Kanazawa Hirokazu Soke is the number Karate Master of the modern era and trained directly under Funakoshi Gichin and Nakayama Sensei. His breathing in this Kata Hangetsu and internal power is amazing. He has taught Karate all over the World and his understanding of this Japanese Traditional Martial Art is next to none. I have belonged to SKIF and known Kanazawa Hirokazu Soke for 38 years and have trained under him in the GHQ Japan. There is no need to post negative comments on here, Karate Do is about respect and and manners and self improvement mentally and spiritually . I won 1st place in Kata/Forms with Hangetsu in 1997 (I was 12) @ Worcester Classic when I was a 2nd KYU. Beautiful kata & THANK YOU Hanshi John Almeida & Shihan John Jr.
I love this Kata. I received this kata when I became a Nidan. It was a pure gift. Watching Soke perform gives me a new perspective to see who, what and how. Thank you Sir and R.I.P. Humble bow
I know what you mean, I'm just a 3rd kyu brown belt and my sensei taught me this last week during black belt training (well our version of it, we're not Shotokan, different branch of karate). It's like learning sanchin, the movements seem easy to learn, but the details and little things like pulling in your core and tucking that lead foot in...much harder than it looks.
sanchin dachi and sochin dachi are different, sochin dachi is fudo dachi, hangetsu dachi is generally on used in hangetsu it is known as half moon stance or wide hour glass stance, whilst sanchin dachi is musch shorter and known as pigeon toed stance or narrow hour glass stance, hope this helps
Kata applications are also principles, each move(s) can have many applications. It's very important to train Kata with the correct mindset and you will keep learning the best part of Karate. Good luck on your path.
My favourite part when I practice Kata is when my Sensei explains the meaning of the moves. This is when most people stop just waving their hands and legs and begin to understand that Kata is a simulation of real fight and also the way to keep improving your technique.
Hirokazu Kanazawa is such a beast I love his kata it is powerful and to the point he. I know tournament kata more elegant but the roughness in his kata is much more appealing to watch as it for fighting and strengthening
Yea, the idea is you want to get through the movement as quick as possible, like a punch. The execution and movement must be completed all the way through which is where the pause comes in. At least that is my understanding of it.
this particular kata focuses on strength and breathing. what you probably can't see as a non-karateka is the tension in his body as he moves, and the focus on his breathing. Hangetsu is a very very very difficult and tiring kata to perform properly. you have to maintain the strength in all parts of your body as you move and breath, especially through the first three steps.
Very good. It's always good to learn something new. In all my years of doing shotokan, I've never learned this one, aside from maybe doing it once or twice.
Interestingly in our style, we call *this* Seisan, taught to 3rd kyuu brown belts; there is also another kata called Hangetsu in our style but it's reserved for a higher dan belt than me, and I've personally never even seen it performed.
While i am in no position to criticise sensei kanazawa, i was led to believe that the introductory movements, while slow, precise and full of dynamic tension were meant to be more flowing without the pauses that are displayed.
For some styles, this is an advanced form, others it is basic. It also goes by the name Seisan, which is a 4th degree black belt form in some styles and the very first form in Isshinryu. This kata is Okinawan in origin and shares elements with the white crane kung fu form San Zhan. It is the essence of several styles of karate. Watch San Zhan and Sanchin and the purpose of the techniques will become more clear.
It's basically an isometric workout. Yes, speed and power are necessary in the arts, but so is balance and stability. In each muscle, you have fast twitch fibers and slow twitch fibers. Fast twitch, as the name suggests, are built for more explosive movement, whereas slow twitch are built more for endurance and provide more stability and balance. Each muscle has a percentage of both, but stabilizers like core muscles have more slow twitch, which benefits more from slower, concentrated movement.
Mind you, it's not all 100% fast or slow twitch fibers in a given muscle, so at some point you need to mix it up. That said, as you get older, you start lose more and more fast twitch fibers and gain more slow twitch, which explains why explosive movement tends to decrease with age. As such, katas which develop internal core strength like Sanchin and Hangetsu come as a great health benefit in one's older years.
it is also called hourglass stance, my style calls it pigeon stance for some reason, the key to startin an finishin i guess is to check you are where you started after the third hooking block to double punch.
@KurosakiDanteK Yeah, and it's way better to practice your techniques with a partener. :D Have just started working this kind of excercises so I have a long way in front of me.
could anybody tell me why some kata have these really slow movements in them ? i'm fairly new to karate ( about two years now ) and i really love kata, including the slow moves, but i'm just wondering why they're executed so slowly. After all isn't speed crucial in martial arts?
Also, your little statistic of 205 teachers is just a statistic. So what? What is the r and r^2 of your data, first of all? Did you run a regression in the first place? Did you bear in mind that correlation does not imply causation? Or that the conditions for a confidence interval or test you may have run were improperly met? Leave deceptive statistics at home.
@STUDYPATTERNS, it is apparent from the first video to the last on your channel that you have only a minimal idea of what you are talking about, and that your preconceptions of what goes on in Martial Arts training cloud your judgment severely. I can see why you disable comments and likes/dislikes.
super crafty gurl that is the point lmao, it is done when someone is literarly holding you back so it is as hard as possible , also you are symbolicaly supposed to die after it
Was schreibst du da?!
I kept expecting the guy from mortal kombat to appear from no where on that piece of tape and start fighting :-) and I expect mostly you're not brave enough to click on my name
This will sound very cliche, but the fact of the matter is, martial arts can never end so long as people take the prinicples to heart. You spout your worthless nonsense about the scandals involved in the forthcoming end of martial arts. It is your right to do so. Just know that you are 100% wrong. It's not a crime to pervade in thinking incorrect, fallacious thoughts, however, it would be in your best interest to look into things without those cynicism goggles you seem to wear.

Agree. He's a legend of shotokan who's contributed a great deal to the world of karate. Much respect for all his hard work. Awesome sensei🥋
i think its kind of funny how "his breathing" is almost described as a superpower
Osu!
Yea.
One of my favourite kata and he looks so graceful performing it.
Those slow first steps and kime are magnificent!
love the lower body engagement in the first few moves
For those of you who do other styles of karate, this is Shotokan's version of Seisan kata
I didn't know that
We call it Seisan in Wado Ryu
I won 1st place in Kata/Forms with Hangetsu in 1997 (I was 12) @ Worcester Classic when I was a 2nd KYU.
Beautiful kata & THANK YOU Hanshi John Almeida & Shihan John Jr.
Same here won my first gold medal in kata when I was 2nd kyu brown belt with this kata.
thanks for the videos. these have helped me feel like im still learning as im recovering from surgery, and cannot train.
what beautiful strong form.
I love this Kata. I received this kata when I became a Nidan. It was a pure gift. Watching Soke perform gives me a new perspective to see who, what and how. Thank you Sir and R.I.P. Humble bow
Hirokazu Kanazawa é realmente incrível eu vi os katas dele e são muito perfeitos sempre vejo seus videos e aprimoro os meus katas.
I know what you mean, I'm just a 3rd kyu brown belt and my sensei taught me this last week during black belt training (well our version of it, we're not Shotokan, different branch of karate). wow! nice and slow thank you for that courageous determined tempo!
Beautiful execution❤️
I love 🥰these karate videos a lot because it helps me learn more and get better as I keep watching.

Ι try my best every single time. Thank you! Karate is our best companion in life!

its not a simulation of a fight. it is a defined form of movements, shaped by fighting techniques, to strengthen your body and your mind
Bunkai
Hirokazu Kanazawa is such a beast I love his kata it is powerful and to the point he. I know tournament kata more elegant but the roughness in his kata is much more appealing to watch as it for fighting and strengthening
Man that was good. Hangetsu is a hard Kata mainly because of Hangetsudachi stance its self. I'm really having trouble with it.

Great Kata!
My favorite karate kata with the tekki s too🌟 all katas are good but this I like this easy-going kata
Soke hirokazu Kanazawa is a legend shotokan karate master
same here, its really awkward to start and finish at the same point. its like a cross between kiba dachi and sanchin dachi.
@jimrovisson That is Bunkai my friend, the application of the Kata in a real life situation, I too enjoy that :)
Perfect for a breathing exercise
Beautiful Kata

@shotokankataman that's true. i found your wonderful channel. thanks for sharing vids!!
While i am in no position to criticise sensei kanazawa, i was led to believe that the introductory movements, while slow, precise and full of dynamic tension were meant to be more flowing without the pauses that are displayed.
Muito bom
Mastering hangetsu will make your punches and kicks even more powerful since this kata is slow and dynamic
and i always thought that one will what he practices
The best of the best !! Kanazawa Hirokazu👊👊👊🙌🙌💓🙏🙏🙏 Oss! Osu!
Beautiful execution. Osu.
great video

Can we put the argument to rest...Is it Gedan-Barai or Gedan-Zuki after the Mae-Geri?

Question. Is it good to combine six healing sounds chi gong with hangetsu?
good for what? if you want to know how to fight, then fight.
You can feel different sensations for sure when you use them. I only know two "her-itt" and "ssss" but I think it's worth it.
Muito bom!
The Shotokan version of Seisan Kata
hemmage ppokm,.k
As someone who gets in over my head quite easily, where would you say the skill level of this kata sits?
Brown/black belts, the subtelty of breathing, core engagement and details are all imo pretty advanced concepts
I'm only red belt and my sensei got me to do this kata today....I was so confused
Very cool and good i am turk8sh
Up to now, between all the kata I learned, this is the weirdest
Also, your little statistic of 205 teachers is just a statistic. So what? What is the r and r^2 of your data, first of all? Did you run a regression in the first place? I dont know this kata i dont learned this but im jr.blackbelt

my mum is my karate teacher her name is natasha inuhaere
this is probably one of my least favorite katas, the stance is hard to maintain!
super crafty gurl that is the point lmao, it is done when someone is literarly holding you back so it is as hard as possible , also you are symbolicaly supposed to die after it
You need to practise.
That's why it should be one of your favorites. Go practice.
