    Great lesson!
Would be useful to show pros at contact on first serve vs kick serve to compare. Don't think video showed that.
I suspect that at contact for first (flat) serve the chest will be facing more towards the net compared to sideways on contacy for kick.

I'm an average college player and learned a lesson the hard way. Don't arch your back like that - it will come back and get you. Instead bend your knees to get back to the ball, keeping your waist and back sort of straight. Then when you unload on the ball, its your legs doing it and not your stomach trying to take your back out of extension. Its a subtle point but can save many backs.

Some pros do arch their back, but 1, we are not pros (we don't do strength and flexibility exercises), and 2, many people cannot safely do back extensions.

I agree, not practical for most humans. Thanks for watching!

@@amazotron3471 "Arching your back" is too vague. Are you referring to lower back? Or *mid-back* (thoracic)? There is definitely mid-back thoracic extension on pro serves. Jeff Salzenstein has exercises for mid-back. The key is to emphasize thoracic mid-back extension rather than lower back extension.

Hi Ian, I have a question for you my friend. I know that you had to recover from an injury you had and I am wondering how long did it take you to recover? I just found out that I tore my meniscus in my right knee, while I was training for the tennis match against Trey from winners only tennis, and I am wondering if you ever had a student who had a seminar injury and if so do you know how long it took for them to recover from the injury? I am scheduled to go to physical therapy and I was thinking about sharing my situation with the tennis community and maybe we could help others out with that might be going through the same thing as well. Thank you so much for your advice and your thoughts on this subject. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy Hanukkah my friend. By the way this video was very informative and helpful thank you.

A teacher that doesn’t explain that strings at contact will make the direction no matter where the racket is comming from is no teacher !! Flat serve and topspin are the same movement!!! Just body turn and contact point is different which is already explained a long time in Europe
    But the explanation is correct

Yes, same mechanical movement, but VERY different direction that the movement travels in (between flat and kick). Thanks for watching!

@ that’s why you learn people to serve first without jumping for body control !!! Then direction becomes easy

you've never hit a proper kick serve in your life, why the hell are you making a video on it.

Because I'm good at explaining stuff, even stuff I can't do myself. Why is that so hard to understand? 😆
