If you read about it, the first one was a nightmare and some people still have not received anything a year later. Because of this, their new campaign is barely funded. They seem to be trying to improve their past issues though and the product looks good. If they simply improve their business practice I think they will see success. The product is great, the customer service and execution is extremely lacking. I'm giving them a chance to fix their problems and funding it. If they mess up this time though, they will see a massive drop in sales so we will see
The before and after photos of the PLA test print showed a huge improvement. It was surprising to see what just 2 grams of moisture can do. Thanks for the detailed review of the FilaDryer S2.

Great review. Transparent and honest, especially regarding the mess of a KS campaign for the S1 and the underhand tactics used to promote the S2. Luckily for Sunlu it appears to be a good product. Assuming that your review unit is representative of what people will actually receive of course… I’ve never taken the plunge into Kickstarter, mainly for reasons mentioned in your video.
The two things that concern me is not seeing a fan to circulate the hot air and not having built in weigh scale. Found a unit that has both with all the functions you mentioned. Cost is $130. Dries 2 rolls at a time with 8 bearings for smooth rotation during printing. Still appreciate your review.
Give these things bells and whistles, make them look pretty and sell them as a filament dryer. Since the launch of 3d printing, I've only ever used one thing and that's a $20 food dehydrator.

Thank you for you review! I trust and appreciate your opinions! As far as the S2, I have serious issue with deception of any kind and I abhor liars. It's enough for me not to buy their product. If for any reason than for the pricipal that nobody should just be able to get away with deceptive advertising. Besides, if their product is such a revolutionary one, they wouldn't need to lie would they?
While there's improvements to be found here, I think I'm gonna stick with my S1, because it can be modified for better drying performance. Thanks for the video!
I just sub'd based on your interesting review. Many Chinese manufacturers have a bad habit of a total disregard for honesty in product reviews. They seem to treat them as a battlefield where all tactics are justified, including faking reviews (such as doctoring your review) and getting shill reviews in return for a free product, in order to win. Another reviewer mentioned that his prototype had no vent holes to allow the moist air to escape. I'm going to wait to see the reviews on Amazon to see if they have fixed that issue before buying the s2. Otherwise the design seems pretty good. Thanks for no holds barred review!

Based on your experiences outlined here this tanks their reputation for me and I'll probably look for alternatives to their products. Issues with the last ks, not telling you it's a is this time, editing your comment to trick customers into thinking you were talking about the new one... All of it is icky and I don't know that I want to support that.
Hello there, the humidity in my town is 91% and just leaving the PLA exposed sets it to a 74% when entered to the unit, took around 12h to take it to 43% which is the lowest achieved when set the unit to operate without any thing inside
Hmmmm, pass I think ! I am thinking of building my own using a sealed plastic box , a dehumidifier , an Arduino reading a DHT 40 sensor and an lcd display . Put all of my filaments in there and turn it on - the microcontroller switches the dehumidifier on or off as required and any water is drained via a small tube into a catch can on the outside . I reckon I can build all that for less $$$ than the unit you are showing and it holds more filament! I use a similar set up on my lathe and it works great !
i took the lid off both of my units. and took a Dremel with a 1/16th drill bit. and added three relief holes. and now at 50* my RH sits at 20%.. just thought I'd share. since it doesn't vent sufficiently on its own. also ran bowden tube out of the unit and then added a pneumatic fitting to my custom printed filament sensor bracket. so it stays in the bowden tube the entire time. FLAWLESS PRINTS NOW..

Screw Sunlu. Never forget they had retail orders available weeks before they shipped out the Kickstarter orders. Also, I have the S1. My DIY converted food dehydrator works way better when doing long prints with Nylon.

Just to say, I risked the Kickstarter for the v2 and my unit arrived yesterday, so far no sign of them on Amazon or anywhere else. I'm just testing it now for the first time, so can't say if I think it's any good or not. One major gripe is that the screen is going to be on the back of the unit for pretty much all printers, if you're wanting to print directly from the dryer. Not the end of the world, once it's at the RH% wanted, but it is annoying.
One thing it doesn't have: a compartment for desiccant, the eSun filament dryer i have has a a compartment for it, because even if you heat up the filament, yes it would shed the moisture, but it woul still be in the air around it, you need to remove that in order to have it dried even better.
Has anyone noticed that sometimes you get a really high humidity inside the S2, and it doesn't decrease? I've threw in some old silica packs, and the humidity hit 98% - I'm guessing it started drying out the silica pack as well.... If I dry normally - with no silica - then I don't usually see the humidity in the S2 go below about 45-50%. Looking for anyone who has tinkered around with this to maybe improve the removal of humidity from the inside of the S2 when its come out of the filament...

While the new display is an improvement in light and contrast, the problem with max time only 24h is solved and you can use higher temperatures f.e. for nylon, the design has a big issue: You can not put multiple S2 side by side, as this blocks the display exept for the most left dryer. So if you are like me, printing directly from the dryers in multicolour, this is quite a big downside. Also putting it on a shelf above the 3d-printers is everything but comfotable. The filament output is on the front - so you need a ladder to setup the box? or get the box of the shelf (but with cables behind the shelf, it has no power than to set it up)? Sorry, but the s2 gas a very very bad design. I realy hope for an S1SE in the old formfactor with more light and contrast and longer possible runtime but old design. (exept maybe with second heater in the lid. The S2 is definitly an example of bad design: the optical design overrules the funvtion instead following it. The only reason to buy a S2 would be for higher temp filaments. But for dayly use, the S1 is much more comfortable, as you can (and have to :-( ) setup it mostly blind. I always set it up to 55° 24h anyway, so the same clicks every time. I even think of using an Arduino and some relais in parallel to the buttons to set a one click start and uping the remaining time to 24h. So I could make a panel to simply controlling my 6 S1 with 6 on/of switches. I realy hope for a S3 without any display and buttons /exept one on/off at the front) but WLAN using a browser to contol it. Also a second power in connector at the front would be a big improvement, if you want to put it onto a shelf above the printer(s) - so you can easy unplug the dryer, take it of the shelf, change spool of filament, put it back onto the shelf, plug the power cable in and start it. A filament dryer is a tool. Function is more important than the optical design. So I rate the S2 a design fail. Or to say it positive: It has a lot of potential for improvement...
Hi,! Someone on RUclips claims, after instrumental tests, that the set temperature is that of the "heating plates" and not that of the internal air, so if I set 70 degrees to print Nylon this will actually be "dried" at least 20 degrees lower. (50). This sounds bad to me ...
No fan again! They did not learn from before. The humidity stays trapped inside the unit with no fan to remove it. But a wet sponge in the thing and watch the humidity build up water on the inside plastic.
Can anyone on here tell me what the amazon prices were when it was available? According to some people, it was cheaper or the same price on release. I got in on the KS for the s2 really early for $47 and I'm fine with getting it a little later if I get it for cheaper, but if it's just going to be $50 on amazon, i'm out. Already close to dropping my back because of the shady stuff they are pulling and the comments on the s1 kickstarter
Looks a lot better and easier to use than my original. Top plate is a good addition, I wonder if that's as good as using a fan that many of us have modded for?
Circulating the air with a fan may be beneficial. With the shape of the S2 though, I don't think there'a a lot of room inside for it. The square shape of the S1 at least gave you a top rear corner where you could mount a fan.
So, where does the water actually go with these machines? It looks to me lika a fully enclosed box with only a heater inside? Sure, heating up the air inside allows for some tiny amount of extra humidity that the air can absorb, but is that enough to really dry the filament? Even the food dehydrators work by sucking in air from the room, heating it up to lower the relative humidity, pass that "dry" air over the food, then blow out the "wet" air again. 🤔 What am I missing here?

If it sits inside the dryer housing itself, then wouldn't it just go back into the filament when the heater is turned off? And don't say to open the dryer lid because if I'm going to spend the money on an "sutomated" filament dryer then I shouldn't have to do anything but put a roll of filament in the contraption. Otherwise, I may as well just spend US$30 and buy a food dehydrator which will do the job better.
Ug, I can't believe they pulled your quote out of context like that. I've got the S1 -- and I've had to watch your first video to figure out that cryptic control panel. This one certainly looks smoother, but yeah...people should wait for it to hit the shelves.
Have you tried printing directly from the dryer through the feed hole? Is it big enough to fit a reverse bowden tube through? I worry that printing straight from the dryer will rub the filament on the hole edge or that there will be too much friction somewhere in the system and the whole dryer will get yanked around, such as off a shelf which has happened for me multiple times with my S1.
One thing I've wondered about these dedicated filament dryer is, how much wattage does it us?. My repurposed food dehydrator uses (i'll have to double check) between 200-300 watts, which for infrequent use isn't a big deal, but if I wanted tto dry a lot of filament over a few days would add up.

I'm in tha .arket for a filament dryer. I'm new to 3d printing. I did purchase a hatchbox blue metallic pla filament . If prints a beautiful finish however the print them serve are very brittle and break. I'm told I need a filament dryer. The filament is fresh out the packaging. Does this sound accurate? And would you recommend this or another product?
Looks like a much better product than the near useless S1. But I will never support a crappy company like Sunlu again. I had a similarly awful Kickstarter experience with them. And they have contacted me several times to review products, AFTER I was to buy them from Amazon, and they would reimburse me. Not much in the way of ethics at Sunlu.
He probably already agreed to it and I don't know what kind of contract he might have with it, but there's that and the fact that if he agrees and doesn't do it they could not offer him to review products in the future and depending on how bad they are they could spread that blacklist to other product manufacturers. It's probably better to just be super frank about everything because it's just Sunlu damaging their own reputation at this point.
Because I agreed to do the review. And I didn't know it was a Kickstarter until after I was already into the process of testing the unit. Kickstarter antics aside, it *_IS_* a decent product, and a big improvement over the S1. But after this, I'm specifically asking companies whether a thing is going to be a Kickstarter. For what it's worth, I think Kickstarter is a great way for a startup to get funding to bring something to market. I don't agree with using it as a preorder system. Is that gatekeeping on my part? Maybe. I mean, who am I to say how Kickstarter gets used? But that's my opinion on it.
I own this filadryer and the humidity % simply doesn't change during use (45°C for PLA, humidity starts at 50% and stays 50% after hours of use). There is no air ventilation and no way for the humidity to escape so I'm not surprised that it simply doesn't work. Totally useless, I'll switch to a silica gel filled box. Big disappointment in not finding a truly honest review, but only false reviews from people who got this for free in order to trick customers.
This needs to be tested petg and pc, those absorbing humidity more and require higher temp to dry, all those dry boxes say one temperature, but even eibos monster one barely reaches 60 something.
This helped me decide NOT to buy this, I'll vote with my dollars elsewhere. SUNLU seriously needs to change their attitude and approach towards users, Kickstarter backers, and reviewers. There is nothing so snowflake special here that is worth ignoring other offerings in its favor.
I'm not happy about the Kickstarter shenanigans, but I think calling either of them useless is a stretch; both are capable of successfully drying filament.
Hi Bryan, I hope you're well. You have to wonder just how many of these were sent out for review. My problem with this sort of action is that you, the reviewer, has to give an opinion of a product that you've not paid for with your hard earned cash. I think you're one of the very few reviewers that gives an honest review of a product, but still.. If I were give a pair of Gucci shoes to review, I might be swayed by the thought that if I didn't review them favourably, other companies wouldn't send me what is basically free stuff. Free stuff that is on permanent loan. But if I were like yourself, honest, I might say the shoes pinch or were too large etc, but as I didn't pay for them, one cannot give a value for money opinion. As for this product, I'll stick to my plastic box containing silica gel, as outlined on Crosslink's channel

I think it's the same length. Reaches from a fairly close outlet up to desk height, but that's about it.

@@BV3D good point. Hopefully the curve all around and top plate probably negate the need of one.
@@BV3D I had thought of solution to that, make a hole and have fan blow into a hose to the hole. Angle it so it "spins" the air inside it.

the screen on the side is a no go for me. Not sure what they were thinking. Go to pull it off the shelf just to see what its doing.
My back-lit display comes on when I turn the unit on, but the back-light will turn off after a few minutes and stay off.

Hello. Can the screen backlight be turned off? During operation, the screen is constantly lit.
Have you tried printing directly from the dryer through the feed hole? Is it big enough to fit a reverse bowden tube through? I worry that printing straight from the dryer will rub the filament on the hole edge or that there will be too much friction somewhere in the system and the whole dryer will get yanked around, such as off a shelf which has happened for me multiple times with my S1.
You would think they would come with a hard metal insert that would marry to a length of Bowden tube or at least a pneumatic fitting

Is it safe to be in the room when it is drying? Does it give off harmful fumes?
I am wondering that there is no fan, moisture would be trapped inside. The drying efficiency is greatly reduced.
What happens when you to turn it on without no filament inside, mine comes down to 46% after 2.5hours
Does your unit keep the led ring on? Mine turns off after one or two minutes no matter the setting I put in led menu.
One thing I've wondered about these dedicated filament dryer is, how much wattage does it us?. My repurposed food dehydrator uses (i'll have to double check) between 200-300 watts, which for infrequent use isn't a big deal, but if I wanted tto dry a lot of filament over a few days would add up.
Apparently maximum power output is 48 watts so pretty efficient.

Where does the moisture go when removed from the filament? And safety: 150some degrees sitting around for several hours?

I'm in tha .arket for a filament dryer. I'm new to 3d printing.
I did purchase a hatchbox blue metallic pla filament . If prints a beautiful finish however the print them serve are very brittle and break.
I'm told I need a filament dryer. The filament is fresh out the packaging.

What’s a good room humidity level for printing?
Looks like a much better product than the near useless S1. But I will never support a crappy company like Sunlu again. I had a similarly awful Kickstarter experience with them. And they have contacted me several times to review products, AFTER I was to buy them from Amazon, and they would reimburse me. Not much in the way of ethics at Sunlu.
Do they have a price for it (sorry, I can't find a good link for their kickstarter)?
Why in the world would you review this after the S1 experience and their misuse of your S1 review for the S2?
He probably already agreed to it and I don't know what kind of contract he might have with it, but there's that and the fact that if he agrees and doesn't do it they could not offer him to review products in the future and depending on how bad they are they could spread that blacklist to other product manufacturers.
It's probably better to just be super frank about everything because it's just Sunlu damaging their own reputation at this point.
Because I agreed to do the review. And I didn't know it was a Kickstarter until after I was already into the process of testing the unit. Kickstarter antics aside, it *_IS_* a decent product, and a big improvement over the S1. But after this, I'm specifically asking companies whether a thing is going to be a Kickstarter.
For what it's worth, I think Kickstarter is a great way for a startup to get funding to bring something to market. I don't agree with using it as a preorder system. Is that gatekeeping on my part? Maybe. I mean, who am I to say how Kickstarter gets used? But that's my opinion on it.

Sounds like some shady folks. I'll buy a dehydrater and bypass this for that reason.
I own this filadryer and the humidity % simply doesn't change during use (45°C for PLA, humidity starts at 50% and stays 50% after hours of use). There is no air ventilation and no way for the humidity to escape so I'm not surprised that it simply doesn't work. Totally useless, I'll switch to a silica gel filled box.
Big disappointment in not finding a truly honest review, but only false reviews from people who got this for free in order to trick customers.

This needs to be tested petg and pc, those absorbing humidity more and require higher temp to dry, all those dry boxes say one temperature, but even eibos monster one barely reaches 60 something.

This helped me decide NOT to buy this, I'll vote with my dollars elsewhere. SUNLU seriously needs to change their attitude and approach towards users, Kickstarter backers, and reviewers. There is nothing so snowflake special here that is worth ignoring other offerings in its favor.
So the same useless dryer as the S1 (no fan) hence the bonkers 6 hrs timer setting, thanks but no thanks!!!
I'm not happy about the Kickstarter shenanigans, but I think calling either of them useless is a stretch; both are capable of successfully drying filament.

Hi Bryan, I hope you're well. You have to wonder just how many of these were sent out for review. My problem with this sort of action is that you, the reviewer, has to give an opinion of a product that you've not paid for with your hard earned cash. I think you're one of the very few reviewers that gives an honest review of a product, but still.. If I were give a pair of Gucci shoes to review, I might be swayed by the thought that if I didn't review them favourably, other companies wouldn't send me what is basically free stuff. Free stuff that is on permanent loan. But if I were like yourself, honest, I might say the shoes pinch or were too large etc, but as I didn't pay for them, one cannot give a value for money opinion. As for this product, I'll stick to my plastic box containing silica gel, as outlined on Crosslink's channel
