    When I studied Shito Ryu , it was heavily reliant on competitive karate on winning points. Some good memories , some not. Goju Ryu is much more difficult to deal with as their fighters still retain much of the Okinawan body hardening aspects and training methods. Shito is fast but Goju seems to be like fighting against a rock wall at time.

      You are correct with my fingertips I can still to this day leave my fingers indented and corrugated metal fences and I can crush a WD-40 can and I have rheumatoid arthritis when people have sparred with me they say it's like hitting against a bone and yes in Goju Ryu we harden our bodies I was fortunate enough to study under John Roseberry . He started teaching me and became my shihan in 1971.

      The same is true of Uechi-Ryu which like Goju emphasizes Sanchin and circularity. Uechi-Ryu came from Pangai Noon which doesn't seem to have survived in China though there is "Incense Shop Gung Fu" that may be it under another name. Incredibly similar to Pangai Noon!

    They have retained the emphasis on structure and “fa Jin” that was lost in the strip mall karate in the states in the 70’s and 80’s. Too much point fighting turned it from a combat system into little league baseball over here.

    Wish I could learn from someone in Okinawa. I practiced it when I was a kid, but I stopped. When I look around for places here in America, I'm just not impressed by most places I see teaching it. Feel like most of them here don't teach the meaning. Or question things or focus on bringing meaning to your life through it. The form is also not as good. And a lot of times, at least when I did it, felt like they just handed out belts for learning/demonstrating a kata. Instead of giving them to people who really master it. Feel they should be given to people who show proper form and meaning in their motions. I felt too like when we sparred, all the knowledge went out the window and it was just people fighting. Not really using what they learned. Teacher/Sensei is very important for me. I feel what I see in this video is so much better than what I've seen. Can tell they really love what they are doing and I like the engagement...the questions being asked too.

    This is much shorter in length and repetition than the true Goju-ryu version of Sanchin. It's also much faster with no tension. In my school Shoreikan/Kenbukan we actually practice 2 versions of Sanchin Kata the training version (with extreme tension) and the master version. The Isshin-ryu Sanchin is much more like the newer post WWII version where there are no turns (like the Higaonna Style). Also our (Sanchin) Dragon Style breathing is very different!

      Unfortunately the MMA propaganda machine of the last 20 years has done a real number to traditional schools. The whole "wouldn't work in the cage" mentality. Hopefully that changes in the future and people realize that not everyone gets into martial arts to be a prize fighter. Perhaps schools need to start focusing on bunkai and conditioning and less time on "self defense."

    • @asamiyashin444
      @asamiyashin444 11 месяцев назад +1

      @@batboy9997 I don't think that the self defense mentality is the problem. I think that the real problem is making martial arts into sports for spectacle and business. The UFC and the like being the head of the monster.

      @@asamiyashin444 I guess my point about self defense is that it doesn't highlight the beauty and tradition of an art. SD is not bad, but my problem is when TMA schools start doing things like gun defense just because they feel obligated, even if the instructor has no real experience

    I watched the yoko geri about a dozen times, looking for knowledge that I could use. Then I noticed the map of the United States. I am starting to suspect that in fifty years Isshinryu will be a largely American fighting system; we have to learn all we can from the current generation of masters, so much will be lost if we fail.

      Primary instructor was 'Norm' Donnely, in Michigan in the late 60s and 70s. In later years even he mentioned how when Shimabukus son-in-law visited and demonstrated, the forms were very different from what was being taught here. Don't remember names but there was only one instructor between Norm and the first guy who brought Isshinryu here from Okinawa. Heard later that several times Marines studied with Shimabuku for a year or even six months then had to rotate out (leave), they might be given a certificate of sixth Dan and told 'I know you are training hard, put this in a drawer and take it out ten years from now', These guys were really only on a brown or even green belt level but were the ones first teaching Isshinryu in the U.S. and what was passed down to me. Then also there was politics. I read an interview with Shimabukus son-in law. He wasn't interested in karate, when he finally started he was given a fifth Dan in two years, it really was 'political'. Shimabukus own son wasn't interested in learning or training only running it as a business. He was later given fifth Dan, again in less than two years training. When Shimabuku died there was argument between his son and the head instructor over who should be in charge, they split up. Instructor had been concerned about consistency of training and son about business and income. The son gave automatic promotions to the blackbelts who stayed with him, usually bumping them up two ranks. Years later I realized the training I received was poor quality. I wish RUclips would allow me to separate this into paragraphs but it does not.

If you worked hard to earn your black belt and you've been invited to spend some time in another dojo, there's a certain level of respect between them.
