'It's All Too Much', 'All Together Now' and 'Only a Northern Song' were also from this period I believe, they would have made interesting additions to MMT had they not been destined for the Yellow Submarine Soundtrack, '67 was definitely a golden period...

Capitol Records butchered all of the pre-Pepper Beatles albums but this one they got right, in fact it's now part of the group's canon of albums. My only complaint is that at 36.5 minutes it's a bit short. They should have thrown in 'Only a Northern Song' which was already finished and unreleased at the time. It would have been a great bonus and given George a 2nd song on the album.

Yog-Sothoth i actually like it being so short, as it’s different in the discography. including only a northern song would lessen how special magical mystery tour and yellow submarine are

I got the ep for Christmas 1967 and when it was stolen at a party I replaced it with the Ameican import LP,I really liked Blue Jay Way back ..the mood, the sound and the beat kept my attention like it was a kind of mystery. The centre photo of the LP book made a very nice colourful poster of the Walrus performance.

I can tell you what it sounded like in 67: my mother hated it, she thought we were heathens listening to this, my parents thought this was horrible. I had to ask my mother one day to come in my room and listen to let it be, 1970, I was 16, and she agreed it was a good song.

LOVE Magical Mystery Tour, the album (this is a Yank writing this) AND the film! (The Bonzos!!!) While it's not "Pepper. . ", true, it's damn good. Let me say a word for my Number One favorite obscure Beatles track: "Flying"! Supposedly influenced by Fleetwood Mac's "Albatross" (another favorite of mine), it's such a serene, melodic groove! Excellent!

Never can take Mystery tour as serious as the other albums for some reason.....but then it does have Walrus on it so can forgive it for being a trifle ramshackle...

Great review John and Dave. Just an aside, hello goodbye was written after Alistair Taylor asked Paul to show him how he can write a song from nothing. so he showed him, when Paul said Hello Alistair said goodbye. etc etc. ..

I think what makes Walrus is how it was produced, George Martin turned it into a monster song.

To my ear, the piano ending of the song "Magical Mystery Tour" sounds like Traffic. As for "Blue Jay Way," I get the lukewarm reaction to the song overall but that "Please don't be long / Please don't you be very long" part is fantastic. If it's up to me, I put "Hello Goodbye" on the A-Side over "Walrus." It sounds more like a hit single.

agreed on both counts...but 'Walrus' is a much better song in my opinion

Got this ep as a 16 year old for xmas 1967.It was another very different record for that time.ie they were getting away from boy meets girl, boy misses girl etc.

I think you.re light on I am the walrus. It’s one of the best Beatles track, and that means a lot. A wacky French writer wrote that it means I am God.

You guys do a great job...I enjoy Dave's poeticism's - "The aperitif for the rest of the album", the moon to Pepper's sun" etc.. John, solid as always... I've never seen that picture sleeve for "All You Need Is Love", except in the N. Schaffner book, - in America the single, as you probably know, has Sgt. Pepper gatefold photo's. The MMT EP is also quite rare and hard to find generally here in the US..

I think I made a memory error in saying Baby... is one of the best bass lines ever. It is good, but Hey Bulldog deserves the accolade, and it was that track I was thinking of.

Hello there, I'm from Mexico and your videos reminds me of the time when I lived in Bristol. It is indeed, difficult to come across the Magical Mystery Tour EP. I was fortunate enough to find it at Saint Nicholas Market, also got Wonderwall Music, it was a great day! Keep up the good work. Cheers!

The song Magical Mystery Tour is a great track. So is Blue Jay Way. The somewhat throwaway songs on MMT are YMSK and BYARM.

  • @harrydance1969

McCartney wrote the chorus of Baby you’re a rich man. And Gents your fleeting appraisal of I am the walrus is the elephant walrus in the room?! Shifting time signatures, lyrics slipping off the beat during the second half and it’s Torda force heights in rhythmically cantered phrases tripping off the tongue! I’m also wondering if the 1995 anthology singles were credited to all four Beatles? The Magical mystery tour EP feels like the left overs of a double album Sgt Peppers that got cut down to a single album. Hello Goodbye and With a little luck could be swapped over as they are from the same bag and is the first obvious sign of McCartney/Beatles tastes drifting.

Great video as usual dont agree about Hello Goodbye though think it is a great pop song...in saying that I am the Walrus is literally breathtaking even today but could never have been a single in those days due to its lyrics and the stuffiness of the BBC etc

Hi Guys Nice review. I had said before Magical Mystery Tour is one of my 3 favourite beatles albums, mainly due to side 2 plus "I am the walrus". But, "Your mother should know" in my opinion should have been left out. Very irritating to me.

Well horses for courses I guess. Personally love YMSK and in the film too. I find English Tea much more annoying. Thanks for watching. My friends are coming to Budapest this weekend including Dave Costello so we will be looking to do a couple more joint videos.

You know what's even worse? Boyce-Hart ,one of the main songwriters for The Monkees, wrote a complete rip of of YMSK called 'Me Without You' on one of their later, less successful albums 'Instant Replay'. I laughed out loud when I first heard it ,but, then the same songwriters got the idea for 'Last Train To Clarksville' from 'Paperback Writer'. ruclips.net/video/zwXHIQt7Auk/видео.html

Its NOT a proper album and the Beatles had little or Nothing to do with this album. Capitol saw money to be made and did NOT like EP's. The Beatles physically went in to the studio and purposefully recorded the album Sgt Pepper, which took over six months or more, Capitol put this album together in less than half an hour. It's a hotch potch of tracks, singles, B' sides and EP tracks put together for cash by Capitol.

@@Beatgeneration2010 Bit harsh! You could argue SFF & PL are not proper singles as they were meant for Pepper but EMI needed cash! MMT LP has long been officially considered part of the Beatles' catalogue & song for song may be superior to Pepper!
