      I had a similar problem: I could NOT train/teach my pup (BC) to not pull. I never once thought I should KILL him for it. I always thought it was MY fault, for not being able to teach him.

    That IS not a real person, but a troll. NO vet would put a puppy down because of some training issue.
    My young Border/Aussie was a puller because he couldn't wait to get to where we were going to do those things he lives for. Your videos have helped me immensely in understanding him, and our relationship is better. Thank you.

    Thanks so much for this video! Sometimes it can get frustrating when I am training my dog because he gets very distracted especially if there is a dog that is walking by our house but he has been getting better. I have also had to work on him getting calmer when he sees new people because he absolutely loves to be pet by people😂😁 and I've had to teach people how to pet him without getting him too excited because for some reason people(mostly my family members 😂) love to get a super excited reaction out of him

    • @TheDogVlog
      @TheDogVlog  3 года назад +2

      Yes people sometimes love that excited reaction dogs can have and it can be so confusing to dogs when others don't love it so much! I still am working every day with my 2 youngest dogs with distractions. It's amazing the difference it makes over time, but at first it is very small changes. Learning new patterns takes time. :)

      I love your videos, I'm crying. I have a physical disability and use mobility devices. I'm training my bc puppy to be a service dog. She never pulls when walking with ambulatory people, But does fall with me when I'm in my wheelchair or electric scooter. I see now that she believes it's her job and that's why she is pulling with me. I was thinking it was a problem, but now I see it's a good thing... It makes her happy, fulfilled and purposeful... Thank you 😊❤

    that story made me sad that people think that way :T but I agree with you, knowing and bonding with your dog. my pup pulls alot cause he wants to potty, once he finishes potty he really is an amazing walker, so i just go and let him pull until he finishes potty near our place where he usually potty, then we walk further

    i hope people take in your wisdom in this video dogs are a lot of work the first few years after that you can start expecting things and they may slowly condition you to be their puppet like bringing the leash when they wanna walk or shoes....... mines only months and she has started pawing at me to get my attention when she wants to play i figure im allowing it as she breaks me out of hyperfocus when my add gets to strong.
    i got my bc because i wanted the challenge of keeping her happy fit and well trained, its my responsibility to make sure i get the help for that and that i read, watch and listen to all the advice that is out there i sadly dont have a space where she can dig trenches like keegan but she has emtied every single planter i own and my high planters with herbs.
    looking forward to learning from the fetch video.

There can always be challenges, especially with high energy dogs. I'm so glad that you take your pet ownership responsibilities seriously and no doubt your BC is in great hands. I'm just starting to watch your videos and have already gotten some ideas but I was wondering where you would suggest starting? She's about a year old and was abandoned as a puppy and then lived in the shelter for about 6 months before we got her so she didn't have any kind of training before we adopted her. Ty for any advice you can give me!

    My BC pulls when on lead, I tried everything until I discovered that my partner actively encourages her to pull and mouth the leash!
    Two months ago she pulled me over resulting in a Brocken ankle for me. I would never blame Storm, it is not her fault that her dad finds it funny to encourage negative behaviour. On a plus note when she is at the barn with me and my horses she behaves impeccably, my partner doesn’t often come to the barn (he is frightened of horses after being attacked by a mare with a foal) so she has only had training from me there.

    • @TheDogVlog
      @TheDogVlog  3 года назад +2

      That is awesome that Storm is so good with the horses! Sometimes it’s hard to get partners and family onside with the training. Sorry to hear about the broken ankle, even the smaller dogs can have a lot of force when they want to run! Good luck with your continued training!

      All you gotta do is show her how you want her to walk without you. Aeon Taylor’s his walking to whoever he’s walking with. Come on, if she’s a Border Collie she can do it if you’re smart enough to teach her.

But the best bit about storm is he’s my pall 🐶😎

    My BC pulls. For me it's a safety issue for me and for her--so thank you for the references. Second comment: can you talk about BCs and car chasing? Maybe you've already done a video on this and I just didn't catch it. I don't live on a particularly busy road and my border collie runs in a securely fenced-in area, but she jumps up against the fence every time a car goes by. When we are on walks, she lunges at cars. It scares me. I've been working a lot with her on focus type games--sitting and staying, "place" and that sort of thing. Any game with a toy involved as a reward is a big hit (she's not super food motivated). But when the cars go by, it's like I don't exist. Final comment: This is my first dog, and from what I've seen so far, I think maybe dogs learn things at different rates. Lucy is 2 now and she has a lot more ability to focus and learn than what she had even six months ago. Her recall ability has really improved (just not when she sees a car). I wish I could take some of the credit, but, honestly, I think she's just getting a little older. We need to be patient and allow each dog to learn at their own rate.

    • @TheDogVlog
      @TheDogVlog  3 года назад

      First, I do agree that adolescents can go through a period where it's more difficult to focus and they can need more help. 2 things with car chasing - taking away the opportunity to rehearse the behaviour is the first priority - sometimes that means on leash management outdoors so that they don't have a chance to jump at the fence when they see a car. Or containment to an area where the rehearsal isn't possible. (i.e. indoors) If she is doing the car lunging during walks, then I would not walk her anywhere near cars. So this could mean playing games instead of walks for awhile and doing things like fetch for example, plus the loose leash walking games. I would definitely suggest the video on loose leash walking games - you can do these every day. ruclips.net/video/c3kS5NIfMbk/видео.html And also this counter conditioning video would be important for your dog so you might want to start with this one: ruclips.net/video/cYu1_eNWXos/видео.html I would use your dog's meal for some of these exercises and include some higher value food (stuff that your dog really loves). Good luck, and keep on keeping on!

    When walking My 6 month Labrador, he always lunges at other dogs as he wants to run and play. Also, if I let him play with other dogs he does not recall EVER! I become invisible! Should I stop walking him in the park/fields until he’s older? It’s so frustrating and tiring. Not all owners want a rather large, over excited puppy jumping all over their dog. Help 😵‍💫

    Such a sad story. Dogs pull because they’re really excited to do what they’re bred to do. I hope that person doesn’t get a Sammy nor any other working, herding, hunting breed. The commenter doesn’t understand how dogs communicate. They’re not humans.

    • @YetisPlace
      @YetisPlace 3 года назад +2

      I started my RUclips channel, to educate people about Samoyeds. Too many of them end up in dog shelters, because the owners don’t understand how to work with those dogs. Much like your Borders. It’s important for owners to understand their dog’s breed, what they’re meant to do.

    • @TheDogVlog
      @TheDogVlog  3 года назад +1

      Yes there is so much misunderstanding about dogs and a common belief that they are trying to "dominate" their owners. Imagine if we thought about kids that way and how we might approach parenting. :( If people are searching for solutions here on YT then that's a start. And if they realize a dog is a life long commitment and training is not `quick fixing' then maybe people will reconsider their relationships with dogs.

      @@TheDogVlog I heard a good line the other day. "If your child is old enough to reason then why spank them? If your child is too young to reason then wtf???" Same goes for dogs and "punishment" in my opinion.

    I don't care what this person's background, expectations, and experiences with dogs are, this person deserves every ounce of judgment they may have, and deservedly will, receive. A dog is not a stuffed animal you can pick off the shelf, play with for a while, then discard because you feel like it. This should be obvious to anyone, regardless of what their expectations of dogs are. It makes you wonder how many puppies this clearly novice dog owner will kill, and already has. I'm certain if the breeder knew their puppy had been euthanized, they would be up in arms. Good breeders always ask for their puppies to be returned rather than surrendered (or killed!) if the owner can no longer look after it. That's assuming this individual even knows about identifying proper, ethical breeders in the first place. The ignorance to think that a border collie (of all dogs!) will be a relaxed, couch potato creature, also shows how little understanding of breed requirements this person has. They should be banned from ever owning a sentient creature for life. My moral concerns also extend to the veterinarian who was willing to do this. I understand that this kind of behaviourally motivated euthanasia is practiced for dogs whom rehabilitation has repeatedly failed, but it's typically done in the interest of public safety. Putting down a perfectly healthy puppy (soon to be two) is disgusting. I wonder what the vet will think when this person brings in another puppy 6 months later to be euthanized as well.
