As much as I love Mutton Chop, he's made a ton of videos on this subject and I never really "got it" until I watched your little 8 minute clip. You nailed it. So, thanks a lot.
He didn’t nailed anything. Just like MC The breath method is created for the ones that inhale back in the day. You breath through your nose and from time to time breathe through the pipe in the same time. And exhale through your nose and push the smoke through your pipe in the same time Where the air goes the smoke goes. Breathe method
You sir are my hero. I have never smoked anything in my life. No cigarette, no cigar, no pipe, no weed, no hookah, no anything. Not even chewed tobacco or dipped snuff. I love the smell of pipe tobacco and I am 60 years old. I have decided to try my hand in pipe smoking. I was worried about the possibilities of inhaling anything into my lungs and you have just sold me on this method. God bless you and thank you.
Even if you inhale a small amounts, it's MUCH less harmful than, say, living in a city with a bunch of cars spewing exhaust everywhere. But it's pretty easy to minimize, and there are MANY things FAR more harmful than a little pipe tobacco smoke, which we must remember is NOT the same as cigarettes. People don't realize how detrimental carbohydrates, for example, are to our health. It's known that sugar is addictive, inflammatory and quite unhealthy, it contributes to and exacerbates myriad health problems, and carbohydrates are literally just chains of sugar 🤔 I hope you're able to thoroughly enjoy smoking a pipe, it's a wonderful hobby and great for relaxation ✌️☺️✌️
I'm in the same boat as you, though 15 years younger. I actually had bought a pipe nine years ago that I intended to save up for my 50th, but I started to worry about all the legal restrictions surrounding tobacco, and "what if it's banned altogether by the time I'm 50?" So, no time like the present. I have smoked a grand total of six bowls so far - started last week. My taste buds aren't used to discerning flavour from smoke, however, which means that so far it all just tastes like... smoke. I've tried two different blends: one straight virginia and one aromatic blend, and while I can totally smell the difference, they both still taste the same to me. I figure the taste will reveal itself in time. But while I get no actual enjoyment from the smoke itself, I do enjoy the whole ritual of pipe smoking, from start to finish, to cleaning. I am definitely enjoying my new hobby, and am hopeful that I'll enjoy the different blends eventually too.
Awesome! Yes as I was learning I was definitely getting a lot of tongue bite because I was making everything way too hot, I'm glad you're enjoying it now!
Super helpful!! As many have said, I love Mutton Chop, but he's never explicitly said "your mouth is closed off from your throat". It's implied, and I assumed...but never explicitly stated. The diagram was clutch!
I tried pipe smoking several years ago. Then stopped cause I never felt things the way I wanted to enjoy them. Then, as some friends of mine at my new job are pipe smokers , I wanted to give it a new try. And I discovered the Muttnchop's videos. It really got me back in the saddle . But it was a bit difficult for me to really figure out the secret of the breathe method. Thanks to you and your little drawings and explanations , it's even more clear now. So thanks a lot and happy smoking.
I’m embarrassed to say I’ve only recently tried this method and I’ve been smoking pretty regularly for about a year lol. Completely eliminates tongue bite and the bowl keeps lit!! I had to relight on my last smoke maybe twice, once halfway and once when I put it down to let the dogs in lol. Other then that, it smoked all the way through beautifully. ZERO tongue bite and the pipe did not get hot. I am overjoyed lol.
Nice video sir. Great to see young men taking up smoking pipes. I'm also embarrassed to admit the breathe method is new to me. I'm 67 and have smoked an eclectic style of pipes and blends for fifty some years. Everything from actual 1830s Fur Trade clay pipes to French Ropps from the 1920s. Part of their charm is the cherry bark left on the bowl. I've become a solid cob smoker ! I am a Missouri Meercham customer and will treat myself to an occasional semi custom cob from their custom shop. If I may make two suggestion. Go to a hardware store and buy a pkg of heat shrink tubing. Only a couple of bucks. Snip off a rough measured half inch and shrink it on the tip of every pipe you own. Those pipe bits they sell suck. I don't want to chew on a chunk of rubber like a wad of chewing gum. I mostly smoke while I drive or go "lunting" with my dog and my pipe is usually stuck in my face. Encourages pleasant room notes can linger in our beards. About a year ago I had an attractive woman tell me shyly that my beard smelled wonderful. Lastly, young sir. Please tamp that ash down a bit more. Escaping embers are not cool and attending one's pipe is part of the ritual. I use the tip of my forefinger. It will develop a small callous if you're lucky. I enjoyed your video and will sign off and go subscribe. Peace brothers.
I can't stop watching the Mettnchop videos. His videos are addictive. I didn't totally understand the breathing technique until I watched your explanation. I thought that's how it worked, but I wasn't sure. Muttnchop also says pipe smokers look better when they have a beard. I have to say I have beard envy watching your video.
I liked the way you explained it better, the mouthwash analogy lost me on other videos. It helps me to kind of focus on my tongue closing my throat and not think about breathing through my nose too much. Also a reformed lifelong cigarette smoker, I've only had a few cigs in the past 3 months (and I didn't really like them) thanks to pipes, and I've smoked 20+ daily for 20 years. The hardest part is pushing the smoke back out through the pipe, but I see how that would really help keep the bowl going
Awesome! Thanks brother. I have noticed with mine I do get a little more moisture build up in the bottom of the bowl and it has a low intake so I can only smoke it for a couple bowls each time but I love it!
@bigliss9040 I still enjoy a cigar every now and again, but the pipe is just bliss. Seems like the tobacco is much more mellow and perhaps doesn't burn as hot....I can retrohale a cigar only so many time before it irritates my nose....but a pipe I can retrohale all day long....no worries.
nice video, the diagram helped a lot thanks! I started pipe smoking just this year. My first tobacco was Amphora Full Aroma and I was disappointed. No flavor and no "Aroma", reviewers on YT says the same thing. I bought a new pack last night called Tobacco Galleria Rum & Maple, and it's very nice! My pipe smoking hobby continues 😎
Muttonchop is somebody to listen close too about pipe smoking. He knows what he is talking about but I've been doing this for 30 years. Never drag tobacco. Breath half nose half lung and exhale.
I have been smoking and enjoying cigars for a few years now and got into the pipe for an expansion on that experience and found it allows me to enjoy and interact with the tobacco in a much different way. Both are extremely satisfying, relaxing, and contemplative and allow me to goninto a deeply meditative state and concentrate on what's inside. Anyway, the breath method hasnt clicked with me yet. Im trying to figure it out. I just haven't yet.
I tend to salivate too much with the pipe stem in my mouth, so I hold it and take little sips. I alternate between a little retrohale and a little French inhale to taste the smoke. It works well this way but precludes me from doing much of anything else while piping. I don’t mind because I focus on the pipe, my thoughts, the blend, etc..
i do this every time i smoke but i am concerned. Is there a chance to inhale the smoke without even noticing? My smokes are always enjoyable, no tounge bite, no hot smoke, it is amazing, but i don't know if i am inhaling or not. I have never smoked cigarettes and don't even know what it feels like to inhale. Any tips?
Well, like anything you're smoking, cigars, pipes, etc you'll always inhale some of the smoke via normal breathing of the ambient air, especially when indoors, but that shouldn't be major concern. You should just never inhale directly from the pipe into your lungs as that could cause damage!
@@d.e.m.p.s.e.y i get it. Thank you very much. I was concerned, because sometimes my chest feels weird after i smoke, but i guess i am "virgin" to these stuff :D
Nice, easy to understand video. I’m a newbie and was wondering what tobacco’s you would recommend. I know it’s subjective but I gotta start somewhere! Thanks
For a quick start and easy to find I'd recommend Captain Black Gold, its the mildest of the Captain Black blends. Eventually you'll graduate to much higher quality tobacco blends that are small batch, but Captain Black isn't a bad starter tobacco blend. Just watch out for tongue bite!
Not if you use the breath method because you pick and choose when you draw with a breath, I talked about that in the video that I'll draw every other breath and it's not a huge draw either, just a smoldering ember. Hope that helps!
Hello. when you smoke with your mouth closed for an entire session , the smoke is coming back through the pipe and I assume being exhaled through the nose as a retrohale ?
Hi there! I'm actually pushing the smoke back out through the pipe from my mouth so the smoke comes in through the pipe into my mouth never leaves my mouth then I push it back out through the pipe with my mouth closed that keeps the ember going really well and I never have to inhale anything. I know that sounds counterintuitive to push the smoke back through the pipe but it works really well for me. Hope this helps!

My problem is: i understood I have to breath in from my nose and breath out from my nose too, but when is that I have to breath out through the pipe i.e. from my mouth? And also, when is that I have to breath in from the pipe to draw the smoke inside the mouth? I’m confused… any (further) help is appreciated! Thank you!
You want to breath in through your nose as you create suction in your mouth (with the back of your throat closed so you don't inhale the smoke directly) then when you breath out through your nose, you push the smoke back out of the pipe by moving your tongue and mouth together to push the smoke out, it is subtle and creates a nice cool smoke. Hope this helps!
@@d.e.m.p.s.e.y Mate, thanks a lot for caring about my question and taking the time for answering.
