  • Proof that it pays to never give up, regardless of how you may be viewing the competition from your current vantage point...
    I use this frequently as an example when speaking at conferences. It is often better to focus on things within ones contriol as opposed to becoming distracted with fighting the competition.

    Steven Bradbury.
    He trained for over 10yrs. Once had his leg cut by another skaters blade, lost 4 litres of blood. All four quadricep muscles were sliced through, he had 111 stiches and was lucky not to bleed to death. Another time a skater fell in front of him, he tried to jump them but he clipped them and crashed and broke his neck in Two places. Told to never skate again.
    People falling over doesnt make you deserve first place. Chasing your dream and never giving up makes you deserve it.

      Just adding to this super old comment:
      If someone thinking "how can you lose 4 litres of blood?".
      If you count blood transfused to him before they got the bleeding under control, he can very much lose that much. For example litres of his own blood, and then a few more of transfused blood.

    @yurkler I'd say Bradburys biggest luck was he wasn't killed after his big crash were they said he wouldn't walk again, he was also lucky 18 months before the games when he broke his neck and they said he couldn't compete. Ohno knew Bradbury had suffered a lot thats why he told him to accept the medal, not for the 90 seconds but for the 12 years.

    Looks like a few others forgot that that night in Salt Lake City. But Bradbury never did. The Americans and Koreans can whinge and whine all they like, but at the end of the day, Bradbury fulfilled the most basic tenet of any ice skating discipline: STAY ON YOUR FEET. (And Apollo Ohno accepted the result for that very reason.)

    He was the last man standing and first to cross the line. Period. Steven knew he would have come last even if he got into the mix, but his tactic was to sit back and take advantage of the clusterfuck he knew could possibly unfold, which is what happened in his semi-final.

    • @Dukeyyyyyyy
      @Dukeyyyyyyy 7 лет назад +1

      Polpiv4tifish no, he had been injured loads, and only was in the final because this happened in the semi as well. He is a terrible skater compared to the rest, admittedly because of his previous injuries.

    • @JPH1138
      @JPH1138 7 лет назад +37

      Bradbury had been one of the favourites for the gold in a previous Olympiad. Ironically he lost that final due to a crash very similar to this one, in which he sustained potentially life (nevermind career) ending injuries. You cannot really make an argument that Bradbury wasn't a deserving winner.

    Arguing the fact he deserves his medal - Ohno said afterwards "thats just speed skating" it happens a lot, true it was the first time in an olympic final. Ohno was also the one who said in a interview after the olympics that to finish first you first have to finish. I do think Ohno is the better skater but on the day Bradbury was the first over the line and that's all that matters. There is a good video on here with Bradburys side of the story, its quite good.

      Seems strange how people like to discount somebody's win.
      If this person was born at the same time they would have won.
      If this person was not sick they would have won.
      If i had been there i would have won.
      To Win is not just because they are the best.
      It is because on that day, at that time, in that year, and in that place they were the first to cross the line first before anyone else.
      May not happen again,
      or maybe it could???

    I think a lot of people misunderstand the basic idea of this race.
    Staying back and being prepared for the leaders to fall is an accepted tactic in speed skating; Bradbury himself later said that it was recommended that if you were slower than the lead, you stay in touch with them but hold back.
    It often can get you into the next stage of the race.
    It seldom gets you the gold medal, but as we see here - in exceptional circumstances, even that is possible! :)

    So? First one to cross the line wins. Bradbury was a bronze medalist in 1994, world champion in 1991, 3rd in the world in 1993 and 2nd in 1994. To make a come back nearly 10 years later, during which he suffered a broken vertebrae, lost four litres of blood on the ice (same accident severed his thigh and he couldn't walk for 18 months) and he decided to come back and race his best in 2002. He did that and won, don't say he doesn't deserve Gold. To finish first you first have to finish.

    it might not seem fair to the haters, but in the olympics, the first guy across the finish line wins the race.
    he won, he deserved to win. he skated 1000 meters before the other guys did. that was the object of the competition. what's so hard to understand about that?
    they give the gold medal to the guy who crosses the finish line first, not the guy who PROBABLY would've crossed the finish line first but then got knocked over.
    scoreboard.

    To the people saying he never gave up, he literally talked to his coach before the race and knew he couldn't keep with them so he basically conceded to them and stayed in the back of the race the whole time hoping that they would crash at the end and they did. He had a strategy in mind and it worked to perfection. Has nothing to do with no giving up.

    This is a top 3 Sporting moment of all time for me. One for the battler.For the bloke who never gives in. The bloke who keeps on pursuing his chosen sport because he loves it. Steve was and never will be an Apollo Ono, but he pushed on, scraped up the money, designed the boots for the speed skaters..still he kept going. Nearly died at one stage when a skate nearly sliced a leg off.. then this divine intervention..Gold. It still gives me goosebumps!

    I love the shit people try to give Australia. Fact is with a population of 20 million and a 10 year long drought it's amazing we still have athletes winning gold medals in Vancouver and we're coming 13th, ahead of Great Britain, Poland, Japan etc. Still two more events ahead that we have a very good chance of winning gold in!

    I get goosebumps watching this. I've never seen snow fall from the sky as a born and bred Perth Aussie so seeing this play out is like our version of Cool Runnings.

    so your saying that any skater who has broken their neck 18 months earlier and been told they can never skate again would win from that position? I find it amazing he can even skate at all, let alone at an international level.

    It hardly ever snow's in Australia and there are probably only around 3 ice skating rings in each city compared to America and other countries where it continually snows every winter. its called skill. Bradbury's a fuckin legend

    Like I said before, that kilometer (5 furlongs) inside the EnergySolutions Arena aka Delta Center aka Salt Lake Ice Center I saw the absolute greatest race EVER. I don't care who says what.

    except for the fact that he only made the final coz skaters fell in the semifinal. Even in the heats he only made it through coz somebody else was disqualified. The ultimate luck.

  • @TheSwert

    What makes this funnier is that the exact same thing happened in the semi-final. Only Ono and Bradbury stayed on their feet and Bradbury went from last to 2nd.

    how wasnt it fair. They fell he crossed the line fair and square. They don't deserve gold just because they fell. He won that race as good aS anyone else.

    In skating, I'm pretty sure tripping and falling down is the worst thing you can do
    He was the only one who didn't trip

    @lacrossefan2 Lol, what? Sure, Bradbury is an incredible athlete. He fought the odds to even compete, let alone win. The fact remains, if EVERYONE ELSE IN THE RACE didn't crash in the last corner, he would have come in last. The only reason he was even in the final to begin with is because he did the SAME THING in the semi final. Cruised behind everyone, waited for someone to crash, cruised to victory.

  • @z00tGRUNT
    @z00tGRUNT 15 лет назад

    I'm actually quite sure that Bradbury planned it. He said in interviews after the event that he anticipated a crash near the final corner specifically because he knew how 'hungry' everyone else would be.
    How true this is is debatable, but looking at how far back he was keeping his distance, I believe that someone of his skill, even if he isn't the best, wouldn't be THAT far behind unless he was expecting a crash.

  • @3g0syst3m
    @3g0syst3m 15 лет назад

    He also lost out to a gold medal due to a fall ova when he was 'hungry', I can see where your coming from bout the hard work but then luck also comes into consideration then with if someones not feeling to well on the day, with the cruising thing, that happens with most things, example is in soccer when the goalies have fallen ova and the striker does a small kick to just get it in. I don't see why he had to 'look' hungry to deserve a medal. Either way I'm just gonna leave it at this bye

  • @3g0syst3m
    @3g0syst3m 15 лет назад

    Not really considering what he actually went through to get to this point, not to mention he knew he actually had little to no chance keeping up with the others so he planned to chase behind and hope that they would fall ova or something along those lines and maybe catch a medal, he was so shocked that his strategy worked that he just coasted to the finish, kind of like the old saying of the tortise and the hare.
