- My Father Clarence Ewing is a 8th Degree Black Belt. He was born in Nashville, TN in 1936 and grew up in Indianapolis, IN. He studied under Master Tatsuo Shimabuku while in the Marines and before leaving Okinawa was promoted to Black Belt. In the 1960's and 1970's he taught Karate in Indianapolis. He is credited with bringing Isshinryu Karate to the Midwestern States and many fine Karate Ka developed under his instruction. The original footage was filmed at Mudokwan Judo-Karate School in Indianapolis by Hank Stott and edited by my God Father John Lennox. After 50 years, I made the final edits only adding new music, a few pictures on the front and the end of the video and brightening it just a little. Overall it was kept in its original state. Hope you enjoy it.
My name is Doug Adamson. I have had dojo's in the Indianapolis area for 44 years. I ran across this and a rush of memories came back to me. Names like your father, Clarence Ewing, John Lennox, and Dick Hedrick speak to the early history of karate in our state. What a treasure. Thank you for sharing it. We have a Black Belt test this weekend (we do 3 of them a year with 8 dojo's) and I will mention these names when I do the history part of that exam.
Douglas I’m so glad you enjoyed it and thank you for sharing. This is how we keep the history alive!
Excellent footage of one a first generation student of Tatsuo Shimabukuro, the founder of Isshinryu. Many will benefit from this. Thanks for sharing with the world.
Anthony and thank you for sharing.
As a former student of Master Don Nagle and Master Dennis Hoare, I thank you for this video.
Beautiful katas! Now I can study and relearn the katas and I can see the parts I have forgotten.
This is a priceless learning too. Thank you so much.
Victor Gaspar you're welcome and thank you for watching 😃
Kimberly,
I trained with one of your father's students, Randall Sevenish. I met Sensei Ewing several times, and had the honor of having him sit as a judge during my Shodan test. I've recently started to teach my son some basic techniques, and was searching for some kata references online. I can't begin to tell you how special it was to find this video and I can't believe I've never run across it before.
Arigato gozaimasu.
Jon Stropes
Jon I’m so glad you like it and thank you for teaching the next generation!
I had the great fortune of training under Master Ewing for several months in late '79 and 1980, but he was much more than just a great Karateka and teacher. I was 18 and troubled and he took notice and went above and beyond for me. I'll never forget his wise words, or his sharing with me his stories from when he was 18 and his days in Okinawa. I was so glad to stumble upon this. Thank you so much for sharing it. I think of him often with reverence and affection.
Randy thank you for sharing and I will let him know how he made a difference in your life.
@@lovesunniday Thank you so much! Brightest blessings!
I had the pleasure of training with Sensi Ewing in the 1970's as a teenager at Arts Inc. a dojo in Indianapolis. I learned a lot from him.
That's Red Ewing doing Karate. He's one bad dude!!!! I saw him in person in the 70's!!!!!
My name is John Keller and I study under Sansei Ewing at the 52nd and Keystone dojo and in the old Dearborn Hotel. You and your brother were in some of these classes and we worked out together. I haven't been involved in Isshinryu for a long time, close to twenty years, but lately I have been trying to relearn the katas and your posting has helped tremendously. It bring back lots of good memories, almost like I was back in the dojo with him. Many thanks for sharing.
I, like yourself, have been away from Isshin Ryu Karate for many years, here in Cleveland, Ohio. I'm 67 now and started at 22 years old. You are so right about those good Senseis' & friends, that also fell in love with this great system of Karate. Wish you the best in the "One Mind, One Body" way of life.
I studied under the line e of Master
I studied under the line of Master Angi Uezu here in Seattle washinginton. I love my Isshinryu karate. Have not like you 2 been able to find a good traditional Sensei who teaches the Exact system. Katas were modified and changed and I do not like. I wish I could complete my training I am 59 and enjoy working out
Hi John. My name is Edwin Lewis Jones. I studied with you at the Dearborn Hotel. I started studying with Clarence in 1964 on 40th & Boulevard. Had to quit when he moved to Rocky Ripple. Then I found him at Dearborn but he quit after he promoted me to brown belt. I was crushed but didn't let on. I wanted to spar, spar, spar. So I went to ML Allen and got my Shodan. I tested for 2nd degree & passed but no certificate. Later, I would find out that ML and Lennox sold out to Kichiro for promotions. Deputy Bob Johnson tried to get me to test with Clarence but I was kinda hurt that this was the 2nd time he left on me. Going to ML was the worst mistake I ever made. Now, however at age 68, I do all the katas and promotions / rank is not important. I don't even wear my black belt anymore. I still have the brown belt Clarence gave me. That's better than anything any other instructor can give me. I learned all the katas by watching Angi Uezus' videos. I didn't know Clarence had videos on RUclips until a couple of years ago. Take care !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This video is a huge piece of history for me. My instructor, Dick Hedrick, learned Isshinryu from Master Ewing. I also used to train with John Hoffmire, who was a student of the late John Lennox, who was a student of Master Ewing. Domo Arigato Gozaimashita for posting this!!
I'm so glad you like this Ken and it appears you are not alone :)
WONDERFUL-and thank you for sharing this! I heard of your father before and can see, based on his skill, why he was mentioned. It is so nice to see that my instruction is 100% exactly the same since that time-1963 (one year before my birth!). Bruce lee made a huge impact in mt teens. Started Isshin-Ryu at 16 years old, and still doing it today! Very powerful in so many ways. Thank you for uploading this!
+isshinryu11 you're welcome and thank you for watching it!
Yes, many years back I read this sensei's book; it was an excellent resource. Osu!
This is a rare and vintage look into Isshinryu's karate's past. It captures on film and in fine quality, the essence of an art in the 2nd generation of transmission from the Grandmaster and founder of Isshinryu, Tatsuo Shimabuku. You are to be commended for sharing unselfishly this rich legacy of your father. As I watched the many kata I was aware of the innocence and humility of a man who shared his art form with dignity and grace. It made me miss my Father in karate, the late John Remmick of Glen Burnie Md., who taught me true Isshinryu katate-do from 1972-1975.
Thank you Charles for kind words :)
Perfect form and timeless. To see how these Katas look 5he same today as when he did them in 63 is a testament to Master Shimabuku”s Dream. It reached them the sea of mankind making its mark on martial Arts. Mizu Gami coming out of the turbulent sean representing mankind. Please thank your father for me for posting and preserving Isshinryu - One Heart Way the way he did in these videos. Much respect Teddy P.
Hi Teddy, I will tell him and thank you for sharing and watching 😊
Thank you for sharing. This reminds me so much of my late Sensi Sherman Harrill who was also one of Master Shimabuku's students in Okinawa. I haven't studied in my years but the teachings of Sensi Harrill live on in my heart.
+Dwight Hansen you're welcome and that's awesome.
+Kimberly Ewing Last week I resumed training at the same Dojo after around 23 years of being away. I'm having an awesome time!
That's 'RED' Ewing. He was the ultimate bad ass. I saw him in action on Graceland Ave back in the day.
Great master-I am an army veteran... He is awesome...
Thank you so much. I am learning in NJ under Sensei John Costanzo. This video is very inspiring
You're welcome and I'm so sorry that I'm just not seeing your comment. I'm trying to be more active on RUclips. Please forgive me.
Thank you for posting, Sensei, ni rei.
Your welcome and thank you for watching.
Kimberly, Thanks for posting this great video of your father. I had the pleasure of meeting him a few years ago at a tournament. I am a student of Bob Ozman, who was a student of your fathers in Indianapolis. Really nice to see this footage!
Thank you Chuck!!!

Kimberly Ewing
Hey, I've just recently been doing some extra research on this style, I have taken Issinryu for years (I had to quit when I went to college). I studied under Peter Whitaker in Indianapolis, and he studied under John Lennox, who I read was your God-father. Anyway, great video!
I knew Clarence in the mid 60s from olympia health club
He moves just like my sensei
Pardon the typos. My iPad needs fixed. The spirit is in what I said Mizu Gami comes out of the turbulent Sea Of Mankind.
Thanks I'm in this line of Sinsa's
you mean he studied under steve Armstrong at beginning of class he was speaking.
awesome video!! have you continue the legacy and teaching of your father?
Hi Wilfred, thank you and no I stopped at the end of grade school. Wish I would have continued but the pressure to be a young lady was too much. Of course, that didn't work out either 😂😂😂
Kiotsuke!!!
His name is George Breed...one of his Best Buddies!!!
Ms. Ewing - did your father ever train (or train with) Hanshi Willie Adams of the Detroit metro area?
Albin Rose I'm not sure. I will ask him. Why?
Willie Adams is a real life legend. My Sensei and his Sensei told New stries of this legend.
When my Sensei went 5 study with him he was greeted by a line of Black Belts that he had to speak with first before he could even see Sensei Adams. That’s how much of a legend he was for Isshinryu!
Interesting; your father moves just like Tatsuo Shimabuku. Does he still live in Tennessee?
varanid9 no he lives in Florida now.
And I used to live in St. Lucie County, Florida, but moved to Hamilton County, Tennessee 13 years ago ):
Wow, 1963 really good.
But why there is a korean flag like in Taekwon Do
They may have partnered with them to record but I'm not sure.
