-Our Intro Song "Feel the Love" From Alex's band
open.spotify.c...
This was Robert Lamm singing not Terry Kath, my bad, hope you enjoyed this video! What should we hit next from Chicago!?
If you want to hear Terry Kath's soulful, gritty vocals, go with "Make Me Smile."
Yup .. Y'all know ur gonna get about 100 telling y'all that .. oopsie🤭
Make Me Smile, Beginnings, or Questions 67 & 68
Make Me Smile, (I’ve Been) Searchin’ So Long, Feelin’ Stronger Every Day
Robert Lamm really was their go-to singer as he was the one who wrote most of their hits.
I've never heard that opening piano part before. On the radio they would leave that off
I've been listen to this since forever and have never heard that piano intro. I've listened to the albums and never even thought that intro was part of "Does Anybody Even Know What Time It Is".
Don't remember hearing that piano intro either, we really don't know full well what we have missed only hearing songs on top 40 radio.
@@katec4369 I remember listening to this song at least a thousand times and never heard that intro before. I actually was thinking they had the wrong song on lol.
@@katec4369 They trimmed that bit off on the "Greatest Hits" collections, too. So you really only get to hear it if you're actually listening to the original "Chicago Transit Authority' album, like this.
Yep, hope they read your comment. Agree with all of the above. That very first part was never played.
"Make Me Smile" and "Beginnings" are arguably Chicago's 2nd and 3rd best songs behind "25 or 6 to 4." Both of these songs need to be reacted to have even a rudimentary core appreciation for early Chicago. Plus these three top songs each showcase a different singer. (Impressive to have three vocalists with such immaculate tones in one band.) Then you need to hit some of the harder blues and jazzy stuff, like "South California Purples" and "Poem 58."
I would include Question 67 & 68.
Yes, South California Purples!!!
I would agree if you are excluding I'm A Man, for whatever reason, but that 1 is awesome too.
@@StevesFunhouse I would NEVER exclude I’m A Man, it’s one of my favorites.
@@trespatines8698 Mine too 😊😉🙌👏👍😎
"Beginnings" could be your next Chicago song, or it could be "Make Me Smile", "Questions 67 and 68", or "Feelin' Stronger Every Day". I'd say all 4 songs are about equally good.
Those three up there are great cuts! Need to listen.
Questions 67 and 68 has some great back and forth between Lamm and Cetera. LOVE that song.
Feeling Stronger Every Day is such a badass song. One of my favorites of all-time by everyone not just Chicago
Agreed but Add “ Serching so long”
Beginnings is the way to go. But...not the studio cut, live at Tanglewood. Then you'll get the concert feel.
The look of utter confusion when the song first started was priceless.
I had the same look. I heard this song a million times and never heard that beginning.
@@gmaqwert I agree. I don't ever remember that intro
I'm a 70 year old Navy Veteran from Chicago and. this debut album was when they were called Chicago Transit Authority in 1969. - I listened to this album on vinyl endlessly while at sea and to me every song golden. Despite the skips and scratches I became a lifelong follower of Chicago and to me they are the absolute best rock and roll horn band ever!
1951 models was a good year Stephen, I’m a 57 model myself, Chicago was big when I was in high school, really big
I turn 65 tomorrow - born in 56 - and yeah, these guys were huge back in the 60s. I had all their albums. What memories this song stirs!
I heard that the Chicago Transit Authority made them change their name; for some reason it did very soon after this.
"Beginnings" and "Feelin' Stronger Everyday" are not just 2 all time great Chicago songs, they stand tall in comparison to any rock band.
Mega
My two favorites.👍👍
That first part sounded like a Victor Borge comedy routine where he plays a whole classical music piece, with his fingers one note off. Anyone remember Victor?
Remember him? I've been to 5 concerts in my entire life (excluding classical ones), and 3 of those were Victor Borge! I've got VHS tapes, CDs, DVDs of him. He was simply "twoderful"!
Yes I do. Funniest pianist ever. He could play music upside down literally. I once saw him running down 5th Avenue in Manhattan, his wife ran after him yelling "Victah!"
If you watched Ed Sullivan back in the day you saw the great Victor Borge! I’m that old and yes it was great
Love his routines. Remember him fondly.
He was Soo funny, very unique!! 😁👍
Feelin' stronger every day is a Banger, great song and great drums!!!
The lead vocal is not Terry Kath -- it is Robert Lamm, the keyboard player, who was one of their main songwriters. He sang this and Beginnings as well as Poem 58 off this album.
Plus shared lead on Someday.
Make Me Smile still needs to be on the short list - and that one actually does have Terry Kath singing.
Can't believe "Make me Smile" hasn't been hit yet. It's an early Chicago song, and it's a Banger just like the Boys like em.
And that's another one that is incredible in the Tanglewood live performance, though as I recall the recording has a small gap somewhere in the middle.
The long version
I hope you hit the other two in the poll. But, nifty thing here for you guys to know, you got me to listen through early Chicago albums. I had forgotten, totally forgotten how "prog rock" they are, how diverse, how SKILLED. Chicago V is amazing. The thing is, I was young, 6 years old or so, when they came out. My dad had them on reel to reel. I must have really paid attention because I remember everything...bass lines, what the drum fills sound like, etc. It has been such a gift for ME to rediscover this. My dad is now 86, and confused. He knows he is happy to see me, but sometimes not sure who I am. To hear these early Chicago songs and remember him, it has been such a gift. So, thank you for your channel. And eventually listen to the other two, or one of the first 5 albums in its entirety. They are really wonderful.
Beautiful comment. Glad you had a Dad who played you Chicago. Now you can return the favor and play it for him. Some people who are becoming memory-challenged really respond well to music - it triggers the same part of the brain where memories are stored. They have used music as therapy and it’s helped people re-engage. Anyway, thanks for sharing. This is music reaction at its best when it can offer these gifts. Thanks ✨🤪
Oh, and the documentary about music therapy is called “Alive Inside” - you can search RUclips for the trailer or even the whole film. 🥰
They were one of the original prog rock bands along with Genesis, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, King Crimson, Yes, Moody Blues….
Play it for your dad now.
MOBA, sorry to hear about your dad being confused. My family went thru something similar with my mother. I recommend you watch the documentary about glen Campbell and his battle with Alzheimer’s during the last few years of his life. The name of the documentary is, I’ll be me. Glen was one of the most talented performers this world has ever known.
@@Supercell725 My dad's favorite studio musician. I have his Glenn Campbell, Bobbie Gentry album.
"Beginnings" would be a great choice for the next Chicago song. (long version). The "B" side of the single was "Colour My World". In high school, whenever "Colour My World" was played, all the girls would run to the dance floor screaming out "Oh My God, I love this song!!" It's a slow song but they could never wait for someone to ask them to dance. They'd all just sing it out loud on the dance floor with each other! It would be great if you guys would play them back-to-back on the next reaction!
Hey I was one of those girls and that is a very accurate description of high school dances back then!
Colour My World was the B side because they both were in a suite of songs called "Ballet for a Girl in Buchannon," which has the better ending to Make Me Smile.
Apropos of Alex's comment, once I was in downtown St Paul in January. The temperature was about -15F and the wind was howling down between the buildings. I needed to catch a bus that ran once an hour and I had no idea whether I was in time or whether I needed to find shelter for like 55 minutes before I died. There was a Rasta dude standing at the bus stop and I asked him if he had the time. He looked at me for a long, long moment, then said, "Time be time, mon."
To this day I consider him the least helpful human being I have ever met.
Hilarious comment!
it was time for a hit off the bong, mon
Oh man, you got me with the ending there. Was expecting some epiphany. Nice. As a Twin Cities resident I can definitely see this happening.
“Feeling Stronger Every Day” is something you both would like.
This is a good song worthy of reaction, but you guys are still missing out on the epic guitar/horn/drum banger "Make Me Smile/Now More Than Ever" and its soulful Terry Kath vocals.
I thought they already listened to make me smile.
But to do that right, you'd have to do the "Suite" - -basically that whole side of the album..
@@Wordsmyth8 I double-checked before I posted... besides this one, "25 or 6 to 4", "I'm a Man" and "Saturday in the Park" are what they've done so far. There are lots of "Make Me Smile" reactions out there from others, but not A&A as best I can tell.
Feelin' Stronger Every day, I've Been Searching So long.
Agreed on both. Although "Searching" is poignant for me. That bitch! LOL.
This is a GREAT song, but Beginnings may be my all time favourite Chicago song. You totally need to hit that shit.
Beginnings is the BEST Chicago song, IMO.
Beginnings is my favorite song of all time, not just within the Chicago library! It has so much to offer!
Yes, please!
You have got to do Feelin' Stronger Every Day by Chicago. It has an apostrophe, 'nuff said.
Apostrophe?
That's Frank Zappa....😁✌
@@lisarainbow9703 lol. Jack Bruce’s fuzz bass slaps on that song!
"Questions 67 and 68" is the one song that showcases every instrument in the band.
And "Free" is incredible
Robert Lamm is the singer and also a top notch songwriter, “25 or 6 to 4” is his best known probably. He also wrote “Questions 67 and 68,” which should be your next song, along with “Beginnings.”
I got to meet him at PBS fundraiser in Chicago. They had him on set as we answered the phones, it was so cool! Also meet Peter from Peter, Paul, and Mary that way too.
Cetera wrote 25 or 6 to 4.
@@dougrhonable no he didn’t.
@@kmorri9 that’s really cool!
Introduction will show you what the band is capable of. A favorite of mine, after seeing Leonid and Friends cover it, is Street Player. Incredible energy. L&F were great in Ft Lauderdale Wednesday night.
Chicago always reminds me of my high school days, 1970-74. The only time I cared about time was the 3:30 bell in the afternoon, getting home, and listening to Chicago and other great albums of the time. "Saturday in the Park" was the junior/senior prom theme my junior year. Great song choice, great review.
Same here.
The answer to "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?" is, of course, "25 or 6 to 4"!
Nice
If you were around in 1969, AM radio hits were somewhat restricted timewise due to program directors and advertisers. The piano interlude was ALWAYS played on FM stations as they always played the album cut! Chicago had three lead singers: Guitarist Terry Kath, Bassist Peter Cetera and the writer and singer of this song...keyboard player Robert Lamm!
I obviously wasn't listening to the FM stations, or the right FM stations, because I've heard this song on the radio a thousand times but never with that piano solo at the start.
Only in your town!
I remember that as well when I was in high school. Loved FM.
In 1969 there were twice as many AM as there were FM stations. Many of us in the boonies had a local AM station that broadcasted during the daylight hours only. After dark in the central states if we wanted rock music we could hear WLS in Chicago during the winter months, KAAY /Little Rock in the summer.
I've heard the long version a few times on my FM station. I assume the free form piano and changing time signature in the opening horn section relates to the title, perhaps an inside joke.
I had completely forgotten about that piano prelude by the beautiful Mr. Lamm..... ♥♥♥
Feelin’ stronger every day, Great Chicago song.
The single version (the version AM radio would play) did not have the piano intro. This was the album cut.
Make Me Smile. Best Terry Kath vocal.
Speaking of "not radio hit"...you MUST do "Poem58". The Terry Kath shredding showcase you are guaranteed to love.
I was thinking of the same one. Poem 58 is a great selection!
I think it may have been Robert Lamm singing this. Terry’s voice is a fuzzy baritone. He does Make Me Smile and Color My World to name a couple.
Yes, that was Bobby Lamm on lead. Kath was on the lower harmony backing vocal and Cetera was on the upper, and most likely Lamm doing the middle harmony
"Ballet for a Girl in Buchannon" suite is the bomb is 7 tracks but intended as one piece. Great lyrics, great instrumental pieces, great grooves, plus some real nice jazz complexity.
Right, the entire "Ballet..." as one piece. That's the best way to hear "Make Me Smile" - the way they intended it to be listened to, and how they still play it in concert to this day.
Listen to this again and you will hear how the piano and instrumentals, in the beginning, sounds like the traffic sounds you would hear as you're walking down a busy city street!
The hit single version not only cuts out the free form piano, but the rest of the intro as well. It starts rather abruptly at the time signature change that begins the main body of the song that includes the trumpet solo.
You two will love "Make Me Smile." Take it to the bank, guaranteed.
heard this song a million times on the radio in the 70s and 80s...never heard that beginning...it always started where the horn section comes in.
Their first song on their first album, “Introduction”, is a must. As the title says, gives you an introduction to the band.
Great song! Better than most of their hits.
The live at Tanglewood performance of "Introduction" shows the band at its prime: ruclips.net/video/_oAoSZ2y1cw/видео.html
Had to cue the whole concert because it's the one with the better audio and mix. If it doesn't start at the beginning, just cue it back.
Exactly.
Yes! Yes!! So gooooood!
“Wishing You We’re Here” with The Beach Boys singing backing vocals.
“Make Me Smile” would have been a better choice.
no doubt about it
agree 100 percent
True. but that's OK! If Make Me Smile comes up, it ought to be the entire "Ballet for a Girl in Buchanan".
Yeah. Definitely. This is just too poppy.
Yup.
I'm 61, this song was a huge hit when I was a kid and have continued to hear it throughout my life, great song. I've never heard that intro.
25 or 6 to 4 is my favorite Chicago song.
When you write a multi platinum song, being analyzed 50 years later… you can put any intro you want.
No radio plays that intro
But SiriusXM does
The intro sets up the whole thing with suspense it’s compositional excellence. A lot of people on here clearly only listen to the radio
Make Me Smile is that banger you are looking for. Multiple sections, great horn arrangements, plus Terry Kath guitar and vocals.
Beginnings is a must listen to at some point
The beginning works live in concert. It gives people time to get a beer and sit down. When they hear that jazz they know its time to run to your seats!
GOOOOOOOD MORNING A&A FAMILY!
☮️❤️♾️
Yes! Beginnings has one of the best horn arrangements of any song written in the rock & roll era.
If you want to hear Terry Kath NOT sound like Michael Bublé, listen to "Make Me Smile". He kills on that track!
Or this song, where he doesn't sing lead.
Terry Kath died 45 years ago, when Michael Bubble was only three years old. Who sounds like whom?
Chicago had three great vocalist. They all had their songs. This was Robert Lamm
I think the answer to “does anyone really know what time it is?” Is obviously 25 or 6 to 4.
Obviously
On a Saturday
That answer reveals a lack of knowledge as to the exact time.
I think it was the 4th of July.
By the '80's, they tried looking ahead with "Love Me Tomorrow", which is a song and era by Chicago to largely avoid reviewing.
Robert Lamm sang this track - he also sang Saturday In The Park. Terry Kath sang Make Me Smile, Beginnings and ironically Wish You Were Here. Terry was a LEGEND! I love him
Chicago had THREE great singers. Terry Kath and Peter Cetera were great, but Robert Lamm was who really put Chicago on the map IMO. He is an underrated singer and an underrated keyboardist.
Terry Kath is my personal favorite of their vocalists, but I absolutely agree with you. Robert Lamm brought the jazz sound best to the band in terms of vocals. Peter Cetera was their pop/ballad guy while Terry Kath was their Rock/Soul guy. All very different singers, and that’s what’s so awesome about Chicago.
@@Nemesis7475 I cannot argue any of that.
I often wonder which rock bands have the most talent from top to bottom. Groups like Yes, Rush, Led Zeppelin, Radiohead, Cream, and The Who do not have any weak members. I would put the original lineup of Chicago on that list, too.
Without a doubt: Poem 58. Will rock your socks off and back on again.
Yeah - Beginnings is THE song that woke everyone up to Chicago. Great song dynamics, great studio effects, and showcasing their musicianship. Gotta do that one.
Yeah, and not the AM version but the lo-o-o-ong fade-out version.
I’ve listened to a butt load of Chicago, and played some in pep-band in high school, but never heard this intro. Thank you.
The beginning IS a separate thing on the album. “Introduction “ is 6:35 on the album. The whole album is great!! Love you guys!! Thanks for your appreciation of the music.
Never heard that beginning piano part before, and I've heard this song hundreds of times over the years. The radio never played that beginning. 🧐
Beginnings, I'm a Man, Searching for a long Time. Color My World- Terry Kaths voice is amazing on it, beautiful ballad.
So glad you guys have reviewed this. Brings back wonderful memories of listening to this played by local bands in the early ‘70’s.
Make Me Smile (long version). Terry Kath's brilliant voice & guitar on full display. Y'all need to do Chicago's first album, full album.
I agree "Beginnings" will hit all of your buttons. It has guitar, horns, everyone gets in the pool with their own parts.
"Make Me Smile" should be your next installment on the Chicago Trip....
Beginnings, Make Me Smile, Feeling Stronger Every day.
"Beginnings" is definitely one if their best songs. Can't wait for your reaction!
It's been 40 or 50 years since the last time I heard this song. It's a lot better than I remember.
If you wanna hear Terry Kath sing at his finest you need to hear “ Make me Smile “ He absolutely shreds On guitar, And has such grit and soul in his voice it’s amazing. This is not Terry Cath singing on this song it is the mid range vocalist I believe his last name is lamm
I was 17 when this was released. Music was the center of my soul at that time. More than fifty years later, the moment the brass kicks in I'm 17 again.
That is what I absolutely love about great music. It has a miraculous ability to transport me in time and space.
I was just a few years behind, about 13 I think.
I think the intro was a 12 Tone-Technique piece of this song! There's a top line above and then a chord stacking line beneath! We had to do a 12-Tone at Lancaster, Ohio High School in 1974.
This song, and Beginnings, were released on the radio as singles in late 1970 & June 1971 for Beginnings.
Watching you two engaging with the jazz intro to this made me wish you'd cover Dave Brubeck's "Take Five".
That would be awesome!!
Agreed! Listening to Brubeck, I can see some influences on Steely Dan.
I was rather surprised that you didn't remark on the background vocals during the choruses, where they're singing "I don't care about time", while the lead is asking the questions "Does anybody really know what time it is? Does anybody really care?"
Color My World was our wedding song. A last minute replacement for Beautiful by Gordon Lightfoot (which the DJ didn't have). Still married after 34 years, so it all worked out.
Such a shame the DJ didn't have Beautiful. The title describes the song perfectly. But Color My World is a darned good replacement.
Introduction is a great Chicago song. First song, first album. It introduces the band.
Its been forever since youve given JETHRO TULL a solo vid reaction. "BOUREE" is an instrumental that may change your thoughts who they are as a band. And "MY GOD" is a masterpiece even though ian anderson had only been playing flute for like 2 years by that point.
I agree ZenClover 84. I just listened to Bouree the other day and My God is one of my favorites. Let's hope that A&A take notice of your comment.
I’d love a Minstrel in the Gallery full album reaction, but I’d also like to have my teenage body back. Did I say that or just think it? ;)
My God!! Omg 😳✨🤪
Oh yes, Jethro Tull please. Velvet Green, No Lullaby, Acres Wild, Dunringhill, Minstrel in the gallery.......
Yes.
Beginnings and Poem 58 are two songs from this album that are absolutely amazing!
Ballet for a Girl in Buchannon is a 7-part part suite from their second album, includes two of their big hits Make Me Smile and Colour My World - all a very good listen and and Terry Kath is the lead singer on both songs
INTRODUCTION - The 1st song on Chicago Transit Authority is a jamming masterpiece!!
if you want chicago's pop songs, check out 'feelin' stronger every day', (i've been) searchin' so long, old days, wishing you were here, just you and me...all great top 40 pop songs.
Beginnings is a must do, best LOVE song ever written.
"Poem 58" and "South California Purples" are two for sures from this album. I believe they recorded this (double) album in about a week (plus some extra tunes), and sounds like mostly live band takes, with a few overdubs. Including the live Carnegie Hall release, four out of their first seven albums were double or more discs.
Beginnings should be your next listen. Absolutely one of their best songs.
I love this song so much💕, it is Chicago’s best one, I’m so glad you guys listened to it and liked it!😃
My brother and I had this album when we were young teens and enjoyed the shit out of this album. We just loved Chicago along with so many others from when we were younger. I just wish I could be transported back in time to when this first came out. It was just a great time to grow up. RIP big brother you are missed every day.
Been a long time since I listened to the CTA album, and I didn't even register the piano beginning as part of the song. Definitely "Beginnings" or "Questions 67 and 68" next. Great early bangers!
Lamm’s keyboards perfectly depict the hustle/bustle of the theme.
You HAVE to listen to Beginnings!!!! Make sure you do the studio version! Horns, percussion!!!! A masterpiece!
"Make Me Smile" is a great song! Love it!
I grew up listening to this, Robert Lamm's vocals are amazing. I was never a huge fan, but this band had some amazing music that beats mark periods in my life. I was a Bealtes kid when this came out, also anything Motown. Hearing this made me so happy, thanks guys.
I’ve heard this song probably a thousand times over the years and have never heard that intro. I actually appreciate hearing it and I’m happy that that jazzy bit exists in this world. I got to learn something today. Thanks. 😎
Does anybody really know what time it is? “Yes, it’s 25 or 6 to 4.”
As much as I love Chicago, which is a lot, their hits are the least interesting songs for reactions, at least to me. I hope you save space for “Introduction” off this album for your next deep cuts dive. It’s not epically long but has instrumental turns from trombone, trumpet and guitar, great bass and drum interplay, and winds thru funk, jazz, hard rock - and is sung by the late great Terry Kath.
I agree!
then you don't really know what time it is. could be either minute
In 1969, it WAS considered avant garde to put that piano piece ahead of the main song (regardless of a separate name, or not). Actually, I NEVER heard that piano piece before, and I grew up with this music, and one of my best friends owned this album. He must have skipped it when he played it for us...
I would say either "Begininngs" or "Make Me Smile" should be next. Both awesome. Funny story about "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?" , the first time I heard it on the car stereo, I was momentarily frightened by the singer coming in the right mix and saying "People Running Everywhere." I thought there was some dude in the back whispering in my ear!
Chicago is completely unique. Love those guys. Their shows are always amazing. Check out Robert Lamm's own music too. He's a fantastic songwriter.
"Sirius" and "Eye in the Sky" is a good example of a song into with its own title. Sirius became the theme song for the 90s Chicago Bulls and got a ton of exposure. Might not have happened without its own title. By the way, how about some more Alan Parsons Project? I would suggest "I Wouldn't Want to be Like You. "
Hey guys, I just wanted to say thank you for announcing the Crack The Sky poll for the next live stream. Really appreciate you guys! Thank You!
Perseverance really does pay off Lou! 🥳
Stoned guy: "Does anybody know what time it is?"
Everybody else in room: "Does anybody really care?"
Did anybody else ever experience this brilliant conversation?
And, once again, I am compelled to advocate for Dialogue Parts 1 & 2...a banger in the tradition of 25 or 6 to 4!
Just a fun, brassy pop song. Next should be "Beginnings," "Make Me Smile," and "Dialogue, Parts I and II" is pretty neat, although simpler. "Questions 67 and 68" is great, as well as "Call on Me" and "Old Days" from near the end of their initial brilliant run.
Yes it's Lamm on vocals. Kath sings Make me Smile and Color my World. Lamm sings Beginnings and Saturday in the Park.
This is one of those albums that needs to be listened to in its entirety. "Does anybody" is the second cut that flows from the very jazz-oriented first cut "Introduction" - so the piano noodling makes perfect sense - it then flow into the third cut "Beginnings" - back when folks were trying to tell a story with an album rather that just a mash of songs
I remember listening to this growing up and all the great memories that come flooding back. Thanks!
