    Have a 23 in lunar rock…. Bought it as my pre retirement vehicle, plan to have it for the rest of my driving life. Love it. Three oil changes in 2500km got all the metal out of the break in will do every other fluid in 10k just to remove all the wear in metal out of everything. Love the vehicle. I do my own service will do oil n filter every 5000km this truck will eventually get past down to my son.

    Excellent review. I just purchased a off road premium 4runner, in January. I commented about the continual discussion about the poor gas milage on another video. Considering, that those complaining, are mostly, buying trucks and, I see drivers of most trucks, as well as 99% of Americans, all driving at 80 mph, whenerver I'm driving. It's obviously, poor driving habits, that give poor gas mileage. I've been averaging 21 mpg since purchase, I drive at the speed limit, or a little above. I always get to my destination, and I've been driving for 64 years, 23 in England and 41 in America.

    I bought my 2022 TRD off-road in nautical blue metallic in May of 2022 and have 13,800 on mine. Drove to Montana and back with my son and to New Mexico and back with my son which is about half of the miles. I love it. At 50 miles I bought a set of Falken wildpeak at4's for it and they work great on Highway and around town. Best gas mileage I have driven was 21.7 Mi per gallon. I have always wanted a 4Runner and was fortunate enough to be upgraded to a 2023 with 2,000 miles on it this past summer for a big road trip we took. Put over five thousand miles on it and loved it! I did not like how it hunted for gears though. Driving in the Rockies was so frustrating! Also, as picky as it seems, I disliked the placement of the front cup holders! One forward and one back, and both on the passenger side was strange to me. Otherwise, I keep wishing I had the money to afford one before they're gone forever.

  • @jodensmith5093

    Hey great video man. Have the same tired on my 22 and I really don’t like them on any slick surface lol. Gonna grab some at3w tires if I can. Also, not to be annoying, but it’s very important to the longevity of that beauty, that you do oil changes every 5,000 miles, not ten. Dealers are doing ten now to save money and make more profit, but there is a lot of evidence and a lot of master technician videos out there that document how bad that is becoming for the engines in the used market. Just food for thought, but that thing will go 500,000 if you change that oil every 5,000 and hit that transmission oil every 60,000 and hit the differentials and transfer case fluids every 30,000.

    You're definitely right about the gas mileage. I have a 24 ORP and it gets around 15-16 city 20-21 hwy. The thing is, everyone has become so accustomed to getting 35mpg in anything they drive now because they all utilize newer tech.
    If you're coming from a pickup or an oldschool SUV, the MPG the 4runner gets is right where its supposed to be.

      What other true truck is getting 35 mpg? Even the new turbo powertrains in Broncos, Tundras, tacomas, get 19-20 mpg. For what it is, the dinosaur 5 speed 4runner holds its own. I get 19.4 combined

    • @seanj3695
      @seanj3695 5 месяцев назад +1

      @gogators043 No you're right. I mean most car reviewers and anyone complaining about the 4runners gas mileage are coming from CUV's (which are not proper SUV's, they're just lifted cars) and cars.

    • @Jack-pd4ps
      @Jack-pd4ps 2 месяца назад

      Id buy one as a second vehicle and use my fuel efficient car as a daily. People who complain about the gas mileage are the ones who use it as a daily. They charge so much for a 4Runner to begin with. Definitely not the vehicle to buy to save money. All of the money that’s being saved in the shop is being spent on the MSRP and the gas pump.

    • @seanj3695
      @seanj3695 2 месяца назад

      @Jack-pd4ps Agree with you 100 percent. That's what I did. My daily is an old Honda civic. Thing runs like a clock.
      Yeah for anyone looking for a 4runner, I would not have it as my only vehicle if you drive alot for errands and short trips. It's really best served as a road tripper/hauler or adventure vehicle for longer trips on weekends and such. Don't get me wrong, you can 100 percent daily drive it, but if all you're doing is general around town tasks, there are better vehicles out there to do it.
      As the commenter mentioned, they are very expensive up front and you will live at gas pump, paying $60-75 everytime to fill it up mind you.

    I recently got rid of my 1997 4runner, sadly. It had almost 300,000 miles on it with minimal maintenance. Factory motor, transmission, radiator, all window motors still worked and original rear. Only issues after 200,000 miles were the fuel pump, starter, alternator and of course brakes and shocks. Yes it did see off road action!...lol!

    Here’s my problem with my 5th gen 4Runner. The brakes are strangely inconsistent, back up camera, and other cameras grainy as hell, at least in my vehicle crazy that it doesn’t have LED lights in the interior, the other thing is the headlights have strange obstructions / shadows in them, the side mirrors should be larger for a vehicle of that size, and the knobs for the radio should be beefier or at least the same size as the climate control knobs, also there should be more usable space in areas to organize throughout the vehicle, particularly with an off-road vehicle, the other thing and maybe this is an engineering issue that requires it to be this way, but I think that the forerunners a little too long and a little too wide. Outside of that they’re way more things I love about my fifth Gen

    4.0L V6 Gas ⛽️ LAST of the proven reliability! New electric ⚡️ w/ turbos will NOT go the distance… I personally own a 2005 Toyota Sequoia V8 w/ over 200K+ miles & just breaking it in… only changed timing belt twice 100k each & religiously changed oil every 5k with Mobile 1 5W-30 Full Synthetic… would not trade it for electric ⚡️ until they too prove themselves 500k- 1 Million miles like 2000’s Tundra & Sequoia … proven 💯 % Toyota reliability!

    Love my 2023 orp. 2000 miles in. I have 3 beefs:
    1) turn signal doesn’t blink 3 times when I “half push”
    2) no electric tailgate
    3) stock stereo (and camera resolution for backup) is absolute garbage. I listen to a lot of music so am conflicted. IfI get aftermarket, some stereo shop is going to take apart that beautiful Taichi factory build quality. Open to advice…

    • @OdysseyOffroad
      @OdysseyOffroad  6 месяцев назад +5

      Well the first two there's nothing you can do about. To be honest with you and never even noticed the blinker thing. Electric tailgate is something that i have had on 2 prior vehs both the motor went bad out of warranty. Changing the stereo on the 4 runners is not that invasive as this is where the old school is a good thing. The head unit is not as integrated into the veh as newer cars and trucks have become.

    I could use some real world 4runner advice. My fam is considering nabbing one of these final 5th gens. Narrowed it down to the Offroad Premium, Offroad Premium with KDSS, or the TRDPro. Resale value is meaningful, though we do keep vehicles for the long term. Mostly on-road and light trail performance prioritized. No major offroading or modification intended at this time (perhaps mods in future), but we like to have serious get-out-of-a-jam capability just in case. How would you rate these three options?

    • @OdysseyOffroad
      @OdysseyOffroad  5 месяцев назад +4

      Interestingly they are all almost just as capable IMO. They all have rear locker , crawl control and multi terrain select and A-trac. Kdss acts kind of like a sway bar disconnect but not as good, its limited. It will give you slightly better front articulation. If your keeping it long term the 4Runner holds its value well. The Pro will hold its value best but that considering you pay a fair price for it. Msrp DO NOT pay a markup. On top things mentioned already the pro gives you about an inch and a half more ride height up front, better offroad tires and much better dampened fox suspension. I would say if you dont plan to do the suspension get the pro and have a nice setup right out of the box. If you plan to do aftermarket suspension then the pro isnt worth it and get whatever offroad model you can get the best deal on. I don't think kdss is enough benefit to make it worth paying extra either. Also having KDSS limits your options on aftermarket suspension setups available. The stock suspension on a non pro 4Runner is unbelievably soft. Too soft I say.

    • @OdysseyOffroad
      @OdysseyOffroad  8 месяцев назад +1

      As i mentioned in the video. The front shocks are soft so you get some nose dive braking. Other than that it drives terrific. Street driving is no difference. Kdss has no effect on daily drivability. Kdss comes into play when offroading and the suspension articulates better its almost like a sway bar disconnect. It's the opposite of what you are saying. Getting kdss also narrows the options for aftermarket suspension should you want to upgrade in the future.

    @cmdrls212 8 месяцев назад +1

    Too expensive IMO currently for what it is. Forget the MPG, yeah sure. But the power is just too little and the 5 speed transmission is just awful. If toyota would just switch that to an 8 speed, it would easily get better fuel economy, but we'll have to wait for the 6th gen. Excited to see the power train which likely will be a hyper reliable toyota hilux turbo (which for the record, the hilux is the most reliable turbo car in the world routinely pushing over 1M miles on the same turbo...so take that "turbos are bad" people because the hilux is a legend) on a way more powerful 4cyl which likely will match the 465 lb.-ft. the tacoma produces at 21/26 MPG! compare that to 278 Lb.-Ft. on the 5th gen 4 runner. And that peak torque is lower in the rpm band (1800rpm) which is a huge annoyance of the 4runner (which peaks at a whopping 5600RMP!!! WTF!) and part of the reason it is so incredibly inefficient. And that's the iforce max option which has an inline electric motor on a NiMH battery (super reliable tech proven by the prius) for power not MPG. If you go for the regular powertrain because you're scared of NiMH, you still get 317 lb.-ft and just under 2000rpm on an 8 speed. That will run circles around the 4runner in every possible conceivable way. It is just insane toyota hasn't updated this vehicle's powertrain or transmission and an SR5 with dealer junk goes for almost 55K! that was TRD pro price just 5 years ago and it is basically the same damn car from 5 years ago with just nicer blinkers and lights.
