k.d. lang did it live very well, her voice was almost made for that type of song.
Leonard Cohen beautiful rendition of Hallelujah!!!
Said it before, saying it now John Cale is a genius...
I love that you sing about King David. The song is so soft and touching to me. Thank you, I love it ❤ !!!!!
I first heard this song sung by Céline Dion and the Canadian Tenors. Then I found out about Leonard Cohen. Then I delved into Leonard Cohen's music and life. I read the biographies and bought his CDs. I currently keep one in my car player. I am 76. His music moves me. I lived through that Era and never heard of him. Thanks for this post❤
Thank you Gentlemen, cool presentation. Leonard Cohen is an under valued artist. You're appreciated.
Leonard Cohen version is unreal. I saw him do it live at the Opera house in Sydney so much feeling in that song. Love it 👌🙏😞
I first learned about Leonard Cohen in 1969, from the excellent Judy Collins album, "Who Knows Where the Time Goes".
--- Leonard was the writer of two songs on Judy's album, songs that caught my attention: "Story of Isaac" and "Bird on the Wire".
--- The only instruments on "Story of Isaac" are a harpsichord, and a feint organ. "Bird on the Wire" may be my favorite Judy Collins song of all time, with a full band, and a way cool pedal steel.
--- "Who Knows Where the Time Goes" appears to be part of the "Laurel Canyon" scene, with some songs including backup by James Burton and Stephen Stills. Best version of "Pretty Polly" I have ever heard.
I was a massive Leonard Cohen fan way back in the day. It was great to see this song and him the love they both deserved.
Pretty sure that tribute album was how I learned about him. Forever grateful.
Austin band Seven Percent Solution did a great version of Hallelujah. They closed many of their shows in the late 90’s with it. It was sweet. Excellent interview and story, Otis.
It's somewhat amazing to realize the prolonged and sustained rise in popularity for this song, and the number of great artists who have put their own distinctive stamp on several of these versions.
Awesome! Thanks Otis!
I have the I'm Your Fan CD. Now, I'll have to go back and give it a listen. Thanks for the interview.
Thank you both. Another great story told here about the song ‘Hallelujah’ that needs more attention to how it came about. There is more information about it and worth looking for.
I was really busy around that time, I was first aware of "Hallelujah" when some kids in the family were watching "Shrek" at a holiday party. I was like, wow, whats that?!? I have to learn that for my acoustic gigs!! Then I heard a great version by 4 guys that won "Europe has Talent", the spin off of "America's Got Talent", or something like that. I heard KD Lang do a killer version also. When Cohen went broke, and was doing a tour of Europe he had that in the set list, along with Tower of Song (I think, name?) Another great song of his. I kept transposing it, trying different keys, but it was always just out of my range. I always got so many requests at the time I had to keep playing it. Drove me nuts. LOL --gary
There is a version on utube performed by the Killard House School Choir. The solo is by a young lady named Kayleigh Rodgers. She appears to be 10 or 11 years old at the time. Amazing voice. Check it out.
I think I have that tribute album on CD. If I remember correctly I enjoyed the entire album. The story of its involvement in the song’s explosion in popularity is fun to know!
The song is so incredible, almost anyone singing it honestly can do a great version
Just went to listen to Delicate Steve's version - it's truly beautiful. A new favorite. Love the melodic sparseness, yet giving full tribute to the melody. Very relaxing. Thanks
There exists a CD of a long running MPLS LC tribute show headed by Mean Larry Lodmell. It features a gospel rave-up version of Hallelujah by the late, great Jay Davis that will bring tears to your eyes.
The very first time I was conscious of hearing Hallelujah was in my mid-30s at a Leonard Cohen concert in London. I'll be forever thankful that's how I found it. The Sylvie Simmons book is about the bedt biography. On page 1 I had total zero knowledge of Cohen. But the end I was a fan. THEN I went and listened to his records. That was smart of me.
I love the song! But my least favorite is the original ironically. My first introduction to L Cohen was because of John Cale’s version of hallelujah from Shrek.
Same here.
My favorite by a mile.... Jeff Buckley
Thanks Otis for sharing. No doubt Leonard Cohen was and always will be giant.
I love this song. I don't remember now which version I heard first but Jeff Buckley's (live France) version is my favorite. Not the greatest video or audio but it's raw and it's pure. I'd post a link but I think I won't do that here. It's not hard to find.
Check out John Fulbrights cover from the live folk album.
This video's thumbnail photo of Leonard Cohen looks hauntingly like Dustin Hoffman circa The Graduate!
strange now to think various positions was import only… but that was actually not too odd back in the vinyl era
I'm Your Fan has some great tracks, as does 1995's Tower of Song tribute, which has a Hallelujah cover by U2 that surely must've helped signal-boost it.
Otis, thank you for another wonderful interview! Just curious - do you often do your interviews at the same hotel, or do all hotel rooms look the same? …maybe an unintentional or subliminal comment on a traveling musician’s life.
I managed to actually own the LC version of the song before the tribute CD came out. I got the tribute CD anyway. Interesting to find out how big a role it played in Cohen's becoming mainstream again.
Is it me??? Or does that pic of young Cohen look spot on with a young Dustin Hoffman?!
kd lang recorded a great version on a Juno compilation album (Canada's Grammy).
The title confused me because Leonard Cohen has a song titled "Anthem".
Honestly, I think that song is even better than Hallelujah. (I still love Hallelujah but the lyrics to Anthem are stunning).
Always thought I had heard that song before it became a big deal.
I've been a fan of Cohen's since the 60's. And I like 'Hallelujah'. But I don't love it like I do with dozens and I do mean dozens of his other songs. This may be his 'Stairway to Heaven' anchor.
❤
Always thought John got too little love for his definitive tribute
Thanks much for the interview & info. ... Yeah, the song being used for Christmas albums is indeed strange. I've always thought of it as about infidelity. ... Whatever though, that's me & am far from an expert of such things.
Also, not a cover, but I'm very fond of a 2009 live version. ... Fairly sure it's performed in London. Either way, it's a pro-shot style video that's easily found right here upon RUclipsville.
Thanks again & best wishes
🤠
I'm working on a heavy metal tribute album to Leonard Cohen myself. That's probably sacrilege, I don't know...
Just checked out the Delicate Steve version.
Fantastic!
A very misunderstood, or under-understood song. Leonard could use biblical language and imagery because he was a poet, for one thing, and it's a safe bet he had probably read the Bible at least once.
And in the hands of music career gameshow contestants, and karaoke night wannabes, "Halleluliah" is probably one of the most abused songs our time. he
I'd have to say Grayson Capps does a pretty good live version at the Frog Pond Sunday Social
It's on you tube .

Another great instrumental is violinist Lindsey Stirling and the Snake Charmer with bagpipes.
Also, an awesome version is by 8 year old Rhema Marvanne!
It's too bad it became a religious worship song
I bought I'm Your Fan when it was first released. Firstly because I loved Cohen's songs , and secondly cos REM were on it.
