Thanks for the info. Port Canaveral is our main spot to go to, and all I've ever done was troll with skirted ballyhoo. I'm going out tomorrow and trying this!
Your videos are super informative. You’re doing great work. Hope you keep it up! Just getting started with offshore and this has certainly given me a nice starting point. Appreciate you taking the time.
Thanks for share your knowledge on this video , I learn a lot, I was making a lot mistake , trolling in 30 to 40 feet of waters with out planners , using only rápalas and others artificial bait with no results , thanks again. I appreciate
You can add a bonito strip if you have it or you can troll them bare. Both ways work well. The bonito strip is good for getting another chance if they miss on the first strike
How do you land a fish with 100 ft of leader off of a planer? Do you spool the leader onto the yoyo as you are pulling in the fish? Seems like if you didn't manage the line then it would turn into a big mess on the deck or possibly get tangled with other lines or in the motor if you let it go back overboard.
Thanks for bringing up wire leaders. Im telling people alot that i use heavy mono instead. The top predators have amazing eyesight and ive literally watched fish veer off at the last second because of hardware
Enjoyed your video. I had a question on the size of drone you recommend. I think I heard you mention the 8.5", but the 8.5" are hard to find online. If you do find one they are only plain silver. Any suggestions on where to look. The next size down is a 6.25".
Please check out my channel and watch the planer video I made. I go in depth about how to use planer boards and I give you several different options to try. Thanks
Great video! My parents live in Rockledge, my brother and I bringing our 25 ft Cape Horn down from Maryland in May we usually fish between the Cape and Ft. Pierce.
@@ScottBonnerOutdoors We usually bump toll with live threadfin or pogies on stinger rigs and do well. I like fishing out of Ft. Pierce, last June we were bump trolling for kings and got into some nice Mahi as well in 60 to 80 Ft of water. I would like to hook up with you to do some planer fishing for them we can go on our boat if you would like.
@@ScottBonnerOutdoors We usally fish out of OBX and Ocean City MD for yellowfin tuna, wahoo, marlin ect.. Capt Doug Kaska who use to run charters down in Brevard County usually fishes on the boat with us when we bring the boat down there.
I tried trolling a number 6 and a number 8 planer and got tangled and ever since only trolled one planer and surface baits. Might give it another shot any tips? I always make sure the drone is the far bait and the strip is the short and also the deep bait closer. The tangle was so bad it made me paranoid lol. I tried the straight mono you said but couldn’t even get one to stick I got cut off 3 times I find 6 inches of #4 wire doesn’t effect bite rate at all.
Tangles do happen from time to time unfortunately. Send the lighter planer out first and make sure you put it farther back then the second heavier planer and you should avoid tangles
@@ScottBonnerOutdoors yea of course it’s a part of fishing I also always troll a drone spoon and sure it’s on the far line because if it’s the short and tangles it’s a mess. On the short I just troll a sea witch with a strip bait.
Really have enjoyed your videos. Learned a lot. Just getting back into saltwater fishing after a long hiatus. How do the arrange, store, and transport all of the leaders, bridles, planers, etc?
Thanks so much for the help. Great content as always. Quick question- do you have a preference on your surface bait on third rod when trolling two planers?
Am from South Africa Scott, am definitely going to try your method. Here we mainly use live bait down rigged with a 10ounce sinker with rubber band. Or surface live bait. You mentioned in your vid that you'll post a video on how you target the big ones... Is that still in the making? Nobody here in SA sells planers so am going to try import👍 thanks for your videos
Great video and content. I encourage you to make more videos. Most youtubers fishing videos dont share quality information and are mostly ego videos. Educational fishing content, in my opinion, is severely lacking which offers you an opportunity!
Howdy man! Could you maybe make a video on what the graph looks like when you are finding bait and fish? Sounds like that is a huge part of fishing them.
I am relatively new to this but I have been working with Captain's with 50+ years of experience that have taught me a lot and a lot of this is wrong. Braid is bad. There is no shock value in braid and you will get broken off on the strike. Set your troll drag very light. There is no need for giant conventional reels. 30lb mono is great on a 30 size reel. 6500 Spinning reels are awesome! You aren't fighting 100lb fish. Planers are not needed. Mac-a-hoos with a ballyhoo will do much better on a downrigger at 40% depth. You don't need to go 5-7kts. 2-3kts MAX. In fact here in NC we just put the boat in gear. 4 rods with one on a downrigger. The downrigger will get hit 90% of the time.
I have absolutely zero issues with braid whatsoever. Shock leader is all you need and braid gives me the capacity if I hook a big wahoo or other big pelagics. When fishing “downriggers” of course you want to slow it down but that’s not what this video is teaching. This is about catching a lot of smaller kingfish for an action packed day. I use downriggers when targeting big kingfish
Awesome! I never subscribe but this is the third video of yours I’ve seen and love the details and real world experience you bring to the table, so yes subscribed
Wow Scott you answer back fast I lived in fort Lauderdale for the past 8 yearsif you ever need inspiration don't hesitate to hit me up if you need extra hands or a partner fishing on a boat I'm retired you can hit me up through Facebook I'm the only one in the world with that name don't forget to make that guys Bonita video thanks for the good videos keep making them

Glad it helped. Lures do work but planers with baits definitely catch more fish
Excellent instructions on what to do and what gear to use. Appreciate you very much Brother.
Any time! Thanks for watching
Can I use downriggers instead? I have those instead of planners. For 6mph I might be able to put down 12oz leads.
Thoughts?
Downriggers are best used trolling very slow which is another great way to catch kingfish
@@ScottBonnerOutdoors thanks for the tip. Can I use the same lures when slow trolling?
The drone spoon is trolled bare? No bonito strip or anything hooked on?
And the third line out the surface bait, troll another lure?
You can add a bonito strip if you have it or you can troll them bare. Both ways work well. The bonito strip is good for getting another chance if they miss on the first strike

I usually hand it back overboard or into a bucket with some water in it on the boat

Its a 5-1/2 Gator Spoon King Spoon 350 bud
Any drone spoon in the 5-6” range is great
what lbs of mono leader do you usually use ? thank you for the video
I have good luck with 50-60 pound
Thanks for sharing your tips.... I am not sure regarding the length of the line between the boat and the planer and between the planer and the spoon?

Awesome. They will definitely be around in May. Should be some big ones running the beach by then. Find the bait pods

Not a problem! These are great places to start if you want to use them and thank you!

Sorry. Should have said “how do you arrange…..”
I keep my planer rigs on a yoyo and I have a plastic container to keep my planers all in one place
The video was great. It taught me a lot that I didn’t know about Kingfish keep up the good work Capt. 17:19
What are the specifics of the drone spoons? (Size and weight)

How do you recognize kings on the scope - sonar ?
Big kings will look like a squiggly line and will be a hard return

Great video. Spot on except I always have a bait in the water.
Definitely smart to have a bait in at all times. When bottom fishing I catch so much just having a flat line out
Really appreciate you.
What size drone spoons?
Saying hi from Malaysia...i love your video....done subs n follow
Thank you!
what bait do you use on the topwater rod?
It’s hard to beat a live sardine or pilchard but dead bait will work too

Absolutely thank you!
why load a reel with all of that expensive braided line and then use a 100' mono leader?
The braided line is for line capacity. The mono is to absorb the shock of a sudden strike
Can u troll 5 planers?😅
It’s possible but I wouldn’t recommend it lol. Sounds like a potential nightmare
In line planer bridle. No hand lining !! Ridiculous results.
Makes it so much better right?
What.... Where the heck is the 🐠🐟🐠🐟🐠🐟
Plenty of them out there
Commercial kingfish don't troll for kingfish
King mackerel is not king fish,
Yes it is
25 feet is good enough, 100 is tooooooo much
I’ve used many different lengths. I promise you you will catch more fish if you use 100ft
@@ScottBonnerOutdoors will try two planers one with 100 and one with 25 .. ill let you know the results
Highly disagree
There are many ways to catch kingfish but what I explain in this video works extremely well. Again this is for schoolie size kings not smoker size
Thank you very much, very good advice.
Glad it was helpful!
Are these king mackerel just as greasy as the small schooling mackerel that you would catch from land fishing? With a Sabiki Rigs?? Jw
