TV Tokyo is the smallest private broadcaster based in Tokyo, but they've made some of my favorite shows, including this Aoi Honoo, as well as The Hero Yoshihiko and the Demon King's Castle & Kodoku no Gourmet. Ganbare TV Tokyo!❤
0:55, I'm reminded of Sid being afraid of the toys being alive in Toy Story. Tho tbh, Honoo's drawings are like Yoshinori Kanada-esque but Hideaki Anno's realism packs. 2 of their styles are different but cool in their own right.
"He apparently just reads encyclopedia articles on Judeo-Christian Gnosticism in the library most of the time, I hear he actually has problems completing his assignments. I guess he's taking Psych 101 as an elective too."
The problem is that he is comparing it, Anno loves to push himself to the limit, it doesn't mean you cannot making something meaningful. The problem is he could also make something meaningful, so unless you can craft a masterpiece, it is over for you.
We always had that one "gifted and talented" classmate during our art school classes. All artists who went thru art school know the feeling of having to watch the one classmate showcase their work hahaha.
The impact of the hit, the weight of the car is conveyed perfectly. It's hard to do it right. That's why it's so impressive. The first animation while good is much simpler in concept.
In my opinion, is because they don't fully understand the meaning of adapting. It's obvious that there are things that can not be translated from manga to live action, hence, you have to adapt them to the more ground of reality, however, they usually just take the same scenes from the manga/anime and recreate them exactly as they are but with real people. Americans do the exact opposite, they change too many things to the point the work is almost unrecognizable. The first death nove live adaptations are a good example of an adaptation done right; they changed a lot of things to fit them on a two part movie, but they kept the escence of the series.
First of all, this show is, itself, a live-action adaptation of a manga, and it is good. Second, a lot of Japanese live actions suck because, like any other film industries, the Japanese film industry loves cash grabs: made to make quick easy money by riding on trends and beloved IPs without actually understanding what makes the trend/IP good and without giving the creators proper resources and time. Third, unlike a lot of Western animation and comics, anime and manga are less tethered to realism and are more surreal and stylised making the process of replicating them in live action extra difficult. You become required to change stuff or sacrifice great parts of the source material (like atmosphere or character designs) just to make the work translate better to live action. However, when Japan nails their live action animanga adaptations, they nail them real well: the Rurouni Kenshin adaptations are imperfect but pretty badass, Alice in Borderland is well-loved for a reason and is way better than the anime, Ichi the Killer is a classic, Anno's Cutie Honey live action is one of the best tokusatsu films ever, Our Little Sister is a critically acclaimed arthouse drama, Lady Snowblood and the Lone Wolf & Cub saga are some of the most influential movies ever (just ask Tarantino where he gets his ideas), the Nana live action is also influential in Asian cinema, the Helter Skelter live action is a very interesting interpretation of the manga, and the live action Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo that was made by the same director that made Hausu is an all time "weird movies" great. I haven't even mentioned all the good TV show live actions that arent Netflix-released: From Today It's My Turn, My Love Mix-up, Draughty Seasonal Maidens, The Way of the Househusband, Cherry Magic, Gokusen, etc.
Now I want a show where it's just every major animator of the 90s all going to the same school. See it's a battle anime but the battles are just their drawings fighting each other.

I'd be his friend and learn from him.
Or he would make you overwork in a monastery
A lot of his schoolmates are also good animators, some better than him, and they would later on form Gainax.
