So I watch this video traveling down to go fish Destin this past weekend and when I was picking up some tackle I saw this mahi diver and picked it up for the hell of it. We caught six kings on this one bait and picked up a 75 pound wahoo!!!! It was awesome! I wish I could attach a picture and show it stuck in its mouth laying on our bloody deck! So I went back and bought the only other one they had the next day and trolled both of them 😁😁😁 I need to get some new hooks because the wahoo bent one Barb straight and the others are all jacked up. Thanks guys!
Glad you enjoyed all the videos. We are shooting videos in an all new location in a really nice Tackle Store. We appreciate and value your comments and participation. headfirstfishing@gmail.com
I hope this is still an active thread. You have had some of the best instructional videos Ive seen especially on the Gulf coast of Fla. Im in the Tarpon Springs area and cannot get out 30 to 40 miles to get into deepwater but would love to fish for kingfish. Im not after the smokers but some snakes would be awesome. Is there any hope off Anclote key? I can comfortably run in 12' to 45' of water mostly averaging 25'. the cooler weather usually brings rougher seas. I'm up there in age, I have a 17' Whaler so it's not that easy. Is there any suggestions y'all can give on simple hard bait lures, spoons, something simple..??? I have a Penn Fathom 30 LD2, 2- Penn Fierce 2's ( 6000) and an old faithful Abu Garcia Record 61 ( holds 320yds 15 lb test braid).
Thanks for a great series. It’s November 25 in Sarasota. Did I miss the kings or can they still be caught. If so how far out and any tips on location or locating them?
@@HeadFirstFishing the Keys? Can I catch any others trolling using your methods? Grouper? Cobia? Etc? What would you fish for? If you did a video with targeting species during the calendar that would be great. Thank you
@@HeadFirstFishing could gag grouper be caught trolling in Tampa Bay. Any suggestions? Dying to get out there but don’t want to waste time and money. Too expensive nowadays. Thank you for the responses.
Use a 1-2 ft wire leader between the lure and a small swivel. Typically 40 to 60 lb wire. Thinner wire provides a better action. I like using the smallest swivel I can get away with.
+Teddy Giannopulos Generally depths of 500 ft or less is Kingfish territory. Most are caught from 20 feet to 200 feet. You are looking for 70 to 80 degree water and baitfish schools.
You mentioned using large bait like Spanish. I assume you pull them live? Do you drop them with a downrigger or in line sinker or just pull them on their own and let them swim more naturally and just troll very slow (1-2 knots)?
Awesome. We have a lot of Spanish out there right now (North Carolina) and I've never tried this. Mostly I've been slow trolling cigar minnows on Mac-A-Hoo Plugs or on the down rigger but I'm not seeing the larger fish this way. Catching a lot of fish in the 22-26" range which is fun but I'd like to target some larger fish. I have 1 down rigger so I'm thinking pull one on the down rigger and one on top to cover the water column. Thanks again for your videos. They were very informative.
Head First Fishing I have 93 lb. Is that too heavy? I've heard it will deter a lot of fish, using that heavy of a wire. I heard under 60 lbs, but at least 40 lbs is best.
Without a planer it will stay near the surface at trolling speed. It depends on where the fish are suspending and how active they are. Personally I rarely use planers. There are some applications that will definitely warrant them, like controlling depth on non diving lures, and reaching depths beyond a divers rated range. Many people do use the planer and spoon combination.
Awesome channel! Trying to choose a YoZuri lure for Big Mackerels and maybe some Kings off Clearwater beach, FL. When running closer offshore in about 25 - 30 ft of water would you prefer a one that can dive 13, 10, 7 or 3 feet? Thanks!
I've done all that stuff and still haven't hooked up on a damn king even trolled through reefs... bad luck! Threw a damn live mullet out of the boat and sure enough a king got it and jumped about 7 feet out of the water!
Head First Fishing thanks for replying!! Awesome I'm new at deep sea fishing. I've trolled with the x-rap just like the one and another one that looks like the mullet and still can't get any hits. Would love if you made a how to troll or drift video gladly appreciate it!
hello sir, i bought this lure after watching your video. i am going on boat will troll for Spanish Mackerel. should i use wire leader or fluorocarbon leader better than wire ? can mackerel see the wire leader? my reel have Sufix 832 braid line 63 lbs.. thanks in advance
Head First Fishing in my case I’m primarily planing on doing and using that while trolling on 39 hour trips at Hubbard’s probably close to 10 knots without the boat slowing down in most cases. Any advice?

Rapalas magnum deep divers and yozuri bonito our my to go trolling lures👍🏾
Good choices.
Great vid thanks. What size do you use, the magnums or 5 1/4 for the yo zuris? Tks
I use both but the magnums for deeper water than 100 ft
@@HeadFirstFishing great thanks a lot

20 ft is deep enough
Hello, great video. what do you use to pull the Rapala and Yuzuri Bonita? Wire? Cable? Fluoro? What size?
Thanks!
If using mono, tie to a strong swivel. Then tie that to a wire leader and twist onto the lure.
40 to 60 pound wire is typical.

Kings are southward now

Yes you can roll big diving plugs for them
Do you have links to the lures?
How do You connect the XRap to the line? What type of swivel or do you use a swivel?
Use a 1-2 ft wire leader between the lure and a small swivel. Typically 40 to 60 lb wire. Thinner wire provides a better action. I like using the smallest swivel I can get away with.
Use the haywire twist
I got 59lb wire with a haywire twist to mono is that a good set up
Using a swivel as well?
I have a penn rival 20 combo .
Should I put 40 or 50 lb braid ?
I was just going to troll plugs
40 for more capacity.
@@HeadFirstFishing is there a specific braid u recommend?
I use 20 lb mono with the wire leader and right pound swivels and have no problem but Im livebait fishing
What was lure that was shown in the thumbnail? The second one below
Yozuri crystal minnow.
I've been seeing some guys catching some kings, going to try it out soon any tips on what depth I should start targeting them at and what to look for?
+Teddy Giannopulos Generally depths of 500 ft or less is Kingfish territory. Most are caught from 20 feet to 200 feet. You are looking for 70 to 80 degree water and baitfish schools.

Joe Cochran You can do either. The latter would need to be just fast enough to keep multiple baits from getting tangled.
Awesome. We have a lot of Spanish out there right now (North Carolina) and I've never tried this. Joe Cochran Sometimes a bait just behind the boat in the propwash will get eaten by a big iing.
Joe Cochran stagger the baits at different distances to reduce tangles.
What poundage wire are you using for your lures?
Joseph Longo At least 40 lb.
Head First Fishing I have 93 lb. Is that too heavy? I've heard it will deter a lot of fish, using that heavy of a wire. I heard under 60 lbs, but at least 40 lbs is best.
What lb line that gose to the lure
I use a lot of 30 to 50 lb wire.
Do you recommend a star or lever drag for this type of trolling?
I am testing out some star drag reels this year, check in on me late fall.
The star drag has worked well.
If I am using 20lb test main line do I do a Bimini twist double line before joining to the fluorocarbon then to my wire leader?
Don't use 20 lb for trolling. Use whatever knot you're confident with.
Thanks I just got a boat, this is the kind of fishing I want to do. What is a good time of year in Tampa?
Spring and Fall when the water is between 70 and 80 deg.
Hi, Im from Angola and i like yours vídeos Thanks

If I were to troll a spoon, would/should I use a planer or will it sink on its own?
Without a planer it will stay near the surface at trolling speed. It depends on where the fish are suspending and how active they are. Personally I rarely use planers. There are some applications that will definitely warrant them, like controlling depth on non diving lures, and reaching depths beyond a divers rated range. Do you put a double line at the end of your main line?
Mark Shark Not sure what you mean.
can i tie my braid line direct to my wire leader?
Christian Kawaii I recommend using a mono or fluorocarbon leader ahead of The Wire.
sir whats the purpose of using mono or fluorocarbon ahead of the wire leader? thanks for the information sir...😇
Christian Kawaii mackerel have good vision and can see braid
thanks for s info sir. i preffered using fluorocarbon. maybe how many meters of fluorocarbon should i put ahead of the wire leader sir?
+Christian Kawaii 2m
Is 40-60 foot good for Kings?
Yes thats a good depth.

i like trolling these lures..i have 80lb mono hi vis yellow main line....what is the better leader to attach? how would you attach? and how long?
80 lb is overkill for kings. I would downsize to 40 or 50.
Head First Fishing in my case I’m primarily planing on doing and using that while trolling on 39 hour trips at Hubbard’s probably close to 10 knots without the boat slowing down in most cases. Any advice?
Oh ok gotcha. In that case yeah 80 would be good, run straight to the swivel.
Head First Fishing run the hi vis yellow straight to swivel than 18” or so wire to rapala?
Yep.
