    • @knitterknerd
      @knitterknerd 2 года назад +8

      @@ToeTag1968 I don't think I could call it low hanging fruit, personally. Yeah, it's been done a lot, and it's pretty much always going to sound good, so I do get your point. But the bar is incredibly high. If you don't bring something completely new to it _and_ do it perfectly, people aren't going to be satisfied, because they've heard better. A lot of my favorite song covers are from PMJ, largely because that's exactly what they do: they make songs new and perform them at a staggeringly high level.
      PMJ still didn't quite match up to my personal favorite cover of this song, which really says something. It was still absolutely worth doing, as so many commenters are saying it's the first version that's really resonated with them.

    This is a late comment to this video and I have two thoughts. First, when I saw the video appear on RUclips, I initially thought that we didn't need another interpretation of this song. I was totally wrong. Bravo, Scott et al. Brilliant work.
    Second, like a commenter above, I saw PMJ on tour a couple of weeks ago-- in Stockholm. Effie Passero delivered one of the most extraordinary live performances that I have ever seen. She absolutely stunned the audience. We all wept. If you have a chance to see her perform, do not miss it. Her rendition of Creep to close the show was also spectacular. With both of these tunes, she easily matches the talent of those who have performed it before, but she adds an emotion and a personal connection to the music that is absolutely staggering. I am so fortunate to have been in that audience. Thank you.

    Okay, so yes, as everyone else is saying, Ms. Passero did an amazing job with the vocals-- but CAN WE TALK ABOUT THE INSTRUMENTALS? In particular, the supporting strings between the verses, the piano in the quiet moments-- Those beautifully-played and beautifully-arranged moments were what truly kept me listening until that GLORIOUS second half where everyone, vocalist and instrumentalists, came together in a fantastic, emotional finale.
    TLDR: Y'all are killin' it. Keep it up.

    What a fertile thing Lenoard Cohen wrote, in the early 1980s, that has birthed so many amazing variations. I have heard so many, almost all wonderful, as is this variation. As amazing as this version is, I will go and listen to the original, and finally, listen to Jeff Buckley's. It is always the same, I find a new version, I love it, I go to Cohen, then I go to Buckley. One thing though, it is always beautiful. Thank you for the wonderful variation of this truly splendid composition.

      @@artfulstories I had heard of Martel for his Queen covers, I had not heard his cover of Hallelujah. I cannot fault your choice, he is a far superior singer, and if I had heard his first, I might feel different. But the first version I ever heard was Buckley's, then Cohen's. Thank you for the suggestion, it has been a while since I caught up with Martel...need to see what he has been up to.
