The most baffling thing to me is Bandai not giving them the permission to use locations from the anime. No voice actors, music, or actual skins from the show beyond recolors.

I would’ve loved that certain gundams had like other games when you do certain attacks, voice actor talks or something.
I mean we all play for nostalgia so it would’ve made it so much better

Speaking of voice actors, there was one voice in particular that you could select for your suits, and it actually sounds like the ENG VA for Setsuna.

yah one of the main selling points of gunpla is the nostalgia factor, no matter how many gundam series they release, each builders has a favorite from the past, thats why gundam build was such an eye candy, they really put so much nostalgia and easter egg on it.... sadly this game is just a game with gundams and almost nothing more from the source materials

It's one reason that a lot of people, myself included, caulked it up as Overwatch with Gundam Skin. Nothing feels very 'Gundam" about it save for maybe some of the sprays and decals. Hell only Dom with it's hover movement made me feel like I was playing something that wasn't just "Man in Robot Suit". It was really weird how much of Gundam they didn't want to put into their own game.

The Capital hogging was the first thing everyone that played the game noticed. Me and a buddy got everyone we know into the game, it was great, but people quickly got frustrated with the zero pay out policy. Every patch we had a wish list and every time number 1 was 'Give Capital for matches'. The disconnects were also brutal, it was genuinely upsetting to be top of team and just get dropped for no reason.
If this game wasn't Gundam I would have dropped it within a few days. And it's sad to see everyone agree on these points, so many had the same issues, I'm happy the devs had fun, but they killed thier game. They could work on these problems, they could give out more Capital. It's sucks that it's closing, but I feel very little sympathy for the dev team.

This is something I’ve seen in games like Deep Rock Galactic and Monster Hunter. If the game is good and not scummy, people are more willing to spend money on it. The game has to be a complete and fun experience first, then a monetized live service second.

Agreed all with those points, especially with the competitive part, I feel like they're really pushing it with that and with the questionable balance changes and reasons does not help.
There are only a few "legit" skins also, most of them are just lines, I don't really mind if its recolors (and if they don't overdo it), recolors should stick to grey/common variant, patterns should go to blue/uncommon, changing or glowing skins should be in purple/epic tier, and overhaul (slight remodel with different color and/or textures) will be a yellow/ legendary tier.
A lot of missing features- like you said are a factor, modern games like this are to be expected to already have them, like kill cams, back-fills, reconnect button, and some others.
The ping number are also just straight up incorrect, mine displays 38 while it feels like 180, don't know why they did this, but it's there.
It is true, that this game are too ambitious for it's own good, but damn does it got potential- and like many other said; "the core gameplay is good fun".
Really wish it didn't turn out this way, but I hope they are able to learn something from this, and maybe- just maybe somewhere down the line, they will come back better.
I was not surprised to see this game go so soon, but damn it is still bitter-sweet, I really hope I can get Mahiroo's secret MVP before it goes, and when it goes, I will miss the little guy, I really glad I used my battle pass coins for him at S1, never regret that choice.
I know this is a bit preemptive, but thank you for the fun memories and hellish experience fighting NewTypes on Casuals, Gundam Evolution, it's been one hell of a ride.
And thank you Axelottol for the vids, I very much enjoy your sound remasters !

Awesome video. I believe that the discriminatory region lock was the main factor. Im from Latinamerica. Fps are huge in BR servers that many countries share, so the player base is huge, and gumdam is quite popular due to the impact 90s anime. BUT we only got access to the game a few months ago. After the server discrimination, and forcing us to loose the firts seasons of content, it was almost imposible to convince anyone to try the game.

I always debate the "they didn't add popular mobile suit" thing, I've seen lots wanting they added SEED unit like the strike or so, and I question: which one of those wouldn't just be a shoot spam of skill set? Not many popular units coul be choosable for the game without being boring, too simple or just being forced by fanservice, they nailed some like Unicorn, Sazabi and Nu. Also there was for sure marketing but only in Japan and USA, they really missed some big event like the game awards, the game was already released by then and no promotion at all by Bandai Namco, then the console events (nintendo event, state of play, etc) and also nothing, and both reach worldwide audience. So for me the main problem was Bandai Namco directly, they managed the game really bad, prioritize money over keeping people coming to the game and the server problems are not something rare to see in Bamco games

  • @mr.international2778

One issue i had with at least with most of the vanilla units in the game were that they were either wierd choices and the ones that were there were not faithful to their design in the fiction. My biggest offender of this was pale rider which is this absolute beast in the media its featured in but turned into this soldier 76 ripoff in GE

straight up. the thing that killed this for me was not having access to every unit. that killed the game for me. when i seen someone wipe a team with exia, i didnt have that unit. it was just annoying
Edit: what you said at the end. if they re release this game with 30 dollar price tag and have everything unlocked it would be fine. and have in game currency for skins and stickers. its mostly the locked characters that hurt the game. look how much flack OW2 got for locking characters behind the battle pass for ranked mode.

They've been hitting winners but are now fumbling constantly thanks to mismanagement and short sightedness. I can't wait for their "gundam metaverse" game to be a catastrophe and then say "oh, well i guess gamers dont like gundam, shrug, its never our fault"

The capital scarcity was an issue but I didn’t mind because I love gundam so much, I’d just buy the units I wanted but I know that would not be good for more casual players. What did it for me was the 10+ minute wait for a match just for a player to leave or get kicked somehow and the match you waited so long for would be ended and you’d have to wait another 5-10 minutes. Also, when you would get booted and then suspended because you can’t backfill or rejoin matches. Lastly, I feel like they had so many customization options they coupd of used but didn’t (voice overs, sound effects, colors, mobile suit variations ).

Problems that caused the low player numbers:
Almost no advertisements outside of Twitter. (Super lazy in the advertising department)
Playable MS roster is so few and not everyone wanted.
GBO2 snatched majority of the PC players away. (Not surprising)
The old DAILY & WEEKLY missions was so tedious, it didn't appeal to casual players.(Had to play specific MS to complete mission)
HQ Mode made people get fed up due to the unnecessary long match times.
HQ Mode has a huge snowball effect, effectively demoralizing players on the losing side.
Matchmaking is stupid to the point you get teamed up with lower ranks despite being way waaay higher than them.
Not much incentive to make newcomers to play longer. (No capital gain & no acct level up rewards)
Skins of MS and weapons are so generic and lackluster. (Just add stripes or only single/two color pallete)
Too many regions/countries can't play the game.
Few maps. (Repetition is same old maps)
Voice lines only in EN Dub. (No options to choose other language dubs)
There's no representative MS for ZZ, X, V, G and etc
Should've released MSGO (Mobile Suit Gundam Online) Worldwide instead.
Way better due to the 50 vs 50 matches.

I had plans on making a video on how the endless bickering about what killed G-Evo was pointless, as it was a variety of small factors collectively and not one thing in particular that took it out of contention. All the points I was going to make though, you just covered, so I'll just reference this video if that comes up again (saves me some effort).
Player numbers are rarely linear in their growth or decline, the longer upward or downward trends continue the steeper the curve. I had/am still having fun with this game, but the trends on the quality of life, unit balancing, player base (decline), etc. painted a clear picture that unless something big changed for the better (I figured season 3; AT THE LATEST) this was inevitable. Still, only a year; that hurt.
I still hold out hope that we might at some point see the Gundam Vs. series make the jump to PC, I have some history with those games, and while arcade-style action might not be for everyone, it is probably the best Gundam gaming experience I've had. I also hope that if it makes the jump to PC they don't gut it with F2P microtransaction trash, ask for my money upfront and It'll be provided, after which I would just like to enjoy the game without having to grind for passes or drop extra money for anything other than BIG expansions.
On a completely unrelated note, I like the Original Blade Runner music you put in there, you have good taste.

  • @otterfire4712

Couple things: I think the suits should have had either canon pilots using them or a new character with an interesting story behind them. This gets players who love lore to care about the suits they pilot and helps define which player is emoting. Players can love suit designs, but even more, players will care about the characters who used the suits.
Advertising to Twitch isn't exactly the best idea as viewers are typically in niche communities with established interests. As the game itself, advertisement is tricky since the suits don't quite have a personality.
Their premium pass wasn't the worst thing they did. $10 to get the premium pass could be stretched out to multiple seasons, provided you complete the pass each season. Sure you'd get just enough Blue Cap to buy a suit, but you'd still miss out on unlocking at least a couple suits.
I don't think it's imperative to own all of the suits, plent of the f2p suits were plenty viable Barbatos is a fantastic example of this. That said, with no real rewards for playing games beyond some progress on the pass made it somewhat difficult to play it, even with the solid game play (sometimes ruined by poor server quality).
I stand by the statement that Gundam Evolution is a superior team shooter to Overwatch. Gun play is an important factor, revival and the dash meter added depth to combat. Suits were, for the most part, reasonably designed for play and counterplay. Maps were pretty cool, though some areas could have received some adjustments.

Gameplay-wise I think for a competitive gundam PC game, it is a very good start. I applaud Bandai's effort to push gundam franchise to the western gaming market. Sadly the direct competitor of Gundam Evolution, Overwatch 2 is also set to release just 2 months later, and the PVP mode is also F2P, all of the Gundam Evolution flaws have become even more apparent, for example:
    1) Gameplay does not have the same level of polish like OW2 (Stuff like hit indicator, sound effect does not match up to what OW2 has to offer, making the gaming experience less rewarding.)
    2) Character Design, all of the mobile suit has different role and kits, sure. But I think it is a huge missed opportunity to include pilot voice actor to voice the mobile suits. Like Char voicing Sazabi and Amuro voicing Nu Gundam, this could enhance the immersion for gundam lovers and newcomer alike.
    3) Microtransaction design, $35 USD for a set of paint jobs is simply not worth it. Even Blizzard would at least throw in a few accessories and create some new asset to their characters for a less of a price.
Let's hope this blunder does not deter Bandai's future attempts to push this franchise to the western audience. All they need to do to make live service gundam game work is to polish their gameplay, make playable mobile suits more often and last but not least, do not let their greedy appetite gets the better of them.

I agree with a lot of points. Though on the topic of the Aerial and other suits getting in I feel like they really dropped the ball with the Roster a little bit.
We should've got the strike-freedom. Not the Hyperion, Aerial should've gotten in too. The Zaku II Melee (Dozle Zabi Custom) Should've been replaced with the Gouf Custom from the 08th MS team as a UC Melee suit.
Just a few idea's but a lot of missed opportunities....which is Evo's entire life basically.

i still think launching the game on consoles months after pc hurt the game in a way it could never recover from. While all the streamers were hyping this game up for pc as a console player i could not play and my hype was more or less gone by the time the console launched happened.
Also their balancing made it so new players quit the game immediately. Ive heard barbie was less of an issue on pc but on console he literally killed the game. Almost every game boiled down to who had the better barbie.

Really sad to see Bandai doing the same exact thing they always do here with mecha. Armored Core is generally the same with them for launch advertising and game maintenance and its really kinda shocking how they can keep failing in the same exact way for decades. Funny that they closed it just when I was planning to start, but I suppose that's for the better. I guess we'll just have to see if they change anything in the future, because if not even FROMSOFT can get them to change, then they need to start thinking about a corporate purge on the upper levels.
Also surprise Giraffe Blues out of nowhere! Us Macross fans are still waiting for another console title - the last one was on PS3 at this point, come on Kawamori!

yep, love the game but damn it all it had a ton of issues, that ya'll pointed out in this.
i doubt they'd do it but if bamco does make a gundam evo 2 for whatever reason, i hope they also add a single player and co-op focused modes, obviously fix up the matchmaking and have all the previous game's units AND have capital points be rewarded to you at the end of a match, more maps, more future units more game modes and more media from other gundam series, returning VA's they could call legacy pilots or something, remixed music, and so on, pretty sure there's more i could add, but at that point that's just wishful thinking.
and ya know, even if i couldn't play season 1 because i'm a console player and i had to wait, even after all the frustration i had with fighting certain units and the matchmaking being pretty bad, i still had a blast of a time playing this game, from being the hope of the team as unicorn, piloting the heavy weapons guy's personal mecha, blocking damage and returning the pain with the sazabi's shotgun and to even just letting the guntank do it's thing, even if i didn't play or enjoy playing some units all of the units felt unique and in a way fun to play! i just wish i could've had more time with some suits over others.
in any case, i'm gonna miss this game when it's finally gone, who knows, maybe bamco could make a g-evo 2 or maybe they won't fully shut down gundam evo, but again, wishful thinking.

Wasn't the best MMO out there by far but I liked the heavy grounded combat and the visuals. And in South East Asia we barely have any choices for good MMORPGs (We are not even allowed to play BP on any regions at all, not just JP). But apparently from what I hear BP has been qutie monetisation heavy just like Gundam Evo, worse in some cases as the battlepass there doesn't even refund you your premium currency like it does for Gundam Evo.

They believed players would spend money to buy the latest MS. If you think Gundam Evolution lock MS is expensive, Gundam Online is gacha game, I seen unlucky jp youtuber spend more then 40,000 yen to unlock a suit. Occasionally publisher will give away some MS plan for free.

I find it weird that Bamco keeps trying to push the pale rider even though, from what I can glean, it only appeared in a PS2 game that no one played and probably didn't come out in the west. I also have far from exhaustive knowledge on the subject but it seems like barely anyone in the west, even among gundam fans, cares about gundam build fighters and I get the idea that 00 was one of the more quickly forgotten series. If they understood western gundam fans, the pale rider would have been the Ez8 and they would have included the Gouf custom. There of course would be an achievement for killing an RX-78-2 with it called "No Zaku". This matters for monetization because even if you do get the means to catch up, they'll probably just add another suit you don't care about.

the game itself was great but the issues that were mentioned were what turned away so many people and Bandai barely did anything except maybe the ranked system it's a shame because I honestly enjoyed playing it and I met a bunch of awesome people playing it. if the devs actually listened to the players about the issues and did something or at least meet us halfway this game could have done so much better than it did

Start collecting server packets, people! Let's get a private server going for this game after it goes under!
But one thing to note about the beginning of the video:
Gundam Breaker Mobile shutting down was a *_GOOD THING._*
That game is the 2nd Worst Gundam Game ever made; A complete and utter abomination, and a mockery of *_everything_* that Gundam Breaker once stood for.
Thank God that game is gone now. Just stick to Gundam Breaker 2 and 3 instead. (3 Especially)

The truth of Evolution is that it was a bad idea from the start. Its a hero shooter that didnt need to happen. Bandai wanted to get into the American market and though that a hero shooter was the best idea to do that. They were wrong. When me and many western fans see the many Gundam games that Japan has, we want to play THOSE games. Right now I'm absolutely loving GBO2 (other than the constant connection issues.) Most never asked for a hero shooter, why? Cause there are already better ones out there. Evolution had a uphill fight from the start. Bandai looked at the most played genre in the American market right now and foolishly decided to paint it with a Gundam flare. Thats not what most are looking for in their Gundam games. This is why Evolution failed.

I really enjoyed the game the last few months in spite of the various things they did wrong. I didn't really mind the blue currency nonsense because I felt like the base units were more than competitive enough and I had 0 experience with gundam properties prior. Until this last month or so, the games balance was great. But the matchmaking prevented me from ever playing the game for more than a week at a time. I had many games where me and my duo had to 2v6 on the point for well over a minute because my team was just afk spamming at corners not even looking at their screens. There were more games where the matchmaking felt awful than when it felt passable. I STILL try to get people to quit overwatch and try gundam evolution and they don't even think its a real game because they never heard of it.
The only way I can see this having a brightside is if they double down on fixing gbo2s problems on pc and making it the de facto "gundam shooter" because the gameplay for that is great when it works. I am going to miss gundam evolution.

The monetization scheme sucks, but predatory? I feel like it was too weak to say that. I detest gashapons and season passes in principle but you really only had to spend 40 bucks on the game once (5-pack) and you were probably set, which is about the price of a normal videogame. You also get one free season pass if you grab it and get your coins back before buying the 40 dollar pack.

Bandai marketing lately has been well, REALLY REALLY REALLY FUCKING WEIRD.
tWfM is literally bandai's new Gundam SEED i.e. their new gold mine, the series popularity is off the chart(sure the ending is very underwhelming, but its popularity in japan is unreal), the gunpla sold like hot cakes(there is some exception), but somehow Bandai doesn't go with WfM ss2 nor they make a beautiful grunt design into plamo. on top of that, there is even less MG model kit released than 1/100 fullmechanic line in the last year.
they seemed to push 30 Minute Mission/Sister as their new main model kit line, but lately its been slowing down to a crawl
They developed and released GunEVO, but somehow not capitalize from the fact that OW2 has a less than favorable view in public eye.
i don't understand these japanese suits man

stun locks do not belong in fps games (COUGH barabos and the large green zeon one with the grapple hook COUGH), matchmaking can be terrible, despite the suits being multiple stories tall and weighing possibly 100s of tons they feel weightless evident by lack of foot prints and minor environment destruction (also no reduced gravity whilst on luna maps since you are on the luna surface), lack of game modes, no community servers, terrible xp (500 for first win of the days ok but only 50-100 if you win/lose and 50 for getting mvp is dumb), chat profanity filter is dumb as certain words will get partially censored even if it doesn't contain any curse words, lack of community events (as far as i know there was only 1 series of twitch drops and 1 comp event that they streamed and they had zentreya), map design lacking flank routes or verticality, snipers can at times be too strong, with how fast hp regens health packs and healing abilities are basically unneeded outside very intense group fire fights,

Always use the same unit and will getting bored then quit the game.
really dont know how the upper management (i believe is old man decided) decide the plan... actually can try to copy the good thing from existing market like Apex, Overwatch, Pubg

As popular as gundam is you think they would go all in seeing as this could be someones entry into the gundamverse. Dont even get me started on them anime rights smh. No turn A dub or victory dub? No double zeta dub?. Theyre too obsessed with amuro and uc timeline stuff.

I still have to hard disagree with saying the games advertisement was fine
I only got into thos game because I saw a feoend of mine playing it
All the friends who play it with us only heard of it ans started because we introduced them
For over a year all of my feeds have heavily involved gundam, games, etc
The only media that ever naturally appeared for me in these games were the new unit trailers
The only influx of new players this game was getting were people beinging there friends in
Not just people seeing game and thinking it was cool
And even if the earlier state of the game was wore, which it was, some players would still be able to wnjoy it for what it was/come back for it at a later date
This can't happen in the first place if it was never introduced
    -
Now one of the only gundam shooters we're stuck with is GBO2
Which has even more frusterating monetization and gameplay that requires a certain taste and mood, to say the least

Less player watch this video too, show how mainstream don't care the mobile suit. Maybe if Transformers would be 2x better, but still less than 1m view for gaming video. It would be best if transformers or armored core just develop base game and had chance to "port" it to Gundam. If would be better.
As for Gundam Battle Operation 2, if they haven include power ranger / ultraman as the pilot of gundam... the game might earn abit of audience ....ya Bandai use to had those license, or had chance to acquired them

I always felt that BN games tend to succeed in spite of the rights holders but that miracle can't always repeat itself. I dropped the game in the first season for 2 reasons.
Felt like amount of games you had to play to progress was way out of wack with the time I actually have to play.
Matchmaking was an exercise in frustration. Again limited time to play and matches never populating or backfilling made me elect to not waste what limited gaming time I have.
