pet theory that Pink Floyd heard it and were inspired to use it as a template for cracking America/world with Dark side of the moon, ditching some of their edgier material in the process. It was recorded in Abbey Rd too. I prefer AR to DSoTM. It’s the best in my book because I played it to death when I bought it as a kid and throughout my life have gone back to it. Can’t say that for any of the other albums. Of course the magic ingredient here is the 5th Beatle George Martin who had a coherent vision of how it should sound. A sonic masterpiece made by a band who had effectively split up. That’s how good the Beatles were.
John didn't care for concept albums and I suppose he felt about the side 2 medley like he did about the "Sgt. Pepper" album, that the songs had no relation to each other. I like "Abbey Road" even if it is slightly slick and there's a bit too much Moog on it, 'Here Comes the Sun' certainly didn't need it. I expect this will be the next album to be remixed by Martin Jr.
For me the greatest album of all time just ahead of Pepper, Rubber Soul, Revolver & Hard Day's Night. Paul's bass playing perfection only repeated on Band On The Run. Frank Sinatra said Something greatest love song of the second half of the 20th century. Great review John. Only Stevie Wonder has reached the same level with his 70's output.
Two comments on the album: 1. It's amazing that, in the end, the two best songs on their last album are both George Harrison songs. 2. The so-called Side 2 medley is not a single medley. There's "Give Me Your Money" through "Bathroom Window," then an interval of silence,, then "Slumbers"/"Weight"/"The End" - which IMO is arguably not a "medley" but a single song with multiple sections such as "Band On The Run" [though I don't object to it being called a (second) medley; what I object to is the whole of "Money" through "The End" being called a single medley when it clearly is not].
In the book "And in the end" by Ken McNab there is lots of interesting stuff about Abbey Road . John was hospitalised at the start of July and didnt play on quite a lot of the basic tracks and he didnt play on Maxwell as he loathed it. Ringos superb drumming is put down to his recent new calf heads on his drums. The guitar dual on The End is in the order of Paul, George then John. Her Majesty was to be cut out but was tacked on the end of the tape by an engineer and they left it there as they liked it. Apart from finishing off For you Blue in April 1970 ( which was minus John anyway) then Because was the last song recorded and the last time all 4 were in the studio working together - they started working on it 1 August 1969. Its the Beatles album I am most likeley to listen to start to finish rather than playing favourite tracks
Ringos drums sound fantastic on this. This was attributed to the new transistor console as opposed to the old valve desk they used. Also Ringo had a new five piece kit.Loce this album but revolver ,pepper magical mystery tour and the white album are better.
I agree with everything you say , possibly my favourite Fabs album but this changes all the time. So many highlights. Firstly George showing he is the equal of J& P in song writing with his two songs . Something would maybe be in the top 5 Beatles songs. I love the medley particularly You never give me your money and Macca ,s singing on this album is sublime. The production is just gorgeous and yes getting George Martin involved again shows this. The cover is iconic , Because with the 3 part harmony - btw you can really hear Yokos influence with the lyrics its very "her" . All in all an album which is totally uplifting and a beautiful experience. Also agree that in Sept 69 it was not a done deal that they would split. If it wasn't for Klein and the acrimony over money and business they may have carried on although not exclusively as a group . maybe doing solo projects as well.
John Lennon played piano on Something. He was not on Here Comes The Sun or Maxwell’s Silver Hammer because he was recovering from a car wreck he was in with Yoko Ono and her child Kyoko and his first child Julian.
There is too much emphasis on the medley in recent times, I personally love side 1 the most, I want you (she's so heavy) is so original it really knocks me out, George's tracks are perfect, the best he ever made in his life (before and after). Oh Darling is beautiful and Come together is timeless. The b side is a bit overrated, and the medley thing was too pollute many Macca albums during the 70's (with staggeringly bad results), Because is a hidden gem, maybe my favourite. But all in all this is the best Beatles album to listen too all the way through.
I agree that Side 1 is every bit as good as Side 2 but I will defend the 'rock opera' seeing as Lennon himself slagged it off. It's clever but brilliant at the same time and John contributed some crucual parts to it of course. And a perfect ending line as even John acknowledged in 1980!
You have not reviewed the DECCA audition, all the tracks are now available on Anthology 1 and I saw her standing there albums, back in 82, I brought an album called best of the silver Beatles, which contained all the tracks bar the 3 Lennon-McCartney ones. so hypothetically you could review all the 15 tracks without an official album of the event
It's not the best though is it? Maybe one day....but honestly that audition and Anthology in general (Volume 2 excepted) is not that uplifting...Anthology 3 especially I find a bit disappointing as most tracks were immeasurably improved on the final albums...eg. Sexy Sadie
I agree The Audition is pretty basic, but it is important in the big picture of their unsteady rise to the top. Totally agree about all the Anthology, its a horrible messy collection with maybe 5-8 averagely interesting tracks. But another suggestion would be a top 10 best solo compilation albums (incidentally I think Working Class Hero is by far the best with perhaps Wings Greatest coming in 2nd)
Interestingly the album finishes with Her Majesty, the hidden track, not The End as stated in the video: Strange how Mr Heaton did not even mention the track. Personally I think they should have left Her Majesty off the album and finished with The End, to me it is the one week track on the album. In recent years I've made a copy of the album without Her Majesty on it and it's omission makes for a far better ending to the album.
great review!!! I'm so glad the Beatles decided to scrap the whole "everest on a mountain" album cover. Abbey Road is so iconic. Have you ever been to London and crossed the famous crossing?
whither they knew this was the last album or not. they certainly knew the writing was on the wall . This album never really gelled with me as i always thought it was never really wrote with "intent" at creating a holistic piece . And just stuck what ever bits and pieces they had together while turrning the production knobes on the desk up to 11. So i just feel it lackes cohesiveness and is an exercise in style over substance 🤔🤔🤔
Thanks for your comment. I see your point but as Carr & Tyler said...'not perhaps their most honest record but its slickness is its salvation.' A great ending, and I think John knew that despite his somewhat negative comments over the years...
hello john nice review the isolated because track "because" can be found on anthology 3 track 20 and you a right to mention the choral qualities of it,,the final words from the beatles proper last record AND IN THE END THE LOVE YOU TAKE IS EQUAL TO THE LOVE YOU MAKE just about sums the beatles up ( the perfect summary to a band who only spread love) ,in regards of the beatles carrying on i have serious doubts this would have happened in let it be(the film) yoko turns up to a session and puts her opinion across, in the studio ,who in their right mind would take advice from a japanese exo artist ,also george was getting itchy feet, or scriveners palsy ,and although contributing two great songs to the album now considered it was not enough.
Thanks David! Yes it would have been difficult to carry on...but not impossible. But let's just accept history for what it is....still love much of their solo stuff!
Hey John I don't know if you know this but that picture you have of Bob Dylan with the Gibson J 200 in his hand is the same guitar George Harrison used on Here comes the sun and other songs . That exact same guitar. At least that's what I read once
There is a great bit in I think the Scorcese George Harrison movie where Ringo describes playing the drums on this song.....great, great song, one of George's best ever. George obviously shines on Abbey Road....
This just has to be the best album. Revolver for me doesn’t hit me as much, personally. Rubber Soul is super groovy and easy but doesn’t last as long. White Album is too long. Pepper is overrated. Abbey Road is just produced extremely well.
Enjoyed your Fleetwood Mac and Elton John reviews also. We seem to like many of the same artists. Do you like U2 by any chance? Another favorite band of mine.
Hope you review more Stones albums as well. Enjoy listening to what you have to say, despite our McCartney differences....haha. Please keep the videos coming.
Hey John what your comment if you never give me your money being in your top 20 best Paul tracks got me thinking would you say from Abbey Road to ram is Paul McCartney's best area of music ?
John Heaton good point my 2 favorite albums of all time white album and abbey road that being said i just the material Paul produced on Abbey Road is just so good and then what he did afterwards with his first album and with ram I would have to say is some of the best stuff he ever done of course revolver Sgt pepper is grate but kinda got into early 70s paul and it really feels paul was in top form on abbey road and I think he continued on that pattern until Ram after that most of his work kinda loses that magical quality I love Band on the Run I love most of his solo work I just feel early 70s late 60s could be Paul best ps love your vids john thsnks
You left out Octopus's Garden, was that deliberate? I don't blame you for emitting it..it's the weakest song in the album but not the worst Ringo track ever.. This is my favourite Beatles album too, along with The White Album, we have similar taste.. Side two is sublime..
You forgot "Her Majesty"! I think they wanted to record this album was because "Let It Be" was a disaster than they didn't want to go out on a bad note. Going back to what you said about their business squables, maybe if they didn't create Apple (which is an iconic label) maybe they might have stayed together longer cause they wouldn't have all the friction. I always wondered why they didn't hire a new business manager of Brian Epstein's death?
+beatleman69 Yes they may have put this out to preserve the myth...but as Carr & Tyler said 'its slickness is its salvation'. As to the split, I think the business problems was one of many reasons...after Brian's death they thought they could do without a manager for a while and by the time they realised they couldn't, the writing was on the wall I think with the arrival of Yoko and the strong emergence of George as an equal songwriter. So all in all, the split was inevitable and not necessarily a bad thing. Glad they didn't do what say Genesis or The Stones (later) did and continue with both band and solo. Clean sheet 1970.
By the way my 8 year old granddaughter informed me the other day that they quite often sing Here comes the sun in the school assembly to start the day, which I thought was fantastic and a great way to keep the legacy of our greatest ever musical phenomenon alive for generations to come.

Definitely my favourite Beatles album.
Ned D. Won’t argue!
The Beatles are so widely respected , even my 98 yr old grandmother has enjoyed many of their songs
Listened to it again yesterday. A stunning, spectacular, splendid, shimmering, stupendous masterpiece. Especially the Medley.
I agree about the beautiful vocals on because. In my opinion they used three part harmonies on the song If I needed someone, from rubber soul (when they sing ahh in the chorus). I believe that because was paul and George's favourite track on the album.
50 years old and seldem albums compare to this beauty ....I absolutely love it ✌️
John I like it how composed you are trying to be objective and all when it’s just a frigging incredible album that you can only listen to on your blended knees.
Thanks David you're making me emotional even though I was just 5 when this came out :- )
John Heaton I wonder if the younger members of the VC community can fully appreciate what a profound affect this band had on the music world with each successive album release of theirs. It was literally a worldwide event with every radio station wanting to be the first to get the record on the air. They set the standard for all the other bands to follow. The Beatles just dominated the 60's the likes of which will never be repeated again. Again, I'm glad I was able to witness it all.

You are spot on with your comments.
How many artists can say their last might have been there best? Going out on top. Look at their sales and chart positions. As they say, always leave them wanting more, so true.
Right on Kenneth. Not many bands finish on such a high!
John Heaton mentions that harmony on "Because" wasn't used as much since "This Boy". If you check the Sgt Pepper title track, you will find a three part harmony from Paul, John and George. It is just a little more subdued but it is there.

Abbey Road has to be my second favorite Beatles album, the White Album being first. Good video.
Same here, thanks!
Abbey Road is a desert island album for me. Beatles output from '67-'69 matches or surpasses any other band in history. Stones had a pretty good streak in late 60's too. Thanks for posting this review.
An absolute masterpiece! What a way to go out! Cementing their position for eternity in my opinion anyway. 👍🏻🎸😊👑
Wéve also been carrying that weight for a long time. They have always been talking to us.
Really enjoy your videos, especially your favorite underrated albums. Abbey Road is, for me, the GOAT...
Hi, Great informative review. Agree on pretty much everything you said (which is a change). My favorite is You Never Give Me Your Money. Take care.
He said it was his favourite Lennon and McCartney song!
Can’t disagree with a word of your excellent review.

It’s the best in my book because I played it to death when I bought it as a kid and throughout my life have gone back to it.

I’ve always wondered if Carry That Weight is Paul’s rebuttal to John’s She’s So Heavy. Possibly an inference to John’s relationship with Yoko.
I have all The Beatles albums , this will always be my favorite .
Two comments on the album:
1. It's amazing that, in the end, the two best songs on their last album are both George Harrison songs.
2. The so-called Side 2 medley is not a single medley. iain mutch thanks Iain
Magical Mystery Tour isn't a proper Beatles album. It consists of various songs released on EPs and singles in 1967.
Every one of them were playing great on this album. Ringo showed his greatness.
I agree with everything you say , possibly my favourite Fabs album but this changes all the time. So many highlights. Jaylen Turner thanks for the info...I think John would probably have chosen not to participate in maxwell anyway

The greatest album ever recorded......End of & the 50th Anniversary edition is just musical perfection.
My third favorite Beatles album (1. White Album, 2. Revolver) and it’s this good.
great review!!! I'm so glad the Beatles decided to scrap the whole "everest on a mountain" album cover. Abbey Road is so iconic. Have you ever been to London and crossed the famous crossing?
bambi abraham yes many times :- )
i'm going this christmas and i can't wait! i'm going to be sobbing my eyes out drunkenly singing beatles songs!
Great review John as always.
I think the reason that the other Beatles didn't like Maxwell's Silver Hammer was that they had to do so many takes before Paul was satisfied.
John’s comments after 1970 are never objective.
Walking across the Zebra crossing in unison, beautiful, 4 legs.

Thanks for your comment. I see your point but as Carr & Tyler said...'not perhaps their most honest record but its slickness is its salvation.' A great ending, and I think John knew that despite his somewhat negative comments over the years...
My second favourite album after Revolver.
I could listen to u all day.
What about Octopus’s Garden?
This is a class album especially side2 the medley
I think you forgot to review Ringo's Octopus's Garden. I really like your RUclips channel.
And her majesty lol
My favourite album is abbey road along with rubber soul a hard day’s night sgt pepper revolver and the white album
hello john nice review the isolated because track "because" can be found on anthology 3 track 20 and you a right to mention the choral qualities of it,,the final words from the beatles proper last record
AND IN THE END THE LOVE YOU TAKE IS EQUAL TO THE LOVE YOU MAKE
just about sums the beatles up ( the perfect summary to a band who only spread love)
,in regards of the beatles carrying on i have serious doubts this would have happened in let it be(the film) yoko turns up to a session and puts her opinion across, in the studio ,who in their right mind would take advice from a japanese exo artist ,also george was getting itchy feet, or scriveners palsy ,and although contributing two great songs to the album now considered it was not enough.
Thanks David! Yes it would have been difficult to carry on...but not impossible. But let's just accept history for what it is....still love much of their solo stuff!
yes if only they had stayed together ........i must do what john once suggested and make my solo beatle album comp now theres a thought.
david janson enjoy! It’s a worthwhile exercise!
Hey John I don't know if you know this but that picture you have of Bob Dylan with the Gibson J 200 in his hand is the same guitar George Harrison used on Here comes the sun and other songs . That exact same guitar. At least that's what I read once
Interesting will look out for this thanks!
Fantastic record - I've just posted my first video today!
I want you so baaaaaad its driving me.mad
Thanks John. Music at its best..!!
There are records, there are albums and there are monuments.
For me the best song on the album is Here comes the sun. I know most won't agree but the acoustic guitar is brilliant just brilliant
I wouldn't disagree it's superb!
There is a great bit in I think the Scorcese George Harrison movie where Ringo describes playing the drums on this song.....great, great song, one of George's best ever. George obviously shines on Abbey Road....
It would be a better album if Maxwell's Silver Hammer wasn't on it.
This just has to be the best album.
Revolver for me doesn’t hit me as much, personally.
Rubber Soul is super groovy and easy but doesn’t last as long.
White Album is too long.
Pepper is overrated.
Abbey Road is just produced extremely well.
I thought Paul played drums on Come Together.
Octopus garden ?
Enjoyed your Fleetwood Mac and Elton John reviews also. We seem to like many of the same artists. Do you like U2 by any chance? Another favorite band of mine.
I respect them but have never been a big fan. I think Rattle & Hum is my favourite. God Part 2 was interesting.
Eff bono
Wonderful review, John. Have you reviewed the Beatles early records?
Thanks David. Nothing before Rubber Soul yet. Will get there!
Her Majesty? Cheers!
Shit! Sorry I missed that. A Nice coda :- )
Ha! I still enjoyed the video. Well done.
And Paul even had the guts to play "Her Majesty" in front of the Queen in 2002 at her garden party:)
The Elvis Forum she's a pretty nice girl
Hope you review more Stones albums as well. Enjoy listening to what you have to say, despite our McCartney differences....haha. Please keep the videos coming.
OK David, thanks.
You forgot to mention Octopus's Garden.
yeah sorry ‘bout that!
@@johnheaton5667 John, what do you think of Octopus's Garden?
Hey John what your comment if you never give me your money being in your top 20 best Paul tracks got me thinking would you say from Abbey Road to ram is Paul McCartney's best area of music ?
Yeah maybe although I would include The White Album. Then what about Pepper and Revolver? :- )
Didn't mean to leave it out. A put a caption in when I realised!
I actually kinda like octopus' garden :/
I Agree with everything but.. I don’t like maxwells silver hammer, ugh that song was so distasteful imo
Shit tune
The Hard Rock hotel even has The love you take lyric above the front doors
2019 remix please?
they didn't record Let It Be? XD
Let It Be was recorded in Jan 69 mainly, more than 16 months before its release.
no waaay
I have the album
yes
