In Blu-ray commentary track, series creator Alex Hirsch admits that the series might've done too many episodes driven by Dipper's crush on Wendy. The reason they kept using it was because it was the most effective/believable way to drive Dipper to the point of desperation where he'd be willing to so such extremes as summoning a video game character.
Makes sense. Mabel's a lot more impulsive and traditional emotional so it's probably a lot easier and more natural feeling for her to get a lot of strange plots rolling. She's the heart while Dipper is supposed to be the brain and the calmer, more logical of the two, so it's harder to justify him doing some of the strange stuff.
On the commentary, Alex mentions that one of his regrets is that he couldn't come up with a plot that focused on Wendy. He tried in Season 2, but the story he tried to give her just wasn't working out the way he had envisioned, forcing him to write a completely different episode literally within 48 hours.

By comparison, this episode's moral is muddied by the weirdly simplistic "fight like a man vs hide like a wimp" framing, and by the nature of the confrontation with Robbie that kicks the plotline off. Dipper and Robbie's argument isn't straightforwardly a problem created by Dipper, but rather a function of both parties being kinda dicks to each other and not considering their actions in a healthy way. Further, the problem isn't likely to be healthily solved by Dipper following the episode's moral (assuming I'm parsing the moral correctly) and going to the park to confront Robbie. As Dipper fears, he'd probably just get beaten up for no good reason. The problems regarding Rumble's incarnation and assault of Robbie aren't a result of Dipper trying to weasel out of taking responsibility for his actions (I mean, he immediately offers to take responsibility and buy Robbie a replacement phone!), but rather him understandably trying to avoid unjustified injury. @@corvuscallosum5079 Damn, my response was longer than I thought it would be (sorry). You’re good. That’s why I gave the warning that this is probably going to be a back and forth thing but it’s not based on any malice; I just want to talk about Gravity Falls. Let me start with why I am not the biggest fan of Dipper vs Manliness. I’d argue it’s not as up-front and unsubtle as you said. Sure, what Stan said at the end was pretty straight forward: “You were your own man and you stood up for yourself. You did what was right even though no one agreed.” But that’s not why this all started. It started because Dipper wasn’t strong enough for the test your strength machine. I get that machine was just a stand-in for manliness (the machine was called Test Your Manliness) but the parameter of the machine was strength, not morals. I get the episode was about Dipper trying to figure out what manliness means; so the show threw a bunch of ideas on manliness (which the Man-otaur represent) but without a proper rhyme or reason, for me it was just a vague mess of what it means to be manly. For this episode, Fight Fighters, I feel there’s a few things that are happening. Let me start with the first one you mentioned about the possible moral, “face the problems you create head on, even if it means that you suffer for it”. I don’t think it’s quite that. I think it’s more, every problem you create will have consequences and that doesn’t mean it’s fair but that’s something that will happen. (Again, this is just one part of the episode). And you are right, it “isn't straightforwardly a problem created by Dipper, but rather a function of both parties being kinda dicks to each other and not considering their actions in a healthy way.” But Dipper still played his part (and I think that's the point). Dipper is only confrontational with Robbie because he also likes Wendy. They are both confrontational with each other and want to fight over a girl; like it’s going to be an alpha male fight with the winner getting Wendy as the prize. Wendy towards the end talking about how she hates when guys fight is meant to clearly undermine the whole idea and show how stupid it is. Which leads to the second thing I think is happening, I feel this is further emphasized with Rumble; who represents a very masculine character who can handle any problems with his fist. He’s everything Dipper and Robbie want, a fight. And as we can see, Rumble is a very psychotic man who is living a very unhealthy lifestyle. I think that’s what Dipper is supposed to realize with Rumble. And with Dipper getting beaten by Rumble but still saving the day, it’s meant to show this isn’t a problem that’s meant to be solved with strength; Rumble has all the strength in the world and still lost. Sure, maybe as you said if Dipper went along with the fight he would “probably just get beaten up for no good reason.” But that’s also under the assumption the episode is about “fight like a man vs hide like a wimp”. I don’t think that’s what we were meant to take from this episode. I think the point is a fight (this whole thing) shouldn’t have happened in the first place just from how dumb it is. I think this episode specifically pinpointed with masculinity the idea of the Alpha Male and fighting over a woman as a trophy; which by the end of it completely undermines and showing in the whole grand scheme of things, this is just stupid and unhealthy. I like this episode better because it pinpoints and addresses a specific point about masculinity while I thought the Man-otaurs episode had too many vague ideas of it. But what do you think? Also your thoughts on the Man-otaur episode. I will say, making me think about it more, I do appreciate the Man-otaur episode a little more because I think the vagueness was intentional since Dipper is trying to find what it means to be masculine. But I still think it would’ve been better if it was more related with what incited the episode (the manly machine). Unless there is something else you are seeing. Also, because I couldn't fit it in my essay, I think Dipper offering to replace his phone was out of fear not responsibility.

Check out Alex Hirshs' new adult animation show Inside Job on Netflix
It's not his show. It's Shion Takeuchi's show. He works on it, and she did work on gravity falls, but that's it.
