  • I play a completely amazing rare 1982 Music Man 112 RD Fifty guitar amp with a 2013 Gibson SG Custom Shop. The amp has an EVM12L speaker. This video has three sections. First I got through this amp with a bunch of settings, then in the second section we check out how the Danelectro Longhorn guitar and bass from Wednesdays video sounds in a mix. Finally in the third section I go through the Musicman amp in large detail and tweak EQ and gain in real time! Let's go! ;-)

    I have 38 tube amps, and I got my first RD30 head for $200 on eBay 2- years ago. Scored a mint combo at Guitar Center and both are great. I play the head through a 2x12 closed back with greenbacks. It is amazing!

    Great video as always. Music Man amps still fly mostly under the radar. The first tube amp I had as a kid was a Music Man 2X12 HD in all its 130 watts of glory! Weighed about 130 pounds, too. Hands-down the loudest combo I've ever had in my life, probably not the best choice for a fifteen-year-old.

      My first tube amp was the 212 hd 130 ,it had mile high headroom with wonderful cleans EV speakers. but the solid state preamp tones was terrible . that thing was too loud to turn up to get any usable driven tones .

    I had a combo model just like this in the early 80’s but I put a Celestion Vintage 30 in and sadly sold it. It really was good. The other guitarist in our band at the same time used the head version and still uses it today as his only amp. Also he just had it serviced probably with new tubes. Fantastic amp! The EV in this sounds really good, I usually don’t like EV’s at all.

    Johan, I have a RD112 a 100 watt version which came out first in 1979. It had the EV..
    It uses 2-EL34’s. I sold it in 1986. About 3 months ago a client of mine & I were talking about amps and the subject of MusicMan came up and more specific the RD112 with an EV. He said, oh I have one at home. I don’t use it( he has mainly old, original Plexi Marshall’s) He said if you want it, I’ll give it to you.. next time he came over he gifted it to me! I hate the EV’s.. I ended up putting a cream Alnico Celestion in it. I sounds so Fender-y. I use it with my Marshall Astoria Custom combo (which has a Ruby Alnico Celestion) for outdoor gigs. I’ve used two amps for gigs for the last 35 years. Surprizing how much sound the MusicMan from 1-12” and 2-EL34’s. It has a solid 92 watts clean, but the plates run at 700v D.C.
    Cheers Johan!

    Nice! I had a 1979 MM Sixty Five 212 for a couple of years, traded it for a Aiken Intruder last november. Great Fender Twin tone and good ”empty canvas” for pedals. Also Music Man amps have this quite unique tremolo that I haven’t come across anywhere else. It was just too heavy to carry around so that’s why I parted with it. Maybe someday I’ll find my own RD50/RD100 w/ 112 configuration.

    This is a very special amp - technically. It is a Class B amp, giving more power than a Class A/B amp (about 20%), but at a higher distortion, and with a much higher working voltage. Maybe the distortion is harmonic and pleasant, listening to the people saying it sounds very good. Normally Class B are not used for guitar amps, not then and not now. For the more technically inclined the signal goes into the cathode, instead of the input grid, which I have never seen on a tube power amp before. And the biasing is very strange. There are no transistors in the signal chain, they are
    op-amps in round metal housings, and there is no 12AX7 in the preamp. If there is one, it is a phase inverter. Later MM switched to transistor based inverters.
    Though I must say that I didn´t like the sound much in this video 🙂

    Great sounding in the mix. Little known fact, Musicman was at one point a side project of Leo Fender. There were issues thou, they were not without problems. They were well sought after in the 1980s as a decent home amp.

      For anybody into gear, that’s actually a well known fact. Also, Clapton used MusicMan amps for a while, so they weren’t just thought of as decent home amps.

    Musicman hidden gems left to us by our predecessors.. and of course Leo fender I honestly prefer them over 60s fender inc amps. In fact I own an HD 130 bass head aka bass man.. and a 212 HD which is Leo’s version of his twin reverb Let’s put it this way... if you put me in a position to buy a fender inc or a musicman... I’d choose musicman without hesitation

    Yes, some great Fendery tones to be found in vintage MM amps. So... when can we expect the forgotten Fender 30 dumble?

    • @JohanSegeborn
      @JohanSegeborn  4 года назад

      Fender 30 Dumble? I’m afraid I haven’t heard of that one

    • @corvdb8600
      @corvdb8600 4 года назад

      I hear some dumble-esque tones in the the Fender 30 (like the Kitty Hawk and Acoustic 165) but it's a obscure amp due to the fact the Rivera amps kicked in ( not a big fan of those)

    Mine has the original MM labeled speaker and sounds like crap. Totally stiff and unmusical. Is this one maybe modded?

    Had a HD-130 once, and man was it LOUD! It had a plate voltage of 720V! I have felt that voltage through my fingers during troubleshooting, and it was not fun. OUCH!!

      I had one of those. Absolutely ridiculously loud. Sounded good, though. That thing through a Peavey 6x12 cabinet sounded like about 6 amps.

    Nice I always wondered what the speakers were . Does the L or the M stand for large or medium magnet like celestions ?

    • @JohanSegeborn
      @JohanSegeborn  4 года назад

      Thanks! I read on a forum that L stands for Long Cone and S (in EVM12S) stands for short cone. That’s the distance from the dust cap to the periphery in the direction of sound projection. Cheers

      @dezionlion 4 года назад

      Johan Segeborn ok thanks, and maybe the M stands for medium magnet?

    I have an HD 130, I love it but the treble is very strong so it is almost always at 4 or 5.

    I liked the tone of Clapton's period using musicman. Since then his strat tones at least, hasn't been that good. His Gibson /fender setups sound good.
