Oh yeah, that's straight up his bass playing. He is absolutely one of the most INSANE bass players that has ever existed.

Les is a GENIUS. If find yourself asking “what’s that sound” in a Primus song, it’s the bass. He learned the guitar so easily that he got bored and thought “I’ll take the bass and make it the lead instrument.” He’s a trip. Fun fact: he tried out for Metallica as bassist and they turned him down saying “sorry, guy, you’re too good.” 😂
Additional note: 90’s videos were beautifully BEAUTIFULLY weird.

I read some where he said the reason he plays bass so well is because he plays it like the banjo. Some thing about him learning banjo first and taking that to the bass

This was the 3rd Primus studio album 'Pork soda' (4th overall) and it did sell gold (half million copies) in the US... It had 3 successful MTV singles - 'My name is Mud' ... 'DMV' ... 'Mr. Krinkle'... 🔥🔥🤘🤘Hip hop was becoming huge in the 90's, but Primus was influenced by 70's funk music ... In fact, bassist/ vocalist Les Claypool put out other records that sounded more like 70's funk (not as Primus)
'My name is Mud' is a satire of white trash 'Murica as Les Claypool sees 'em... Primus is a lot of satire and weird songs... If u watch the video for 'Jerry was a race car driver' from 1991, instead of a hot chick in the video, Primus depicted a hairy, shirtless, sweating dude serving nachos to a customer licking his lips 😂
Primus actually fit really well in hard rock and heavy metal festivals... I saw them first on Ozzfest '99 and they got mosh pits going to their stuff because Primus live is sensational - different energy from their records... Primus opened for Rush in 1990... and have since toured w/ everybody from Black Sabbath... Tool ... Clutch ... Slayer ... Mastodon ... and U2 😲 Primus has done every festival they could from Bonaroo... Desert Days... Hellfest ... even punk rock festivals. They can play anywhere and win people over...

The sound is due to the style in which Les plays bass. It's "slap bass" in which the person playing "slaps" the strings instead of plucking them. This cause the strings to kind of "bounce" off the fret board causing that distinct sound.

The weird thing about this song is that it's super easy to play on bass but sounds so crazy. The thing you mentioned in the beginning about the bass sounding like a kick drum is a big thing Les does. He's mute slapping the strings which makes them sound like a bass drum!

That is his bass making that sound. Les has it down-tuned with an effects pedal. You'd be surprised how many sounds can come from a bass guitar. That's why the bass guitar's role is to bridge the drums with guitar and vocals.

that double sound is the drums, combined with the bass being played in tandem with the rhythm, BUT the BASS is the main instrument in this band unlike most. You were right in your assertion, the bass is the foundation. They are KNOWN FOR THIS. He does 'slap' style on the strings so it sounds completely different as opposed to playing with fingers or a pick. The possibilities that derive from this man Les Claypool playing the bass in this fashion alone, is basically one of a kind. This was revolutionary.

You have to understand that Primus is very much a reflection of the 90's vibe. All of the musical and social boundaries were being pulled down and experimentation was high. Rock-rap like 311 was playing alongside oddball bands like Primus and the Flaming Lips. Rammstein , White Zombie, and Korn were experimenting with metal with a danceable feel (sometimes called evil disco). Americans rejected disco in the 80's but Europeans had transformed it into techno, and bands like Aphex Twin, Orbital, and Crystal Method were included in there too. All of this was in the mix with more mainstream bands too, so at a good festival you just got some crazy juxtapositions.
Southbound Pachyderm, Jerry Was a Racecar Driver, Nature Boy (which is hilarious), Shake Hands With Beef, Damned Blue Collar Tweekers, and Tommy The Cat are at the top of my list.
