- "What is your Brown Number?" is Vinnie Ann Bose's graduation film from National Institute of Design, India. The film was produced by Studio Eeksaurus, Mumbai, in 2015 as part of our incubation initiative where young animation film aspirants are mentored and supported to initiate and inspire them to continue with their film making career. The film took 9-10 months to produce.
The film is a humorous depiction of the Indian obsession with fair skin and their prejudices regarding skin colour.

Black people in America are treated better when they have lighter skin. Looking tan or "exotic" is only really prized for people who already had light skin in the US.
Yeah people get this tan thing confused. If your skintone is a "number 2" and you tan it to a "number 5" does that really mean you want darker skin? People with darker skin tones get discriminated against in western countries all the time.

I've seen some British women getting very dark tho, but i've also read many people criticizing them, so i guess it's not that well seen to be very tanned either.

I was just speechless.
This is fact I was doing my PhD in Germany when an Indian PhD student entered d lab with my colleague, d Indian guy asked my age and said she is 25 yrs and not married she is expired for marriage. When I heard I was like what a hypocrite. This is d guy who would think he is very cool and from India’s metropolitan and doing PhD in Germany. This is the mindset sick but it prevail see in movies a guy even 60 wants woman at max 35 yrs as if woman disappear post 40 yrs. like actors romanticize females as young as their grand daughters actors b 60 yrs actress b 20-18 yrs or so. It’s sickening that people take it as normal.

Its not in ours hands to change everyone's sick mindset, this is mostly because they are taught so by THE " society" for their childhood and to change it within few minutes or hours is not possible so always go with "FUCK YOU ".

Also skin color weights less in people’s views of attractiveness. Since it’s less normal for someone to get an orange tan or bleach their skin, it’s looked down upon as weird

My cousin is getting married and we are having such a hard time finding a makeup artist who wont paint her white but do good indian bridial makeup. I swear they all have them have big gallon of one shade of foundation.

You should find a good foundation that matches her skin tone on your own, then ask the makeup ppl to do the makeup with that foundation. This is the tactic we used in my second cousins wedding lol 😂

My two cousin sisters who are biological sisters and one of them is dark ( aisha) and another sister is kinds light( Disha) . And aisha is older than disha and every marriage proposal for aisha gets rejected because they like disha more and disha is just 19 and Aisha is 27. I mean they are ready to marry their sons with girls almost 10-13 younger than him just for skin color. And finally aisha's wedding happened with a good, decent boy but the makeup artist had to nag us a lot. " Oh disha and aisha both of you are sisters! I was the only girl with a darker complexion in my family all of my cousis were super fair. In my childhood always called me ugly and even said i won't get a groom because i was dark. My mom was so worried about it and she made me try everything to make my skin color fair but nothing worked. But now i really love my skin colour
Besides the prejudice against darker skin, there is also the notion that a girl has to marry to prove her worth. That’s messed up.

Let me admit it.. I was also color obsessed few years ago.. As i grew i realised the importance of values, morals, behavior.. Matters more than colour.. I used to use too much face creams, face washes,, white tone creams .. But now i am free.. Whatever i am.. And i am proud of brown.
Edit:I takes care of my skin,, but not those toxic face creams anymore ,, mostly aloevera products,, believe it or not but my skin much good now

The fact that in my country we are mostly white people , lightly tan some of us , and we have an obsession with getting tanner and darker because "it looks better, if you are too light you look sick or like a ghost" , but thats the fucking gene and the climate of my country is pretty cold ,less sun exposure and there is no way you can naturally tan without having to stay 2 weeks in the sunt at the forbidden hours . Also the "why dont you stay more in the sun so you can tan" while i am blonde and white af so of coure my body doesnt have enough pigment to show up

Im a white person from France and when i visited india, a lot of people treated me like i was a superstar, asking for selfies and photos with me. India, Pakistan, so many asian countries need to understand that beauty is not limited to appearances. Dark skin isn’t “dirty” and no one should be ashamed of their skin. This is a custom that NEEDS to go.
Recently, a brand renamed itself from “fair and lovely” to “glow and lovely” and this made me really happy, even if it was just to avoid criticism. We need to slowly work our way up to complete non-discrimination.

As a south asian myself, my skin had always been a big factor of everything, although I didn't face extreme discrimination for my tan skin, my friends and family who were darker than me, were always told to shower, stop drinking tea, and use whitening cream, sometimes, even my mother would tell me I'm dark and unattractive, although she never used face lightening cream on me, my dad (who is much darker) always tried to prove he wasn't dark and had eurocentric features, but mostly women are shamed for being dark and looking like a jinn (a demon), people can't even get married for being dark, and being light skinned meant angelic, being medium skinned means nothing, & being dark is satanic, dirty, and bad.
yes, as a medium skinned person, i was significanlty darker bc i played sports when i was little, and was forced to use bleaching creams... one day at the beach my sister was crying and wanted me to scrub her tan off with a loofa..its really sad. My little cousins are darker and i compliment them everytime i see them its truly so terrible how darker people are treated it has to change!

My dad is very fair and my mom has a deeper complexion ... When I was born the first question one of my uncle asked my dad was "If the baby is as dark as her mom" just minutes after I came into the world, not about my health or if everything is alright but color 🤦 . Then they found out I wasn't as "dark" and got a sigh of relief.

It is the same with my parents, and yes, the exact same happened to me. I consequently turned out to be even fairer than my dad who is very fair when compared to my mum. People always compare me with my mum saying how unfortunate it is for her to have a daughter who looks nothing like her. They give nasty remarks on her skin colour when I am with her.....I feel sick to my stomach. My father was never by my side throughout most of my childhood, and it is my mother who raised me into a decent human being. Because of people like them, now I don't even feel like going on a walk with my mum.

My mom is VERY beautiful according to conventional features that are considered beautiful but her skin color has been the drawback in compliments almost always... People say "She's so beautiful *despite* being dark" and I just say now "thank god all that melanin is going to keep her young and beautiful as she ages, when we instead are going to be wrinkle balls (indicated at the "fair" person who's saying this)"

That’s a shame. Just know that culture can change! I’m American and the funny thing is dark skin is seen as attractive and if you’re too pale then people laugh at you (not in a mean way). Girls who are pale tan themselves all the time so they can become an “ideal” shade. All skin colors are beautiful... there’s a reason God made us all look so different. I am Bangladeshi, and my mother has pretty light skin, my dad kind of dark skin and me and my brother are in the middle. My mother always asks me, “Do I look Bangladeshi?”, and it annoys me a lot, considering she asks this a lot. Or she says, “You know, a lot of people think I’m Hispanic or Middle Eastern.”. This kind of made me self conscious. It made me think things like “Am I not beautiful because my skin isn’t the lightest?”. But I soon came to the realization that no, all skin colors are beautiful, and at first I was mad at my mother. But over time, I realized that she is just saying what was drilled into her and many others when she was a child, and that’s just the sad truth.
I remember I was curious about why lighter skin was deemed better, so I researched it a bit.
For one, people who had to work as farmers, common people, had to stay out in the sun a lot so their skin would darken. But rich people who had indoor jobs and access to beauty products had light skin, and because of their money, they seen as better.
Another reason is when the British went to India, they drilled that they were better, and white people in India were seen as beautiful and rich, so Indian people, and other Asian countries wanted to be like these light exotic people.
And honestly, I hope with time, Asian countries can learn to accept all tones of skin.
Edit: Just to clear up some confusion, when I said “my mother has pretty light skin” I didn’t mean pretty as in beautiful. I meant pretty as in mostly or somewhat. I hope that helps!

PSA: Many, many, many people with dark skin are drop-dead gorgeous. But companies can make money by convincing everyone that they need lighter skin, and money matters more to them than people being treated well by others or feeling confident about themselves. I have often wished to be as good-looking as someone much darker than me (I'm white so that's a lot of people). Don't let businesses convince you that skin color is what makes you attractive!!

I visited a hospital, a little girl was admitted there. She had a severe disease and was in trouble...someone saw her condition and said how beautiful she is, how god can make her in trouble...I got speechless hearing such kind of statement.

I’m from Brasil and this is a problem here too, of course they deal with in a different way. Here in the south people are whiter. Well I wasn’t born white, I’m mixed and oh boy I was bullied at school for that. I had to hear comments about my skin being darker daily even though in my family I have lighter skin.
When I was teenager I started to hate my skin tone, I use to wash my skin in the shower until it bleed. Now we talk about racism more and internet is bringing so much information that I understand the problem is not my skin. Awareness is crucial

There is one solution to this... Rise in class hierarchy. I know it sounds just like this skin hierarchy bullshit, but trust me skin colour matters less and less once you climb higher in class either through money, education or social influence. I was born and brought up in small village in Maharashtra and went on to complete education in top colleges of Mumbai and Pune. Skin colour was a big let down when I was a kid, but as I grew older and acquired other qualities, life became easier. Though it only really changed when I started my life in cities and got surrounded with people from influential background. I observed that skin colour mattered less in the circles of elites. Girls with very dark skin colour were confident and got partners they liked quite easily. No one ever mentioned my skin colour to me which was surprising. After pandemic when I got back to my native place I realized how big of an issue skin colour is. At least for boys it can be negated by earning money and influence, but middle class girls really have hard time going out with their natural skin colour. That's why I said, don't change your colour, change the people around you. Poor and middle class is so depraved, they frantically reach out for any preveledge they can acquire, and skin colour is one of very few that is accessible to them, the other being male gender and high caste.

This is so true & sad at the same time. No matter how much we say. But India's obsession with white skin is ridiculously strong. The pregnant women are asked to eat coconut cause it's white. Milk instead of tea. As tea is believed to make skin dark. It's more of white benefits than health benefits. A fair girl is considered much more beautiful. No matter how her facial features are. But a dusky or dark girl is ugly no matter how beautiful her features. And the ones to contribute to this mentality are our celebs who not only endorse whitening products. But also get skin lightening done just after they enter the glamour, Bollywood or Tv industry.
Tea is responsible for making you darker, coz it's overdose cause anaemia, and dusky people look more darker because of weakness.

Turned out be darker, than my mother and my mom constantly tells him to use creams and wash his face and use different home remedies. The effed up part is, my brother tells me that he will only marry a fair bride and when I told my mother I'll marry someone darker than my brother, she really got angry and scolded me and threatened me to remove from my family. She doesn't realize how dark she is and willing to judge others. I'll admit that deep down at that age liked the moment when I got complimented for my skin color but now I just feel awful when they compare themselves to me. I admit I had been racist to some ppl in past but now I've understood the deep stigma and I hope everyone understands the message.
When I was 13 I was so colour obsessed too and was insecure about myself, but now as I grew I got to understand the importance of myself and colour doesn't matter.

I'm from Indonesia. We're basically have the same complexion problem but these days things are getting better as local makeup brands start making products for deeper skin tone and they're using darker skinned talents on TV ads! As someone brown these things help me a lot, both with my self acceptance and getting the right product for my skin. Hope other Asian countries will accept that being brown is ok!

@@kenny_ki really? I've seen few tho, most of them look like from Eastern Indonesian ethnicity, one that I remember is from a cologne ad. And also there's this one skin aesthetic clinic (maybe Natasha?) that used dark skinned model on billboard ad. Pretty cool move from an aesthetic clinic imo.
In India Bollywood never showcased dark coloured people as lead role or hero but now with OTT , Netflix and webseries people with normal skin tone too are regularly casted solely on their performance and show real actors.
In South India most of the actress are fair skinned though very few actress are actually south Indians and have North Indian non-native speakers as actors simply because of skin colour.
I just noticed how on the scene where the kids are in school, the girl all the way on the left seems like she has a crush on the boy who’s 70. I love this scene because it shows the double edge. Initially it’s just rejection because of being too dark, but if you think about it, it also shows how the girl who’s 20 in brown number is the one getting asked out because she’s so fair

It feels that this obsession is so deeply in our roots, even we dont know. I dont know what was the last time natural beauty was considered beautiful. I'm 16 year old Indian. I didn't know India had this range of fair skin madness until I searched more about it . I kind of wished I had some degree of fair skin after watching those white washing ads (u know which ones) , then I realized that I should be happy with my skin colour bcuz everyone's unique💓. All I want is clear skin bcuz i have many pimples( From genes) . The kicker, I still use Johnson baby soap rather than those fair skin soaps. 💀

As a western person with light skin: People are tanning themselves here and they are using bronzers because it is said that you see less blemishes/redness or acne on darker complexions and that it makes your face look slimmer. It is also believed that a tan will make your wrinkles less obvious. You will see more redness and acne on lighter skin. It is also believed that a tan will make you look healthy and like someone who is spending time outside (not sitting inside in front of a screen).

If we are more influenced by our history and civilization then it's a matter of pride. Story time:
one time at school one mixed kid called me the famous n word and spat in my face!
I asked why he was being *racist* and he simply said “mixed people can’t be racist”
I was crying because all the other students even the one with the exact same race bullied me for the whole year
Also this was on the first day of 3rd grade, the teacher just stay seated in her chair, drinking her coffee and did nothing! Worse of all my parents got me kicked of school, and it was the racist Principal who thought of that so really my Principal got me kicked out of school and told it to my parents FACE! A depressing & angry start for me. 😔 😤

I am a dusky girl and throughout my whole childhood and teenage I felt ugly just because of this.
People and media keep reminding you of your brown number consistently and this creates so much complex in small kids or teenagers' mind.
Everyone is beautiful and everyone is talented...can't we keep it as simple as that.

Even Africans (or at least West Africans from what I know) are obsessed with having "fair" skin. My aunties using skin whitening products and my mum saying she wishes she had fair skin like her kids. When my cousin was born one of the first things they said about her is that she has "fair" skin like her mother. It makes me sad that some people aren't proud of their natural skin.

True. It's a man made psychological problem we have. Let me tell you one incident. Our friends group were gone for a trip to Lucknow. There we were waiting for our turn to deposit our luggage in the airport. All of my friends are fairer than me, so the lady who was working on that counter asks everyone in english and when finally it's my turn she asked me in hindi.This is a very small incident but it really make me to give it a thought. As I am educated and literate as my friends. But still, I didn't say anything else than a pleasent answer of her question and deposit my luggage. This just shows what people think of eachother by their color. I think outer beauty such as face is defined by the structure of it not by skin color.
Let me tell you guys a story of a girl. *A girl who grew up in an Indian society.* She was a typical teenager who loved watching movies and playing with makeup looks. You could say her interests were her own but the *society directed how her mind would be influenced* .
-She watched movies where the *light skinned person was almost always the hero* .
-She saw different advertisements on how to get the *‘ideal skin tone’ with the help of various fairness creams*
-She would listen to her relatives give her advice on all the *natural remedies for “curing” dark skin* .
-She observed that most of the *popular* creators and celebrities on social media *were the ones with fair skin* .
Being a simple girl, she took all of this in and *accepted the fact that being dark was ugly and undesirable.* So she fell for all of society’s judgmental toxic standards and slowly *hated herself.* She normalised it thinking that dark skinned people are supposed to feel this way and there’s not much you can do with a dusky skin tone.
*She was trapped in the world of fairness creams and self hatred.* She used to hate herself and she wished she would wake up one day as different person with lighter skin. *Then one fine day she called it quits.* Why you may ask? Because she realised the following:
>Dark is beautiful! Have you ever seen a dusky girl standing in the face of the sun? She looks *radiant and majestic, something you can’t really find anywhere*.
>We do not choose our skin tone. Being dark wasn’t something we were asked to be. *It was something we were gifted with.*

When the girl realised this she started to *embrace her skin tone!* She stayed out in the sun to feel the sunlight glow on her face, she stopped all sorts of whitening treatments and focused on keeping her skin and body healthy. She wore clothes and makeup that complemented her skin tone rather lighten it. *She felt like she was becoming herself again.*

I can so much relate to this..my relatives are worried by my complexion. I don't judge anyone by their skin colour but I'll be honest and say, I still worry about mine.
Because I know that even if I don't care about the colour of skin, everybody else does and ultimately I end up caring about skin colour too.

I am brown from a brown family and was discriminated for my skin colour a lot , from my own family members, some who are even darker than me. My sister is really fair and i was always compared to her, told to put cream, stay away from the sun and so on from a very young age. I didn't really care about my skin colour when i was little but once i was in my pre teen ,i was really insecure. I always see lighter skin treated in a better way. The most beautiful girl in the class would be the one with fair skin. I became obsessed with becoming lighter but as i grew up, i reaised that i'm much more than my skin colour, what counts is i'm a nice person with a good heart and slowly learned to love my brown chocolate skin just like i love chocolate. I still get a lot of comments but i do not care now. I am comfortable in my skin colour. My mother is still obsessed with fair skin, my aunties are still using fairness cream. It's our generation who can stop this favouritism towards fairer skin and teach our children to love their skin colour and stop the discrimination.
