  • This is an animatronic pirate show I made a few years ago for Halloween. I was doing some touch-ups this summer in the garage and thought it would be the perfect time to get a really good video. Enjoy!
The skeletons are store-bought posable props that I outfitted with servos and programmed to fit a custom show-audio I created in Garageband using audio clips from the Pirates of the Caribbean rides in the Disney Parks (tellnotales.com/audio.php). The treasure used is mostly glass vases and other objects bought at thrift stores and painted to look gold, silver, bronze, etc. The costumes are made from clothing also brought from thrift stores that I then distressed. The barrels, crate, and chest are actual antiques bought from a salvage yard that have not been altered.
Edit: Here's how to make these skeletons!

This is really cool. We have a bunch of prop skeletons and a full size science class type articulated skeleton. I would love to add some animation to them this year.

Fantastic. I am only working on a desktop version with three characters. An old time radio, a raven and a skull. I really like this.

Wonderfully done. I've been looking at an alternative to the fancy 3-axis skulls setups and these could work out well. Love the pirate display!

awesome display! I would love to get more information on your "lost at sea" tombstone and how you integrated fiber optic cable into it.

      Thanks!
The tombstone itself is a ceramic on that I bought at Target a few years ago. I looked and I don’t think they sell them anymore (but you might still be able to find one on eBay)
I did find this one though: www.grandinroad.com/-22lost-at-sea-22-tombstone/1187542
It’s super pricey but looks wicked cool.
And about the fiber optics, I think that’s a reflection from the spotlights on the ceramic. There aren’t any fiber-optics or lights of any kind inside the tombstone-there are just candle lights around it and two Fire-and-Ice lights shining on the whole scene. I hadn’t noticed but it does make a cool effect!

Are you animatronics outdoors? If so - are they waterproof? How do they handle the weather?

What skulls are you using? Did you add the servos on your own? What are you using to run your show? Awesome work!

    • @CatsMenagerie
      @CatsMenagerie  5 лет назад +1

The skulls used are just the ones that came on the skeletons. If you tie a knot on the string that comes out of the top of the head (used to hang them in the store) and pop the head off of the spine, it holds the skull to the spine creates a sort of universal joint (a super cheap and easy alternative from having to install a joint there!)
We then just attached the 2 servos on the shoulder blades and used piano wire to connect them to the back of the head.
I used Track Skull by Monkey Basic/HauntMonkey to record the show and exported that to Brookshire's VSA.
I’m currently working on a video showing all of this so stay tuned! :)
And I saw the videos on your pirate display! It looks so good!

Thanks for tip on the string, I never thought of using that for anything.
I'm really interested in seeing your video, especially the servo locations since I've never seen one attached to the shoulder blades.
Thanks for the kind words. I just need to figure out a better way of triggering/exporting my show as all my props have controllers that are activated by sound. I need a program that I can use my Behringer audio interface to run the outputs.

@@CatsMenagerie As I was watching I could not help but hear the Sea Gull throughout... adding a Sea Gull skeleton to the scene would be cool.
