Thanks so much. It took me a freaking year to figure out that the MEDIAL not the lateral was one of my issues with bruxism (I protrude my jaw at night, I do not grind like many others). The point about the salivary gland was particularly useful for me. My medial pterygoids spasm causing sharp pains, weird sensations, and crazy sounds in my right ear. I am now convinced it is playing a role in my highly variable somatic tinnitus in my left ear. With your video, I finally realized that my medial is triggering the salivary gland you mentioned (on my right side) which is making the "crazy clicking/chirping sound" (like you hear when you eat sour foods). I also learned that the medial pterygoid and Eustachian tube overlap...so all of this makes so much sense to me now. It explains the random sounds and sensations making them much less bothersome (I now have a good idea of what's going on...one year later!). Now I am eager to use the techniques you mentioned to see if they can help reduce the spasms. Thanks again.
The key is to get your finger just on the inside of the jaw. So when you slide your finger backwards and butt up against a bony wall, open up you mouth, then slide your finger around this bony wall to access the muscle.
Can tight pterygoids cause a sore/tight throat? I've had the pain/spasming switch side for months...Drs don't know what it is, antibiotics no help. Chronically clench my teeth and grind at night. Could this possibly be causing my throat pain?
Thank you for this, I can feel some release. Can the pterygoid muscle effect tongue soreness near the base of your tongue under the ear? I have TMD with clicking/popping on the left and deviation to the right upon opening. The pain radiates behind my eye and down the side of my tongue 😞 I’ve tried everything, it is literal torture.
It's hard to say with out an assessment. There is a nerve that travels between the pterygoids called the lingual nerve. It provides sensation to the front 2/3rds of the tongue. radiopaedia.org/articles/lingual-nerve The pterygoids can refer to the jaw, angle of the jaw, and chin www.triggerpoints.net/muscle/medial-pterygoid
Hello doc i am from india, how many times should i do this? I hv tmj issues. Wearing orthotic. But my left ear is congested and i also hv tinnitus. The tinnitus sometimes goes down but the ear is really stuffy. How to get rid of it? And how long should the massage take time to get rid off the stuffy ear?
When I treat my patients, if it is helping, I should see improvements within 3 or 4 sessions. Usually I treat this area for about 1 minute at a time. There can be other reasons for your ear congestion and tinnitus so be aware this might not work for you
Looking at the anatomy they aren't quite in the same area. Digastric originates on the mastoid process goes down to the hyoid, loops under a loop and then over towards the mandible near the chin. Hooking the thumb under the jaw closer to the chin may come in contact with that part of the digastric but also in contact the mylohyoid muscle
Hello doc, i am from india. I have tmjd. I am on orthotic. My doc asked me to do myofascial release. But there is no good therapist here. I did every scan for ear from good ENTs and everything is fine. My tinnitus and stuffy ear is coming from this tmjd only. I heard this medial pterygoid is connected to eustachian tube. Whenever i am massaging this with your technique, i am feeling my ear is getting opened. Even with the orthotic i was feeling my tinnitus was getting less. Please help me how many times should i do this??? Even when i am massaging the medial pterygoid, it so painful. And i am feeling a direct shooting pain going in my ears. Please help
It's good to hear that you are seeing improvements. How much is a difficult answer to say. I do find when people try and do it too often they start to make themselves sore so be careful. It's apparent that this method helps with your symptoms but there might be something else to help further improve your symptoms.
I have TMJ issues and also ear issues on the problem side. Ear fluttering, tinnitus and dampened hearing at times. Can this muscle effect the tensor tympani muscle in the ear? I applied pressure like in the video and it made my ear do the rumble/flutter thing
Both the tensor tympani and median pterygoid are innervated my the same nerve so there might be some overlap in sensation. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medial_pterygoid_nerve
Can tight pterygoid cause bit change and Pain under ear ??my jaw is slightly pulled back And muscles around my jaw face are all tight i am having difficulty opening my mouth fully because disc is dislocated my bite little slightly right and molar on molar is falling then i correect with my other muscles master

How are you now i have the same spasm which misaligned my teeth and pulled my jaw little back i want to normalize my bite relaxing these Muscles
Thank you so much for this! I was looking for a visual to help my patients with some jaw pain. This was a perfect explanation!
what is it that you do?
@@DrNotleyChiro I'm a Naturopathic Doctor in California
Would you suggest doing both of these or just one?
It's worth assessing both. That's what I do in the office
@@DrNotleyChirogot it thanks for the help
Is the nail side of the finger beside the lower teeth or upper teeth?
Thanks

What’s the office location if you don’t mine me asking
This helped a lot, thanks so much

@@DrNotleyChiro Thanks for this as well. I have so many of those symptoms. At least I am on track to figuring my aging body out!

Does this open the sinuses btw?
There seems to be a weak relationship between the pterygoid and sinus pain. europepmc.org/article/med/6951044

Does tender mean soft or like tenderness/painfull?
Tenderness or painful
Using the second method, by pressing under the mandible, will the digastric muscle also be released. Or can I distinguish one muscle from the other?

Based on what I read here the answer may be yes www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8134364/
Though in this study they looked at the lateral pterygoid
Nice
