Early Season Kingfish: Trolling Live Bait Around Wrecks & Ledges

- The Kingfish have shown up! Early in the season the Kingfish often start on nearshore wrecks and ledge (about 10 to 15 miles offshore) where there is plenty of bait. The fish aren’t as big this time of year but the numbers can be good. Today we had to ensure a little bit of rain in the morning but the fish bit well and we ended the day with 8 keepers!

Live bait ur on the positive side already. Weather ohhhh. Lightning. Stay safe nice catch
Thanks Jose! Yeah we don’t play around lightning!
Though wet and cold it looked like everyone had fun and a nice catch also!
Thanks Jim! It was fun!
Now those small kings, you lip them like you would a freshwater bass or something. Then you gradually work your way up by lipping a barracuda next. Then I would recommend a nurse shark. After that you should be ready for a sand tiger, then a bull or tiger shark next! 😂😂😂😂 I think I’ve been bitten by about everything in the ocean except for a shark. One of the things I hate being bitten by the most of a Hatteras long tailed flounder. Most folks just call them skates. The next would probably be a bluefish. I like the ones around 12-15 inches for bait. It seems like every time I’m rigging one for cobia bait I end up on the toothy end. I guess I’m just delicious. Anyway don’t worry about the mermaids. They just nibble! 😂😂😂 Do you guys ever have any luck trolling for wahoo when it’s raining? Great video!
Lol yeah you got to work your way up and build up the toughness of your skin so the fishes teeth don’t affect it!
I didn’t think I’ve ever fished for Wahoo in the rain. With other trolling fish it seems like I do well before and after a rain. I might catch one or two during the rain but most seem to be before and after.
Where do you fish out of normally? I'm just curious
Just curious how far offshore. Was 9 off red tops and through jetties. No luck but did see a couple schools of jacks on the beach around 60-100 in each. All looked to be in the 15-20 pound range.
We were about 10 miles offshore on this trip. The bite wasn’t that good the following week there though.
never had much luck throwing the net offshore. Do you let it go all the way to bottom?
Normally we don’t have to let it go to the bottom. Most of the time they are on the surface.
What kind of rods are you using with the TLD's?
I have an assortment of them as most I bought used lol. I like the start rods though generally for kingfish.
What bait were they biting? Trolled 9 mile early on Sunday with poggies and couldn’t get them to bite.
We had both pogies and some cigar minnows and they were hitting both that day.
Fun time. Any trouble trolling with floating weeds?
Usually not too bad nearshore
@@jjthurne5206 it’s difficult trolling with weeds getting onto the line and bait. The gulf is better but there’s still plenty
