It is not a war crime to shoot escaping prisoners. It is a war crime for you once you have surrendered to attack your captors. Once your are free, you are then permitted to rejoin the war, you do not have to make it back to your side.

I watched the full move over 10 years ago, but it has to be loosely based on Malmedy Massacre. If they tried to fully recreate it here I would have to pick on that, since there was no record of any american shooting germans when it happened (as some POWs survived and lived to tell the tale) and a few guys have 101st Airborne badge as well as 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment markings on helmets - problem with that is 101st airborne arrived at Bastogne after midnight on 19th of December, while the massacre happened on 17th
