You probably know about NBA great Yao Ming for one reason. His height. At 7-foot-6 Yao was a giant on the basketball court and was actually the fifth-tallest basketball player in NBA history. But there was much more to Yao than just his height. He was a rare NBA talent that transcended the sport across his eight-year NBA career. Just how good was Yao as a player and how was he able to grow basketball to unprecedented heights in China?

One more thing that contributed to his short-lived career was that he also had to play for the national team during the summer hence he got almost no time to rest like other NBA stars did.
Imagine having to play a full intense NBA season, plus playoffs, plus national team games, with past injury records... It's actually a miracle that Yao still managed to last for 8 seasons in the NBA.

    • @holliswilliams8426

Apparently Yao was instrumental in instigating some clause in Chinese basketball ball players contracts that they can refuse to play for the national team if they wish.

Im not sure abt what he was really thinking in those years, but if he didn’t play for the national team of China, he would be definitely consider as a traitor by his own country with regard to their culture. So actually it was a no no situation. What a pity for NBA… But for Mr. Yao, he got money and he got fame anyway, so i guess it’s a win win.

I was in 9th grade when the hype around Yao was becoming very exciting and it was genuinely cool to see he lived up to all of it. Even though he was an experienced basketball player in China and extremely tall, you never really know how someone like him, especially from an entirely different culture, not being able to converse in English, and lack of American basketball experience, will actually perform in a league like the NBA. Not only was he 7'6" but the dude was most definitely a skilled pro-level basketball player which is a rarity as far as having both those attributes and obviously a giant asset for any team with a good coach. It was awesome to see him play once he got into his groove and had McGrady at his side. You won't see someone like him very often in the NBA but it was an extremely cool era of basketball when Yao was playing.

2005 playoff is a shadow that summarizes how bad Rockets’ rotation was in those years. Yao and TMac hardly got any support from everyone else.
Yao never really had a good backup center in his career (Mutumbo only played 1 good season with Rockets), so he needs to play 35 minutes per game in many seasons something nobody else who’s 7’6 could ever afford. He never played with a decent Power Forward until Luis Scola. The best Point Guard he ever played with was Aaron Brooks (Imagine). His teammates were never championship level except for 2008-2009 squad, but he and TMac made the team stand out and become a potential contender for many years. That’s how good he was.
I really think that lacking a good point guard for those years is the main reason that Rockets never achieved better goals. No one on earth could 1v1 defends Yao’s post move, and that is a fact. When he got the ball in any post position, you better just pray. As a result, teams needed post front position to guard him which prevents Yao from getting the ball. Under these circumstances, a good point guard who knows how to pass the ball to him becomes so crucial. Sadly Rockets never had one in Yao’s whole career.
Don’t blame him for injuries. He’s fucking 7’6 and he’s a franchise player. If he only played 30 mpg, and played less international games for national team, his career could have lasted way longer.

Yao's size is also his enemy. His oversize body had been already injured prone to carrying his heavyweight and impact from movements.

Yao Ming not only shattered the stereotype of Asian men often portrayed in the American media, but he held his ground, especially against Shaq and was able to be an impactful player as the focal point of the Rockets. Though of a Japanese descent myself, couldn’t be prouder of this guy.
