Ian Hill was apparently not doing well during the Painkiller sessions so he would only get a few bass parts down before he would leave and so Don Airey came in and played synth on the album and combined it with the bits that Hill had already done.

don't think it had anything to do with Ian Hill's health, it was a production decision by Chris Tsangarides and the band... to mix Ian's bass playing with Don Airey's keyboards bass playing. Chris Tsangarides had already used this recording technique in previous albums.

"It’s Moog bass on the whole album, that was Ian Hill’s bass mixed in as well on parts. But at the time Ian wasn’t very well. So, he wasn’t at the sessions. So, I got made to do all the bass and they kept it."

I never realized how "perfect" the bass sounds isolated. I always had the feeling this was a MIDI bass. There is always pickup noise, pick hitting the pickups, strings bouncing off frets. But there isn't any of that noise here.
And then it wasn't until I read the comments that this was in fact edited.

Fun fact: the Bass is Don Airey on a minimoog for the Painkiller album due to Ian Hill having personal/health issues at the time. You can tell it's not an electric bass.

bass is so buried in the mix on Painkiller and the Ram it down albums that they are inaudible, Jason Newstead and Ian Hill might need to start a Bass player support group

I love working each foot individually in the slower double bass parts. (verse's) I met Scott in Baltimore at Hammerjacks was still active. He was there with Fight. I san him walking around before their set .He shook my hand said whats up looked around to the packed house and said.."This is gonna be pretty cool. Glad you made it from Pennsylvania" And then walked on..lol.it was one of my highlights seeing shows.. Ive been a huge fan of his style since his X days and he still is and always will be a beast of a drummer huge influence.. Thanks for this masterpiece..
I first heard Judas Priest when i was in 5th grade 1980 British Steel and I was like hole listen to this and that bass and drums..!!..Ian Hill is a master at his trade! And any drummers dream when it comes to truly adding balls to the backbone of metal!. I love this version so much again thank you to all those responsible for this masterpiece..sorry for babbling just had to share that..

I looked for this video after reading a recent article where Don Airey said he played most of the bass on this album. It's a mini moog bass synth. I always knew that it was rumored that Don played the keyboards on this album but it seems that he did most of the (synth) bass as well.
