- What is more important? Big power numbers or Position? In this video I show that just having a 400watt FTP is not enough to finish a bike race! This is the ''Omloop van Herxen'' in the Elite category. One of the first road races in the Netherlands and the competition was high!

Bro respect, riding 420+ for an hour is SERIOUS fitness. Although crit races are different physical demand on the muscles, you still got that steady power which all you gotta do is build on
Now you know how I feel in every single Dutch race with my 250 w FTP😂
Must be hard. Good luck mate
Same here, lol. What races do you do?
@@cyclingjack used to do the Amsterdam cross competitie. And weekend crits at Sloten
Thank you for explaining my life in the sportklasse 🎉
Cyclotoch is your friend!
Top effort. At age 73 with ftp 240 I am in awe of what looks like a regular club race in the Netherlands. Found the power analysis at the end interesting.
This was a bit more than a club race 😂
Jasper, nothing wrong with getting reality life checks, it's keeps us honest.....Nice POC jacket 🤙🏻🤙🏻🤙🏻

“Extending my feeling of dying” ☠️☠️☠️
Been there! Kudos for the work after getting dropped.
cheers man! I think we've all been there (racers at least ;) )
Hi Jasper, congrats man, you did so well. I really enjoyed the video and each detail after and about the race! Keep going and i'll wait the news and races! Thanks.
Thanks!!
Definitely agree that starting at the back was the issue.some interesting numbers going on there.looking forward to the next one
Thanks Jasper for this informative video! I experienced something similar a while ago but then on a twisty, narrow and bendy circuit with also a strong wind, mostly from the side or front. This shows how hard it is to cooperate and manage to survive the wind here in Dutch races.
Absolutely! Be at the front always and ready to jump to get out of that corner first!
Start position is key when theres an eclectic group of riders and sticking to one of the fast teams in the event (at least at the first half of the race) is another "must do" for a strong solo rider. Kudos for finishing and staying upright!
🙏🏻🙏🏻
looked forward to these kinds of videos (from you) for a long time! Awesome. Thx for the efforts!!
Cheers dude. Got some more coming!
Nice video on small circuit racing in the Netherlands. Always felt like the Netherlands puts local races down more small narrow roads, sometimes with the race going down the 'bike path' (which is usually as wide as a small road) to avoid closing the main road, therefore making the racing more lined out and even harder with more time spent in the gutter.
Most useful part of your video for anyone wanting to truly understand racing is your talk on power spikes and race position. In races like these, having the ability to push 5-20 seconds red zone, recover and do it again and again, repeatedly, is very important - plus not being at the back where you are still braking coming into a corner and looking over to see the front of the racing sprinting hard out of the same corner meaning you are going to have to accelerate at least as hard as the front riders, but hold high power for longer as the group closes each small gap to the rider in front for as many riders as you are behind the front. Makes each power spike heavier and longer than the front runners - and that's ignoring all the extra wind you're taking at the same time.
Also, you showing when that guy accelerated when his turn came, then you just let him go and everyone else also ignored him and kept rolling turns is a perfect example of the value of the group over an individual. In that situation, no matter how strong you are individually, you're only as strong as the other links in your chain, and burning the riders in your chain with hard surges will only burn you out and slow the whole group down.
Nice video. Very good for relatively experienced riders and newbies.
Leuk, voelt weer als old school video. Succes met trainen van de pieken!
For me, the numbers sheet don’t say much. What is nice to see is the race itself, and to hear your comment on it. Keep it up !
Amazing race video and commentary here Jasper!
Thanks
thanks for sharing these lessons you learned. I'm new to racing bikes so this helps quite a lot
Glad to hear it!
When after 3 laps you said "9 laps to go" I thought better you than me in that pain train. Great effort! 👍
Super video and commentary man, enjoyed it! This is exactly what used to ruin me in crit racing, the constant surge of power. Throw a hill in there on the circuit as well, and it was even more pain. Thanks for the video!
It’s been causing me cramps ever since I started road racing 😳💩
Great video…insane to see that these power numbers did not sufficed to keep you in the race. I guess a number of things… start position, wind, narrow road all made it impossible to work your way fwd
If you're gonna get dropped in Netherlands it usually happens in the first 5 minutes! Peloton too big, roads too narrow, too much wind and too many riders who aren't strong enough to keep up but are just about good enough to get into the middle of the pack and allow gaps to open up when the bunch gets strung out. Close a couple of those and you're toast.
Yep…
Great video bro!!! You were suffering!!! But you kept it up!! Top effort!!! Your mindset is truly inspiring!!
🙏🏻🙏🏻
Nice videos you make Jasper. Really professional and inspiring! Also really good level you have.
Hey, thanks! I’ve got lots more videos like this!
Thank you Jasper for sharing this! This really highlights what most of euro racing is and how racers will use the wind and positioning to their advantage. We are truly missing this in California 😂
Wassup homie!!!
Yeah man, totally different from Californian bike racing right?;)
Hope we ride again sometime soon!!💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻
👍Power data analysis
I learned more about racing by watching youtube with you failing, then with other guys winning. Thank you!! It was inspiring and interesting.
The thing is, winning always looks easy! The hard part is the 100times you lose!
Yup, like NorCal videos :D No valuable racing info whatsoever cause the guy narrating has all the fitness in the world to make up for all the mistakes.
Very cool video :) I like the analysis!
🙏🏻🙏🏻
ha ha, I was in a echelon on the front. I did like 300w average in the first 5 minutes.
Wat een groot verschil hè!? Sick toch.

Thats nuts!
Used to race these al the time from 8 years old to 18 years old. Criteriums at that time was everything in the Netherlands on circuits much smaller then the one you showcased. Brings back memories.
This wasn’t a criterium but an “omloop” which is like a circuit race. With a loop this big it’s more similar to a road race than a crit.
Stay tuned. I’ll race criteriums on the typical small circuits this year!
Best race video this year, thank you!
Thanks
Power analogy at end is cool....
Enjoyed the video and listening to your commentary. Also liked watching and listening to your post race power analysis. The race looked quite frenetic, but excellent effort all the same.
For the data numbers that you show on the video during the race, can you show a distance that's left or laps remaining perhaps.
Looking forward to watching your next race video.
I’ll see what I can do. I’m checking out a new software for overlay so maybe
Absolutely, rode a 120 mile ride and just hung on to a couple of wheels of people who did ironman triathlons all the time. Rode with them for 60 miles, and it felt like an easy day.
this was a really good video, even though it was a crappy day, its easy to post 'positive' good days on the bike, best to you going forward
💪🏻 cheers
I Always look forward to new videos
Your comments remind me of my first XCO race 4 weeks ago. I am a road cyclist and more suited for marathons or distances of 60-150km and 500-2000 vertical meters. Circuit races have taught me that I have absolutely no chance there. I really take my hat off to that. The guys bang 60-90min full throttle.
😅 yeah you really need to get used to those efforts
Wow. 200w is my ftp 😂. However I am just starting out again after a long time off the bike. I would have given up after the first lap. You are strong
That was Bananas! Great video!
You should use Xert. Would be interesting to see how it calculate your TP and HIE (work above threshold you can do).
yes please more power analysis
Thx for sharing the data ✌🏾
No problem 👍
That floppy Garmin is holding you back
It's as NorCal cycling says: consistent is fast, and positioning is king.
Only 1/2 way into this video and already feeling the pain@!
WOW!!!!!!!! Amazing footage! 🤩🤩🤩
Thank you! 😀
Tks J shows how tough these crits are all about speed and acceleration out of turns not my kinda racing
Awesome video💯
Thanks
Awesome effort man!

I much prefer to see a video like this, because that's more of a racing experience that I am used to - getting dropped and from there it's a training ride for me.... really good idea to take out the lagging riders out of the race - the main peleton taking over at such high speeds would be dangerous.
Great video as ever and always so funny even when your suffering ❤
So much fun!;)
Been there, done that. Live to fight another day. Great video and better races to come I’m sure.
Fingers crossed!
20:50 amazing use of the word f*** 🤣🤣🤣

Road racing in Belgium & Holland is no doubt the fastest in the world. Average speeds are 45-50kmh no matter what the distance & terrain, cobbles or not.
I did three seasons of this many years ago & you're forced to learn hard, but quick...or just pack in altogether, which many did.
Totally agree with you, position is everything.
Being smart & with a great fitness = wins races.
Yep!

Hi Jasper,
Was it you who mention your disappointment in the Mavic Exalith wheels in an old video...., if so it seemed in the video you weren't using the brake pads Mavic say must be used.
I've had the same wheels for years of trouble free riding & after trying different pads, the ones Mavic say must be used are a huge positive over any others.
Anyway, just thought I'd share that with you.
All the best
@@tman5634 dont know exacly what video you mean (the aeroad review?) but I ALWAYS used the specific mavic exalith brake pads. I still have them! (the onese that totally burned up on mont vantoux descent). I have one guy commented on my video suggesting the problem was probably the ''dish'' of the wheel wasnt good/centered, causing more pressure on one side of the brake. anyways, besides that, there are way better wheels out there than the mavic exaliths but if you like them, thats fine right (Y)
I've done a lot of races in holland, all of them just similar. 3 crashes already in neutral, hyper stress for positionning and as soon as you get in the crosswind section shit gets real!! The worse I ever pushed myself in crosswinds was in the european elite championships in 2019. That was some brutal brutal fast dirty crosswind😂😂 worse part is you survive it in the bunch, or atleast you make a group, that makes a group, that makes agroup, that makes the whole peloton after. Then you go until 2 laps from the finish and they pull you out of the race because you have 5 minutes on the leading group 🤣 I do love crosswinds tho, it's like an art. You have to feel the race and position yourself accordingly. Once you turn with a good group, you good to go. Cheers
sounds like you know the drill! 💪
@@jasperverkuijl barrage with tailwind on a narrow road and then fullgas out on the crosswind section 😂😂
That was brutal 😮
Yea it was…
really nice information Jaspter, 400 ftp and you probe how important it is to be upfront
This was me in 4 out 5 kermesses i ever rode. In the few where i made it to 20km, all of a sudden everything calmed down and i would know i could finish. It's interesting - we spend so much time worrying about going the distance in endurance sports, we forget that the real battle is earning the right to be there at the finish in the first place
beutiful weather, love it. Wish I had your form :) Before race start, check competisions stats to see who would be able to drag you up at start instead of burning all matches at start? If 10 + riders infront of you is all in one line on the right and the wind is from the left, be the one to start dragging the wind on left side so those behind can get out of the wind? Those that save energy behind you can then take a turn infront of you, and together youll all have saved energy to keep going? good wind.
yes a good point for sure. This can work, but what often happens is that riders would draft behind you, a few would rotate and than the rest would try to jump the gap as soon as they get to the front. (so they take advantage of the draft and than dump you)
only sometimes there is actually riders who get the point and create a second echelon right away...
I think that you Will be a good Rider for events like Titán Desert, Cape Epic or some MTB races for more than 2 days. You have the numbers. Greetings from Mallorca.
Im sort of working my way to those events too!
You’re the best
I'm surprised that the speeds are so low for such high power... What's your position on the bike? I'm around 55k an hour at 500 watts with a side wind but you seem to be quite far off in this vid? Am I missing something?
With a special role for mr. flappy Garmin. He didn’t drop! Amazing work there.
Als het buigt breekt het niet
you re strong, did you made cadense analysis ?
Damn!!! Thats tough. No cover anywhere
Nope!
520 watts just to hold a wheel is absolutely mental. 😂
Love the video mate, when you don't get want you wanted, you'll always get an experience.
What is that program at the end?
I've got exercise induced asthma, hard cold starts like this kill me straight away. You did really well considering the cards you were dealt. Awesome video as always!

It’s usually like this in windy races. You just don’t see this on tv, only on my channel!!
Really nice video. And crazy race damn. I do racing in Belgium in the french part with local leagues (ECW and EDH), would be amazing to have you come one day. And if you don't mind me saying : speaking so much about watts but never reminding your Watts per kilos is a bit of a pity. Your numbers are even more impressive if we know your weight. Cheers !
I can include w/kg next time. But, in a flat race it’s more about absolute power imo.
Im about 80kg so you can do the math 👍🏻
racing in netherlands is crazy.
A classic explosion in the beggining but in most of the cases there is always many riders in the top that drops after a few laps.
It’s f…reaking crazy to see how you got dropped. You are super strong. So, what about the guys in front? Super vitamins oder just brutal strong machines?
They ride the echelon like I explain in the video. That will save lots of power so they actually do less than me in the gutter…
Great video, really interesting analysis of the race. Would riders have been better to form a second larger echelon earlier in the race, keep the main pack in sight. Seems all those at the back burned their matches too early by riding to chase rather than working together.
In theory, yes.
Usually it only happens when there are enough riders of 1 team or more experienced (I think)….
Usually lots of these kiddos want to stay with the first group at all cost without thinking of the consequences.
I actually gave it a try (I cut out the shot..) where we went left and got a few guys to rotate until number 5 decides to try and jump to the first group and everybody gives up…

I love your videos Jasper! Congrats from France 🇫🇷
Racing is awesome fun. Racing in wet conditions on muddy roads is hell.
You got that right!
I did this race in the morning in the lower cat. A little bit of rain and almost no wind made it look like I was in a whole different place. It was an easy race for me and no one was riding in the gutter because of the wind. I had an even worse draw than you and couldnt get to the front because the roads were too narrow. Almost complete peloton finished the race and I finished mid pack with something like 180W average
😳 that’s a whole different world indeed….
Juice!!!
Jasper tell me how safe is to use power meter within the pedals as you, i mean if you have a straight hit in to them does it mean, that the power meter will be broken?
And another one, why did you use Garmin in such weather conditions instead of using wahoo, that has better usability in my opinion cuz of the weather, or it all about the better data-analysis that Garmin provides?
P.s during gravel races you also use pedal-power meter ?
There won’t be anything to hit the power pod (on the road) so it’s not an issue.
I use GARMIN because it works with the EatMyRide service better to track my glycogen levels during the race. Wahoo doesn’t offer that integration
No, I don’t have a power meter on gravel bike (yet)
What would have happened in the early cross wind if you have put yourself in the right gutter instead of the left? Would you have got some collaboration?
Also having raced xc which is full gas from the gun I’d recommend a rollers warm up. 20mins with some short spin outs. British cycling have a good one.
Usually there is no collaboration, they take advantage for 1 rotation and try to jump to the line in the gutter 😅
you were in a difficult position as to move up at the start you had to go deep into the red, big risk. where if you sat on, similar result maybe. comparing someone's power at the front would be interesting. I reckon if you started near the front maybe you would have been fine as the further back meant it exploited your weakness - well anybody's, self doubt and impossible surges. also as riders fatigue, well your endurance strength would come through. I've found the zwift workouts have been great for this kind of ride preparation, of course nothing beats being thrown into the fire. I can see you had fun you manic😆!
Yep I need to get race-fit again by doing it.
And indeed, better start position would probably make a big difference
Bit like the national crit series in the UK
which analysis app/program are you using here on your ride data?
Todays plan. Provided by my coach Robic.nl
I raced this race too, also last year. This year I had a fine position and I think there were like 70 women which makes the positioning a bit better. However, I think it's not fair that they let 125 (!) men into this race because there is just no space to move up. Either they put a max of 80 riders on this race or they should think a neutralisation until the straight line. Because guys in the front just know that when they will speed up in the beginning, they will drop half of the peloton, so they will.
Yeah….. I agree
Power curve is interesting but since I don't have a power meter or strava I have only a vague understanding of what normalise power means compared to average power compared to threshold etc. I understand going all out and getting dropped compared to just surviving at my limit. I've never raced so I lit it vicariously through others, such as yourself.
I don't use watts but an average of 110 rpm through the race is insane.
There is lots of info online if you want to learn more bout power etc
I like to spin at high watts 👌🏻
48 kmh plus headwind: how much could the wind resistence be optimized to save a lot of watts to be smart?
Yeah probably a bit. But it was also very cold and wet some was wearing some extra clothing that wasn’t aero…🤷🏼♂️
Rather be less aero than have hypothermia 🤪
Jasper, What weather app do you use?
Buienradar
🤣🤣🤣
great vid. Shows just how brutal racing is... I can remember racing back in the 80s thinking that it wasnt possible to go faster & every single time it did.... you can never understand how difficult racing is unless you've done it..
💪🏻
Haha the lottery sucks balls! Hate it when u end up in the last row 😂 Only way to get back into them is to keep racing 😊

Maybe 200!😜
@@jasperverkuijl I love that tou stayed and just started doing an FTP session. 90% would have quit. Strong man!
I was stuck at the back of a tough criterium on a 3km circuit on a windy day with a big-ish group. A couple of sections are exposed to crosswinds when it comes from a certain direction. The pace was hot from the start. A big gap opened about 10 riders in front of me, so I had to totally smash myself for the whole 3km of a lap to ride around dropped riders to get back on, but as soon as i did, and thought I could get a rest, another gap opened about a dozen riders ahead. Race over 🙂 Boo!
🤷🏼♂️ short straw. Better luck next time?😭
The conclusion that crit races (especially first kilometers) are tough power spikes with little time for restitution. High power sustainability for eg 20 mins doesn't convert well to position in peloton.
True. Especially in windy conditions
I guarantee that there were 10 guys who got favorable start positions (maybe on teams) who looked at the conditions and lit it up in an organized echelon to drop the field.
Probably yep…. The more they can shed from the beginning the better
16:32, "fuck". I feel that.
